Mona, the young Chinese girls, family owns a pancake house. Her father owns the pancake business, which isolates her father from the American culture. Her father is able to decide upon his own rules and ways of dealing with problems. This isolation of working on his own gives her father a more difficult time assimilating to American ways. Since her family is from China the family has several different ways of handling and contacting different people. For example, how her father treats his pancake employees as slaves, how he comforts the immigrants, or how he treats his workers as "his boys." Outside the Pancake house, American society reacts different toward him. For instance, going to a Mrs. Lardner's bon voyage bash, Jeremy the party boy treats him like a servant due to the fact that he is a foreigner. In this case the Pancake house serves as a security factor for them. Their the family feels safe being away from the new American culture, which they are not used to.

In the section of the story, "In his Own Society," his own society, being within the pancake house, demonstrates the way her father treats his workers. Her father expects his employees to be dedicated, lighthearted, and hard-working. In the past her father has had many employees slip from their position because of her fathers treatment. "He demanded a similar sort of loyalty of his workers, whom he treated more like servants than employees (116)." In the beginning of his friendship, with his employees he doesn't expect as much as one would think. As time passes each worker is expected to fulfill many more duties. This created trouble for him, because he was in more and more need of help. Mona's father's high expectations of the workers created many complaints and resigns from the company. "The cooks and busboys complained that he asked them to fix radiators and trim hedges, not only at the restaurant but at our house; the waitresses, that he sent on errands, and made them chauffer him around. Our head waitress, Gertrude, claimed that he once even asked her to scratch his back (116)." Obviously the Chinese culture has different expectations of employee treatment, which is different than American culture. This separates him from American culture and society.

In the section, "In the American Society," her father attends a bon voyage bash with the family for whom he does not know. Her mother's good friend Mrs. Lardner insists they attend her friend Jeremy's go away party. Being dressed up, and the only Chinese family at the party, makes her father feel insecure and out of place. As time passes Jeremy eventually walks up to her father and assaults him for attending his party due to the fact he doesn't know him. Mrs. Lardner apologizes and steps in and introduces them. Jeremy apologized and offered to give him clothing. Her father got angry and refused to take orders from him. He felt insulted and brutally embarrassed after the way Jeremy treated him in front of other people. Jeremy accused her father of being overdressed and overall out of place. This event is an example of how her father is treated outside the Pancake house. He feels out of place and insecure with his surroundings. Dressing up and attending someone else's party is definitely not something he would prefer to do in China. This is why he prefers to be at his secure pancake house, where he can create his own rules and culture.

From her fathers experience in his own society and in the American society, the reader is clearly able to see how her father deals with the pressures of both worlds. The fact that he is Chinese makes him feel separated and isolated from the American society. He feels out of place after trying to "fit in," and prefers to go by his own way of living. His treatment toward his employees and the reasons why he feels out of place allows the reader to realize the difference between cultures, and how hard it is to assimilate the American lifestyle. The importance of the telling of ones story gives a person the opportunity to learn about oneself, from the Chinese culture, and to voice even just a little of their distress, and to value the path one has taken in their past country.
