The novel that I choose to critique is Passage to Dawn. It was written by R.A. Salvatore. In this paper I will tell you a few things about this novel, Passage to Dawn. A few things I will tell you include main characters, plot, setting, and theme.

In Passage to Dawn the two main characters, Drizzt Do'Orden and Catti-brie Battlehammer, for six years have been sailing along the coast of Waterdeep on a ship called the Sea Sprite, venture to a small island that few had seen, called Caerwich. There an old blind sorceress gave them a mysterious riddle. On their way back to Waterdeep the Sea Sprite is badly damaged in a storm. Harkle Harpel on of the wizards on the ship used a spell to try and get them into port, and transports them and the whole ship onto a lake surrounded by land. In a city on the edge of the lake lives a very powerful priest, which they seek help from. The priest helps to solve the riddle and take Drizzt and Catti-brie to Icewind Dale. Although an evil demon, a "baron", is somehow realest from a dimension called the Astral Plains. This "baron" hates Drizzt and wants nothing more than to kill him and wipe out the world. In the end Drizzt and the "baron" fight and with the help of a few friends Drizzt wins.

I believe despite the fact that magic and such was involved and all the odd races, such as elves and dwarfs, the story does seem like it is true. The characters personality wise, do seem very real. I also thought the story was very interesting. I found specific parts such as the fight between the "baron" and Drizzt a very exiting and interesting part. I also thought that the competition between the two wizards Harkle Harpel and Robilard very interesting and comical. Parts such as these kept my interest and made me not want to put the book down.

There are two main characters of this story, those being Drizzt Do'Orden and Catti-brie Battlehammer. Drizzt Do'Orden is a drow elf, and son to Zaknafein Do'Orden. Drizzt is a kind, and fairly understanding person. His dark skin made his heritage apparent, and because of the evil drow elves usually signified he was feared by many who did not know him or know of him.

Catti-brie Battlehammer, is a human. She is the adopted daughter of the dwarvn king Bruenor Battlehammer. Being raised by dwarves she has a dwarvn accent. She is very beautiful and about the age of 1. She is a skilled warrior and hunter.

I do like the way the author has presented these characters, they are both unique. Drizzt being a good drow elf, and Catti-brie being a human raised by dwarves.

This novels setting was in various places. These places include Waterdeep, Caerwich, Mintarn, And Icewind Dale. The setting of each event definitely determined the events that happened there. It would have been very difficult to fit the events into different settings.

I think a good theme to this book would be never under estimate the power of friendship. I say this because through the entire novel Drizzt is help along by his friends and to defeat the "baron". Catti-brie is always at his side along with his 800 pound panther, Guenhwyvar. He also has many other friends that come in along the way to help.

I do agree with this theme. Drizzt always does have a friend by his side helping him along the way; they are always there, even if he really does not need them they are still there for comfort, support, and friendship.

I believe that Passage to Dawn was a good book; I felt that it was very interesting and exiting. At many points it was hard for me to put the book down and do something else if asked to do so or the need comes up. The book set a very energetic and suspenseful tone. The many small disputes kept the energy going, and you were always wondering what is going to happen next. The book was also exiting because there was always something going on that would catch your interest or at least spark it.

I would recommend this book to someone else because I believe that others would enjoy it too. I also feel that the book was worthwhile to read, because it fell right into my interests in what I like to read. I very much enjoyed reading Passage to Dawn and do think others would enjoy it too.
