Since the early nineties, a debate in Congress over the situation of the National Endowment of the Arts funding has been raging. Baldwin and other supporters of the NEA make the point that the agencys current budget of just under $100 million is a pittance in a $7 billion industry. Hes right. So couldnt the wealthy leaders of that industry come up with enough money to replace the NEA budget? The First Amendment well protects privately produced art.

In conclusion, I don't believe that everything that the NEA has sponsored has been wrong. I'm sure that they have given money to some very worthy causes. But where do you draw the line between "art" and "garbage"? I think this is a very hard line for the federal government to draw. I just don't think that this can be done. We will only have controversy after controversy. With taxes as high as they are and military pay as low as it is, I just don't see it as being very responsible to spend that much money on art, whether "good" art or "bad" art.
