The main character of my book is Elie (Eliezar). He is also the narrator. He is 15 years old and he was taken to a Nazi concentration camp. He is a very religious little boy. He is devoted to his father. Another character is Elie's father (Chlomo). His is a storeowner and a well-respected Jewish leader in Sighet before the deportation of the Jews. He is 50 years old. Moshe the Beadle is a poor humble man in the town of Sighet who becomes Elie's spiritual mentor and friend. Moche is well liked by all the townspeople. Dr. Mengele is a cold, unaffected Nazi officer. He decides who lives to work another day and who is sent to their deaths at the crematory. Tzipora is Elie's 7-year-old sister. She dies in the concentration camp.

Night begins in 141 when Elie is 1 years old. Elie is a religious boy. One day, Moshe the Beadle, a Jew from Sighet, comes back and warns the town of the dangers of the German army. No one listens to him and years pass by. However, by 1844, Germans are already in the town of Sighet and they set up ghettos for the Jews. The Jews are forced into crowed trains, each car consisting of 80 people. The conditions of the train ride are horrible. Everyone had to take turns to sit down. They are treated no better than animals. A woman named Madame Schachter starts to go mad. She yells, "Fire! I can see a fire!" throughout the train ride. At first, others tried to make her shut up, but it she did not, so they ignored her. When the train arrived at their destination, the air smelled like burning flesh. At Birkenau, their arrival, Elie is separated from his mother and sisters. Elie cannot believe that he is witnessing the things that he sees. He sees a ditch where babies have been burned. Somewhat afterward, everyone is moved to a new camp, Buna. At Buna, Elie goes through the process of the concentration camps. Both he and his father experience severe beatings at the hand of the kapos. In one instance, Elie receives 1 strokes of the whip. Elie and his father manage to survive through the selection process. Elie suffers from foot injury and he is placed in the hospital. The march leads to a train ride where Elie witnesses a boy kill his own father for some bread. Elie is horrified at the thought, and he begins to only worry about his own survival. Although Elie and his father are the only two who survives out of dozens, Elie's father falls ill, and soon dies. On April 11, 145, American tanks arrive at Buchenweld. As Elie recuperates in a hospital suffering from food poisoning, he looks into a mirror and sees a corpse of himself.

Elie was the main character, and he only had a strong relationship with one of the characters, which was his father.

Write my Essay on Cause Of Homelessness for me

The book's ending was okay. I do not think that I would change anything that happened in the story. The only that I would not done was not write that book. The book, in my opinion is degrading. In addition, I am not sure if there was a movie based on my book. It there were one, it would have had to be very graphic.

ClassifyLord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring is a fascinating book, the first book leading into the trilogy, Lord of the rings. Copies of this book can be found everywhere books are sold. The Author J.R.R. Tolkien has more imagination in one of his books than all the books I have read combined. He is an author who started out in the early 100's and has successfully kept peoples interest even now in the twenty first century. The reading level is primarily advanced and written in an older style than what most people are used too. The Fellowship of the Ring would interest anyone who would be willing to read the first few pages, but in a category, fantasy readers would love this book.

Being apart of a trilogy this book makes everything fit perfect. J.R.R. Tolkiens writing is the most interesting I have ever read. He puts his total mind into making everything fit together in a complex, yet interesting way. The Fellowship of the Ring clearly has his total imagination in this book as well as all of his other books.

Analyze

The theme is simple. Good versus evil but is still unlike any other book I know of, and has genuine ideas incorporated into the writing. It is not just a simple hero versus villain plot, it is a long complex array of events and people that make up each new day in the book unlike any other.

Gandalf the Grey is one of the most, if not the most, important characters in the book. He is a wizard of an age unknown and is the wisest among all men. He can be the most humble being at one moment, and be the fiercest sorcerer in the blink of an eye. He spends much of his time in thought, and is always two steps ahead of what everyone else is thinking. Gandalf is a friend to everyone that is fair, and is educated in middle-earths history as well as any other. He has the likeliness to be a rich and powerful man, yet remains to be a homeless wonderer that travels the country upon a horse, despite the dangers that are ever present in a world unknown. It is his personality to seek what is always right, and to make sure it is carried out until the very end.

The reading is difficult and complex, and written by an older author, but passes by any modern day author with ease. Once the book is read for sometime and all the places and names are learned, it becomes a lot easier. I caught myself looking back at the map, which is presented in the beginning of the book, to find out where things were. The illustrator of the map shows that he knows the story and has taken time to make the two come together precisely.

Evaluate

Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring is an awesome book and has turned out to be one of my favorites after reading it. The reason I like the book so much is because it is in a world totally different from the one we live in. It has all the fun and excitement of adventure on one page, than will turn to a life or death situation on the next. It kept me reading for hours upon hours, and with every bit of it interesting.

All professions have unique characteristics that distinguish them from other jobs and professions. Policing is no exception to this fact. Many experts of the police field have long sought to understand the unique nature of their experience and to determine how the challenges of police work shape the field and its employees. Even in the small town that I come from, the few police officers portray many different traits. The three most common styles of the police officers that I know are the "Supercop", the "By the book rookie", and the "Donut Cop".

The supercop is the type of cop that believes that murder, rape, and other major personal crimes should be his primary concern. He consider property crimes to be less significant, while such matters as misdemeanors, traffic control, and social service functions would be better handled by other cops. He also believes that the ability to investigate criminal behavior posing a serious threat to life and safety, combined with the power to arrest criminals, separates him from his fellow colleagues. They see diluting these functions with minor social service and non-enforcement duties as harmful to police efforts to create a secure society. The supercop has also been referred to as the 'Dirty Harry Cop," after the popular Clint Eastwood movie character that routinely violated all known standards of police work. In order to catch major criminals the officer will bend the rules and use protection of the public for justification in doing so. He will use any means to get the culprit, even if it involves such cheating as planting evidence on an obviously guilty person.

Unlike the supercop, the by the book rookie, does not distinguish between major and minor crimes. Although a law enforcer may prefer working on serious crimes, he sees the police role as one of enforcing all rules and laws. His duties are clearly set out in law, and the rookie does not shy away from this. They do not perceive themselves as lawmakers or as judge of whether existing laws are fair they simply perform their job to the exact requirements. This type of cop pulls you over and gives you a ticket for sixty in a fifty-five while also giving you a citation for having a blown tail light and having to many bugs stuck to your windshield.

Lastly, is the donut cop. He is the cop that you come by doing eighty in a fifty-five and he doesn't move an inch. Motorists will often be left alone if their driving does not endanger or annoy others and if he does pull anyone over warning are issued instead of tickets so that his off day is not spent in court. The donut cop ignores many infractions of the law and request for service, choosing to sit at the donut shop or shoot the shit at the local fire dept. The donut cop is more concerned with retirement benefits and crème filling than crime rates.

Do my essay on Classification of cops CHEAP !

In conclusion, many cops have unique characteristics that distinguish them from one another. Depending on which cop that you run into depends on if you get took to jail, a ticket, or issued a warning.

Worldcom was the number two United States long-distance telephone carrier, but inquiries into the companys accounting practices in 00 led to the resignations of its top executives and the filing of fraud charges by the SEC. The company has filed a plan of reorganization under bankruptcy protection. Worldcom filed for bankruptcy-court protection in July 00 after it had begun to disclose an accounting fraud that people close to the situation say has since ballooned to roughly $11 billion. The bankruptcy filing wiped out the value of stock that had been worth a total of $180 billion at its peak. In May, WorldCom agreed to settle the SECs civil fraud charges by paying $500 million to shareholders who lost money because of the accounting fraud. The additional funds were added to the settlement to address concerns raised by U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff in New York, who is overseeing the civil case.

Since the crash of the number two United States long-distance telephone carrier, WorldCom has agreed to include a deal that includes $50 million of common stock. This is to included on top of the $500 million fine. The supplemental relief, states the SEC, if approved would allow victims of the fraud to share in the potential upside of owning WorldCom common stock when it emerges from bankruptcy. This could be a huge upswing if stockholders believe that WorldCom will rebound from its mistakes. Bob Blakely believes that Todays settlement reflects an additional contribution of $50 million in common stock that will allow shareholders and bondholders to participate in the future success of the company. We believe in what Mr. Blakely says. We hope this can be a huge shot in the arm for WorldCom if all the investors agree and trust the company again. The revised settlement includes the $500 million cash payment in the original settlement and an added $50 million in shares of the company once it merges from bankruptcy-court protection. According to Devlin Barrett from the Associated Press states "A federal judge agreed to a settlement fining WorldCom $750 million for its $11 billion accounting scandal, saying tougher measures might harm the giant telecommunications companys 50,000 employees and quash hopes for investors."

We are hoping for the sake of our economy, corporate employees, the shareholders and our major businesses that we, as a nation, can more readily recognize the accounting pitfalls that we have seen in recent years. I think WorldCom is paying a severe penalty, but they are doing their best to right the wrongs they have done in the past. WorldCom has vowed not to violate any more laws and also hire the appropriate personnel. We see this as a good start for WorldCom and a definite positive future.

The field of intelligence testing has been in development for nearly a century. As there appears to be no hard and fast definition of intelligence, individual researchers have focused on developing tests to measure various components of intelligence according to their own personal interests. One such example is "the Flynn Effect", James R. Flynn's discovery that "IQ scores increased from one generation to the next for all countries for which data existed" (Flynn, 14). Beginning with the standardized test developed by Alfred Binet in 105, the field has expanded to include hundreds of tests. One highly regarded example is the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale.

Alfred Binet (185-111) was a pioneer in the field of intelligence testing. Unlike most professionals of his time, Binet's interest lay in the processes of the healthy mind. In the hope of helping all children to achieve the highest available level of formal education, he developed a test to measure their reasoning abilities, aside from knowledge gained from education. To set the standard, children were tested according to chronological age on skills such as following commands, arranging objects, naming items and copying patterns. Later, children were given tests meant for children of different ages, the goal being to determine the child's "mental age." The data from these trials would lead to the concept of the "intelligence quotient" (IQ).

In 116, Stanford University psychologist Lewis Terman revised Binet's format to provide comparison standards for American children and adults. The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale was further revised in 17 and 160 to adjust for changes in attitudes and the evolution of natural abilities. Over the years, the Stanford-Binet has come to place more emphasis on the taker's verbal ability, making it "culturally biased" in the eyes of many researchers. Regardless of arguments for or against, it is one of the most widely used intelligence tests.

The "Flynn Effect" explores the results of standardized tests given to various populations over time. His research showed that, regardless of the country tested, IQ scores increased from one generation to the next. Some explanations for the effect include the increasing quality of education in general; the fact that most societies become more sophisticated over time; and better overall nutrition worldwide. Because the effect showed in the results of non-verbal tests, Flynn came to think his subjects' problem solving abilities increased rather than their level of intelligence.

Custom Essays on Intelligence Testing

While there are arguments to support or deny the validity of intelligence testing, the fact remains that most modern societies rely heavily on their results. Those who fare well on the tests receive a great deal of attention and encouragement. They are often provided with opportunities not usually offered to "normal" people. This can lead to enormous pressure on children to strive for perfection and absolute success. Those who score in the normal or low range are most often ignored by teachers, or "socially promoted", as long as they are well behaved.

As Faith would have it Young Goodman Brown met face to face with the devil. For some odd reason he was drawn near to what seemed to be hell. Goodman Browns ordinary and normal life dramatically changed one dark and lonely night in the shadows of the forest. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the method of foreshadowing to draw the reader into the suspenseful story.

Hawthorne uses the word faith in the story, both as Browns wifes name and as the literal meaning of the word faith. When Faith is introduced Hawthorne basically tells the reader her name Faith is foreshadowing, And Faith as the wife aptly named… This implies that faith is involved in the story and Faith will have an influence on Goodman Browns faith. Faith goes on to explain, Pray, tarry with this night dear husband, of all nights of the year! She is trying to impede him from advancing on with his journey. Its almost comical how Hawthorne drives the point to the reader that whatever Brown has to face later in the night will be of an evil fate.

When Goodman Brown was leaving Faith and her pink ribbons behind, he thought to himself, Methought, as she spoke, there was trouble in her face, as if a dream had warned her, what work is to be done to-night. Brown knew that there was danger lurking in the forest. What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow! His preconceived notion of what lied ahead almost caused him to stay home with Faith. As Fate would have it he decided to go into the forest instead.

When Goodman Brown meets his companion in the forest he explains to his traveling partner about the worries he has about the journey. But, were I go on with thee, how should I meet the eye of that good old man, our minister, at Salem village? Oh, his voice would make me tremble both Sabbath day and lecture day! This shows that whatever is going to happen during the night is going to make Goodman Brown not be able to look his preacher in the eye. As the story turns out Brown is unable to look his minister in the eye because of the ministers participation in the satanic activities.

Cheap Custom Essays on As Fate would Have It

While hiding in the woods Goodman Brown overhears his traveling companion and Goody Cloyse, his catechism teacher from his youth, having a conversation about the nights events in the forest. Goody Cloyse explains to Goodmans partner, …I made up my mind to foot it; for they tell me there is a nice young man to be taken into communion to-night. Throughout the story Hawthorne continues to make reference to the fact Goodman Brown is young and wholesome. Goody Cloyse foreshadows that Goodman Brown will be the one to be taken to into communion at the nights ceremony.

Hawthorne uses characters names, actions, and verbal communications to foreshadow the coming events adds to the overall effectiveness of his narratives. His satiric way of writing, and strong use of foreshadowing is comical because the reader can always predict what will happen. The fate of Young Goodman Brown was obvious because of Hawthornes strong use of the literary element foreshadowing. The foreshadowing in Young Goodman Brown

Community service writing assignment

For my community service I helped out with a forth/fifth grade combination class at Julien Elementary School. I had to do twenty hours of community service this semester. I wanted to help out at an Elementary school because I plan on being an elementary school teacher when I am older. I thought not only is this a chance to help out my community it is also a chance to get a hands on experience with the students.

I really hope that I helped out in the class a lot. From the response I got from the students along with the teacher I think I did. I hope I made as much of an impression on the students as they did on me. They kids were great and really gave me a good example of what it is to be a teacher. I mostly helped them with math which was hard for me because of the fact that it has been a while since I was in forth grade and had to do the math they are doing. I mostly helped the students who were having trouble in a subject and need extra attention. I helped out the teacher a lot because it just so happened that the time I was there he had a heart attack and was gone for quite a while. The students had a different sub for at least weeks while I was there. Since I had got to know the students quite well during my time there, I helped out the subs. Even though I was only there for about hours a day I think I made an impression on the students.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on community service

The student that I helped the most was a forth grade boy named Brenden. He was a student who need extra attention and had trouble with a lot of things. He had ADD and so he had a lot of trouble paying attention. I became good friends with Brenden. He is a great kid and I learned a lot from him. The teacher has to take care of a whole class and he doesn't have much time to focus on one student if they are having trouble. Brenden had a lot of trouble not only with school, but a lot with other students. He had a little bit of a temper problem and the other students would make fun of him because of his ADD. I helped him a lot with his problems and it got to the point where if he had a problem he would only talk to me about it. I became really close with him as if he were a little brother.

Because this is what I planning to do in the future I think this assignment meant a lot more to me then other students in my class. It may not have help out the community as much as I wanted it to, but I hope I made a difference in at least one of those students to make them a better person; that's what it is all about isn't it. I learned a lot about myself through this experience. I learned that it takes a lot more time then I have thought before to teach students something. They all have potential to learn, but they don't have the focus. Being so young they just want to have fun and enjoy life. It is hard to keep them focus and willing to learn. It gave me a lot of tips of what to expect and do in the future. I don't think there was a negative thing about me helping at Julien and I would defiantly do it again. Most of all I hope I helped the students as much as they helped me.

Most of my interviews were done at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. What I found out about what people think is the best thing about family is, majority of them answered the love that you can't find anywhere else. The respect and dignity that is upheld in the family, the support that is there when times are tough. However, the downfall of it all is the fact that one day someone in the family will past away. This was the main concern in all of my interviews. My interview ranged from the age groups 18-45.

All my interviews were done with Samoan males. The attitude of these men and their involvement in infant and childcare are very understandable because it sounds exactly like my fathers attitude. When the infant is born, the father will be there to support the wife and infant. He will help change the diapers, shower the kid, and feed the infant. The father will be there from ages 1 to about just to create that bond. However, from ages 5 and up the child will not be told what to do anymore. This is where the discipline kicks in. The father in a Samoan household does not say much, but when he says something to the child, the child will more likely listen out 10 times more to the father than the mother. This is the attitude of men towards infant and childcare.

Derogatory words

Words in general are quite innocent; it is the way in which they are used that gives them the power to minimize and offend. The use of derogatory terms, especially those in reference to race or religion, control our society in certain ways because of the power these words have in affecting the way different races may or may not interact. There are several offensive words that are used to minimize another race or religion, such as "towel head", "camel jockey" and "sand nigger", all used in reference to people of Middle Eastern ethnicity. The one word that has caused the most problems within America thus far has to be the word 'Nigger.'

White America is generally the main group of people who use the word "nigger" in a demeaning way. In the essay "A Question of Language", Gloria Naylor uses a young white boy in her third-grade class as an example of white Americas insensitive use of the word. In the class, she remembers the young white boy getting a much lower score on a math test and she proceeds to comment on his low score, in turn rubbing it in. The boy then became embarrassed and in response called Gloria a "nigger."The boy had most likely learned the word at home and was told that "nigger" was a word used in reference to someone who is less than, or not equal to the person using it, showing how white America feels about the meaning of the word "nigger."

Gloria Naylor then shows that African-Americans can use the word in such ways that give it new meanings, ones that aren't meant to offend or diminish another human being. Naylor introduces her family, and gives several examples of how they use the word "nigger" in a positive way. Instead of using "nigger" as a term of humiliation, her family uses the word as a term of differentiation. For example, when a person says 'That's my nigger' it's meant in a positive way, meaning, that's my friend or my buddy. White America has given the word nigger a very negative connotation.

Buy cheap Derogatory Words term paper

As our countrys majority, white America has the most influence on such demeaning terms as the word "nigger." Such influence over the consensus shows how powerful one word can be when it is used in a malicious way. The use of this one word gives many people a feeling of superiority over people of the African-American race, while at the same time making many African Americans feel extremely inferior. A degrading word can have a painful impact if it is allowed to affect that person, but true strength comes from a person who can withstand such remarks and not let them hurt in the way intended. The effect of the word "nigger" is felt everyday because the majority of America still uses the word negatively.

Even without the word "nigger," there would still be several other words meant to degrade the ethnicity of another. No matter what people say, you cannot control the thoughts of another, so the majority of people will always think of the word nigger negatively. Regardless of one's race, ethnicity, religion, or other characteristics, everyone is negatively affected when the spirit of another person's culture is diminished by ignorance, misunderstanding, prejudice, and hatred.

Santiago- Santiago is a wise old fisherman. He has been fishing for many years. He loves baseball and is a big fan of "The Great DiMaggio"

Manolin- Manolin is a young boy who is a good friend of Santiago. He brings Santiago food when he is hungry. He fishes with Santiago almost every day.

Plot Summary Santiago has not caught a fish for 84 days but since 85 is his lucky number he has a good feeling about today. Manolin's parents will not let him go fishing with Santiago because they feel he is bad luck. They want him to fish with a different group with better luck. Santiago goes out fishing and drops his lines in the water. He hooks a huge fish and he knows it is a marlin. It drags him out to sea for three days. Santiago would use his other lines to still fish so that he could have some food. On the third day he finally caught the fish and killed it. He tied this huge marlin to the side of his skiff. As he started to head back home a shark came up and took a bite out of the marlin. Santiago killed the shark with his harpoon but also lost his harpoon while doing that. He knew that more sharks would smell the blood and try to eat the more of the marlin so he tied a knife to one of his oars to fight them off. Two more sharks came and he killed them but not until took more of the marlin. While killing the second shark his blade broke. He was determined to fight off the sharks and all he had was a club. A pack of sharks came and he tried to fight them off but by the time they left they had taken all of the meat on it leaving just its head, its bones, and its tail. He sailed back home, feeling bad for the marlin because it would still be alive if he had not killed it. Once he got home the people saw the skeleton of this huge fish. Manolin was very worried about Santiago and promised to always go fishing with him from then on.

Themes The theme of this book is that not all things in life turn out to have a happy ending.

important quotes that relate to the theme or are important to the meaning of the story

1) "Fish, I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends."

) "You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell for food, he thought. You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman. You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after. If you love him, it is not a sin to kill him. Or is it more?"

) "I wish I had the boy."

Important symbols I do not think there is any symbols in this story

Important Scenes I think the most important scene was the one where he fought off the sharks with the club because this shows his determination to bring the fish in safely.

Truth

Truth may be the most simply complex concept known to man. It is the easiest task to perform, and yet it seems to be the most difficult thing to ever come across. There is always someone who wants it revealed, but with that comes another someone who would do anything to keep it covered up; and because of this, truth will always be a struggle to withhold. The uniform definition of truth is conformity with fact or reality; a verified or indisputable fact. But to actually understand the concept of truth, one must look much deeper at its meaning. Truth is one thing that is not tainted, suspicious, or deceitful. Truth is pure, it is perfect, and it is honest, there is nothing like it in the world.

Purity runs parallel with truth in that they are clear, straightforward, free from blemishes, absolute, utter, and sheer. The list is endless. When the truth seeps from a person's lips the sound of the voice is pure because it is spoken with confidence. They know that there is nothing and nobody that can dispute what they are about to say, because it is the unmistakable truth. Truth, as well as purity, is not guilty, evil, or polluting, it is everything that is good and innocent in life. Truth is pure because it cleanses society with guileless knowledge and rids the world of ignorance.

It is impossible to argue with the truth, it is what is right and what is actual, it is flawless. Perfection is much like truth because they are both excellent and complete beyond practical and theoretical improvement. They are accurate, correct and exact in every detail, it is undeniable. Once the truth is told there is no need to ask questions or ponder any further about the subject at hand, everything has been clarified perfectly. A truthful explanation is immaculate and leaves no trail of inquiry. One may see something that, in their eyes, is so beautiful that it is the closest thing to perfection. And the reason it appears to be perfect is because an aspect of it has reached their soul and was true to their heart. And in this sense, truth is not only heard but it is seen and felt at the same time.

An honest person is valued and respected among everyone in the world. The most highly regarded quality in a friend, acquaintance, or even an enemy is honesty because it is simply irreplaceable. An honest person speaks the truth under any circumstances and because they allow themselves to do that, any opinion of theirs is going to be taken seriously and not lightly. Some may think that being honest and truthful is naïve because bad things have been known to happen to people that just lay everything out there for the whole world to see. But maybe if more people were like that nobody would have anything to hide, and maybe our world could be a praiseworthy place. Mankind has gotten to a point where the truth is so rare that when it is put in our faces, we're skeptical and taken back by it. It shouldn't be like that; we should applaud the truth and the people with the courage to speak it. Because no matter where life takes us truth will always be the one thing that is pure, the one thing that is perfect, and the one thing that is honest. The truth shall set you free.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

In 1884, Samuel L. Clemens under his pen name, Mark Twain wrote one of the most controversial novels in American literature. There has been increased discussion of the racist ideas spoken in the novel. In some cases, Schools have gone as far as to ban this book from their classrooms. Many parents are ambiguous to if they want their children to read this novel and they venture of them doing so. This novel should be in all public schools because it has not meant in a racist fashion. Critics have argued Mark Twain's, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a racist novel do to the fact that excessively overuses the word nigger and depicts a black slave, Jim. When people read the novel they have to look to the deeper meaning of the story and "read between the lines."

Firstly, Critics argue the overuse of the word "nigger" in this story. One example was the word "nigger" was an expression of the time also, "the word was the common parlance of the pandemic bigotry at the time and place of Mark Twain's novel," (Hentoff 1). Another example, It was a word to

define an African Americans during the post civil war era. In the book after Aunt Sally heard about the steamboat explosion she spoke "Good gracious! anybody hurt? Nom, comes the answer. Killed a nigger, (Twain, ). The last example was in the inception of the book, the word was used to degrade and insult the African American's, yet in the middle and demise of the book the word was meant to only to define an African American.

Secondly, the depiction of Jim was also took my critics to be a racist. The first description of Jim was negative. First of all, the reader it told that Jim is illiterate, childish, not very bright and extremely superstitious. Another example is that African Americans were described as "Strange niggers would stand with their mouths open and look him all over, same as if he was a wonder," (Twain, 8) when merely just listening to a story. An additional example is in the origin of the book, Huck was unable to look past the fact that Jim was black but by the end of the book, Huck was able to condone the fact that Jim was black and he was able to see how Jim was a person and an extrovert one at that. Until we embrace Jim and all that he represents . . . we will forever pale as a people, will be historically colorless (Chadwick-Joshua, xxii). The final example, Jim and the millions of other slaves in the south were not permitted in formal education. Twain is portraying Jim, a very realistic slave in the South during this time period.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is deeply criticized and insulted by critics. Critics say that there is an overuse of the word "nigger", and the portrayal of Jim. As explained, these are false accusations and the critics didn't look deep enough into the book to find another meaning. Twains ability to be articulate allows Americans to see how life was like before the 100's. This novel should be in all public schools because it has not meant in a racist fashion. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn will be forever more one of the most controversial novels in American literature.

The Weak WomanWebster's dictionary defines the word weak in many ways. However, the definition used by the storyteller in the story of the Widow of Ephesus is one denoting a deficit in intelligence, judgment, and lacking moral strength or force of character. This is the way he describes the main character in his story and women in general. The idea that women are so feeble in body and in mind is a sexist viewpoint that should be scorned upon by readers today.

Written by Gaius Petronius in the First Century of our common era, "The Widow of Ephesus" was a tale told to the author while traveling. The authenticity of it is unknown but was originally told in humor to calm and entertain a crew of seamen on a ship. The creator of the story is a man named Eumolpus, and he apparently was attempting to gain ground with his argument that women were impetuous in love and could not resist a handsome man, even to the point of forgetting their families to have an affair. And so the story was spawned and repeated for all and any to hear.

Cheap College Papers on The Weak Woman

Interestingly, the captain of the crew is a man called Lichas and aboard with him is his lover, Tryphena, whom had had a brief affair with Eumolpus previously. Whether Eumolpus was trying to make light of his ability to woo Lichas mistress or not is not known. At the end of the tale though, it is noted that Tryphena is blushing, perhaps because of her ability to relate to the circumstances, and Lichas is upset with the story itself and the characters.

In the story, a virtuous woman is widowed and she keeps a vigil over her

Walker,

husband's corpse for days, refusing to leave. A soldier finds her mourning over her husband, scarcely alive, and comforts her and entreats her to get nourishment. She finally gives in and following that, also gives in to his tempting words of love. When, the soldier gets in trouble for neglecting his duties, the widow comes up with a plan to spare him his life at the cost of her dead husbands honor. Their plan works, all are fooled, and the widow and her soldier lover are both spared.

Eumolpus arrogantly uses this illustration to theorize that woman are morally weak and will do anything for love. At the end of his sexist story, Lichas replies that the widow should be hung on the torture stake for what she does with her husband's body. No where does he imply that the soldier should be reprimanded even though he was well aware of her actions and even obviously helped her carry them out. They feel that only the woman is to blame and that her deeds alone are deserving of death.

In today's society, women have worked hard to maintain a reputation deserving of respect. Even so, there are those who still believe that women should stay in second place to men in everything. For those ones, stories like these are held in high regard, even though they are obviously not based on fact or logic. The very idea that women are so feeble in body and in mind is one that should be scorned upon by all readers, regardless of their sex or race. We have come a long way from that time period where women were so degraded. Such literature does nothing more than paint a picture of how backwards civilization used to be.

Essay Topic; "They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together." Do you agree with Nick's assessment? Discuss with detailed reference to the text.

The comment, "They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together." is made by Nick to Gatsby when he went to warn him following the fatal road accident. This assessment is significant because it shows his change of attitude towards Gatsby whom he had previously considered to be as immoral and decadent as his wealthy friends. Nick's change of heart is brought about by having a chance to really talk over breakfast; the first time Gatsby had told him about his life story.

Gatsby was revealed to Nick as a self-made man who had been born very poor, worked hard as a fisherman to become wealth, then been cheated out of his fortune by his business partner's wife. Poor again, he met Daisy, "The first nice girl he had ever known." and fell in love with her finding "He had committed himself to the following of a grail." The war intervened and Gatsby went away for a few years. On his return, he found Daisy married to Tom, but he thought she married for money and their love would remain unchanged. He worked at building his wealth, and dreamed of winning Daisy's love. Although he became very wealthy Gatsby didn't change his mind and still loved Daisy.

The descriptions in the novel of the members of upper class society make it easy to agree with Nick's assessment of them as "a rotten crowd." This crowd represents the decadence and hedonistic attitudes of rich people in the post-war American society. Tom Buchanan, who has been cheating on his wife, is shown to be selfish and uncaring by this comment about Mr.Wilson, "He's so dumb he doesn't know he's alive."

Buy cheap The Great Gatsby term paper

Daisy is portrayed as cynical and shallow, someone addicted to party-going and able to comment "Sophisticated God, I'm sophisticated." The description of Daisy the day before her wedding given by her bridesmaid, Jordan to Nick suggests that Daisy married not for love, but for money. She had been discovered "as drunk as a monkey" and had told people "Daisy's change' her mine." She had however collected herself and married Tom the next day "without so much as a shiver."

Her friend, Jordan is described by Nick as "incurably dishonest" who had "begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young." She was Daisy's companion in their partying and another member of crowd.

In assessing Gatsby, Nick seems to recognise that he and Gatsby have in common basic morality and spirituality lacking in upper class society. Nick describes himself as "one of the few honest people that I have ever known." Also he recognises Gatsby's "heightened sensitivity" and feels himself allied to him in "…a feeling of defiance, of scornful solidarity… against them all." (the others)

The way people in America behaved at this period makes it easy to agree with Nick's comment of them as "a rotten bunch." This 'lost generation' has lost their value of life and Tom, Daisy and Jordan were part of this group of people. In this sense, Gatsby, who had an innocent and romantic dream, is worth much more than those people who are prostituting themselves for money.

Usually I wouldn¡¦t take this abuse without a rebuttal but there is something about Ogidi¡¦s tone of voice that pushes me to continue this rigorous routine. Perhaps its because in the back of my mind I know that he is looking out for my immediate and long-term results and that its not out of spite, anger, or as an abuse of his authority over me.

Ogidi has always pushed me to my physical limits to progress my tennis game. Earning his respect required hard work and toil, both of which I put forth because I admire his ability to play tennis. He is a tall, gangly, 8 year old, African-American man who laughs like a gangster from an old black and white film. Throughout our friendship on and off the tennis court we have shared many deep thoughts to one another. Our conversations have spanned from technique on striking the tennis ball to philosophical and religious issues. I have learned to look for the next point and not to dwell on the past. The fact that we contrast so much makes our friendship all the more comical.

Speaking of differences, Ogidi is extremely intimidating, unlike myself. The first time I met him I panicked just approaching the court he was on. I stumbled over my clumsy feet and my hands trembled to the point that my racquet fell out of my sweaty palms. I don¡¦t know whether it is because he is a foot taller than me or because he looks angry most of the time, but he just has an unconscious ability to make a person¡¦s heart beat just a little faster in fear. However, he also has an affable side that has kept me sane through the craziest of times.

During my strenuous junior year, for instance, Ogidi provided me a way to relax, have fun, and release my aggression through tennis. He changed from being just a trusted friend to becoming a sage advisor. His wisdom guided me through my hectic year and boosted my confidence into the tennis season. I would end up avenging losses against people I thought I never could beat at tennis and he helped me relax by exposing me to daily meditation exercises. Without a doubt Ogidi Obi has influenced me in a larger way than I had ever imagined he has given me a better eye for the tennis court and a better vision for life.

September 11, 001, changed the way I look at life.

I awoke to the disruptive blare of the alarm clock that signaled the start of another monotonous morning schedule. Under the dim glow of shining stars and with traffic lights as my guide, I headed down to the church for a droning class of scripture study. Life was good; I felt invincible.

My mother drove into the parking lot to pick me up as usual in her white Explorer--she appeared neither rushed nor alarmed. Her demeanor revealed nothing to indicate the devastation of the news she delivered. Her exclamation, "It's the start of World War III," rocked my body. I could not register her words as she explained what had happened. I tried to picture the two buildings, symbols of capitalism, colliding planes, and fireballs,a vision of Armageddon. I thought about Hollywood's version--"Independence Day"--but this was the real thing, no creation from tinsel town. I tried to absorb the prattle of radio reports and at the same time grasp my mom's babble as we drove home.

This day would be devoted to understanding what had happened to make my mom think that a world war would be started based on what had occurred earlier in the morning. Was it really the beginning of the end?

I immediately turned on the television; it would remain on for the rest of the day. The image of two towers, like two giant tombstones, one burning from the impact, one intact, assaulted my vision, creating a permanent imprint. Minutes later a plane struck the second tower, creating a massive scar in its side. It occurred to me that what happened might have been a coordinated effort. Was someone from another country behind this, or were there citizens of the United States willing to kill thousands of people to prove a point?

Information from the radio both enlightened and confused me as I negotiated the familiar turns on my way to Bullard. News that the first tower had fallen, sending out a cloud of dust like a volcano, greeted me as I arrived at my first period class. How many people just died? When had we ever been attacked on our homeland? History had taught me about the infamy of December 7, 141. Was Pearl Harbor to World War II as the towers were to World War III? I had many more questions than answers.

Students huddled in groups to hear the news for the first time or to grasp "old" information. The expressions on their faces, like masks from a Greek tragedy, matched the way I felt. Televisions provided images and background noise to all irrelevant activities. The teacher attempted to divert our attention by starting a lesson plan. There was no hope. Eyes were glued to the "box." Eventually the teacher stopped trying to teach and was likewise snared by the television's web of shock and terror. Any bit of news proved all-absorbing.

Information from the media would continue to bombard and muddle my mind for days and weeks to come. What might come next was impossible to predict. Safety and security vanished with the onslaught of each new revelation of horror. My thoughts had a new edge. September 11 had sharpened my senses, heightened my defense and increased my apprehension. The future lay before me like a bad dream and I knew that life as I knew it had evaporated.

Future. When one hears that word, one thinks of towering skyscrapers piercing the clouds, swift hovercrafts emitting beeping noises, and servile robots on wheels. But a thought that is not popular amongst human minds is what the future holds in store for animals, much less jackass penguins. The purpose of this paper is to inform you of the possible adaptations that the jackass penguin could evolve in the future. As you will see, the environment is a major component in evolution. Let us take a journey into the year 07 . . .

The jackass penguin used to live off the coast of South Africa. It did not live on the mainland because of the dangers of predators. Because of global warming, the polar ice caps melted (as we all know) and caused many of the islands to be covered by the rising ocean levels. This left only the larger islands protruding from the ascending waters, causing the penguins to spend more time underwater. The jackass penguin, in turn, has adapted to its aquatic lifestyle by evolving certain body parts.

One thing that the jackass penguin has had to adapt to is the increase in temperature as a result of global warming. A larger head is used to give off body heat. The lighter color of the fur absorbs less heat while the reduced number of fat layers help to keep in less warmth.

The jackass penguin has also had to adapt to a more aquatic life. A larger beak is used to catch more fish as it is harder to catch them than ever before (they, too, have evolved to better survive against predators). Stiffer wings and larger webbed feet help the penguin swim faster, while a stronger tail aids in steering. Furthermore, a streamlined body gives the penguin more freedom in the water.

Write my Essay on The Effects of the Environment on the Jackass Penguin

You may be wondering how the jackass penguin evolved from a chubby, dark creature into a one adapted to its environment. The answer lies in Darwin's theory of natural selection, where organisms that are more fit are more likely to survive and produce offspring. As the jackass penguin's surrounding's changed, penguins that retained heat or were not suited for swimming were unfit and died out, whereas the small number of penguins with lighter fur and better swimming capabilities survived and reproduced. This "natural selection" has caused the population of ideally suited penguins to rise and the number of unfit penguins to decline.

And so we see how the jackass penguin has evolved to better survive in harsh environments. Join us next time, where we will be discussing the jackass kookaburra...

Organisms evolve when environment changes. The jackass penguin, for example, could evolve a larger head, lighter color, and less layers of fat to regulate heat, and a larger beak, stiffer wings, a stronger tail, larger webbed feet, and a streamlined body for swimming. Thus, we see that the environment is the most important factor in the evolution of an organism.

The Great Society

The economy leading up to the year of 164 was doing very well. Unemployment was below four percent Gross National Product was growing at approximately six percent. Inflation was less then three percent. The setting was ripe for the president to create "A War on Poverty."

In the beginning of LBJ's tenure as president he continued Kennedy's work in developing programs to help society in many aspects. The programs that he devised were called the Great Society. Lyndon proposed "A War on Poverty" with the Economic Opportunity Act. The programs under the act consisted primarily of the Job Corps; community action programs; volunteers against poverty; financial aid to low income families; and Medicare. Sub programs included racial injustice and education.

The Job Corps were created to help younger students to advance in careers who were unable to go to college for one reason or another. It developed the skills that they had and prepared them for a better quality of life through work study and work training programs. The program is still in existence in 00 and helps over 70,000 students a year.

All over the country Community Actions Programs would be used to attack poverty at the home level. Each community would have its own program tailored for that community. The residents for the community would develop the plan to attack poverty and stomp it out. This was a good plan as it would be created by the people who it was affecting the most. The government would not have to come in and create a fix for multiple places. A plan would be provided to the government by the people who were affected. That way the problem would be specialized to the area and not just generalized to cover the whole country. After approval plans were mostly funded by the government to get them started.

Where would all these people come from for the Job Corps and the Community Action Programs? Volunteers against poverty would be requested by the government to help in the undertaking of poverty in America. These people were trained and used where necessary to help end poverty.

Financial aid was provided to lower income families. People who needed to be re-trained in another field could support families with the aid besides learning a new trade. This would enable them to earn more money to support families without the aid of the government.

To watch over and implement The Economic Act, LBJ created a new position to report directly to him on the progress of the programs. Sargent Shriver was appointed to this Office of Economic Opportunity. He would work with the new programs and existing agencies on the War on Poverty.

The last issue of major concern addressed in this paper is the non-existence of medical aid to the elderly. In the sixties there was concern over the amount of people in the country who were unable to attain good health care once they were retired. Insurance was expensive and going up. Older people that were ill depended on children to help out in the event of a devastating illness. Medicare was implemented to insure that the elderly would receive good heath care at lower expense to themselves.

The softball field is a place that I can go to forget all the stresses of my life. After a long day of school or work, I drive over to my high school softball diamond and sit on rd base. During my 4 years in high school I played varsity earning two most valuable player awards and many league titles. After 4 years of working hard, I was offered a full athletic scholarship to play softball at the college level. The softball field symbolizes a place of purity, a freedom of mind, and personal achievement. I can honestly say that the softball diamond is my most comfortable place in the world. The softball diamond is the most invigorating atmosphere when the senses are at full intensity.

My first step on the field during my first college game was an experience I will never forget. The senses I experienced should have been so familiar but they seemed foreign to me. As I walked to my position, I could smell the freshly cut grass in the outfield. It was so refreshing because I knew that the game was close to beginning. The crowd was cheering in the stands while many of them watched their college freshmen walk onto the field for their first college softball game. The crushed brick had a different sent compared to the red sand in my high school field, I felt like it was the real thing.

As I reached rd base, I caught a whiff of the aroma of the Tiger Balm that I applied on my sore arm muscle before the game began. The minty fresh fragrance cleared my nostrils as I prepared myself for the approaching hour and a half. As a gamely ritual, I reached down and grabbed a hand full of the infield and held it there for a moment. The texture as a whole was soft and much of it fell through my fingers. For just a moment I felt like I was back in high school playing with my friends from grade school. The thought made me feel secure and I had a sensation of belonging. The old dry leather of my glove filled my nostrils as I bent it into my desired shape.

I was in my position ready and waiting when the umpire yelled out, "LET'S PLAY BALL." The feeling of anxiety surged through my veins like arctic water, but I knew that all my hard work was just moments away from paying off. The children with their mothers started screaming and the man on the loud speaker said the name of the first batter. She stepped to the plate and slapped her bat against the metal cleats on her shoes to empty the dirt from the bottom. After the first pitch my uneasiness slightly went away.

The rest of the game flew by and I can not even remember the details, but those first 10 minutes are still so vivid in my mind. I will never forget the feeling of complete numbness over my entire body while experiencing something so amazing. The senses of a softball game are so important to me because of the event. Sometimes when I am walking down the street and a woman passes me wearing a certain perfume, my mind takes me back to when my first grade teacher was explaining how to read. Senses can make something so short and unimportant into something that will never be forgotten. From the smell of the cut grass, to the screaming little children, the softball will forever be in my mind as well as in my heart.

The march occurred in Derry on 0th January 17, and was illegal as the Stormont Parliament banned all The march was by the Catholic Nationalists who were demonstrating for Catholic rights and protesting against internment. Internment was where the police could arrest anyone who they suspected were involved in the IRA without trial. This angered many Catholics, as many that were arrested were not involved with the IRA.. Some eyewitnesses said the number was around 0, 000 however the Widgery report says it was between 000-5000. The eyewitnesses think this because they were at the march so therefore think this. It could be seen as valid as the eyewitnesses had attended the march. However one could argue that this source is unreliable as the eyewitnesses are biased as they are Catholics and want to play up the numbers to show that there is strong opposition by the Nationalists against the Stormont government, that brought about internment. The Widgery report has claimed the amount of people was a lot less than stated by the eyewitnesses. They this due to evidence given by people who were there perhaps the army, or Police. This interpretation could be valid and reliable as the army was at the march so would probably know the amount of people there. However, this interpretation could be unreliable because the Widgery report' sources are probably mainly Protestants so therefore are biased so hence will play down the number.

A riot developed and many eyewitnesses say that this riot was not very intense. The witnesses think this because they were at the march so therefore could be reliable. However one would probably say that it is slightly unreliable because the eyewitnesses are probably so will try to sympathise with the fellow protesters. Some recent information suggests that one person was killed and the army claims that it was in response to a single shot by the IRA and the army thought the person who shot was the man they killed. However, there were no weapons found at the scene of the shooting. The army thinks this because the soldiers involved had told them this so this source could be reliable. However many would argue this source unreliable as the army are biased. One could say the army is trying to defend its actions so therefore saying the man killed had shot could justify the killing. At around .55pm the riot on William Street began breaking up as paratroopers were given permission to begin an arrest operation. . The 1st Battalion Parachute regiment launched an operation to clear all remaining protesters and were specifically told not to continue the battle down Rossville St. (logbook of Brigade supports his). At approximately 4.10 PM soldiers of the above regiment began opening fire at protesters on Roseville St. The shooting ended in 1 people dying and shooting occurred in four main places. The British army also says that 1 soldiers fired their weapons and shot 108 rounds in total. Most of these facts are agreed however the events that occurred on Rossville St. It is unclear and events that occurred are disputed. The soldiers claim they were under pressure from gunfire and nail bombs bun eyewitness accounts say that guns or bombs were used by the people who died and that no guns or bombs were fo
