define an African Americans during the post civil war era. In the book after Aunt Sally heard about the steamboat explosion she spoke "Good gracious! anybody hurt? Nom, comes the answer. First of all, the reader it told that Jim is illiterate, childish, not very bright and extremely superstitious. Another example is that African Americans were described as "Strange niggers would stand with their mouths open and look him all over, same as if he was a wonder," (Twain, 8) when merely just listening to a story. An additional example is in the origin of the book, Huck was unable to look past the fact that Jim was black but by the end of the book, Huck was able to condone the fact that Jim was black and he was able to see how Jim was a person and an extrovert one at that. Until we embrace Jim and all that he represents . . . we will forever pale as a people, will be historically colorless (Chadwick-Joshua, xxii). The final example, Jim and the millions of other slaves in the south were not permitted in formal education. Twain is portraying Jim, a very realistic slave in the South during this time period.
