The comment, "They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together." is made by Nick to Gatsby when he went to warn him following the fatal road accident. This assessment is significant because it shows his change of attitude towards Gatsby whom he had previously considered to be as immoral and decadent as his wealthy friends. Nick's change of heart is brought about by having a chance to really talk over breakfast; the first time Gatsby had told him about his life story.

Gatsby was revealed to Nick as a self-made man who had been born very poor, worked hard as a fisherman to become wealth, then been cheated out of his fortune by his business partner's wife.
