A Mission for Mexico

What exactly is a Mission for Mexico? Well, there are many different types of missions for Mexico. However, I'd like to talk about two in particular. These missions, although they were identical, each one represents something different to me. These trips took place when I was seventeen and eighteen years old. Although there are many different missions that go to Mexico each year with different goals and aims in mind, the two I went on were known as Habitat Trips. The trips were tough, but in the end they both were worth it.

The first trip I went on was sponsored by The 1st Presbyterian Church of Selma, Alabama. The mission team was composed of fifteen adults and nine kids. It all started in early July when we boarded a church bus that was bound for The Birmingham International Airport. The trip from Selma to The Birmingham Airport took about two and a half hours, during which time our team was able to grow closer as a group.

Once we had arrived at the airport the adults in the group began the long and tedious process of checking in over one hundred bags of luggage and equipment all the while keeping an eye on us kids. After the luggage had been checked in and the tickets had been given out, all of us patiently waited on our flight that was going to take us to Houston, Texas. The flight to Houston International wasn't that bad; the entire trip only took three hours.

Shortly after we had reached the airport's loading tarmac our team was pilled into three full-sized Chevrolet vans, their job was to take us the rest of the way into Mexico. When we reached the Mexican border, our group was pulled aside and was made to wait, as Mexican and American Officials went through our entire luggage. It was a minor setback, and something we had expected from the beginning. After entering Mexico some of the members of our team, mostly the kids, were shocked by the utter poverty that was plainly visible once we had crossed the border. Most of the houses were made from either cardboard boxes tacked together or aluminum sheets nailed to plywood rafters. Anyone that has not seen these sites with their own eyes cannot begin to understand the true poverty of this country.

We made it to our hotel safely and we were to begin our mission bright and early the very next day. Our mission was to construct a small cinderblock house for a family that desperately needed somewhere safe to stay. During the next to weeks the temperature ranged from one hundred and five degrees all the way up to one hundred and fifteen degrees. The father of the family that would soon move into the house helped us build it. Everything went according to plan and our team was proud to present the house key to the family at the end of the second week.

I thought those two weeks in Mexico were real eye openers for me! However, I hadn't even taken into account the fact that I would be going back the following year, and that trip would be an experience I would never forget!

The following year, I was given the opportunity to go back to Mexico with another Habitat Team. This team was made up of almost all new people, some I had never met before, and some I knew well. We went back to the same general location as the first year. Our job this year was the same as the year before it, to construct another

cinderblock house. This year the foundation for the cinderblock house had already been put into place by the organization that had sponsored our team. The job now remained to stack the cinderblocks, put into place the iron rebar for holding the blocks together and to PVC both the outside and inside of the house. The house was being built at record speed, until our team ran into a problem. The roofing slats that were supposed to arrive on a Wednesday arrived two days later on Friday. This had the effect of making the group work over-time to complete the house by Saturday morning.

After all was said and done we handed the key to another grateful family and headed back to our hotel to pack and go home. As we were driving back through the neighborhood on our way to the hotel I saw the house I had built last year! We stopped the van and everyone got out. I was the only person there that had worked on the house the previous year. The man and his family came out to greet us. He even remembered my name! The first year was unique since I had never built a house before. However, the second year, and seeing that family living in the house that we had built for them changed my life forever! I will never forget the look on that family's face, when they saw me and exclaimed "PATRICK"! It was an experience and a feeling I will never forget. And after that final day in Mexico I realized that it had all been worth it!

Miss Emily Grieson was a small woman who mostly wore black clothes and had eyes that were as dark as coal, but was considered to some as a " tradition" or a "fallen monument". She lived in a house which is described as "an eyesore among eyesores" the inside was covered with dust from age and being unused.

Her father had had his taxes remitted because he did great deeds to the town and this was the town's way of paying him back. When the next generation came about the taxes were no longer going to be remitted, Miss Emily believed that she didn't have to pay them because of her father, who passed away (she was still living in the past). The new generation of officials went to her house to talk to her but the cold and dry voice of Miss Emily would not agree to pay the taxes. She told them to "see Colonel Sartoris", who had been deceased for over ten years, and he will tell them about the taxes.

Miss Emily's father has been dead for about years and in that time she hadn't come out of the house often and after her "sweetheart" left her she wasn't seen at all. There was a smell coming from her house that was the subject of some neighbors' complaints to the authorities.

The Board of Aldermen snuck into her house and sprinkled lime all over to try to get rid of the stench. On the way out they noticed Miss Emily's figure standing motionless in the window like an "idol". The smell went away after a couple weeks. After her father died, women from the neighborhood came to visit her and she would greet them at the door saying that her father wasn't dead. She kept saying this for about days, meanwhile doctors and ministers tried to convince her to get rid of her father's body. Before they had to use the law, she "broke down" and they were able to bury her father. The town didn't think of her as crazy because her father protected her from many young men and she wouldn't be able to protect herself from people.

Custom Essays on A rose for emily - Summary

Miss Emily became sick for a while, and when the town first saw her after some time she looked "sort of tragic and serene". A construction company came to town for the paving of sidewalks with the company came Homer Baron, a foreman, who became very popular in the town. He was caught being with Miss Emily on Sunday afternoons taking a drive around the town in a yellow-wheeled buggy. The people in the town were happy for her but they seemed kind of jealous of her. They said, "Of course a Grieson would not think that of a Northerner, a day laborer." They started saying "poor Emily" because they felt that it wasn't going to work out with Mr. Baron, and Miss Emily was going to be alone again. Miss Emily went to the drugstore and purchased some arsenic, not telling the druggist what it is going to be used for, which made the townspeople think that she was going to kill herself (mostly because arsenic is way too strong to kill rats). The ladies in the town started to become disgusted with Miss Emily and Homer Baron so they sent for Miss Emily's cousins, which would drive away Homer Baron. The cousins came to town and, of course, Homer Baron vanished. They left after about a week and some time afterwards Homer Baron was seen about the town again. They were not seen again for some time, when they were seen again they were gray as gray can be. The town would send her a tax notice every December that would return unpaid, from time to time Miss Emily could be seen only in the bottom windows as she had basically shut off the top floor.

She grew ill and eventually died in her house; no one in the town even knew she was sick. She died in a downstairs room, "in a heavy walnut bed with a curtain, her gray head propped on a pillow yellow and moldy with age and lack of sunlight." The cousins had the funeral in Miss Emily's house where the whole town cam to see her body underneath "a mass of bought flowers." They all knew of a room in the upstairs that hadn't been open for 40 years. They waited until they buried her then they forced it open. Inside it seemed like a tomb, with dust that went everywhere when the door was opened. The room was decked out as for a bride, with the color rose on the curtains and on lampshades. Also there was a "man's toilet things" that were a tarnished silver, among them was a collar and tie, which looked as if they were just taken off, and a suit hung on the chair with two shoes and discarded socks. A man was laying in the bed, looked as if it was just in the action of embracing someone. The remains from him were impossible to get off the bed, and the pillow next to him had the indentation of another head. One of the people took a long strand of hair from that pillow, which was very gray in color.

Satire is defined as a literary work in which irony, derision, or wit in any form is used to expose folly or wickedness. Whenever Johnathan Swift disagreed with an event taking place in England he would portray it through satire in his writings. In Gulliver's Travels, Swift attempts many times throughout his writings to use satire. Specifically, he used social satire, religious satire, and political satire. In Johnathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels satire is a predominant element used throughout his works.

Swift uses social satire numerous times all through the books. Even from the beginning, one can see satire. On Gulliver's first journey, he is taken to the land of the Yahoos. Yahoos appear to have some of the same characteristics as humans. When Gulliver follows a set of foot prints, he finds several of them playing in a field with trees. With big claws and thick hair covering their body, Gulliver thinks to himself that he has never seen such a repulsive creature (Gulliver's Travels Investigating Satire).

Swift uses the Houyhnhnms to portray the reason based society that was quickly spreading throughout Europe at the time. One of the most obvious aspects of true reason is their language. No doubt, lying, or deception is found among the things they say. Gulliver's master says that their language is to help them understand and receive information better, contradicting the evolution of the English language. People is Swift's environment were beginning to use language to lie and cheat. The Houyhnhnm language is a simple one that represents their wants and passions. What Swift was trying to show by this is that if the point of a common language is to communicate, there is not a reason for lying (Johae).

Although the Houyhnhnm society seems perfect, there are many things missing. They lack any emotion and have no sense of humor, love, passion, and creativity. It is impossible for humans to leave out opinions and emotions. The Houyhnhnms are what humans would be like if we were capable of true reasoning without emotions (Davis).

Swift satirized the society of England by proposing a tax system. The king of Brobdingnag would tax according to your outward appearance and popularity. The king stated that you should not be taxed for honor, justice, wisdom, and learning (Muir).

Swift used satire against the people of England and how they acted. After Gulliver had described the people of England to the queen, she comes to the conclusion that the people are "the most pernicious race of little odious that Nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the Earth" (satire in Gulliver's Travels).

When using religious satire, Swift often makes fun of how churches fight and argue over petty differences. The Yahoos would have these major wars just because of the way they break their eggs. Swift satirizes about how they made such a big deal over a little difference. He doesn't understand why the Protestants and the Catholics have wars over minor differences (Travels with a Satirist).

The popularity of the church in England was what Swift used to create the Yahoos. The creation of the Yahoos is similar to the creation of Adam and Eve. The beginning of the Yahoos is that two members of the civilization appeared on a mountain and multiplied very quickly (Gulliver's Travels- Dissention and Satire).

It can be inferred that since the Houyhnhnms live by reason they are Christians. At the end of the fourth book, there is another attack on Deist thought. When Gulliver returned home, he is disappointed to learn that the humans did not measure up to the Houyhnhnm standards of reason and virtue. The type of impact the Houyhnhnms had on Gulliver is like the disciplined and committed lifestyles of Christian beliefs (Thackery).

Years ago, in Lilliput, people broke their eggs on the big end. When the king's grandfather cut himself breaking an egg this way, his father (the present king at the time of the incident) made a law that everyone was to break their eggs on the smaller end. When some of the people resisted, they left and found refuge in Blefscu. "For six and thirty moons past", the two sides have been at war. Since Gulliver could not distinguish a difference between the two ends of the eggs, this argument seemed ridiculous. Swift made Lilliput similar to England and Blefscu similar to France. Swift satirizes the unnecessary arguing between the two countries (Rollyson).

Many times throughout his works, Swift would satirize a major event going on in his country. Whenever Swift did not agree with something he often satirized the event in his fictitious stories. In Gulliver's Travels, Swift satirized these major events with social, political, and religious happenings of his time.

The state of Connecticut is the riches state in the nation, but has three of the nation's poorest cities. In the 000 Census Hartford was designated the second poorest city in the nation. The city of Hartford also has some of the most racially segregated and poorest neighborhoods in the country. A proposal that is being considered is whether or not Hartford will be a city that requires scattered site low-income housing in surrounding suburbs. If scattered site housing is developed there would be more opportunities available for poor urban minorities.

To understand how neighborhoods became segregated we need to know how urban ghettos came to be. Immigration and industrialization are two of the main causes in the development of ghettos. World War One was the first migration of African-Americans to the North. They took low paying jobs in the factories. Wartime was good for the economy. There were higher demand for jobs in the Northeast and Mid-West. After the war in the 10's there was a reduction in immigration and there was lest labor. Half of the African-Americans who migrated to the North moved back to the South. African-Americans were hired again, but they were only used as strikebreakers. In the beginning of the 150's through the 160's decentralization of industries began. Since cites started to become crowded and moving material in and out was getting hard industries began to move different parts of plants into suburban areas. As jobs began to move so did the people. Realtors, bankers, and developers became rich off of the new suburbs.

Realtors relied on a practice called blockbusting. They made their money off of racially segregated neighborhoods. As minorities began to move into all white neighborhoods, whites would begin to move out. Realtors wanted to keep people moving. They also played on racial fears. Whites began to fear minorities. Banks began a practice called redlining. Banks had different levels of risk for giving out loans. White areas were low risk, but it was harder to get a loan in a racially mixed or all African-American area. It decreased the opportunity for minorities to get a loan. If whites owned property in a minority area it was extremely hard to sell. Minorities would try to buy the property, but since they were high risk they could not obtain a loan. The whites who owned the property did not to anything to keep up the property. When the property began to get damaged nothing was done to correct it. Banks tried to keep racial homogeneity. The housing loans were used to keep the same races in neighborhoods. People wanted to believe that segregated neighborhoods would develop stability.

There were organizations that tried to keep neighborhoods racially segregated. Organizations such as the Veterans Administration and the Federal Housing Administration allowed mortgage rules to become more liberal for whites. It also allowed working middle-class whites obtain welfare. This is how urban ghettos came to be.

Write your Conflict research paper

White supremacy plays a large role in racial segregation. Whites are of the dominant culture. They had no problems getting and keeping jobs. Obtaining loans to move to predominantly white neighborhoods was easier. The Matrix of Domination shows that whites are more privileged over minorities. Whites were able to obtain homes in well-kept areas. They had better jobs because they were considered skilled labor. Whites had more opportunity and resources. Most minorities did not live in the middle-class suburban areas. They did not receive the best jobs since they were only considered labor. Minorities did not have all the opportunities as white people.

Scattered housing is necessary for the city of Hartford. Smaller projects would be built and placed throughout the metro and suburban areas. These projects will help the poor minorities of the city. These projects would provide children with better places to live and give them more educational opportunities. Job opportunities would increase for minorities.

People in the surrounding metro and suburban areas may feel threatened by letting low-income families from poor areas to move into their neighborhoods. Others may have neighborhood resistance. Racial fears may come out. Mob violence might occur. People will begin to think that crime will rise in their area. It is hard to challenge social classes. Upper-middle and upper class do not want to give their wealth up. Concentrated wealth reproduces social class. When we create communities we create institutions through which social classes are reproduced meaning that the rich will stay rich and the poor will remain poor. If we try to challenge social class we can give a wide variety of opportunities and resources to low-income families who would probably never have the opportunities they would have in their poor neighborhoods.

There are some works of literature, fiction and non-fiction, drama and films that expose distressing truth to their readers. Sometimes the responses to these shocking truths aren't always positive ones. The American society is not accustomed to accept the realities that happen behind the doors of the companies that keep the country running. That is not the only reason though. It's not just that we don't like hearing negative truths about the country, but hearing it about ourselves as well.

One case in which these types of scenarios are present is in The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Sinclair took Chicago during the Industrial Revolution and exposed it for what it really was. He revealed the corruption that happened in the meat packing industry as well as other industries. He showed the way consumers back then were purchasing food that could not have been more impure. This was shown when he indicated how the cows infected with tuberculosis and other diseases were slaughtered without inspection and still given to the public as Grade A meat.

This exposing information was considered shocking because no one had ever had any idea that these industries were so dishonored and disgraceful. The environment was also very biologically hazardous in terms of chemicals, blood diseases and extreme weather conditions, either freezing cold or scorching hot weather.

Through Upton Sinclair's book was it possible for the public to be aware of these horrendous truths. Once these facts were out in the open for the public to devour, controversy and debate were born. This story launched a government investigation. Once everyone saw what had really happened and how badly the industrial workers were treated, especially those who were immigrants, it became the new topic of conversation. Everything from laws to history books changed.

Cheap Custom Essays on Analysis of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

In reality, no attempts were made to rectify these truths. These events had really happened and there was no other way to face it. No matter how much the public was disgusted as well as shocked by these truths they had to face them. This was part of history now and there was no going back. Finally the country saw how they had been consumed and obsessed by money and what it had caused them to do.

Another occasion in which a shocking revelation was indicated was in Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. The story centers on Christopher Johnson McCandless, a college graduate who decided to leave his wealthy life and hitchhike to Alaska in 11. Shocking information revealed in this book was the fact that Chris McCandless was able to survive for so long with just some essential necessities. This was considered shocking because it demonstrated how materialistic society was. With cell phones and palm pilots, which many people think they can't live without, Chris McCandless survived devoid of.

Chris McCandless, as well as Jon Krakauer, exposed this revelation through this book as well as through letters and events that Chris McCandless wrote about. The book showed how Chris found several jobs to earn some money. It talked about the people he met, what he would talk to them about and how he would act. For example, Chris refused to accept any kinds of gifts to make his trip easier. He wanted to accomplish this on his own, and he knew he could while others doubted it.

Once this book was published it got some very interesting feedback from its readers. Many of them thought that Chris was a fool for believing that he could have survived Alaska with the few things he had. Others agreed with his points of view and understood why he did what he did. All of these different points of views helped the topic and depth of Chris McCandless's journey flourish. These different letters sent from readers explaining their points of view were the attempts made to rectify the story.

Both of these books clearly show some very shocking information that I believe to be extremely significant. The book The Jungle showed the horrifying events that occurred in Chicago's meat packing industry. I consider this book to be significant because we can't expect to understand what happens now in the world if we don't know what happened before today, before all of our technology even existed. I also have reason to believe that Into the Wild is an important book because it shows one man's journey through the wilderness to find some meaning. To see that there was more to life than stock options and expensive cars. These kinds of revelations have much greater meaning than most people perceive them to have. All we need is to open the book and the possibilities are endless.

King Tutankhamen

King Tutankhamun lived over ,00 years ago during a period known as the New Kingdom. This period of time was called the New Kingdom because; it was when the pharaohs united upper and lower Egypt into one kingdom with the capital being Memphis near current day Cairo. The reason I chose to write a research paper on King Tut is because he is one of the most well known pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Tutankhamen is most well known only by the discovery of his intact tomb in 1 by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon. King Tut was born in 14 B.C. into the 18th Dynasty. Early in his life Tutankhamun meaning the Living Image of the Aten changed his name to the well-known Tutankhamun meaning Living Image of Amun. Tutankhamen began his education at the young age of four, learning first to read then to write. He was probably often found himself playing the ancient board game of Senet. The young pharaoh was involved in many sports such as swimming, fishing, and hunting. His passion was in hunting waterfowl, hare, gazelle, ibex, antelope, and ostrich. By the time of his death he had acquired forty-six bows the largest of which measured six feet in length.

King Tutankhamun became the pharaoh at the young age of nine years old. He ruled over a troubled country that was in chaos because previous dynasties had alienated their gods. The people loved and adored their young king. Since he was so young he had powerful and experienced advisers mainly Ay and Horemheb the commander-in-chief of the army. During King Tuts reign he and his powerful advisors propriatated the gods and restored the religion and traditional art styles of the early pharaohs as well as rebuild the temples of Amun. King Tut also moved the capitol to Memphis near modern-day Cairo. Being the king of the most large and powerful empire in the ancient world also came with some perks. The dressing of Tutankhamen was a ritual event carried out in front of expert courtiers. Some items that were found in his tomb were sandals, necklaces, jewels, kilts, and some undershirts with embroidery around the collar area. Such simple garments would take up to ,000 hours to hand craft by some estimates. The wearing of gloves by the Egyptians was very rare and reserved for the upper class. Tut had 7 pairs of gloves some of which bore stitching that wasnt reinvented until the 18th century. This amazed many modern glove makers that the Egyptians had such sophisticated stitching techniques.

The kings life though short had its fair amount of interaction with the ladies. Tutankhamen married Ankhesenamen, the third daughter of Akhenaten and Nefertiti. Ankhesenamen was about four years older than her husband and gained deep affection from the young pharaoh as she helped him transition from boyhood to kingship. When Tutankhamen died his grieving widow placed a wreath of cornflowers on his second coffin. The flowers only grew in the winter which signals that King Tut died in the pleasantly cool Egyptian winter. Some time around the ninth year of Tuts reign possibly 15 B.C. he died. There is evidence of an injury to his skull. One belief is that he led a raiding party into Nubia, which resulted in a fatal arrow wound by his left ear. Some other theories are that he had fallen of his horse-drawn chariot or that he was even murdered by his royal advisors. After the pharaohs death the commander-in-chief of the Egyptian army Horemheb assumed power by marrying Tutankhamuns mother. Then the 1th Dynasty rulers took over and labored hard to return Egypt to its former glory as a world power.

Over the centuries since the reign of the mighty Egyptian pharaohs grave robbers have decimated the tombs and pyramids of the Egyptian pharaohs robbing the priceless artifacts and jewels buried with the pharaohs as a testament of good will so that the pharaoh would look after them in the after life. Not much was known about these tombs and how they were arranged until the British expedition led by Carter and Carnarvon unearthed the untouched intact tomb of King Tutankhamen in 1. This discovery quickly made King Tutankhamen one of the most famous pharaohs in the history of Egypt. It also changed many of our beliefs as to the mummification process and how the tombs were arranged. Before the opening of the tomb novelist Mari Corelli gave a public warning that there would be dire consequences for anyone who entered the sealed tomb. Then just seven weeks after the official opening of the tomb Tutankhamuns Curse struck. On April 5th, 1 Lord Carnarvon died and all sorts of links were found such as all the lights in Cairo went out at the same time of his death and also back in England his dog was said to have howled and died at the same time as his owners death.

King Tutankhamen has always been and will always be the first pharaoh that I think about when I think about ancient Egypt. His tomb and its treasures symbolize Egypts greatness and multiple centuries of prosperity.

How Does language Reflect Social Differences?

Language is a series of symbols consisting of words, which have no physical similarity to that which they are symbolising, but have a meaning agreed upon between the sender and the receiver. The context within which a word is used often affects it's meaning, and the meaning of a word often depends on geographical factors. In the same way that we learn the vocabulary of the culture in which we grow up, we also learn the speech patterns and pronunciations of the people in the area of which we live.

We learn to speak the dialect of the place where we develop our language skills, and we can recognise this by people's accents. For example, people from London, Liverpool and Newcastle sound different from each other when they talk. There are also variations in vocabulary between regions used to describe different things. In the past, there used to be a lot more emphasis on accent, and those with certain regional accents were thought to be at a distinct disadvantage from others who were thought to have spoken English without a distinct accent. This was called 'received pronunciation' and those with regional accents were often thought to have been socially inferior. This is because 'RP' was often spoken by newsreaders whose voice signified authority compared to those with a cockney accent who are frequently ridiculed. There are certain words and phrases used in different parts of the country that are unique to that region, or have different connotations associated with them and if someone from one part of the country did not understand the dialect of a person from a different part, then there would be a communication breakdown between them.

There will often be communication breakdowns between people from a different social class or a different age due to the fact that their vocabulary range may often be different from that of another person. For example, a group of professionals such as surgeons will have their own use of specialist language compared to that of a group of youths who will have there own vocabulary range which will often include the use of slang. Slang is a variety of language used in certain contexts so that people can express their sense of belonging to a certain group. It is often the dialect of the younger generation and it is often judged as inferior to that of standard of English. For some, when the youth use slang they are often judged as sloppy and uneducated from those of perhaps a different generation, but at the same time judged by those of the same group as trendy and in touch with contemporary life. However, slang is not just used by those of the youth culture as many think, it is also used by those belonging to a certain group or profession. It is related to region, class and ethnic group. Slang says, "This is us. This is how we talk." The youth culture has their own slang and like most things associated with youth, the expressions do not normally stay around for very long compared to those who are in a certain profession such as lawyers. Lawyers are said to use the discourse of law and similarly, doctors have their own discourse or way of speaking.

Write my Essay on how does language reflect social differences? for me

Language is not only used to define the differences between age and social class, it can also reflect your gender. It has been argued that you learn your gender, and it is socially constructed. Although we are born male or female, we learn to behave in a male or female way due to social pressure, and some say that gender is created through cultural experiences and is different from the sex that we are. For example a wide generalisation is that women are a lot more talkative than men and are more likely to show emotions than men are. However, again there are always other factors to consider. If we look at age again, then teenage boys are a supposedly less talkative than those of the next generation and are more likely to grunt in response to questions to those who are older than them, or of the opposite sex. Women are said to be more in touch with their emotions and are much more likely to talk about problems with others, whereas men are more likely to bottle their feelings up.

Without language, it would be impossible to express our ideas and the range of feelings we could express would be much more limited. Language is a central part of our experiences as human beings. One of the complexities of language is that words can often have different meanings, and the meanings of words can often change over a period of time often brought on by social differences such as age, gender and class

In writing " Hard Times" Charles Dickens tries to be critical of characters like Mr Gradgrind and Mr Bounderby, by showing them as obsessed with facts and with little time for imagination. How does he do this?

Thomas Gradgrind is a man obsessed with facts. He is first introduced to the reader in chapter one, when he is in " a plain, bear monotonous vault of a school room." This seems to be a reflection of Gradgrind's character, which is also plain, bear and lacking imagination. Mr Gradgrind philosophy is " facts alone are wanted in life" which shows his fascination with facts and his outlook on education.

Gradgrind is a demanding, hard- hearted character with " a square wall of a forehead, which has eyebrows for its base." He is a dark and forbidding character and his looks seem to portray his ideas. They are both serious and solemn.

The way Mr Gradgrind calls " Girl number twenty" shows he doesn't see children as individuals but regards them as "vessels" to be filled with facts, evidence, information and reality. He thinks they should all look up to him, he is a model to them all in his eyes.

Order Custom how does gradgrind become dislikable in hard times? paper

In chapter two, Dickens describes Gradgrind as " a man of realities. A man of fact and calculations. A man who precedes upon the principal that two and two are four and nothing over." The way he says this sentence is a way of showing Mr Gradgrind's belief of self-importance. He is proud that he lives his life on facts. He believes he is superior of people who have imagination and creativity.

Mr Gradgrind seems appalled to ask, " do you ever see horses walking up walls in reality- in fact?" as he feels exceptionally strongly against imagination. Gradgrind's fixation with " facts. Facts, facts!" is continually shown in this chapter. He says it three times to really put emphasis on how powerfully Gradgrind feels about facts.

Gradgrind has given the reader the impression that Gradgrind has very little respect for children as he calls them "little pitchers." This thought is carried out further when Gradgrind mocks Sissy's name and insists she " call herself Cecilia." It goes on when Sissy is asked to define a horse, " girl number twenty unable to describe a horse!" He still calls sissy by a number even after he knows her name, this makes him seem even more intimidating.

In chapter three Gradgrind is walking home "in a state of considerable satisfaction." He is again pleased and proud of himself. As he is contented and self righteous about the way he has brought up his children " they were models everyone. They had been lectured, from their tender nest years; coursed, like little hairs." Gradgrind has brought up his children in a way that he thinks is perfect. He has forced imagination out of their lives and brought them up to believe its wrong to know about "twinkle, twinkle little star" or " the famous cow who swallowed Tom Thumb."

The Gradgrind's all lived in " a great square house, with heavy portico darkening the principal window, as his master's heavy brows overshadowed his eyes." Mr Gradgrind's house is square and un- imaginative just like him. Everything in his life is 'heavy' and so serious, nothing can be light and fun. Everything is " calculated, cast up, balanced. Six windows on this side of the door six on that side; a total of twelve in this wing, a total of twelve in the other wing" everything is planned chronologically correct.

Mr Gradgrind passed by "Slearys horse riding" on his way home. Even though he " took no heed of these trivialities of course, but passed on as a practical man ought to pass on" Mr Gradgrind obviously doesn't approve of it because it Is full of imagination, but he is even more disgraced when he sees "his own metallurgical Louisa, peeping with all her might through a hole in a deal board, and his own mathematical Thomas abasing himself on the ground to catch but a hoof of the graceful equestrian Tyrolean flower-act!" Mr Gradgrind is " dumb with amazement" he can't believe his eyes "although I have the fact before me I find it difficult to believe" after all he has taught them. He is embarrassed and outraged. Both Louisa and Thomas are thrown of balance. Mr Gradgrind seems to have all power over them and they can't stick up for themselves " Thomas did not look at him but gave himself up to be taken home like a machine." He wants to make them feel small and wrong and he does this by saying he is " sorry to hear it. I am very sorry indeed. It makes Thomas no better, and it makes you worse Louisa." But it doesn't work " no tear feel down her cheek."

There are other ways of dispute resolution rather than using litigation. Alternative Dispute Resolution, if possible, can be very advantageous by saving time and expensive legal fees. Binding Arbitration involves a neutral third party, or a panel of experts who hear a case, and based on their best judgment make a decision. These decisions are legally binding. The only circumstance where a arbitrator's award can be set aside is either if the award is contrary to public opinion, if the arbitrator exceeds his authority, or if the arbitrator acts in bad faith. In this case the company's policy is to use Binding Arbitration for dispute resolution. In light of this, the Mail Clerk, Tom, sued the company in court. As stated in the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) , "Arbitration agreements should be considered valid, unless other grounds exist at law or in equity to revoke the contract." Only in the case where an arbitration clause has been drafted and appears to be biased or one sided, will the entire agreement be deemed unconscionable. An example of a one sided arbitration clause is the Circuit City Case . The court refused to enforce the clause because it was described as being one sided and unfair " shock the conscience." Because there was no mention of our company having a one-sided company policy of arbitration, we continue with the assumption that this case should be fully arbitrable in court. For this reason we feel that the motion to compel arbitration will be granted.

b)

Defamation, "wrongfully hurting a persons good reputation" involves "published statements that tend to injure a person's reputation" These can be classified as libel, Slander, or Disparagement, the injuring of a business reputation

In order to prove that the company is responsible for libel, the plaintiff would have to prove that the defendant wrongfully hurt the plaintiffs' good reputation. The law says that people must refrain from making defamatory statements about others. To prove this true, the plaintiff must be able to prove that he suffered harms such as disgrace and or dishonor, which is sometimes very hard to prove. The only defenses for defamation are truth and privilege.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Dispute Resolution

In this case the defense for defamation is the truth. The content of this e-mail did hurt the reputation of Tom and his family, but the company had the privilege to investigate the theft. Because the theft did happen the company was not responsible for defamation. We see another example of this in the Randall's case. The plaintiff in this case felt that statements made by the employees were slanderous and might infer that she was dishonest. The plaintiff was in fact guilty of stealing a wreath and Randall's could not have gone about the investigation without communicating the facts regarding Johnson's actions, to each other. Because the defamatory statement turned out to be true, the company is not responsible for defamation.

To be responsible for the invasion of privacy the company must use someone's name, picture, or other likeness for commercial purposes without the consent of that person, intrude on individual's affairs, make information public in false light, and or disclose private information about an individual that might be objectionable. Because the desk is company property the company has a right to monitor it. The company did not violate the Invasion of privacy in any other form.

Intentional infliction of emotional distress, by definition, is "an intentional act that amounts to extreme and outrageous conduct resulting in severe emotional distress to another." This is the type of conduct "that exceeds the bounds of decency accepted by society and is therefore capable of serving as ground for lawsuit." In some states there must be a noticeable emotional change in order to recover, but in Texas, there must be a noticeable physical change. I am assuming that there was not any type of physical or emotional change.

These types of claims usually focus on the type of acts that fall under this tort. In our case Tom does not suffer a severe emotional change, but rather frustration and annoyance. "Indignity or annoyance alone is usually not sufficient to support a lawsuit based on intentional infliction of emotional distress." As described in the Randall's case, the defendants conduct has to be extreme and outrageous, the actions have to cause the plaintiff emotional distress, and the emotional distress suffered by the plaintiff has to be severe.

Using these as standards, severe emotional distress does not apply to our case, or to the Randall's case. The company acted responsibly and civilly with regards to this matter. The company emailed the memo to the CEO to make him aware which does not justify intentional or extreme and outrageous behavior.

It is really a shame to think that some lesser-known languages in the world are getting totally wiped out from the face of the earth and the governments of those countries are doing nothing to save them. There are various reasons for the decrease in popularity of these languages.

First of all, there are lots of countries in the world that have different languages spoken in different parts of the country. An example of such a country is India. A very small population speaks some of these languages, whereas many other languages are spoken by a considerable part of the country's population. Because of the dominance of these more popular languages, these lesser-known languages are at a risk of getting lost.

Secondly, most of these countries have only one official language in spite of the presence of many different popular languages. This is done in order to help people of different languages communicate with each other without having to learn all languages. Therefore the government concentrates more on popularizing the official language among masses. Some schools and education centers uses these official and more popular languages to communicate among the masses. As such the lesser-known languages are totally ignored.

Thirdly, people speaking these lesser-known languages may not have proper means to teach their language to others especially to their next generation. They may not have proper schools teaching their own languages. For example, in India, the state governments are trying to popularize the more prominent language in the state by making it compulsory for students to learn them in schools, but do not consider the lesser known languages.

Order College Papers on "Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct."

Finally, because of their unpopularity, people tend to get easily attracted to the more popular and easily spoken rich languages. They start speaking and learning more about the more popular languages and therefore change their mother tongue according to convenience. For example, in India, the state governments popularize their dominant language by broadcasting programs in these languages through television or radio. This attracts people more to these languages instead of their own.

The government has to come forward to prevent these languages from vanishing totally from the face of the earth. It should try to open proper schools teaching these languages thereby encouraging people speaking these languages to send their children to such schools. Also, famous literary works can be translated to these languages to attract people to read these books. To further increase the popularity of these languages, the government can attempt to broadcast programs in these languages through television and radio. It should also try to encourage these people to love and respect their languages and to come forward and help the government to popularize them.

Though it seems to be a very difficult task, the government should try its best to protect these languages from being completely lost.

In many short stories symbolism can play an immense part. For example in Kay Boyle's "Astronomer's Wife" one could find symbolism throughout the whole story. The difference between the husband and plumber is symbolized covertly at many different periods in the story. The figurative language used in "Astronomer's Wife," represents the depth of the main character's thirst to understand why her husband is acknowledged with such high regard but represents restraint, while a plumber is recognized with such low regard but is the perfect person to set her free.

"Astronomer's Wife" has three main characters Mr. Ames, Mrs. Ames, and the plumber. For some strange reason Mr. Ames is placed on a high pedestal, "Mr. Ames would never go down there alive. He likes going up," (5) is just one of the few examples that demonstrates how he likes to "be on top" of things, never below. Mr. Ames is perceived to be too good to succumb to any level beneath him. Truthfully, Mr. Ames is indigent, he is a grown man who should be handling the matters of his home, but instead he has his "youngish" wife deal with them. He would rather "…linger in bed, with the sun pouring yellow as wine all over the place."(5)

Mrs. Ames is use to having men look down on her but "when she looked down she saw that he [the plumber] was looking up into her face,…"(5) This symbolizes a new turn in her life; evidently her husband is always looking down upon her, but for once a man looked up at her. The plumber has no reason to look down upon her; he sees her as his equal. He and Mrs. Ames show each other her mutual respect and he gives each other the attention they deserve. Not only does he see her as his equal but she also sees him in the same way. Another symbol is their lifestyle, the plumber is nothing but a mere plumber and Mrs. Ames is nothing but a house wife. A plumber and a house wife are low occupations this allows them to start off at the same level. Mrs. Ames listens to him when he speaks; she understands what he is talking about. The narrator states "This was speech that touched her flesh and bone and made her wonder. When her husband spoke of height, having no sense of it, she could not picture it nor hear."(5) After listening to the plumber speak, "She sat down on the grasses, bewildered that it should be a man who had spoken to her so."(5)

For a woman to allow her husband to sleep all day and to speak softly around men, she must have a feeling of detestation for herself. It seems her husband has such high regards for himself, she has the same regard but for the plumber. "…he went down the trap. Mrs. Ames saw a bright little piece of his hair still shinning, like a star, long after the rest of him had gone."(5) Long after the plumber went down the trap she still pictured his hair like a star; a star that is from up above. Stars are found at the highest place and this symbolizes her personal view on him. She refers him to a star, sees him at a high place event though a plumber is looked down upon.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Symbolism in Astronomer's Wife

At one point the narrator states that "Life, life is an open sea, she sought to explain it in sorrow, and to survive women cling to the floating debris on the tide."(5) What does this mean? Symbolically, Mrs. Ames's life is an "open sea" and her husband is the "water" that is weighing her down, but luckily the plumber is the "debris" holding her afloat. As a young lady, she has been deprived of living her life; she possibly lives her life according to her husband's. The plumber is an awakening call for her; he allowed her to feel something she has never felt before and that is why she is so intrigued by him. The plumber is bringing her back to life; he is also showing her that not all men are like her husband. In the beginning of the story, we detect that she is young, probably younger than her husband. It is possible that her husband is the only man she has ever been with and that is why the plumber comes to her as such a shock.

Mrs. Ames more than likely never placed her husband on a high pedestal, but she probably is scared of him. She probably never realized that her husband is taking advantage of her. Just by having her handle the matters of the house shows this. Occupations are real important Mrs. Ames compared to the plumber demonstrates Mr. Ames being in a higher position in reality. Not to Mrs. Ames in her eyes that usual stereotype has been inversed. The plumber symbolizes the light brought into her life. She may not leave her husband but hopefully there will be a drastic change in their relationship.

During a lot of the nineteenth century China was constantly fighting with foreign countries over their land. Because of the advancements in technology the foreign army's weapons would take out entire imperial Chinese armies. The emperor of the Ch'ing Dynasty desperately wanted a way to get rid of the foreign powers from their land for good. The foreign powers were Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and Russia and they all claimed to have trading rights and even own some of the Chinese territory. The foreign countries had divided the land into spheres to separate themselves from each other. But, when the United States gained the Philippines from the Spanish American War it became another Asian power also. Since China was so close to the Philippines a lot of American business men were hoping to benefit from China's many resources.

During this time the United States Secretary of State John Hay came up with the idea of negotiating the situation of the land with the other powers in order to preserve equal industrial and commercial privileges in China. And so, he created the "Open Door" policy since the US people would most certainly not support any methods of force because of the Philippines war that had just passed. The "Open Door" policy basically guaranteed every power equal trading rights and would prevent any countries from discriminating against another in its territory. He distributed the idea to all of the Asian powers and asked them if they would support his idea. In reply all the Asian powers refused to commit without the consent of everybody and when John Hayes received the same response from everybody he declared formally that the "Open Door" Policy that would support the Chinese territorial and administrative integrity would not interfere with the free use of ports within their spheres of influence in China was now officially an international policy in 100.

This policy specifically was first advanced by the US in the "most favored nation clause" of the treaties finished with China after the Opium War. The "Open Door" policy of 18 did three specific things besides urging all the Asian powers involved in the spheres of influence in China to declare that all nations will have equal treatment of their commerce and navigation inside these spheres. The first was that a nation would not interfere with any treaty, port or interest of any other nation within its own sphere of influence. The second is that the Chinese tariff applied to all the merchandise that landed or was shipped to all the ports and the money would be collected by the Chinese government. And lastly, third, a nation cannot levy any harbor dues higher than what that nation levies on its own boats, and no higher charges on railroads either.

This policy was created by Secretary of State John Hayes to protect and guard the lives and property of American citizens everywhere in China and aiding to prevent turmoil and chaos in China. The US wanted to find a resolution that would create a safe and peaceful China, maintain Chinese territorial and administrative existence, and protect all the rights that the Asian powers were guaranteed by treaty and international laws, and uphold the principle of equal and impartial trade with all parts of the Chinese Empire.

While the negotiations were going on for the policy not many Chinese people were thinking of cooperating with the foreign powers. The Boxer Rebellion was formed to "expel all foreign devils" from China. This was a secret society formally called the Fists of Righteous Harmony. There were thousands of members that believed that they had magical power and that foreign artillery couldn't harm them. Because they practiced martial arts the foreigners called them the "Boxers". This society also believed that "spirit soldiers were going to rise up from the dead and join them in battle. These Boxers roamed the country attacking Christian missionaries and Chinese converts. The foreign diplomats tried to get the Emperor to stop the rebellion but she was secretly supporting it and did nothing to stop them. Finally after almost two months of attacking the Boxers were defeated when the US marines and soldiers and sailors from eight countries. They looted the towns and city's on their way to Beijing all while fighting off Boxers along the way. They ransacked the Forbidden City and destroyed the Ch'ing Dynasty. Since he US was a part of the victory in Beijing they participated in the settlement that came right afterward. Hay requested an expanded "Open Door" policy that would not just include the spheres of influence but all part of China, and that the powers should preserve China's territory and government. The other countries agreed with this and the "Open Door" policy permitted foreign access to China's market right up until World War II.

Everyone brings individual qualities into situations that they are involved in. Some of our qualities are valuable to the situation, while others are a hindrance. Our strengths and weaknesses benefit and hinder us through out our lives. Although, these are the qualities that we grew in to and they define us at any given moment, these traits are not permanent and definitely not irreversible. Changes to our habits, routines, and behavior can be made to improve our weaknesses and to enhance our strengths. As such, I consider myself a patient man. Patient, with a technical aptitude and a listening inclination gifted enough to guide me throughout my adult life. On the other hand, I am a procrastinator. I needlessly postpone and delay tasks until I absolutely must complete them. I don't do this all the time with every task, so there is hope for me to rid myself of this bad habit.

In the line of work that I am in, a technical talent is incredibly accommodating. Since a computer is a vital element of my job, let alone my career, being able to troubleshoot and repair problems that arise unexpectedly is important for both the corporate support technicians and myself. Another trait that is practical for my career is patience. Using the same example, problems that arise unexpectedly, patience can help anyone through the waiting process that takes place in a corporation when a computer needs to be repaired or replaced. Without patience a programmer can easily become frustrated and lose his train of thought, which would be devastating to any project. As these strengths are imperative to my career, they are also necessary, in my opinion, to an online-education practice. Being familiar with the technology behind the online courses, email, databases and the Internet, allows me to take advantage of all facets of the technologies for my educational expansion. While acknowledging my personal strengths, I must stress the importance of recognizing a personal weakness of mine.

Procrastination, by far my most exigent fault, has been an impediment in my educational progression. I acknowledge that I have been delaying my return to college for a long time. I have used excuses such as, family, time and money, all of which are legitimate obstacles but none are acceptable excuses. I could have made the time. Financial aid and grants could have assisted me with the monetary hindrances. I do not select where and when procrastination appears. I carelessly delay starting a project at work, knowing that I can complete the project in just a few hours, working stringently and diligently, stressing my mind and body. I have also been known to start a project at home and casually leave it uncompleted until days, months, or in some cases, years later. I believe that recognizing weaknesses along with having the desire to overcome them will enhance one's identity.

Discovering how to adapt to and overcome personal weaknesses is a life experience. In some instances, it takes a lifetime to claim personal victory in the combat of an obstacle. I am patiently fighting a war against my own faults. I am winning battles against procrastination by finding reasons to grow instead of letting excuses of comfort and ability reign. Upon returning to college, I have put a stop to my longest casually delayed life task. It took determination, embarrassing moments, career impediments and goal setting to start the decision making process of returning to school. Conquering procrastination is a behavioral challenge, a dare to myself to kick the habitual carelessness of delaying tasks regardless of pretext or ploy. Overcoming personal weaknesses is synonymous with personal growth.

Write my Essay on Personal Strengths and Weaknesses

Becoming a better person is the guiding factor to enhancing strengths and conquering faults and weaknesses. Ironically, one's personal strengths can most times be the force required to attempt to overcome one's personal weaknesses. But I believe that you have to be satisfied with your self. You have to be motivated, willing and able to start the process of defeating your weakness embattlements. As Deepak Chopra wrote in his new book Golf for Enlightenment The Seven Lessons for the Game of Life

We exist not to pursue happiness, which is fleeting, or outer accomplishment, which can always be bettered. We are here to nourish the self. The self is the source of your personal reality. All perceptions come back to the self. All emotions come back to the self. All ideas come back to the self. (Chopra, 00, p. )

You, alone, can empower yourself to becoming the best person, spouse, student, group member, leader, and individual you can be.

"Nike is the largest sports and Fitness Company in the world." Known mainly its wide variety of sports shoes. But, where does it come from? How did it come about? What's the history behind the swoosh symbol? Questions like such are probably never thought of when the name Nike is mentioned but they will be answered here in this text.

The name Nike comes from the ancient winged Greek goddess who was actually named Nike. Nike was the goddess of victory according to Greek mythology. It is said that Nike sat aside Zeus who was the ruler of the Olympic pantheon, which is the dome or temple of gods in Olympus. Nike was a mystical force that symbolized victory. Nike was considered to be the force responsible for a victory in a battle. A Greek would say, "When we go to battle and win, we say it is Nike."

Like most things big or small, there is a start to it all. The man behind Nike's success is Philip Knight. He was born in Portland, Oakland on February 8, 18. Phil was associated with sports most of his life. Phil was a track runner at the University of Oregon where he also received a BBA in Accounting in 15. While attending Oregon, Phil and his track coach Bill Bowerman teamed up. Bill Bowerman had a vision for lighter, more durable racing shoes for his runners at the University of Oregon and Phil wanted to make a living without giving up his love for sports. Seeing that Bill wanted better quality shoes for his runners, Phil looked at the situation as a marketing opportunity and developed a strategy. He developed this strategy while taking a semester on how to start a small business. Eventually Phil took a trip to Japan in 16 where he scheduled an interview with a Japanese running shoe manufacturer. Tiger (Onitsuka) was the company. Knight showed interest in the company and they were willing to work with him. Blue Ribbon Sports was the name used to represent Phil's company. With Blue Ribbon sports officially being a company Bill and Knight would place orders for the Tiger running shoes and Knight would sell them out of his truck to local track runner at track meets. Soon Onitsuka Tigers started to show up on the feet of Americans. With Bowerman still having the desire to make more durable and comfortable shoes for his runners, he would use Tigers and find ways he can improve the quality of them. The only thing that was in the way of Bill capitalizing on his goal for the best running shoe was the idea that he would be benefiting another company and not Blue Ribbon Sports.

"By 164, Knight sold $8,000 worth of Tigers and placed orders for more." By the time Blue Ribbon Sports made $1 million in sales and Phil decided to change the name of the company and sell its own brand of shoes. Upon changing the name Phil and Bill also hired two track stars to help get things moving in a swell direction. Jeff Johnson who was one of Phil's track rivals at the University of Oregon and Steve Prefontaine who too was a runner at the University of Oregon. "Johnson joined Knight and Bowerman's Blue Ribbon Sports company as its first full-time employee, selling shoes out of the back of his van at high school track meets in 165. In 166 Johnson opens the company's first retail outlet in Santa Monica, California. Located in a small building at 107 Pico Blvd. Jeff give his outlet the name Nike to credit Phil and Bowerman. On the other hand Prefontaine was the first major athlete to wear Nike's during competition and actually had a part in the design of some of the earlier types of shoes. " In 17, with some persuasion by Knight and Bowerman, NIKE shoes were worn by some of the runners at the Olympic Trials."

The SWOOSH. Nike's deadly weapon. It appears on just about everything associated with Nike. You spot it on shoes, shirts, basketballs, billboards, TV, you see it everywhere. But, what is it? The Nike Swoosh symbol that represents the wing of the Greek Goddess of victory, Nike. A young lady created the symbol by the name of Caroline Davidson in 171. "Caroline Davidson was a student at Portland State University in advertising. She ran into Phil while he was teaching an accounting class. Phil hired Caroline to do some for his new company Nike and wanted her to create a logo for the company that can be placed on the side of a shoe that symbolized movement. In 171 the Swoosh symbol was created and sold to Phil for $5.

"Some thirty years later Nike is the largest sports and Fitness Company in the world. And, in my opinion the most popular. Just about everyone owns something by Nike. Associated with Nike are also some of the world greatest athletes. First you have the greatest; Michael Jordan who probably made Nike what it is today as far as popularity. I mean, his products are the most sought after on the market. You also have other great athletes like Tiger Woods, Ken Griffey Jr., Scottie Pippen, Deon Sanders, Cheryl Swoops, and many more that helped make Nike what it is today. The best sports and fitness company in the world.

"The trouble with America is not that we are making too many mistakes, but that we are making too few."

-Philip H. Knight

September 11, 001. Another day to be remembered in infamy. Not since the attacks on Pearl Harbor has the nation been so devastated and ultimately so vengeful. Some think that the tragedy could have been prevented, and that President Bush knew about the planned attacks beforehand. I myself do not know about this, but I do know that the attacks did happen , and it changed the lives of Americans forever.

Before the attacks on America, airport security was very lax in comparison to what it has been heightened to nowadays. Speaking to my sources, I understand that you could get to the airport, drop off your luggage and board the plane in a relatively short period of time. That today, is pretty much impossible from what I've gathered. Metal detectors and guards everywhere you turn. While quite a large hassle, I think that these checkpoints are needed in order to greatly lessen the odds of another terrorist slipping through the cracks and causing another incident.

I'll never forget where I was when I first learned the basic details of the attack. I was eating my lunch in mod 4 when I heard that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. I really didn't understand the magnitude of the attacks until I got home however. After watching television about it for a while, I realized that these attacks will change the face of the USA forever.

Before the tragic events, I had a sense of security that let me think that never could ever happen to the United States. We were too powerful of a country and intimidated any would-be enemies so much that they would never attempt anything. My attitude towards the Middle East problems and other foreign countries was a feeling of indifference, because I didn't think that it applied to me or the United States. When the /11 incident occurred, that feeling of American invulnerability ceased to exist. Now terrorist attacks are not so impossible and you really do have to be vigilant.

Help with essay on September 11th

Directly after /11 I think the majority of the population was fearful and in disbelief. The disbelief quickly turned into calls for vengeance however. Blinded by patriotism, a large number of US people called for the bombing of Afghanistan, and I even heard some kids around school wanting to use nuclear weapons. I personally don't agree at all with that. An entire population should not be held accountable for the beliefs of a radical minority. I don't believe in the use of nuclear weapons and am glad that it was never really an option in this situation.

Patriotism ran more rampant than I could have ever imagined. Flags hung off of cars an houses. People were in red , white, and blue gear. Everyone seemed proud to be an American. This is where I think the tragedy almost helped our people. The country was brought closer together, and the unity was pretty nice to see. No longer were there African Americans, or Japanese Americans, but just Americans. Lately I've begin to notice things going back to "normal" which is disappointing, but I suppose it was expected. Speaking of Patriotism however, I would like to note that it is not all good. Patriotism , in my opinion, is truly faced , as even though it brings a country together and is a large part of the healing process; It also narrows the peoples' minds and makes them more ready to give up certain rights. I think you should never sacrifice rights for "safety" . Safety is certainly quite important, but if you take away right guaranteed to you, then I think that changes the entire makeup of the country you are trying to protect. The government should do all it can to protect the citizenry without infringing on liberties that are guaranteed to them. Terrorist groups still exist and will continue to exist because the fact is that some people are just insane. I think that employing federal people to work at airports and heightening security at them is a good idea, but wiring phones/spying on peoples' computers is just wrong and truly un-American.

In closing, although a horrible situation, I think that the tragedy has also brought out a lot of good in the American people. And along with some bad, but I think the good outweighs the bad. We will get through this War on Terror however; and hopefully it works better than the War on Drugs.

I would like to add a quote by Julius Caesar that really hit home with me.

"Beware of the leader who bangs of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind.

And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind is closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and do it gladly so. How do I know this? Well for this is what happened with me. And I am Caesar"

Julius Caesar {100-44 BC}
