To begin with I had quite a bit of trouble finding any resource for information on the Internet. That raised the immediate question on whether or not there is any real interest from the Canadian Government or individual bodies on the topic of renewable resource research at all. But the future is not quite as bleak as that. There are several laboratories conducting research on this field. One is finding ways to make a hybrid diesel fuel called biodiesel. Another is even trying to use plants as a way of creating a renewable resource.

My first point was that there where not that many articles that I could find that had much relevance to this topic. That immediately made me decide that there needs to be more effort in this field of research. This is a) a possibly very lucrative industry with todays smarter consumer b) this is beginning to become a very need thing that is not having as much dependence on fossil fuels, which I might add are killing our planet. So all in all the people high up in either the government or the companies with enough money to sponsor such research are not taking the interest they should in this so dire a situation we are in.

However there is some (I say that very reservedly) interest in this topic. For example there is a research team at Guelph University that has come up with a way to make a type of bio-diesel. The bio part is because it is made up of different biodegradable components such as recycled restaurant fat, soybeans, and vegetable oils. The product is not on the market just yet but this is a major step in the right direction as far as using fossil fuels is going. Even though the bio-diesel has been proven safe on engines the production and supply is very low. Almost a supply on demand. This has led to the creation of a hybrid fuel that is anywhere form two to twenty percent bio diesel. Even with just two percent biodiesel that means a twenty-five percent increase in soybean production that's more than 600,000 acres. Even still interest in biodiesel has occurred just recently in Ontario. Its gone from nobodys interested to nobody can keep up.

Another laboratory has been conducting research on plants and how they limit oxygen and energy to the environment. Since the lab has been doing so they have come up with several new technologies that analyze the concentration of oxygen and its movement from the plant to intercellular bacteria. This has led to the discovery of how the plant moves energy to the bacteria as well so then that made the researchers wonder if they could use this as a renewable source of energy from the plants themselves. This technology is still in its infancy.

So in conclusion I feel that there should perhaps be more interest in this subject but that doesnt mean there isnt any. However when it comes to blowing up old restaurant fat in our engines to make them move or letting plants grow to create energy we are on the right track and hopefully we (as humans) shall come to our senses and realise that we are in trouble. I just hope that happens before its too late.

In the poem "My Identity" by Helen Bell, the persona attempts to convince the reader that in order to be a true Australian one needs to have been born in Australia of 'Anglo-Celtic' parents, speak Australian English, and dress and act in a certain way. She constructs all those who live in Australia but do not comply with these standards that she says as being foreign. Bell conveys these views through the first person point of view of the persona, the contrasting images of different types of 'Australians' and the language that the persona uses.

Bell impresses her views of the 'true Aussie' on the reader through the images she creates of what Australian life should entail. Her persona begins by describing herself as a white Australian, one who speaks Australian English, 'dressed like an Aussie', likes to have a barbie, and likes to swim and fish. This gives the reader the impression that you can only be a 'true Aussie' if you are white, can understand and use Australian slang words and abbreviations, and loves to be in the 'great outdoors'. It also means that Australians have to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, and be quite sociable. The poem is written in 'Australian English' with the persona using slang to describe herself as a 'dinky di Aussie'. The free use of slang and abbreviations helps to construct the attitude that Australians are casual and relaxed with everybody. This attitude is further impressed upon the reader by the use of run-on lines throughout the poem. They give a sense of a calm and peaceful environment in which true Australians should be living their lives.

Bell used another set of images and sounds to describe what cannot be deemed truly Australian. The contrasting imagery that is used by Bell describes the Aboriginal people dressed in their 'foreign clothes' who do not speak English. The reader accepts that this image cannot be of a true Australian because it is different to the first image we are presented with, thus adopting Bell's views. The Aboriginal people and people from other origins are referred to as the 'others' and their clothing are deemed 'foreign'. There is emphasis put on 'THEY' in the last to convey a sense of them being completely separated from the world the persona is accustomed to. The idea that the only true Australians are the white Australians is further emphasised through Bell's use of sound and language collaboratively with the images created.

The reader is encouraged to accept the stereotype of a 'true Aussie' created by Helen Bell through the use of first person point of view. Because the reader has no other contrasting views, they are compelled to accept the attitudes offered by the persona. The first person point of view makes the poem seem more like a reflection though, and the persona is constantly questioning her beliefs, although she does back them up with her analysis of a 'true Aussie'. The point of view contributes to the stereotypical representation of an Australian in the 0th century.

Helen Bell encourages the idea that in order to be a truly Australian you need to speak English, dress like most people in Australia, love the outdoors, and be sociable and relaxed. She constructs this stereotypical representation through the collaborative use of imagery and sound, and the first person point of view. My Identity by Helen Bell

How does Government Relations affect businesses?

Government Relations supports corporate goals through two key driving philosophies, public policy leadership and maximizing risk management capabilities. Using these goals and philosophies, Government Relations engages in a continual planning process that allows businesses to evaluate strategic initiatives and priorities. Government Relations is more commonly known as Lobbyist.

In the article " Lobbyist The good, bad and ugly" from the Gulf Cost Christian Newspaper, the author Don McGriff tells how he view lobbyist as beneficial as well as a problem for the citizens of Alabama. Lobbyist is a group that represents people with a common interest to petition the government. ALFA Insurance helped lobby through an Act called the Insurance Premium Act of 1, which mandated a premium tax on all insurance premium of .6%. This was good for ALFA but for the citizens of Alabama they were furious.

In Florida Legislature killed the late summer "sales tax holiday," which was a small crumb of mercy it tossed the citizens for the past four years. The purpose of the "tax holiday" was to give parents a break in buying back to school clothes. In Florida lobbyists had legislation changed to raise taxes on parents who were buying their children shoes, and clothing so that the corporations of Florida can still get a fat tax break. Again this was good for Florida corporations, but not the average citizen.

Another Nation wide problem is the crisis in terms of health care and health insurance. It's becoming an unbearable cost burden for small businesses. Many small businesses have seen from 0 to 40 to 50 percent increases in their cost of health insurance. President Bush is aware of the problem and has proposed legislation to deal with it. Bush strongly agrees with "association health plans" (AHPs), which allows small businesses to pool together and spread their risk across a larger employee base, which in turn will lower health insurance premiums.

Not all lobbyists are out to please themselves. There are some whose only goal is to protect American citizens. For example if it was not for the group that argued for the Christian foundation of America we would not be able to enjoy the religious liberties we do.

In doing research about this topic I found that Government Relations or Lobbyist are very helpful for big businesses. In the examples that I gave, the lobbyist made more money for the business with out taking into consideration the citizens that would be affected. It made me take a closer look at the Government Relations area where I work. Fortis Health is actively involved in efforts to shape and steer public policy to benefit the future of the industry and its consumers. Government Relations has developed and responded to many of the critical issues affecting Fortis Health. This mission statement clearly states whom Fortis Health is looking out for. As an employee of Fortis, the Government Relations team is needed in order to make money for the company, but as a citizen it can cost me more money in the long run.

My Trip to the City That Never Sleeps

Have you ever been to the Metropolitan museum of art? Do you like art? Since my family enjoys art so much we decided to take a trip to the Metropolitan museum of art. We were also interested in the Jackie Onassis exhibit that was being shown there. We were interested in this exhibit because both of my parents grew up in the period when she was first lady. Also on our trip to the city we saw a wide variety of people who shared the same interests as my family and I. Do you know anything about Jackie Onassis?

To begin with, as we stood in front of the museum we saw big golden doors that seemed to tower over us. These doors were like an entrance to another world that was indescribable. When opening the doors a person would have to use all of their strength because of their weight. Once inside we rushed to the Jackie O' exhibit there we stood for 45 minutes just waiting to get in to the exhibit. The anticipation of what lied in front of us was so great that I couldn't stand still and kept asking questions about her and her life as first lady. After the time was up we entered the presentation of her things we stood there in awe looking at her array of clothes in many different colors and sizes. This was a woman who could wear anything and make it look good. Her clothes were as bright as the sun.

Next, walking through the halls of the museum was like walking through the White House. Every room has its own meaning and era. The first hall we came to was one with paintings of Claud Monet, one of the great masters of art. When looking at his paintings your eyes become engulfed in color and dots. If you stare at the paintings closely you can see that he used short, rapid brush strokes as if to put paint on ones finger and pressed it multiple times against the canvas. By looking at his paintings you can tell that he was a man who enjoyed the beauty of life and the world around him.

Around the corner, in the next hall were paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. In this gallery you see a self-portrait of him in a yellow hat. Pictures of flowers and vases were also displayed around the room. The works of Van Gogh are displayed in bright colors and shades of oranges, yellows, reds, and blues. You can conclude from looking at these magnificent works of art that Van Gogh was a jovial person.

As we approached the top of a wide, winding staircase we embarked on the blue period, the works of Piscaso. His style was that of a more modern era, one that displayed his works in shapes, figures and dark colors. These dark colors were an extension of his feelings of depression and out of mind state. He is one of my favorite artists because he was not afraid to be different, set his own trends, and painted modern, advanced for his time.

In conclusion, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a great place to learn about many forms of art, its style, its artists, and the issues and trends surrounding each era. When looking at art, one looks throughout the window of the past throughout the works of these most famous artists. You can also see how their ways of life were totally different from the way we see life today. When viewing the works of the masters, you feel as sense of calmness, making you see your true self, in a most relaxing way. All in all, The Met was an outstanding place to visit.

Communication, Meaning, and Signs

In chapter , emphasis is placed on the idea of communication as the generation of a meaning. In order for communication to take place, a message must be created out of signs. The message that is sent makes the receiver create his/her own meaning that is related to the meaning intended in the original message. The models in chapter are not linear; they are structural models. They focus on the set of relationships that enable a message to produce a meaning.

The center of this focus is the sign, which can be studied by semiotics. Semiotics is the study of signs and the way they work and can be broken down into three separate areas of study. The first is the sign itself and the different ways that meaning can be conveyed through it. Secondly we look at how the signs are organized through codes, or systems. Thirdly, the culture within which these codes and signs operate is studied. In semiotics, the receiver plays a more active role.

The first model of meaning that is introduced is that of C.S. Peirce. In Peirce's triangular model, a sign refers to the object, and it effects the mind of the interpretant. The interpretant is not the user of the sign, but is a mental concept of the user of the sign.

Cheap University Papers on Communication, Meaning, and Signs

Ogden and Richards produce a triangular model of meaning much like Peirce's. In this model, the referent is similar to Peirce's "object", the reference to his "interpretant," and the symbol to his "sign." The referent and reference are directly connected, as are the symbol and reference. The symbol is in the key position, organizing and directing our thoughts, or references. Our references organize our perception of reality.

Lastly, we see the triangular model of Ferdinand de Sassure. Being a linguist, Sassure was primarily interested in the relationship between words and other signs. The emphasis in his model is placed on the sign itself. The sign is a physical object with a meaning. Sassure believed that a sign consisted of a signifier and a signified. The signifier is how we perceive a sign's image, and the signified is the mental concept that is referred by it.

The sign is essential to any real understanding of semiotics. Peirce and Sassure both realized this. Peirce divided signs into three different categories. They are the icon, index, and symbol. An icon is something that resembles its object. For example, a map is an icon. An index is a sign with a direct connection with its object. The book uses the example of a sneeze being an index of a head cold. Lastly, a symbol is a sign whose connection with its object is a matter of convention, agreement, or rule. Sassure analyzes the sign by focusing on the relationship of the signified to reality. He created two ways to organize signs into codes. The first is by paradigms, which is when a particular sign is chosen out of a certain set. The second is by the way of syntagmatics. In this case, the chosen signs are combined.

Convention is also necessary to the understanding of signs. It is the social dimension of a sign and its presence is necessary to communicate.

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the word equality is the quote "all men are created equal". For me this has a lot of meaning, although it is a fairly new concept in our society. Equality means to have the same privileges or rights.

In the 150's equality was questioned and fought for throughout the 60's as the Civil Rights Movement. A main event that started some action against inequality or discrimination was when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white woman on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. It took a long time for people to comprehend that black people have the same right to sit on the bus, drink out of the same water fountain and attend the same schools as white people. Even though 50 years seems like a long time, people still do not understand this concept of equality. In the 160's equal rights took another jump with Martin Luther King Jr. He is best known for his " I Have a Dream" speech that he made in Washington D.C. during the March on Washington where 50,000 people came from all over the country to attend this important civil rights movement. Here he protested discrimination, segregation, and fair hiring in the workplace.

The Civil Rights Movement is not the only example of equality. For instance, there is also an inequality between men and women. Women had very little rights compared to those of men. They were not allowed to vote until 10 after they began a movement for their right to vote. Another example of inequality between men and women is the fact that they can have the same level of education, the same qualifications, but yet the man will have a higher salary. A further example is that a few weeks ago there was a lawsuit in Florida where a mother and daughter were suing the state for the right to go topless. They stated that they believe that it is the last law in the books, preventing true equality between men and women.

Equality has to do with people being treated equally regardless of any outside factors like race, gender, or sexual orientation. Homosexuals are also discriminated against because they choose to interact with the same sex. The basis of our society has always been religious. I believe, as do many others, that homosexuality is a sin. However, you could argue that no sin is greater than another is, and we are all sinners. Still, no matter what our beliefs, we are not to judge others. Some of the discrimination that homosexuals face is that law does not permit them to marry each other. Also, they are not allowed to enroll in the country's military. A gay couple, correspondingly, is not allowed to adopt a child, I think partly because people believe that the child should have both a father and a mother figure.

The fight for equality has come a long way since the 50's, but there are still factors such as discrimination, prejudice, sexism, and just closed mindedness that are preventing us from achieving true equality. Equality is important in society. All men were created equal and should be treated equally as well. Equality means fairness, balance, equivalence and evenness. These are all important in defining and forming relationships in all aspects of life and society. I hope that one day equality will truly exist and people will get opportunities and be treated fairly because of what they know, rather than their gender, race or sexual orientation.

In Hardin's Lifeboat Ethics he argues for a very harsh thesis. He claims that we should not offer any kind of assistance or support to people in poor countries because the outcome of doing so would simply be catastrophic. He uses a lifeboat example to show the segregation of the rich people in the lifeboat and the poor ones swimming in the water outside. Say fifty people occupy a lifeboat, which has room for ten more, but suppose there are a hundred others swimming outside begging for admission to the lifeboat. Hardin says that if we choose to be generous and take them all into the boat, making a total of one-hundred fifty in a boat designed for sixty, then the boat would be overloaded and everyone would drown. No positive result. The other solution is that we only let ten people in. But which ten do we choose? And is it really safe to let more people in? If we do let the other ten in the lifeboat, we would have lost our "safety factor." So in the end, there really is no positive outcome in helping the other hundred swimming in the sea. Either way the result would just be a disaster.

Hardin also points out as to why there is no advantage in helping the poor is the tragedy of the commons. A person's property or possession is well taken care of because it is his or her own responsibility and only he or she is responsible for what happens to it. But if it was available for everyone then it wouldn't be taken care of as much. There is also the case of some people claiming that their needs are greater and would then take more than other people. He says, "If everyone would restrain himself, all would be well; but it takes only one less than everyone to ruin a system of voluntary restraint." He uses air and water as examples of commons taken advantage of. Since air and water are treated as commons, they have now become polluted.

Another negative product of helping the poor is that they will never learn from their mistakes. Since the poor countries know that the wealthy ones will always be there to help and give them aid when needed, they will never learn to save themselves or to prepare for future disasters. Therefore, they will forever be dependent on foreign aid to pull them up in times of need.

The last argument is whether we should help the poor countries and have them forever depend on us, or not help them and let them learn their lesson so that hopefully it will benefit them in the future. I don't agree that we shouldn't help the poor countries just because we think it will mean we will have to take care of them forever. Some countries are not as economically fortunate as the United States. Since we are a rich country why should we be greedy and take all the fortune? We should share and help the others who are not as fortunate as us instead of giving them a selfish attitude. Everything we have is from God so why should we let other countries suffer when we know we can help. By giving aid, we are giving them a second chance so that they will learn their lesson and hopefully that aid will help them get out of their rut.

Custom Essays on Lifeboat Ethics

People are naturally careless and selfish when tragedy occurs. When people receive aid, they end up depending on you as long as they can. Therefore, they do not deserve to be helped because they do not know discipline and gratitude.

This basin is so rich with specimens of such continuity and duration that paleontologists, sedimentologists, paleobotanists, and biostratigraphers can test theories against fossil records. This research paper will illustrate through geological time and uniformitarianism the importance of the "John Day Fossil Bed". An appreciation of the immensity of geologic time is central to understanding the evolution of Earth and its survival.

This article has broken down the "John Day Fossil Bed's" into four geological time and uniformitarianism formations The Clarno Formation (50-5 mya) uniformitarianism is a tropical to subtropical forests mantle. The fossil records in sedimentary rock displayed "splendid samples of seeds, nuts, fruits, leaves, branches, and roots". Many of these samples were new discoveries to science. The mammals of this period were large and to name a few are the "browsing brontotheres and amynodonts. The John Day Formation (7-0 mya) uniformitarianism deciduous forests replaced the earlier subtropical forests of the Clarno formation showing a vast biological diversity of species of the early "Miocene epoch". "More that one hundred groups of mammals have been found in this formation as well, including dogs, cats, swine, oreodonts, horses, camels, rhinos, and rodents". To help support the geological time of this period volcanic ash was located throughout the fossil bed, giving way to accurate "radiometric" dates. The Mascall Formation (15-1 mya) uniformitarianism was created after the massive volcano activity and the weathering of lava into "highly fertile soils, and from these soils arose lush, nutritious grasses and mixed hardwood forest, mush like those found today in the eastern United States". A great variety of animals like horses, camels, and deer are discovered in the sedimentary rock. Also, large mammals reappeared like the "gomphotheres (early elephants), as well as sizable rhinos and bear-dogs. The Rattlesnake Formation (8-6 mya) uniformitarianism that is named for Rattlesnake Creek, completes the paleontological story of the "John Day Basin", and based on geological time is very early. Some of the species resembles those of today, and others of a distant past. The type of animal that grazed the land suggests a much "dryer and cooler climate, dominated by grasslands. These strata represent the last major episode of deposition in the basin".

With the discovery of the "John Day Fossil Bed", the "paleontologists can detect subtle shifts in the ecosystems through time. Sedimentologists are able to map the orientation of bones in a Clarno Formation quarry, and thereby plot the eddies, backwaters, and gravel bars of a river that flowed thirty-seven million years ago. Paleobotantists determine the rate at which plant communities evolved. A biostratigrapher dates the last known occurrence of a fossil primate in North America".

Man's ability to study the past ensures mankind a better chance to survive in the future.

John Steinbeck

On February 7, 10, John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California.

He was the third of four children and the only son of John Ernst II and Olive

Hamilton Steinbeck. He spent his childhood and adolescence in the Salina

Valley, later called the salad bowl of the nation. He attended Salinas High

School. He attended classes at Stanford University leaving without a degree.

During these years Steinbeck dropped out for several months, and his job

experiences include sales clerk, farm laborer, ranch hand, and factory

worker. In November of 15, he traveled by freighter from Los Angeles to New

York City where he worked as a construction laborer and, briefly, for the New

York American. From 16-18 he lived in Lake Tahoe, California and worked

as a caretaker for a summer home.

In October of 10, he met Edward F. Ricketts, a marine biologist,

philosopher and longtime friend. Then in 15 after the first popular success,

novel Tortilla Flat he began a lifelong friendship with the editor Pascal Covici.

Covici became an editor after the bankruptcy of his own firm.

I am putting all of his marriages in this essay because I think they had to

do with his outlook on life. My outlook would be affected if I went through what

he did. First, in 10, he married Carol Henning. In 141 he seperated from

Carol in the spring and that same fall he moved to New York with singer

Gwyndolyn Conger. In 14 he was sued for divorce by Carol. One year later

and three years after he had moved in with Gwyndolyn Conger they were finally

married. He then had two sons two years apart, Thom and John IV. 148 was a

disappointing year for Steinbeck. Ricketts was killed in an automobile

accident.and then Gwyndolyn divorced him. In 150 he married his third wife

Elaine Anderson Scott.

Tortilla Flat was his first popular success. Mice of Men was published in

15 and was made into two films. The first was released in 140 and the

second was released in 1 and Gary Senise directed and starred with John

Malkovich. It was also made into a play in New York that had 07

performances. The Grapes of Wrath was his greatest critical success, published

by Viking, provoked both great and popular acclaim and violent political

condemnation for its depiction of Oklahoma migrants and California growers, as

well as for its alleged vulgar language and social bias. It won him the Nobel

Peace Prize for Literature. He was elected into American Academy of Arts and

Letters. East of Eden was also a major work. Heres something of interest,

Oprah Winfrey had East of Eden in her book club. The famous Rodgers and

Hammerstein created a musical called Pipe Dream that was based on Sweet

Thursday. He recieved the New York Drama Critics Award for the play Of Mice

and Men. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

He died of arteriosclerosis in New York in 168. Eleven years later the

U.S. commemorative stamp was issued on what would have been his 77th

birthday. Steinbeck was also pictured on a half-ounce gold medal issued by the

U.S. government. In 11, Frank Gallatis Steppenwolf Theater dramatization of

The Grapes of Wrath won New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best play of

the season.

Steinbeck was influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson who believed in

transcendentalism, and Ernest Hemingway.

"Coming of Age", one more time

In the novel "Hatchet" written by Gary Paulsen many literary elements are shown. This is yet another, "coming of age" story we find so frequently in children's literature. Gary Paulsen uses a very descriptive technique when writing about Brian's days in the wilderness. Also, the heroic quest journey is somewhat portrayed. Brian, being a young kid is thrown into a life-threatening event in the first chapter of the book. He has to survive in the wilderness with only a hatchet and his instincts.

To survive Brian has to learn from his mistakes and rely on nature. He has to fend for himself which encompasses him not to think of his parents divorce. Out of all the tasks Brian must perform, this was the hardest. He is an emotional wreck due to the status of his parents and what he knows, "The Secret", about his mother. However, in order for him to survive, he must not dwell upon his family situation. If he was to rack his brain constantly thinking about the divorce, he would loose his focus and inhibitions to survive the wilderness. Gary Paulsen uses this "coming of age" theme for the book, which goes hand in hand with the heroic quest. Brian's quest is to survive.

By surviving Brian learns there is a lot more to life then his parents divorce, and that life will go on. He comes out of the wilderness a stronger person and more mature. We are shown this in the end of the novel by Brian choosing not to share with his mom that he knows the secret. It doesn't matter to Brian anymore about the secret. This is a big step towards maturity for Brian, he realizes the secret is not important anymore, and it will probably make matters worse.

The "coming of age" theme which we see so often in children's literature serves a lot of value. It's a channel way to teach kids the lesson of growing up by using example. It lets children relate to something concrete they have read in a book before. Also, by letting children relate, it helps adults place an emphasis on maturity.

Symbolism is another literary element used by Gary Paulsen. Water, which is a universal symbol, stands for life. The lake Brian lands in is the symbol for water representing life. Brian knew he had to land in the lake to live. Also, the lake serves as a source of food for Brian, which he needs to survive. Secondly, the fool birds are a symbol in the novel. When Brian first survives the landing he can not find the birds. They are right there the whole entire time yet, he doesn't see them. The mind frame Brian is in at this time is what prevents him from seeing the birds. By the time Brian can see the birds he has matured and has experienced the "coming of age". He starts to see things differently, and not only till then does he see the birds, which were so visible.

In conclusion, this novel serves for many purposes. Gary Paulsen represents the theme very well, while adding other literary elements. The "coming of age" theme he has used in written in a different manor then most children's books. His main thesis is put on survival, while relating it to a child dealing with divorce. It teaches children that there are many aspects of life and not to dwell upon things. Using symbolism, we can see how the mind set of Brian has changed by the end of the novel. By intertwining this use of symbolism and the "coming of age" theme, a great novel is produced.

Arthur Miller's " Death of A Salesman" could be described as a study in the American Dream ideology, a system that at times is indescribably brutal and at other times compassionates. Author Millers plays are usually associated with real life issues filled with failure and disappointment. The authors main character, Willy Loman, is a traveling salesman that spends his whole lifetime trying to find success based on looks and popularity. Willy Loman is a product of this ever-increasing society, obsessed with measuring success by popularity and material wealth and unfortunately emphasizing these principles upon his family. For Willy Loman, to be liked was the definitive criterion of life success. The American dream of wealth and luck became Willy's dream, and it almost became reality.

Willy realizes that in fact he has lived his life in vain, never achieving nor succeeding but remaining a shadow of his ambition. It is this sudden insight that urges him into a fantasy, afraid to face the future. It is only through Willy's failure as a salesman that his innate desire for the outdoors is exposed. At the end of the play, Charley mentions, "… He was a happy man with a batch of cement … so wonderful with his hands … he had the wrong dreams, all wrong.". It has been often said that the play emphasize the path not taken may have been the right one, still Willy holds the inability to see who and what he is.

Miller has created Willy's wife Linda in such a way, that it is difficult to confirm whether she is a positive or destructive force upon him. It is hard to understand why she allows this deception to rise to the level that it does. The love Linda holds for Willy is relentless. She sees herself as his protector, allowing him to laps into his illusions where he feels contentment. But in her love for her husband she is ironically his destroyer. Linda in her admiration for Willy also accepts his dream, which turns out fatal. She allows him to kill himself never letting on that she knows about the attempted suicides.

The character most harmfully affected by Willy's pursuit of the "Great American Dream" is his eldest son Biff. Similarly, they are both impractical, one by the consequences of disillusionment, the other by illusions themselves. Still looking for his purpose in life, Biff persists, due to Willy. While still in high school Biff's future was assured, and was tremendously well liked, but it all came down soon afterwards "just because he printed University of Virginia on his sneakers doesn't mean their going to graduate him!" Discovering his father shattered the vision he held of him. Biff, paralyzed by reality comes to the realization that in fact there is more to life than being well liked and football. Now after searching, Biff comes to terms with exactly who and what he is "… I stopped in the middle of that building and I saw the sky. I saw the things I love in this world … and I looked at the pen and said to myself, what the hell am I grabbing this for? Why am I trying to become what I don't want to be…I am not a leader of men … Pop I'm a dime a dozen, and so are you."

In the book A Lesson Before Dying there are many instances were people's self-identity has changed because of racism. Many people put down the blacks especially the whites, which makes them think that their not as good as the white people in the town. They are very much treated like they (the blacks) are not a part of the white people's life and don't deserve to be there.

One of the main people who were affected by the racism is Grant. Grant has never felt that he belongs in his community because he is a black man. Henry Pichot and Sheriff Guidry helps Grant feel this way. Because both these men are whites and well respected they seem to believe it's acceptable to put people down to make them feel like nothing. Pichot especially does this to Grant when Grant goes and meets him at his house. Pichot makes Grant feel worst then what he already does when Grant doesnt use his proper manner and say Sir after every sentence. Pichot would never call Grant Sir and it seems that Grant thinks if Pichot doesn't have respect for him why should he have respect for him. Then after Grant had finished talking to Pichot he didn't say it as such but he wanted Grant to look away from him after he had finished talking, so Grant did.

Not only did Pichot make Grant feel like nothing but he did the same thing to Miss Emma. Miss Emma went to Pichot house for some help, and although he did help her in the long run, she had to try and convince him to help her by telling him how much she has done for his family over the years. He knew that she had been the maid at his home for many years and that although he didn't owe her anything because she was black and he was white he did anyhow.

Jefferson was also apart of this racism that affects his self-identity. Jefferson didn't get a fair hearing at all and we know this. He was put up for murder in front of a jury, which was full of white men. His own defence called him a hog, if this was a white man in front of this jury up on this charge they would have never called him a hog in front of his family. It was because he was black and was not well educated that they feel the right to be able to treat them like animals. A white man would have got a fair hearing and would have got a defence that actually believes what he said.

Help with essay on A Lesson Before Dying

Vivian was also apart of this racism that caused so many people to change their views on themselves. Vivian was not a black women nor was she a white women she was a half-cast. In those days people who were half-casts were respected much more than people who were completely black and I believe this comes out when in the pub. Although Grant was not put down whilst in the pub it was obvious that Vivian was much more comfortable in the town that the pub was in.

In conclusion people back in those days were very racist, toward those of different colours. Although the whites were sometimes frowned upon it was mostly the blacks that people had a problem with. Whether it is because of their colour or because people believed that the blacks were the whites slaves they treated them like they thought. They didn't have any respect for the blacks as you can see with what happen to Jefferson, Grant and Miss Emma. Especially Pichot, he treated them like he wanted to not how he should which unfortunately was very racist.

Rodney Mullen, the king of freestyle, knew what he wanted to do from day one. He wanted to be a skateboarder. Although, this wasnt going to be easy because he was the son of a Doctor. His dad was completely against skateboarding and forbid any idea of him doing it, but Rodney was persistant.

Rodney got his first skateboard on New Years day, 177. After much begging and pleading he had finally gotten a skateboard. Although, he had some rules and conditions he had to follow. If he was ever injured or caught skating without his pads he had to stop skating then and there. He reluctantly made the deal and did what he had to do to get that skateboard. Rodney ran as fast as his little legs could carry him straight to the local shopping mall and picked out a black Bonsai aluminum skateboard with Precision wheels and ACS trucks. He soon found out that his dad had nothing to worry about as he began practicing and learning frestyle tricks.

He started getting very good and recieved his first sponsership after only nine months, The Inland Surf Shop. He then started competing in local Florda competitions and he won his first contest. He blew many of the California pros away when he placed fourth in the Kona contest. Rodney continued on and took the top spot at the Oceanside contest in California and got another sponsership, Walker. His father tried to get him to switch over to another sport seeing as he had proven best at skateboarding. Rodney Mullen was definitely not going to stop his beloved sport just because he was good at it. That idea was tossed out the window. Dads have more power than sons though, so in know that he might have to quit soon he worked harder and harder on learning new tricks and becoming better. He invented three tricks within his first three years of skating.

Rodney recieved a call from Stacy Peralta inviting him to enter a contest in Sand Diego. This was supposed to be his last contest it was the day after his thirteenth birthday and he would be competing with top Sims freestyler Steve Rocco. The contest was very close but Rodney came out on top! He and Steve later became good friends. After winning the contest he recieved another sponsership from Powell-Peralta, one of the biggest and most well known teams of the decade. His skateboarding took a huge leap from there. His career jump started and he started getting publicity. More and more contest came up and Rodney knocked em down. He dominated the freestyle contest for an entire decade. The 80s decade was called the Mullen decade by skateboarder magazine. In all of Mullens years of competing he only came in second place once. He was crowned World Freestyle Champion 5 times over.

Help with essay on Rodney Mullen

Apart from all the competitions Rodney invtented over 0 new tricks throughout that time and many of these tricks on the basis for modern day skateboarding. When the 0s kicked around freestyle died out and street skating begun. Mullen quickly adapted and is still today one of the greatest skaters of all time. He was just recently voted Skater of the Year in Skateboarder Magazine, 00.

Rodney Mullen is one of the most intuitive and creative skateboarders of all time and his skills cannot be matched by any other skateboarder today. He has provided a legacy to skateboarding and in general the man just has it. He lives it. He breathes it. He is skateboarding.

An Introduction To The Life Of Tupac Shakur

A subject that I find very interesting is "The Life Of Tupac Shakur" this is because he was brought up in a poor family with no money and made himself one of the most popular rappers of all time. I am also very interested because very little is known about the rapper's death. Gangster rap star Tupac (pac) Amura Shakur was born in Brooklyn, New York in 171 to a poor mother and father.

Tupac never knew his father because he disappeared when he was very young. With a struggle Tupac's mother, Mutula Shakur, brought him up in Baltimore where as a teenager he attended the Baltimore School for the Performing Arts.

Custom writing service can write essays on Introduction To The Life Of Tupac Shakur

Tupac's family later relocated to Oakland, California where he spent much of his time on the street before hooking up with the rap group Digital Underground in the early 10s as a dancer and later a guest rapper.

In 1 Tupac released his solo debut album, "Pacalypse Now," which soon sold over 5 hundred thousand copies thanks to the hit singles "Trapped" and "Brenda's Got A Baby," as well as a high profile appearance by Tupac himself in the hit movie "Juice."

His 1 follow-up, "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z." reached number one and quickly sold over 1 million copies. This album produced the top ten hits "I Get Around" and "Keep Your Head Up." That same year Tupac co-starred in the popular movie "Poetic Justice," which further increased his celebrity.

Throughout 1 and 14 Shakur was in and out of jail on various charges, despite the fact that he had no criminal record before becoming a rapper; he was also injured after being shot, allegedly by robbers while visiting New York City.

Despite losing a case and being sentenced to prison, Tupac was thrilled that his 15 follow up "Me Against The World," debuted at number one establishing him as one of the most popular rappers of the 10s.

Within a year he was paroled and signed to "Death Row Records," for whom he recorded his best-selling effort to date.

16's "All Eyes On Me," was a double album that sold more than six million copies. In time, Tupac began concentrating more on acting than on rapping, starring in the films "Bullet" and "Grindlock'd."

In September 16 Tupac was shot by unknown assailants while driving in a car in Las Vegas. He died of respiratory failure and cardiopulmonary arrest six days later in a hospital without even regaining consciousness.

Though his death brought renewed attention to inner city violence, corruption in the rap music industry and East Coast West Coast rap feuds; remarkably little is known about it. His shooting remains a mystery; its motive the subject of much speculation by fans and industry insiders.

Ironically, Shakur's death and the circumstances surrounding it only seemed to fuel his mystique. From greatest hits compilations to collections of previously unheard material to tribute records, there has been no shortage of "new" Tupac Shakur releases since 16. The most recent of which is "Better Dayz" Which was released in 00.

Please note that this sample paper on Introduction To The Life Of Tupac Shakur is for your review only. Satirical works are one in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit. Many writers like to use this to get their messages across in a not so straight forward mannerism. Satire is supposed to make you think, and analyze. Sometimes interpretation seems almost too easy, but then you dig deeper and retrieve its true roots. Satire always has a specific target, or point, it tries to get across to the reader.

One such satirical work is the infamous "The Emperor's New Clothes". It is a Horatian work which involves two swindlers pretending to create a new outfit for the emperor. The material used can only be seen by worthy folks, who are smart enough to see it of course this is far from the truth. The satirical target for this is the individuals' position in the group. People by nature, yearn for acceptance and approval in a society, and would do or say almost anything to keep it that way. One does not want to feel inferior to the others, and therefore shows a voracious desire for praise and conformity. Ironically, this hasn't changed much from past, to present, to future in civilizations worldwide. The Chamberlain, the emperor's high ranking official that he sent to check out the new clothing as it was being prepared was shocked to not see it, but he kept it to himself, in fear that he would be frowned upon.

"Inflexible Logic" is another satirical piece open for analysis. Although also Horatian, it is a bit different than the previous story. This one requires a little more thought and effort in interpretation. At a party, a professor told Mr. Bainbridge about a mathematical theory in which he strongly believed. This was that if six chimpanzees were set in a room, each with a typewriter, and began pounding away randomly at the keyboard, they would in time recreate every literary work ever made. Although this may seem a little hard to believe, it is statistically accurate. Mr. Bainbridge pondered it for a while, then put it to the test. He himself had acquired six chimpanzees and utilized them suite. These chimpanzees produced no gibberish though, only pure recreated, and naturally accidental art. Of course, this work is vastly exaggerated, and not to be taken completely serious. Ironically, when the professor saw this, he was shocked, and in denial. Although it was his own theory he thought it to be statistically inaccurate, and out of pure confusion and emotion, killed the chimpanzees and Mr. Bainbridge, only to die himself soon after. The target here is none other than people believing in something only partially. These people are otherwise known as hypocrites.

Satire, if interpreted correctly, can be a very intellectual and thought provoking activity. It raises many good points, and is quite interesting at the same time. Instead of being straight forward and open-ended, it is left open for analysis however the reader sees fit. The intelligent reader can have highly philosophical internal battle after reading a work of such amplitude.

Jefferson was an Aristocrat; he was a strong believer of the enlightment. He believed in the power of reason. Jefferson thought that farmers are the idealistic man, they worked hard, and can prosper. He believed that there should be a public education system, and even those who are not able to support to pay for the school may have a chance to get a good education. One thing he did not believe in was blacks and whites equality, but by all means against slavery. Jefferson was a politician, he has his personal goals. The main reasons he ran for presidency, to reduce the size and cost of federal government, to repeal federalist legislation and to maintain international peace. He has never vetoed a single act of congress. In order to reduce the size of the fleet, he promoted peace. He was very suspicious of standing armies. He has created the Army corps of engineers and the military academy at west point to make sure that the citizen¡¦s soldiers would receive professional leadership in battle. Jefferson doubled the size of the U.S. by the Louisiana Purchase. He sent Lewis and Clark on the expedition towards the far west to explore to see what secrets and hidden in the new lands. Jefferson ended his first term with very much popular support due to that he had maintained the peace, reduced the taxes, and expanded the boundaries. Jeffersons beliefs about religion were that religious faith was a personal experience between a man and God. It was not an issue to be talked upon before others. Jefferson never talked about his own religious experience, even to those closest to him. He believed that each and every man are born natural moral instincts and that religions only differ in traditions and they¡¦re Gods. Jefferson considered Jesus to be the greatest moralist in history. For Jefferson Christianity was the right religion, it can lead each man to fulfill his duties to other men. He believed that mans natural goodness and the unity of God. Jefferson created a government with multiple sources of sovereignty. He believed in making a prosperous nation in which independent citizens can pursue their own economic interests.

Jefferson was one of the leaders who support the constitution, as the first amendment states that all men are created equal. He contradicts himself by not believing blacks equal whites. He was also against slavery, he believed it was totally wrong, but he had many slaves, even though he freed a few house slaves, he still owned many. Jefferson believed in peace and nonviolence, but at times he would rather see the federalists disliked and hated by the population in order for him to have his popular support. In order to accomplish his goals he did not show the federalists any mercy and kept their power very limited. One of Jefferson mistakes was when France and Great Britain fought for supremacy on land and the sea. Both didn¡¦t want each other to get their resources, and American ships were sunk. Jefferson thought that by suspending trade with both the nations they would both come with a peace agreement. It did not work the way he imagined it, some Americans still smuggled goods and in order to regulated the coastal trade, the government needed to have an established police state to make it possible. Jefferson made many mistakes, which just means he is human, but the accomplishments he was able to bring to the U.S. was at a level very few can match, the contradictions were sometimes inevitable. dont have one

The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury can be compared to the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The main character in Bradbury's novel, Guy Montag, has many similarities to Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird. Both of these men risk their lives to stand up for what they believe in. They both go against the normal beliefs of society, and think for themselves. Although the overall themes of these books are very different, they both center on the general beliefs of the public, and their inability to see things for what they truly are. In Harper Lee's novel, the public do not see that their racism is wrong, because they were taught to believe that African Americans are inferior to whites. The people in Fahrenheit 451 do not see that books are good for their souls, because they were taught to believe that they should all think alike, instead of having books to spark debate, or to influence their minds.

First, Guy Montag is a fireman who starts fires instead of putting them out. The society in which he lives focuses on the burning of books to avoid conflicting opinions. They do not read books, think on their own, or go outside and enjoy nature. Instead, they spend their time watching TV, and listening to the radio. After Montag meets Clarisse, he realizes how empty his life is, and he recognizes the faults of his society. When he becomes curious of the books which he is supposed to be burning, he finds himself risking everything he has to find out more. Atticus Finch lives in a southern community of racist people. Although he himself is not racist, he finds himself trying to deter his children from the faults of their town. He is a lawyer who is representing a black man in a rape trial. He risks his life to stand up for what is right, and sets a good example for his children. Even though he proves the man is innocent, he loses his case because some of the other people in his town still have racism in their minds. Both of these men put their lives at risk to stand up for what is just.

In addition to the similarities of the two characters in these novels, the books' themes in general can be easily compared. In both of these novels, the public refuses to see what they have not been taught to see. If they do not wish to see what they believe is wrong, then they shall not see it at all. Although Bradbury's book deals with censorship, and Lee's novel is more focused on racism, the books are alike because they deal with issues that effect our lives every day. People, who are taught to think a certain way, will have a difficult time thinking otherwise.

In conclusion, the novel Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, can be compared to the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. Both of these novels, like Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, deal with the fact that people are unwilling to see what they do not wish to see. They ignore their own faults because they do not feel that they are ever wrong. The characters Guy Montag and Atticus Finch both stand up for what is right, even if it is risking all they have worked for, and even if it is risking their lives.
