I went and listened to Dr. Beth Daugherty speak on America's war with Iraq last Thursday. Dr. Daugherty attended the University of Virginia where she received her bachelor's degree and then moved on to earn her master's. She now teaches at a college in Wisconsin. I founder her speech about the war to be very interesting and informative.
Dr. Daugherty's began her speech by highlighting the current situation in Iraq, as well as giving us a few of the latest updates from the battlefield. She then moved on to discuss what she considered four main concerns about the war. These four concerns were the situation in northern Iraq, the situation in southern Iraq, the fight for Baghdad, and the post war administration of Iraq.
The main issue with the situation in northern Iraq deals with the countries northern neighbor, Turkey. Mostly Turkmen and Curtish currently populate Northern Iraq. Turkey is worried about the outcome of Northern Iraq because they could loose control of the region after the war. One problem that we have in this area is that there are not many US troops there right now. The US is waiting to see if the Turkey military will intervene before they send more troops to this region.
The next issue that Dr. Daugherty discussed was the current situation in Southern Iraq. This region is very important since it is where most of our troops are traveling through. The Shea's currently populates this area. They make up about 55 to 60 percent of Iraq's population. The Shea's are predominately an anti-Sadam group, which will most likely ultimately be good for the US. The problem lies in a Shea revolt many years ago in which we betrayed this group. The Shea's have not forgotten this incident and many of them blame the US for their deprivations over the past ten years. The Shea's also view the US and British troops as unwelcome intruders. Another problem in southern Iraq is that the US troops are complaining that they are having to play the role of peacekeepers between different religious groups in Iraq, which is not what they were sent over there to do.

The next issue that Dr. Daugherty addressed was the fight for Baghdad. There are five million people in this city alone and most of them are civilians. The United States has to be careful that they only destroy the enemies in charge rather than the civilians. If there are too many civilian casualties then this will give other countries a bad opinion about the US, which will cause them to be more reluctant to help us. Reports have shown that US troops are having difficulty avoiding street fighting in the city of Baghdad.
The last topic that Dr. Daugherty talked about was the post war administration of Iraq. Iraq has the most complicated government structure in the Middle East. The question is who will run the country after the war. One possibility is an American military administration. This would require about 00,000 American troops to occupy Iraq after the war, which is even more than are currently over there. This would be a very costly and long job for the United States, but it may end up being the best solution. Another option is for Iraq's civilians to form a new government of their own. This would be a difficult task considering the Iraqi people have been under Sadam's dictatorship for a very long time. Many of them do not even know what a democracy consists of, which would make it hard for them to form one. The fact that Iraq is a very poor and uneducated country is another obstacle for them to overcome. No matter what the outcome is enacting a new governmental structure will be difficult, considering that they have never had a peaceful transition of power.
Dr. Beth Daugherty then concluded her speech and opened up for questions during the last half of the presentation. Overall I found her to be an excellent speaker and a very intelligent woman. I thought that her speech was great and I took away much new information from it.
