Shakespeare and Macbeth

Shakespeare altered many things of Holinshed's 'History' of Macbeth. In the history, Macbeth had a genuine grievance against Duncan, since Duncan had blocked Macbeth's legal path to the throne. Shakespeare changes that Macbeth kills Duncan without any reasons he kills just for his ambition because Shakespeare needs to show that Macbeth's mind is changing by Lady Macbeth. At first, Macbeth respects Duncan, he says 'First, as I am his kinsman and his subject, strong both against the deed; then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door,'(Act I, Sc 7, Ln 1) but after conversation between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, he changes himself to very ambitiously. Lady Macbeth describes his husband as 'unmanliness' person to change his mind. She says 'When you durst do it, then you were a man; and, to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man.'(Act I, Sc 7, Ln 4) Also, if Macbeth had a good reason to kill Duncan, like history did, then the audiences will not think Macbeth is a tyrant or a betrayer, like we think Macduff should kill Macbeth. Shakespeare wants the audiences to feel anger toward Macbeth and sadness toward Duncan. Therefore, Macbeth did not have genuine grievance against Duncan.

In the history, there was only one witch. The witches are very important things in the Scottish play. They open the story at the first. We get some information of Macbeth and the background of Scotland by their conversation. But, if there were only one witch, it would be very hard to understand what is happening in Scotland. He says 'The castle of Macduff I will surprise; seize upon Fife; give to the edge of the sword his wife, his babes and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line.' (Act IV, Sc 1, Ln 151) If he kills them by himself, he may fell guilty, like he did when he killed Duncan. Now, he finds a way to kill people without feeling guilty by hiring murderers. Also, when he wants to kill Banquo, he may be afraid of him because he is a general and very good fighter, so he hires three murderers to kill him. Therefore, Shakespeare made murderers for Macbeth.
