A Mission for Mexico

What exactly is a Mission for Mexico? Well, there are many different types of missions for Mexico. However, I'd like to talk about two in particular. These missions, although they were identical, each one represents something different to me. These trips took place when I was seventeen and eighteen years old. Although there are many different missions that go to Mexico each year with different goals and aims in mind, the two I went on were known as Habitat Trips. The trips were tough, but in the end they both were worth it.

The first trip I went on was sponsored by The 1st Presbyterian Church of Selma, Alabama. The mission team was composed of fifteen adults and nine kids. It all started in early July when we boarded a church bus that was bound for The Birmingham International Airport. The trip from Selma to The Birmingham Airport took about two and a half hours, during which time our team was able to grow closer as a group.

Once we had arrived at the airport the adults in the group began the long and tedious process of checking in over one hundred bags of luggage and equipment all the while keeping an eye on us kids. After the luggage had been checked in and the tickets had been given out, all of us patiently waited on our flight that was going to take us to Houston, Texas. The flight to Houston International wasn't that bad; the entire trip only took three hours.

Shortly after we had reached the airport's loading tarmac our team was pilled into three full-sized Chevrolet vans, their job was to take us the rest of the way into Mexico. When we reached the Mexican border, our group was pulled aside and was made to wait, as Mexican and American Officials went through our entire luggage. It was a minor setback, and something we had expected from the beginning. After entering Mexico some of the members of our team, mostly the kids, were shocked by the utter poverty that was plainly visible once we had crossed the border. Most of the houses were made from either cardboard boxes tacked together or aluminum sheets nailed to plywood rafters. Anyone that has not seen these sites with their own eyes cannot begin to understand the true poverty of this country.

We made it to our hotel safely and we were to begin our mission bright and early the very next day. Our mission was to construct a small cinderblock house for a family that desperately needed somewhere safe to stay. During the next to weeks the temperature ranged from one hundred and five degrees all the way up to one hundred and fifteen degrees. The father of the family that would soon move into the house helped us build it. Everything went according to plan and our team was proud to present the house key to the family at the end of the second week.

I thought those two weeks in Mexico were real eye openers for me! However, I hadn't even taken into account the fact that I would be going back the following year, and that trip would be an experience I would never forget!

The following year, I was given the opportunity to go back to Mexico with another Habitat Team. This team was made up of almost all new people, some I had never met before, and some I knew well. We went back to the same general location as the first year. Our job this year was the same as the year before it, to construct another

cinderblock house. This year the foundation for the cinderblock house had already been put into place by the organization that had sponsored our team. The job now remained to stack the cinderblocks, put into place the iron rebar for holding the blocks together and to PVC both the outside and inside of the house. The house was being built at record speed, until our team ran into a problem. The roofing slats that were supposed to arrive on a Wednesday arrived two days later on Friday. This had the effect of making the group work over-time to complete the house by Saturday morning.

After all was said and done we handed the key to another grateful family and headed back to our hotel to pack and go home. As we were driving back through the neighborhood on our way to the hotel I saw the house I had built last year! We stopped the van and everyone got out. I was the only person there that had worked on the house the previous year. The man and his family came out to greet us. He even remembered my name! The first year was unique since I had never built a house before. However, the second year, and seeing that family living in the house that we had built for them changed my life forever! I will never forget the look on that family's face, when they saw me and exclaimed "PATRICK"! It was an experience and a feeling I will never forget. And after that final day in Mexico I realized that it had all been worth it!
