I went and listened to Dr. Beth Daugherty speak on America's war with Iraq last Thursday. The main issue with the situation in northern Iraq deals with the countries northern neighbor, Turkey. Mostly Turkmen and Curtish currently populate Northern Iraq. Turkey is worried about the outcome of Northern Iraq because they could loose control of the region after the war. One problem that we have in this area is that there are not many US troops there right now. The US is waiting to see if the Turkey military will intervene before they send more troops to this region.


The next issue that Dr. Daugherty discussed was the current situation in Southern Iraq. This region is very important since it is where most of our troops are traveling through. The Shea's currently populates this area. They make up about 55 to 60 percent of Iraq's population. The Shea's are predominately an anti-Sadam group, which will most likely ultimately be good for the US. The problem lies in a Shea revolt many years ago in which we betrayed this group. The Shea's have not forgotten this incident and many of them blame the US for their deprivations over the past ten years. The Shea's also view the US and British troops as unwelcome intruders. Another problem in southern Iraq is that the US troops are complaining that they are having to play the role of peacekeepers between different religious groups in Iraq, which is not what they were sent over there to do.

Tragic heroes from Greek tragedies almost always share similar characteristics.

Agamemnon display and share traits common to a tragic hero. They both have a

Both Medea and Clytemnestra had detrimental flaws. Medea was a very


passionate women with a tendency to become easily angered. Her anger from being

their shattered palace/For the wrong they have declared to do..."(Euripides 6).


Clytemnestras flaw was that she could not see past her own grief, anger, and how her


husband had killed their daughter. Her anger and grief are displayed by her emotional


words, "Like a swan she wailed her last call for her loved one while she


drowned."(Aeschylus). Both of their flaws were indeed tragic, but more to others than


themselves.


Almost all characters from Greek tragedies have some sort of rank or ability,


Medea and Clytemnestra were no exception. Medea was not only a sorceress, but also a


respected citizen. Medea's magic skills are portrayed in the play when she makes a


magical powder that is meant to kill the king daughter. Clytemnestra has no special


ability per say, but she had ruled Argos for ten years in her husbands absence. These


characters ranks and abilities were part of their conflict.


Medea and Clytemnestra both seek revenge for wrongs done to them by thier


husbands. Medea trys to make Jason's life as miserable as possible for everything he did


to her. She kills the most important to him including his new wife and her father. She


even goes as far as to kill her own children to punish him. Her plan of revenge is laid out


as she says, "...I shall make corpses of three of my enemies, father and daughter, and my


own husband."(Euripides 1). Clytemnestra seeks revenge on her husband because he


murdered their daughter as well as took a new wife. Clytemnestra's revenge is very


secretive because she hopes to surprise her husband and catch him off guard. She


explains to Agamemnon the reason for her revenge, "For thy child's absence then/Such


mine excuse, no wily afterthought...No drop is left to shed."(Aeschylus 0). Their


vengeance lost its sweetness when it led to their own pain and suffering as well as their


victims.


After getting their revenge Medea and Clytemnestra become miserable and lead


to their own downfalls and the suffering of others. Medea's life becomes miserable after


she kills her own children and when she realizes she will never know love again. She is


also devastated after being exiled from her home city. Her pain and suffering are made


known when she says, "But I.....but this is an unexpected blow which has befallen me and


has broken my heart."(Euripides). Clytemnestra does not suffer herself in this play but


will later be killed by her son in a later play. Until then she is responsible of causing the


city and her son to suffer immensely.


These two characters are perfect examples of tragic heroes and their traits. Not


only are Medea and Clytemnestra perfect examples, but they are some of the best and


easily seen examples. They follow every step that is found in most Greek tragedies to


cause some sort of conflict and create the drama.

In Crane's "A Mystery of Heroism," the search of what is a hero is explored. During the course of the story, Collins, a union war solider in the Civil War, desires a drink of well water located across an active battlefield. Going against all his inhibitions and judgments, and going along with peer pressure, Collins decides to make the suicidal trip. Remarkably, he gathers himself together because he knows that he has to come back a "victor". When Collins begins his expedition, he feels as if he is out of place. He believes that he has no right being out in the middle of the battlefield. He finds it hard to believe that he got himself into this situation, but knows that he can not back out now.


This leads to the beginning of the selected passage. At this point Collins is wondering why he does not "feel some keen agony of fear cutting his sense like a knife." In this situation most people would begin to feel a sense of fear, as if they were about to die. But Collins, on the other hand, is not having these feelings, and it concerns him. He wonders this because "human expression had said loudly for centuries that men should feel afraid of certain things and that all men who did not feel this fear were phenomena, heroes". He does not see himself being able to placed in that caliber of man, a hero. He does not think that he is qualified for that title. Does running across a battlefield for a drink of water put him in the category of being courageous.


Fred Collins evaluates his life at this point to disprove the title he loosely put upon himself "No, it could not be true. He was not a hero. Heroes had no shames in their lives". Collins believes that he could not be a hero because he is not free of fault. For one to be considered a hero in his eyes, you can not be selfish, you would need to be genuinely good. Which he believes he is not. In his eyes he is full of fault and not genuinely good.

acheiving isolationism. As shown in Document A, everything that is significant to the people of


the U.S. "shall be submitted to a tribunal created other than by our own people" and will take


away their own decisions as a government. Because many saw this as a threat to our society,


many objected to Wilson's League of Nations. The League of Nations did "much to intensify


and nothing to heal the old and ugly dissensions"(Document B), and everyone except Wilson


saw that. Because Wilson had no support of his League of Nations, and no one on his side, he


was overpowered by the majority of Congress who opposed the league. Just like DuBois says in


Document H, "America was not represented," therefore the American people were not


supportive of Wilson and his ideas. However, though Wilson's opposition was strong, his


stubborness also contributed to the Senate's defeat of the treaty.


Wilson's inappropriate stubborness also led to the Senate disapproval of the treaty,


mainly because he would not compromise with them on Article 10. Because Wilson gave the


Senate a "my way or no way at all" approach, the Senate therefore chose no way at all. Wilson's


stubborness about Article 10 proved to be worthless, because under all conditions, the Senate has


complete control over what goes and what doesn't, as seen in Document E. Had Wilson been


willing to negociate over the treaty, he would have been able to meet an understanding with the


Senate. In Document G, when Wilson asks if Americans "want [their] country's honor


vindicated and the Treaty ratified?" he is telling them that the only way for Americans to have


homage is for them to support the League of Nations. His 8,000 mile tour and even his stroke


during his ratification debate showed his stubborness, and didn't allow for the Senate to make


their provisions on Article 10. Since the Senate has so much power, if they cannot put their own


provisions in on something, then no one can. Wilson's foolish stubborness amounted to nothing


but his death, and because of that he was unable to get the treaty with only his provisions ratified


by the Senate.


Not only after World War One did the League of Nations receive no support, but even


today, the United Nations plays little if no role in American affairs. Americans want to be in


control of what they do, and do not want to be forced to do things against their will. President


Bush has decided that America does not need approval from anyone, and that we must take


matters into our own hands. Like the League of Nations then, the United Nations today receive


no American approval.

Lucas is a bored, gullible and foolish boy who unscrupulously allows himself to become emtowiled in events through the story. Strangely in the two major events, which dominate the story, it is Benoit, not Lucas or Alex, who is the more scheming character. Benoit always thinks ahead. He fixes Lucas' chainsaw and soon asks Lucas to cut down the tree for him in return. Benoit also thinks ahead before talking to Lucas as is apparent when Lucas says that the tree is on private property and Benoit stays clam 'I realised he had prepared thoroughly for this conversation. He had foreseen my objections.'(p166) When Lucas tries to get out of cutting the tree, Benoit keeps on urging Lucas 'They fix my chainsaw for me and when they ask me for something, I tell them to get lost'. (p168)


Throughout the story Lucas is described and seen as a bored, gullible and foolish boy. The two major events, the cutting down of the tree and the Molotov cocktail events show that he is easily lead. Lucas also shows been taken advantage of easily as in the case when the police come to see what the Arabs had stolen and he did not tell them that it was he who took the saw out and cut through the middle of the bench.

Alex is given to violence, a trait he does not depend upon others to acquire. 'I am not so fond of guns. The knife is what I prefer.' (p17) Most of the time Alex wants to be led; however, there are about two instances where Alex does play a leading role. He talks Lucas into joining the 'Club' of which he and Lucas are secret members. On another occasion Alex again prevails upon Benoit when he desperately wanted to return to the scene of the cut tree, but Benoit declined. However, Alex was persistent enough to make Benoit succumb and they returned to survey the damage.


Benoit is fully aware that he can ask Alex to do almost anything and he even goes out of his way to protect Alex from being accused of all the wrongdoings in the story. Benoit has a motive here; he has not finished with Alex. He obviously is keen to 'use' Alex in his future schemes.


This discussion, therefore, shows that the strongest or the most forceful character in the story is not Lucas, not Alex, but Benoit. From a feminist point of view Jane Eyre is a confusing novel! On a given page one may think that Jane has a seemingly weak character, but on another page one would want to sympathize with her, or want to help her. Jane Eyre can be easily seen as an antifeminist novel. There are many characters and events in the story that would force one to believe that this novel is not feminist. One of the most obvious reasons would be the characters that Jane looks up to.

Charlotte Bronte imagined a world where the husband treated his wife with respect and thought of her as his equal. When Jane and Rochester fall in love she makes it clear to him that she will not be walked all over, and wouldnt stay in his shadow. Unfortunately, Jane finds out about Bertha and sees how overpowering Rochester can be. This causes her not to want to marry him, and then she had no one to turn to.


At that point in Janes life she knew that she couldnt marry Rochester, because she did not want to be the next Bertha. Jane knew that she had to establish herself as an independent woman before she could consider marrying Rochester.


There are many events in Jane Eyre that show that Rochester needs Jane in his life. That shows that if Rochester is capable of needing Jane then he would be ready to treat her as an equal. That was shown when Jane pulled him out of his bed fire. Had Jane not been there, who knows what would have happened, therefore showing that Rochester needed Jane.


When Jane returns to Rochesters and learns that Bertha is and he is blind she goes to find him and realizes that she is capable of being his equal. For the first time he realizes that he truely needs Jane, and she feels truely needed. She decided to follow her heart and marry him for love, not money or status.


Although Jane Eyre wasnt written during a time when women were seen as equals, it is a feminist novel. It should be labeled as feminist because when it was published Charlotte didnt want to give away that she was a woman, because she knew that it wouldnt have been published. It would have lost readers if the novel had been seen as purely feminist. Another reason that Jane Eyre is a feminist novel is that it was hard for Charlotte to make strong independent characters, because she herself wasnt able to be independent. Even though Jane Eyre is not often viewed as a purley feminist novel...it is, and Charlotte Bronte did an amazing job creating a world where women were equal to men even though in the real world it wasnt possible.

He distributed ownership of land to the peasants and abolished private ownership. He signed a treaty of Brest-Litovsk that was humiliating but thought it would bring peace to Russia. He tried to run Russia the way the peasants or proletarians thought it should be run.


However, towards the end of the book Frank Reilley becomes more like Joseph Stalin. As the Butterfly revolution ameliorated Frank began to render fear into the campers, due to the number of people that had been entitled counterrevolutionary. Campers who had been close to Frank Reilley were thrown into the Brig because of acts that could have been interpreted as counterrevolutionary. This revolution that had once been peaceful had now become violent with executions. Not only were campers not able to do what they wanted, which was the whole purpose of the revolution, they had to follow orders and rules that could have violent consequences. Reilley's dictatorship was like the camp before the revolution but worse. Joseph Stalin's rule over Russia was similar. His repressive ways struck terror into the lives of many Soviet countries. He conducted political purges in the 10's, executing many high-ranked Bolsheviks for treason. Stalin also had his secret police eliminate elements of the population that could be disloyal if war broke out. His rule was not only repressive like the Czar's but also more violent.

The novel that I choose to critique is Passage to Dawn. It was written by R.A. Salvatore. In this paper I will tell you a few things about this novel, Passage to Dawn. A few things I will tell you include main characters, plot, setting, and theme.


In Passage to Dawn the two main characters, Drizzt Do'Orden and Catti-brie Battlehammer, for six years have been sailing along the coast of Waterdeep on a ship called the Sea Sprite, venture to a small island that few had seen, called Caerwich. There an old blind sorceress gave them a mysterious riddle. On their way back to Waterdeep the Sea Sprite is badly damaged in a storm. Harkle Harpel on of the wizards on the ship used a spell to try and get them into port, and transports them and the whole ship onto a lake surrounded by land. In a city on the edge of the lake lives a very powerful priest, which they seek help from. The priest helps to solve the riddle and take Drizzt and Catti-brie to Icewind Dale. Although an evil demon, a "baron", is somehow realest from a dimension called the Astral Plains. This "baron" hates Drizzt and wants nothing more than to kill him and wipe out the world. In the end Drizzt and the "baron" fight and with the help of a few friends Drizzt wins.


I believe despite the fact that magic and such was involved and all the odd races, such as elves and dwarfs, the story does seem like it is true. The characters personality wise, do seem very real. I also thought the story was very interesting. I found specific parts such as the fight between the "baron" and Drizzt a very exiting and interesting part. I also thought that the competition between the two wizards Harkle Harpel and Robilard very interesting and comical. Parts such as these kept my interest and made me not want to put the book down.


There are two main characters of this story, those being Drizzt Do'Orden and Catti-brie Battlehammer. Drizzt Do'Orden is a drow elf, and son to Zaknafein Do'Orden. Drizzt is a kind, and fairly understanding person. His dark skin made his heritage apparent, and because of the evil drow elves usually signified he was feared by many who did not know him or know of him.

Catti-brie is always at his side along with his 800 pound panther, Guenhwyvar. He also has many other friends that come in along the way to help.


I do agree with this theme. Drizzt always does have a friend by his side helping him along the way; they are always there, even if he really does not need them they are still there for comfort, support, and friendship.


I believe that Passage to Dawn was a good book; I felt that it was very interesting and exiting. At many points it was hard for me to put the book down and do something else if asked to do so or the need comes up. The book set a very energetic and suspenseful tone. The many small disputes kept the energy going, and you were always wondering what is going to happen next. The book was also exiting because there was always something going on that would catch your interest or at least spark it.

The "new" writer needs to keep tradition in mind always, making the writer "acutely conscious of his place in time" (p.406). While embracing this knowledge, the writer must understand that just as the past may be altered by the present, the present is also altered by the past, and this sets the writer up for many difficulties.


After laying the groundwork for his support of tradition, Eliot begins to delve into another significant idea of his, which is really the other half of the picture that Eliot is painting on tradition. If the concept of depersonalization were not considered or put into the picture, then Eliot's previous assertations on the importance and role of tradition for the "new" writer, would be meaningless. When following the path of tradition, the writer has discovered the roles of their past and present, but what really gets them to this point is what Eliot refers to as the "continual self-sacrifice, a continual extinction of personality"(p.407). The personal emotions of a poet do not matter; they are not going to leave a mark. Eliot believes that "poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality" (p.410). Following along with Eliot's want of focus on the poem, not the poet, he is saying that emphasis should not be placed upon the emotions or personality of the poet, but upon the emotions coming through in the poetry. At the very end of his essay, Eliot stitches it all together with the statement that "the emotion of art is impersonal. And the poet cannot reach this impersonality without surrendering himself wholly to the work to be done" (p.410).


As a part of the "new criticism" movement, Eliot has definitely helped to emphasize and make clear the notions of the poem as a whole, the depersonalization of the writer, and the notion of the text or poem being something complete, something that stands on its own, not depending upon a relation to the author's life or intent, or to their history. For me this was depressing because you wouldn't think someone could be that shameless in using a 8 year old kid as your slave and then faking to be his friend, Basie even tried to sell Jim but this didn't seem to affect Jim.


While Jim is in Longhua Camp it makes you think what you would do in Jim's place because some conflicts really get you thinking if you would do that if you had to live. I would find it hard to fake that someone is still alive when they are dead just in order to get food, but likes Jim's maturation in the mind you find ways of bypassing thoughts like this and just do what is necessary for staying alive.
