Civilian life on the home front varied between many different factors. It not only depended on if you lived in the North or the South, but also if you lived in an urban area or rural area in the North or South. Civilians in the North Sacrificed much less than civilians in the South, mainly because most of the war was fought in the South. As I mentioned before there are about four factors that determined what kind of life or they had.

In Northern cities many soldiers went to war, they left the wives and children to keep up the house, and the money. Many women had to find jobs or start their own businesses to keep income coming in while their husbands were off at war. In some cases when children weren't at school they were working to contribute to the family salary. For the rich people, the war did not affect them as much. They could pay someone to serve in the army in their place, so that the men could stay home and keep up with their businesses. This may sound kind of bad, but it is good also because many new businesses that helped provide things for the war. So these men and their businesses were busier than ever before. Also, big cities were used for hospitals for wounded soldiers. There were very many wounded soldiers and not enough nurses. So this called for more civilian women to come and help out at the hospitals. One of the organizations that helped wounded soldiers was the Sanitary Commission.

The Rural areas of the North were normally smaller type towns outside of the big cities. For them, their life changed considerably. Many of them depended on farming and could not afford to pay for someone to go into the war for them. So the wives and children were left to run the farm, which is very tedious work. They would start at dawn and go until after dark with out many breaks. And don't forget house chores, these were done at night so they could work during the day on the farm. When children had time they did the things that we do now, such as playing, swimming, horseback riding, or anything they could find to do. Children needed to be educated also. There was hardly any money for extra things such as toys, books, and etc. there was barely enough money for the simple things such as clothes, soap, and things like that. Women would get together once in a while and do what they could to help out with the army, including sewing uniforms, and collecting food for the soldiers. All of the communication between them and their husbands or sons in the army was writing letters. It might be months until they even got it. It was difficult to get letters to every one. Families would wait around for hours to see if their husband or son was on the wounded/ dead or missing list.

In Southern cities, war and fighting became a "way of life." In Vicksburg the fighting became so horrible that citizens were forced to live in caves along the Mississippi River, they did this for protection against the Union army. They had little food, some had to eat rats. The largest issue in the south was the fall of their economy. Prices went up very high, one example would be that one piece of firewood cost $5.00! People would burn their furniture to keep warm because they could not afford firewood. The food supply was very low. The army had priority over the food since they needed it more than civilians so they could be fed during the war. One event from this was Richmond Bread Riot, where women rioted because they could not find bread for them and their families. President Davis tried to help them and threw out what money he had to them.

Custom Essays on Civilian Life

The rural south was hit the hardest during the civil war. Many of the battles took place in this area. Farms, crops, and cattle were destroyed. People were kicked out of their homes for them to become hospitals for the wounded soldiers. Bodies were often left all over the fields. The odor filled the air. Many dead animals were burned. Union artillery shells that hadn't gone off earlier sometimes killed civilians. General Sherman's strategy to defeat the south was to destroy everything they had until they would give up fighting. This took place mainly in Georgia for about 60 miles wide. They burned buildings that held supplies for the war, destroyed farms, houses, and many other things. As you can see Southerners suffered very much.

Wes Anderson and The Royal Tenenbaums

It takes a lot for a movie to be successful in the film industry. From cast and crew all the way up to the main color seen through out the movie, it takes long periods of planning. Light colors can give off a warm feeling and cool colors can give sort of an uncomfortable or eerie feeling to the movie. Music choice also has a big impact on the movie. It takes a lot of listening to figure which one is best for each scene. A good example of a film that follows all these guidelines is "The Royal Tenenbaums." It is a brilliant film. From emotions and humor to satire and irony.

The setting of the movie takes place in New York City. Wes Anderson, the director, wanted to make it seem like it takes place in sort of a fable town. He does this to give the movie a different feeling. So you never see any landmarks or anything to let you know that it is in New York City. It also is a very quiet part of the city so it doesn't really seem like your ideal place in New York. The time period is never really stated. The main colors through out the film are mainly warm browns and yellows. With one scene where there is a very cold blue to make it seem uncomfortable. The music for the movie goes well too it is very calm and moody. And the cast and crew were thought out very well. The story is about a family with three kids who are geniuses, a father who doesn't actually know what it means to be a father, and a mother who just wants the best for her kids. The parents want their family to be perfect and to be noticed, so they start them off young with teaching. In turn they achieve things very young in life then spend the rest of their lives trying to figure out who they are. The father and the mother are getting a divorce in the beginning. Each character that is introduced tells you sort of how they fit into the family.

Royal Tenenbaum, played by Gene Hackman, the father of the family, didn't really know much about being a father and he always chose favorites. After he and his wife separated he lived in a hotel, the Lindbergh Palace for years. He once was a litigater until thrown into jail. Later in the movie he realizes he loves all his kids, even his adopted daughter. He is a very stubborn man and wants his children to be geniuses and known through out their lives.

Etheline Tenenbaum, played by Anjelica Huston, is the mother of the family. All she really wants is the best for her kids.

Margot Tenenbaum, played by Gyweneth Paltrow, was adopted into the family at age two. She was a playwright at a young age and won a Braver Man Grant, for a lot of money, in the ninth grade. She was always introduced as the adopted daughter. Through out the movie she is very quiet and always alone. She is always looking for attention from her family though, especially Royal.

Chas Tenenbaum, played by Ben Stiller, worked in the business breeding and selling dalmatian mice, which there really are no such things. At an early age he was buying real estate. He grows up and gets married but then his wife dies in a plane crash. He is left with taking care of his two kids, and ends up with sort of an obsessive-compulsive disorder for their safety.

Richie Tenenbaum, played by Luke Wilson, is a championship tennis player. He has been since the third grade. At the age of seventeen he became a pro. He won the US nationals for three years in a row. He occasionally painted. He retired from tennis later on in life. He was a major character in the story, the one you probably get to know the best.

These are all the characters in the family. There are more characters but those actors make the family, or the story line. All these characters were played by great actors which made the movie fit well together. The irony of the movie is that you never really get to know the characters personally but you can still have sympathy for them. There is not really enough time to personally get to know each character. They are just mildly introduced. But the way the movie was put together and acted out you can still get teary eyed in the end. This is a really great movie. Wes Anderson did an amazing job with everything from cast and crew to colors and music; it all seemed to fit together.

As our nation becomes more ethnically and culturally diverse, companies are under pressure with the issue of workforce diversity. Managing diversity is not a new issue faced by companies. But the way it is used or managed has changed. The latest development is to use diversity as a competitive business strategy. Allstate is one of companies that is culturally diverse and is seeing improved results ranging from better customer satisfaction to increased sales.

For several years, diversified workforce was social responsibility and legal necessity. It was thought that competitiveness and corporate social responsibility were opposing policies. A competitive organization was driven by profit maximization. But in today's world, both views have converged. Both are equally important for business. Allstate is one such example.

Allstate insurance company has been managing diversity which is closely associated to its overall corporate objectives. The company launched its first affirmative action program in 16. The focus was on affirmative action and diversity awareness through education and training. Allstate formulated four specific steps succession planning, development, measurement, accountability and reward to create powerful diverse environment that had positive impact on business results.

All the elements included in the steps are aimed at retaining the best employees. Under succession planning, Allstate uses several methods to seek out the best candidates for each key position. The main purpose is to ensure that workforce is diverse at levels. As a result of succession planning, 40% of Allstate's executives are women and 0% are minorities. Through the development process, all employees receive an evaluation of their current job skills and ways for developing skills required for advancement. Twice a year the company provides a survey to its employees, which is part of measurement step. The feedback from employees helps in creating plans to solve problems and improve work diversity. Also to link compensation to the diversity goals, 5% of each manager's merit pay is based on the diversity index.

By incorporating the above steps, Allstate has used diversity, a powerful tool, for building competitive advantage. The company has been able to attract and retain motivated employees. Allstate has a reputation for providing opportunities for diverse employees, which has given it a competitive advantage in the labor market. Since employees think their differences are respected they become more loyal, productive and committed.

The composition of the customer base of companies has changed due to diversity. A multicultural workforce can provide a company with greater knowledge of the consuming habits and preferences of consumers. This knowledge can assist Allstate in developing better marketing campaigns and services to satisfy customer needs. Also diverse work teams promote creativity and innovation, because people from different background and situations have different opinions. If Allstate effectively manages these work teams then more options and solutions can be generated. Diverse workforce also brings flexibility and competitiveness to an organization.

Due to its diversity efforts, Allstate in 00 was named one of the "50 Best Companies for Minorities" by Fortune. Also it was included in the top 10 in the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" survey done by Working Mother magazine. A. Magazine included Allstate among "Five Model Companies for Asians." Like Joan Crockett, VP of human resources said, "The accolades are nice, but they still represent an opportunity for further improvement."

Allstate should also focus on employing senior citizens and tapping into the senior market as a diversifying initiative. The baby boomers will soon be in the senior citizen brackets. There are not many companies who employ senior citizens or insurance companies who offer senior citizen insurance package. By focusing in this area Allstate will be an equal opportunity leader in the true sense.

My name is Daynelis Brito-Capote. I was born in the beautiful City of Havana, Cuba. Ad the oldest of my parent's two most wonderful creations, I have been a role model to my youngest sister Amnelis. From a very early age, I have had to be cautious of my Behaviours, as I would never want to serve as a disappointment to my sister. She looks up to me and I always intend to provide her with an admirable example.

My parents are people of high morals and values and they have always pushed my sister and I to be the best that we could be more importantly they demand that I push myself to do the same with regard to the decisions I make and my plans for the future. They also have taught me to always respect myself and to demand the respect of others. This moral code carries through to all aspects in my life.

Being born in Cuba and raised there until the age of fourteen, means that I am steeped in its culture, lifestyle, values and its dominant Catholic religion. It has been quite challenging to came to a country with so many diverse backgrounds, different standards of living and varied ideals and principles. In the Spanish community, reptation is sacred; especially if you are a female. Dealing with the liberal attitudes of Canadians and the severe peer pressure to conform has been an internal battle that I take pride and dignity in conquering. Being Cuban is and forever will be the foundation of who I am, however having the challenge and opportunity to participate fully in two separate cultures has taught me to grow strong and be a very open-minded person. One of my greatest accomplishments to date is learning a new style of living and an entirely new language within the confines of only three years.

Throughout my life I have been involve in many extra curricular activities, all wich have helped to shape and mould me as a person. After struggling through ballet for several years, I finally decided that it was not the genre of dance for me, so at the age of eight I discovered Flamenco dance and realised I really had a talent for it. I put a lot of hard work and dedication into becoming a great dancer. During the last years of elementary and the three years of junior high I was also involve in choral singing, track and field and the school dance team and play. These are some of the thing I really miss about my home country as well as my friends and the weather. But I decided when I came to school here in Canada that the language was not going to stop me from doing those things that I enjoyed most. In my ninth grade year, I participated in all of the school assemblies and in grade ten I had a lead role in the school's major dramatic production; "FAME". In addition to this I joined the diversity club and dedicated a lot of my time to make students from different cultural backgrounds fell welcomed and comfortable in the school as well as in the community. Being a part of this organization provided me with an increased interest in learning a third language and last year I participated in the bi-lingual work exchange program where I was able to study and work in French. This year I served as the president of the Diversity Club and was instrumental in preparing the first annual "International Food Night". AS a member of PAWEECA, a school based charity group, I have been dedicated to volunteering with various groups within the community. I have also been teacher's assistant for the grades elevens dance program, modeled in the school fashion show and and currently serve on the school's safe grad committee. Amazingly enough I have been able to balance my studies and extra curricular activities while holding down two part-time jobs.

When I was a little girl in Cuba, life was not always easy. I always had very strong work ethic and I told myself that if I really wanted it I could do anything. I have always followed my instincts and although on many occasions I have directed myself along the wrong path I have been able to get out if it was interrupting the path I have traced to my future. It had not been easy but it can be done and honestly so far in my life I have been a blessing with not true regrets. I look forward to the future challenges of my life and hope that I can always be c shining example not only to my litter sister but also for anyone who faces the adversity and challenges of life.

Rules and guidelines are established within societies in order for them to function. Without this system, everyone would behave in any way they wanted, creating an undesirable environment. With the use of context and character symbolization in The Devil's Teardrop, Jeffrey Deaver illustrates the effect of deviance and crime on a society. He explains the importance of norms and rules established in society and shows the consequences if they are not followed. Another social issue touched in this novel is the effect of mentally ill individuals in a functioning society. The criminal behaviour of the two characters, Edward Fielding and Evan Hughes are solely blamed on their mental illnesses. The author shows that mental illness is a danger to society since these individuals cannot conform to these rules. By doing this, Jeffrey Deaver correlates mental illness with deviance and crime. The author has a functionalistic point of view in that he believes that it is more important focussing on the survival of society rather than on the individuals themselves.

The key social issue outlined throughout the entire novel is the effect of deviance and crime on a society. Edward Fielding, one of the killers, wanted to prove to himself and to society that he did not have to conform to the rules and regulations that are established. "He spent hours wondering, should man put restraints on himself? Why shouldn't we go wherever our desires and minds take us?" (p. 8). With Fielding's desire to deviate from the norms, along with his mental illness, he and his partner commit mass murders starting at four pm and every four hours after that. Hughes, Fielding's partner in crime was aptly given the name 'Digger' which not only meant gravedigger but also represented an organization in the past that was "mostly economic and social but allied with another group, which was political and more active - sometimes militant. They were called the 'True Levelers.'" ( ). These 'Levelers' "objected to the control of the people by an upper-class elite and by central government" ( ). The name was specifically chosen to oppose the ideas of rules and regulations, and the Digger was designed to bring chaos into society.

Deaver also shows the negative effects of deviance by the targets that the criminals have chosen. The killers target masses of people to demonstrate publicly that they do not have to conform to the laws and conventions of society. By the hysteria taking place during the repulsive mass murders, Deaver illustrates what happens when people do not follow rules. The killers also target areas where the rich frequently attend or areas relating to the government. The first target was the metro station at Dupont Circle where morst of the rich gathered. The next target was the Ritz Carleton, a very expensive hotel and the other, the "Black Wall", a Vietnam War memorial. The "Black Wall" was a target to show the criminals' opinion about the government.

The fact that Fielding does not get away with "the most perfect crime," in the end shows that deviating from society from the author's point of view, can only end in demise (p.86).

Write your The Devil's Teardrop research paper

The author also discusses the issues of mental illness and the effects of mentally ill people being apart of society. Both of the murderers, Fielding and Hughes have a mental illness. The fact that both individuals are creating this chaos in society indicates that mentally ill people are dangerous to society. Deaver gives Hughes an inhumane, monster-like quality with his "blank eyes" (p.7) and no emotions. He "recognizes a smile but doesn't know what it is exactly" (p. 1). The author is insinuating that since mentally ill individuals cannot tell the difference from right and wrong and are unable to follow the rules established in society, they will contribute nothing but conflict to it.

When illustrating the negative effects of deviance and crime in society, the author is successful. By showing the turmoil the citizens of Washington were in, Deaver effectively clarified that following the rules in society are important for it to function properly. Once people start deviating from the established system, it becomes impossible for members in society to live harmoniously.

Most people don't really know a lot about the aspect of aging and its effects on people or in our society theses days. When asked who is growing old? We all are! (Barrow, Smith ). A lot of people might not believe that but in many minds, growing old, like death only happens to others and it happens to individuals older than us. Medical science and technology are extending life expectancy so that we may all experience long lives, but what would be the quality of our lives? Some old people live in isolation in one room of a slum hotel cooking on a hot plate. Others live in inferior board and care homes dependent on poorly paid attendants to meet their needs (Barrow, Smith ). On the other hand, many aged enjoy happy lives surrounded by friends and activities. For some people aging may result in self-realization, but for others it may bring despair. We can have more control over the changes aging brings if we are aware of its certainty and how it has been treated and accepted into our society. Furthermore, we need to know about those factors in ourselves and in our environment that can make aging difficult.

A look at the status of the aged in earlier times when age relationships were very different back in the colonial days, the power and privilege of the old age were deeply rooted in colonial times when age not youth was exalted. To be old was to be respected by society and to be eligible for selection to the most important positions in the community. The community leaders and political office holders tended to be old men. The elderly were honored during ceremonial occasions. According to Barrow and Smith the old were believed to be in favor with God, and their long life was an outward sign that they would be "called" or "elected." The Bible was interpreted to mean that a good person would be rewarded with long life. The tradition of respect for the elderly was rooted not only in religious and political ideology but also in legal and financial reality (Barrow, Smith 5). The elders owned and controlled their land, which did not pass on to their sons until they died. The sons, therefore, had financial reason to show respect and deference to their fathers.

Changes started when there was a clear difference in the political ideology during the time of the enlightenment in the 1700. The principles formulated in the Declaration of Independence became stronger equality for all in legal, social, and political matters. The significance of old age in religious affairs began to lose hold as doctors and other technicians replaced the preachers as the custodians of virtue (Barrow, Smith 5). These ideological changes were accompanied by the transformation of the society from rural to urban. For example a young man, instead of waiting for his father to provide him with land, could move to the city and find work in a factory. This leads us to the term called "Ageism."

Ageism can be defined as the aversion, hatred, and prejudice toward the aged and their manifestations in the form of discrimination (Barrow, Smith 7). Ageism is the third "ism." Racism and sexism are the other two. Racism and sexism prevent racial minorities and women from developing their full potential. Ageism does likewise for the aged individual. Many racial minorities and women have succeeded in spite of prejudice and discrimination; so have many other individuals. But prejudice and discrimination make it hard for them to do so. Ageism can oppress any age. For example if you are young, you may have been told that you are inexperienced or too immature. If you are old, you might also have been told you are out of date or old-fashioned. At both ends of the scale, young or old, you may be the victim of ageism.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Ageism

Ageism is really a complex phenomenon affected by technology, industrialization, changing family patterns, and increased life expectancy e.t.c. Social change can create a generation gap that contributes to ageism. Rapid social change can cause your values to be somewhat different from your parent's values and significantly different from your grandparents. Ageism is a destructive force for both society and the individual, if aging is a social problem; it is largely one that the society itself has created.

My personal Experience " Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment." Have you ever thought about this from a different perspective? Because I am sure that we have all been judged and that we have all judged some one at one point in our life. In my personal experience I have been judged many times though out my life. The people that usually judge me are my family and friends and even people that I have never even seen in my life. There are different kinds of judgments there are goods ones and there are bad ones, but no matter what you do you will never be able to satisfy ever one. The best thing to do is just be your self there are people that will like that and there will be some people that will not but do worry about that just as long as you are happy and comfortable.

In my personal experience the people that do most of the judging are my own family members, which I find that to be very sad. They used to judge me by the way that I would dress. I guess you can say that I used to dress kind of provocative. I used to dress like that because I would always follow the crowed because I used to be very insecure back then. But because I did that my family started to say all kinds of bad things about me. For example they would come over to my house and they would tell my parents that I was never going to accomplish any thing in life. They would also tell them that in any day I would come home with the news that I was pregnant. That is one of the things that hurt me the most. That is when I decided that I was going to prove all of them wrong.

Cheap University Papers on My Personal Experience

This experience made me look at people from a different perspective. Because of my personal experience now I try my best not to judge people because I know what it feels like to be judged. Another thing that I really don't like is when some one compares you to some one else because that is just another form of some one judging you. For example teachers and family members have the tendency of comparing me to my sister I mean don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with that because she is very pretty and smart. But the only problem with that is that when they do that I always feel like I let them down because they had a higher perspective of me and well I will never be like my sister. I absolutely hate it when some one tells me you should be more like your sister because when some tells me that I feel like there are telling me that I am not good enough.

Now that I have been judged so many times it made me realize that not ever thing is what it seems to be. Like they say never judge a book by its cover. What that means to me is that don't judge some one with out giving them a chance to show you who they really are. One thing that bugs me is that there are people that are so ignorant and stupid that they always have the tendency of judging people and talking bad about them for no reason at all. I mean you may meet some one that look all mean, scary and big but you never that person can turn out to be one of sweatiest and most sensitive person that you have ever meet. All you have to do is give people a chance to show you who they really are.

In conclusion what I am trying to say is that I completely agree with the quote. Because once you have been judged in a bad way you have the tendency of trying to avoid that so that every does not have to go though a bad experience. Instead of giving a bad judgment you should try to give them a compliment hey you never some times a simple smile make all the difference in the world. Instead of making them feel bad try to make them feel good about them self.

I hope that we all can learn from this experience because I know that I did. I hope that we will all think about it before judging some one again. Never for get that every one has feelings and ever though some people don't like to show them that doesn't mean that they do have them. We should all try to follow the golden rule and that is treat others how you want to be treated. But most important you shouldn't care about what other people think about you or the way you dress. As long as you are happy just be all that you can be. Never give up on your hopes and dreams you can be any thing your hart deicers.

The question Walker raises in her essay " In Search of Our Mothers Gardens " is How was the creativity of the black woman kept alive? Imagine black women not forced to endure the oppression. What other magnificent artists were not allowed to speak and create? Perhaps the heavy hand of society has silenced many more creative spirits. Her characters move through painful black experiences towards perhaps an understanding of responsible, adult, and serious action that will allow the imaginative living of a life.

Intense spirituality of black women in the South is well expressed. Black women have been abused, mutilated in body, and supposed to be unworthy of hope, beauty and art, they are unaware of their own rich spirituality. Their bodies are utilized by men as sexual objects, and they even became more than it - Saints. These crazy, loony, pitiful women are our mothers and grandmothers (76), and they were actually not Saints but Artists.

Walker argues that for slave women and the generations of unprivileged women, who came after them, the only form of artistic expression available to them was their daily life. In the ordinary tasks of cooking, sewing, and growing food -- tasks on which their survival depended -- these women found a way to express the yearnings of the soul for hope and beauty, as well as the desire to be remembered. Unable to read and to write their own stories, these generations of mothers and grandmothers, their own lives became their greatest work of art.

Alice Walker uses Virginia Woolf's phrase "contrary instincts" to describe the creative spirit of her female ancestors. Her mother had a difficult life, but she managed to keep her creative spirit alive. She held onto what she could in the simplest ways. Where there was a will there was a way. Walker explains that her mother, though tired and overworked, did express and feed her creative spirit. She planted incredible gardens, and still does, with various blooming plants. She adorned the house with flowers from the garden. Walker likens her mother's garden to magic. Friends and strangers visited the garden regularly and would ask to stand or walk amongst her mother's art. Her mother's garden represents an undying love of beauty and creation, symbolizing the weaving of her creative spirit with nature's hand. When Alice Walker went in search of her mother's garden it became a journey about uncovering her own true self.

Write my Essay on Creative Spirituality of Black Women in Walker's "In Search of Our Mother's Gardens"

Alice Walker challenges us, as art does, not to overlook what might be so relative to our true existence; the true means of our existence and who we really are. Don't let a voices be silent by own lack of awareness. Look deeper than ever could. We are born screaming and demanding to be heard. We must choose to be heard and not bury our heads in the sands of oppression.

Walker implies that judging an artist based on skin color or gender leads nowhere. A piece of art can challenge opinions, inspire creativity, and take on a journey. The risk is allowing version of the truth to be questioned. Art asks the viewer to search deeper. Sometimes it might be deeper than you thought you could ever allow yourself to travel, but it is always worth the time.

"In Search of Our Mothers Gardens," Walker asks us to consider what would have become of black women artists who lived in slavery and oppression. Would they have been driven to a numb and bleeding madness by the springs of creativity in them for which there was no release? Walker explains how she discovered her mothers gardens, by which she means her creative female ancestors. Having looked high when she should have been looking low, Walker discovers that the answer is so simple that many of us have spent years discovering it.

1. The Scarlet "A" - The town magistrates sentenced Hester to wear the scarlet A for the rest of her life so everyone could recognize her as an adulteress. Over time, however, newcomers did not know the history of the scarlet "A" and asked its significance. Some townspeople remembered it's meaning, but others forgot, or transformed it to indicate able because of Hesters steady performance of benefiting the sick and the needy.

. The Heart - Dimmesdales placing his hand over his heart is symbolic of his attempt to cover his mark of sinfulness and prevent his exposure. It also suggests his nervous condition and reflects his grieved state.

. Pearl - Pearl is a sort of living version of her mothers scarlet letter. Yet, even as a reminder of Hesters sin, Pearl is more than a punishment to her mother she is also a blessing. She not only represents sin but also the role that caused that sin. Pearls existence gives her mother reason to live, strengthening her spirits when she is tempted to give up.

4. The Meteor - As Dimmesdale stands on the scaffold with Hester and Pearl, a meteor traces out an A in the night sky. To Dimmesdale, the meteor implies that he should wear a mark of shame just as Hester does. The meteor is understood differently by the rest of the community, which thinks that it stands for Angel and symbolizes Governor Winthrops entry into heaven.

5. The Rosebush - Outside of the prison door, a rosebush stands in full bloom. It is said that it is possible, this rosebush...had sprung up under the footsteps of the sainted Ann Hutchinson, as she entered the prison door.

6. The Forest - The forest symbolizes nature, both in its darker and lighter sides. When the sun shines only on Pearl but not on Hester, this symbolizes her inability to find happiness or warmth. The sunshine symbolizes innocence for Pearl while the darkness is suggestive of the guilt in Hester's life. That darkness is shown when she meets with Dimmesdale and plans to flee from Boston with him. As a symbol of her freedom, she throws away the scarlet letter and undoes her hair. A flood of sunshine illuminates the forest, concealing the darkness.

7. Needle While in prison, Hester sewed her scarlet "A" which she wore to indicate adultery. She even sewed beautiful dresses for Pearl to wear and made gloves, ruffs, bands, shrouds, and baby linens to make a living.

8. Herbs and Medicine Roger Chillingworth is a scholar and uses his knowledge to disguise himself as a doctor, intent on discovering Dimmesdale. He uses herbs and medicine and says he has studied alchemy but has no medical degree.

. Tombstone Hester is buried in the King's Chapel graveyard, which is the burial ground for Puritan patriarchs. Her grave is next to Dimmesdale's, but far enough away that "the dust of the two sleepers had no right to mingle, even in death." The headstone displays the scarlet letter "A".

10. Stage (Scaffold) The Puritans believed that when a person has sinned, he should confess his wrongdoing publicly. The scaffold is first introduced when Hester is forced to stand upon it for three hours with newborn Pearl as part of her punishment for her sin of adultery. This event draws an audience of townspeople who laugh at and mock her while she is on the scaffold. Dimmesdale has great difficulty in standing on the platform and confessing his sins. He first does it in the dark so no one could see him. However, in the end he bravely stands on the scaffold and confesses his sin in the light of day before a crowd of people. After his confession he is relieved with a sense of peace.

11. The Sun - The sun is used as a symbol of God and a sign of good and evil. It is used to signify Pearl as an innocent child with a good heart even though she is the product of sin. God showers Pearl in his light as he leaves Hester, a sinner, in the shadows.

Often throughout The Scarlet Letter there are symbolic references made.

The story deals with a Puritan woman who commits adultery and raises an illegitimate child named Pearl. The author, Nathanial Hawthorne, seems

to be rather fond of using religious and natural images to symbolize

Help with essay on the scarlett letter

different points, possibly because of his own Puritan background. One

of the purposes of this symbolism is to show that Puritanism is

hypocritical and that their religious viewpoints are against the

natural order, which is done by using contrasting natural and religious

symbols in the descriptions of Pearl.

First, Hawthorne uses the backdrop of the natural world to show

not only that Pearl is anonymous to the Puritan culture, but

also above it. This is done by using positive natural images

and metaphors to the natural world. Describing Pearl as a

...lovely and immortal flower, out of the rank luxuriance of a

guilty passion (pg. 81), begins this image. This rank

luxuriance is based on the strict Puritan morals. It describes

the child as a mistake or an outcast even though the birth of a

child is supposed to be a wonderful thing. Pearl also has a

sort of love and disposition uncommon of other Puritan children

illustrated by the statement ...Hester could not help

questioning, at such moments, whether Pearl were a human child.

she seemed rather an airy sprite... (pg. 84). Her mother,

being of a Puritan background, seems to disturb her that Pearl

acts so free spirited. The best example of the difference of

Pearl in a positive way is a direct statement about Puritan

children ...Puritan elders; the ugliest weeds of the garden

were their children... (pg. 87). By describing the other

puritan children as weeds, Hawthorne symbolizes the paths that

their lives will take. Weeds will grow up big but will never be

as beautiful as a flower and often tries to smother flowers and

kill them off. The religious descriptions of Pearl are often

used to show the Puritan ideals of the fact that the mother

committed adultery. Even though the child can not help that she

has been labeled as an outcast the rest of her life

indefinitely. Cited conscientiously, Pearl was a born outcast

of the infantile world. An imp of evil, emblem and product of

sin, she had no right among Christian infants. (pg. 86). These

people which are supposed to be Christian and love their

neighbors are being total hypocrites by despising a child just

because they believe that it was erected by the process of a

sinful act. Even her simple childhood temper tantrums are

described as being evil; ...with shrill, incoherent

exclamations, that made her mother tremble because they had so

much the sound of a witchs anathemas in some unknown tongue.

(pg. 86). Hawthorne uses the witch connotation to give it more

image as to what exactly it was that the Puritans feared the

most. Even Pearls own mother, an outcast herself, is

frightened by these temper tantrums. Throughout the book there

are examples of when Pearl has almost some kind of supernatural

ability to see things the way that they really are. A child

these young with these gifts of perception would definitely

have been viewed evil in Puritan society. It was assumed to be

some type of witchcraft. This is even more obvious with the

observations that she makes. When Pearl questions her mother as

to where she came from, the response typically was the

Heavenly Father. Pearl then proceeds to point at Hesters

scarlet letter and replies that she did not come from the

heavenly father. This statement at such a young age reflects

that not only does she recognize herself as an evil outcast

from the Christians but also somewhat of a heretical

statement. These two different conflicting groups of symbols

are more than likely nothing more than a resentment of

Hawthorns Puritan upbringing, but do say a lot about Puritan

society. This contrast of two almost opposite worlds show a

great deal of hypocrisy among the Puritans. The natural world

symbols show Pearl as a normal good-hearted child, while the

religious symbols show her as not only a horrible mistake, but

as a child that almost teeters on the brink of being possessed

or demonic in some way. The most important part is that it is

the readers own opinion as to who is correct.

Should I blow the money or save it? Should I go to church? Decision-making is considered to be a significant variable to differentiate childhood from adulthood. I have dealt with situations where a single decision could deeply affect me or a group of people. Some of these were more serious than others, and my conscience directed the choices. In the past, I wouldn't take the time to evaluate consequences of my decisions. That Thursday afternoon made me think twice.

The midday sun blinded me through the van's open windows. Sweat softly trickled onto my tattered jersey as I fastened my shoulder pads. I hated rushing to football practice while adjusting my uniform in a car without air-conditioning. My closed eyelids now felt the perspiration from my forehead. When I was satisfied with the fitting of the oversized pads, I brought my hand to a saluting position and blinked my eyes open.

"I told you to get ready earlier," my mom pointed out. She was always fanatical about arriving everywhere on time.

"It's okay, practice doesn't start for another five minutes," I replied.

Buy cheap decision making term paper

I could care less about being late. I had received a second consecutive C on a test, and this time it was math, my easiest subject. Football had consumed a lot of my time this week and I was still adjusting to the higher demands of seventh grade. During the past years, my teachers had been considerate the first couple of weeks. I had another load of homework to complete that night.

"How was school?" she asked. "I noticed you were up late finishing that project."

"I think the teacher liked, it." I decided not to mention the test. The last thing I wanted was to be yelled at before a long practice.

"She must have if it took you that long," she suggested. "I'm glad you're getting your homework done."

"I just hope the next few months aren't like this. I have a lot to do tonight."

"Again?" She had that glare I had become accustomed to. I have learned that her dark brown eyes did a poor job of concealing her feelings. Even her reserved voice could disguise her deepest emotions, but I could read the uneasiness in those reflective eyes.

"Are you sure you want to continue with football, Randy? I've been worried about you a lot lately," she asked, glancing at me with questioning eyebrows.

I delayed my response. The thought of not participating in my favorite sport had not only been unimaginable, but it seemed unnatural. Ever since I tackled my first opponent at the age of eight, my passion for football had been constantly flourishing. It had more meaning to me than just an extracurricular activity. At times, I would somehow wake up willingly on a Monday at the thought of being able to put on the pads.

"I love football," I finally answered.

"I know you do. I just think a break from school at this time would benefit you."

"But I've always been able to play before."

"You're right, but this is a lot different. Seventh grade counts more towards high school. Besides, taking one season off wouldn't be such a drastic change. It's not like football will play a major part of your future life. On the other hand, if…" I zoned out as she continued to lecture. Her small lips moved without sound.

I couldn't understand why my mom, who had enrolled me into numerous sports and activities, was suddenly concerned about my capacity to take part in football. Maybe I was engulfed in stress from school but quitting football hadn't been an option. I began to think about achieving a high GPA the past years and goals I had for getting into a good high school. What could football offer me after high school anyway? I acknowledged the fact that my priorities would establish my future.

"… so if you want we could turn back home and you can sleep on it tonight," she added.

"Yeah, I guess that's best," I said with a sound of disappointment. My mom was a little taken back at my response. Even I was surprised with myself.

At the time I couldn't recognize the significance of my decision. My answer had indicated a mature judgment not driven by selfish desire. For once, I made the less favorable choice, perceiving the eventual outcomes. My grades reflected a greater dedication to schoolwork. The following two years, I signed up for football again with a greater ability to balance my schedule. I used the extra time I had to develop a better approach to academics and it paid off in the long run.

The professional playing field of an organization is filled with a diverse community of players. Organizational age discrimination is commonly experienced in the corporate environment. As on a playing field, managers, like coaches, must always be aware of players' strengths and weaknesses. When opportunities within the organization become available, managers, prepared with sensitivity and wisdom, can guide their team into the best position to accomplish their task assigned and common goal. An effective manager will utilize the diversity of his team players in order to meet the goal of the organization. This may require stepping out of comfort zones in order to meet the criteria of the task at hand. It may require that each player works with someone from another ethnic background, culture, race, age, or gender to reach the common goal. Discrimination can cause an organization to fulminate from within, destroying the common vision. The corporate environment is a recycling bin with new players exiting and entering while creating variable organizational age diversity. The new, often young members arrive with fresh ideas, new abilities, educational enlightenment, and exciting technological knowledge. These vibrant players are often placed in leadership roles based solely on their educational accomplishments. Unless they have had training in cultural and ethnic diversity, their experience and knowledge base is limited. Management training of age diversity is almost non-existent. The corporate environment has become rich in cultural and ethnic diversity as it expands into a worldwide environment. It is with this new eagerness, openness, and willingness, that the corporate team frequently does not properly utilize the aged employee. Consider what the older, mature team member brings to the organization. When a team chooses to utilize the older team player to nourish, instruct, guide, and mentor, the younger team member, then the strength of the corporate network becomes capable of richly powering an ever-changing environment. Illustrations have been shown how cross-cultural mentoring requires the shedding of old beliefs and learning of new. The communication process between the mature team member and the young team member requires patience, respect, kindness, and most of all, the ability to listen. These skills are not commonly taught in the educational domain to the enthusiastic, energetic, youthful team member. These are soft skills that are developed from years of experience, lessons of learning, and length of service. I believe that a willingness to "learn how to learn" and the ability to "learn from experience" are among the best ways of coping with continuous change. It is with this willingness to learn that our mature players and our younger players in the corporate environment can prepare for the discrimination felt in the culturally diverse playing field of our organizational environment. This reminds us to resolve to eliminate stereotypes and generalizations in our thinking. By understanding ourselves better, we can seek to better understand others. Mentoring of the younger new employee by the mature experienced employee will best meet the corporate vision. If the experienced employee is also age mature, the opportunity of the new, frequently younger employee, to gain communication and listening skills are enhanced. In the organizational game field, the mentoring process is a reflective process. The less mature member often enhances the organizational team with unlimited energy and enthusiasm. The older team member brings wisdom, a lifetime of experience, a large knowledge base, and a trusted work ethnic, to the corporate playing field. Meshing the two together, youth and maturity, will enable an organization to succeed employing the best of both worlds. Creating organizational age diversity in the corporate environment will offer success in the constantly changing world of cultural and ethnic change. The corporate playing field would best succeed by incorporating all age groups in continued learning, training, and mentoring in order to reach the desired goals of the corporation. The acceptance of organizational age diversity is attainable if groups are given the opportunity for communication and encouragement and the sharing of the company's knowledge base to each generation.

Misjudged Youth in Contemporary America

Punk (pungk) n. Slang a young inexperienced boy. Adj. Of or relating to bizarre style of clothing; relating to punk rock bands. (Webster's Dictionary) When most people think of the term "punk" they automatically refer to the dictionary definition without even realizing it, and in a sense prejudging those associated as punks. There are several horrifically unjust stereotypes associated with punks. Although most people do see punks as degenerate, uneducated, troublemakers; they also may be seen as misfits simply looking for a scene where they can be accepted for who they are and not what they look like.

To say all punks are uneducated is to say "all teenagers are drunken dope addicts or glue sniffers." (Less Than Jake, "All My Friends Are Metal-Heads") Just to name one example of how "uneducated" punks are Greg Graffin, lead singer of Bad Religion, a very prominent punk rock band formed in the 180's "has a Bachelors Degree in Anthropology and a Master of Science degree in Geology from UCLA. He has spent four years on a Ph.D. at Cornell in Zoology but is not yet finished with that degree" (http//www.badreligion.com/badreligion/rf/rf.jsp). The band even offers a grant for research in the scientific field ranging from $000-$5000, depending on the need of the winning applicant. One reason why I believe that there are not more "punks" like Mr. Graffin is that because of the prejudice against punks, most educators see them as punks and not students and thereby give up, denying them a proper education, and causing the stereotype to thrive.

One misconception of punks is that they are nothing but juvenile delinquents on the road to prison and poverty. People also pass punks off as Anarchists because of one well known song by the British band, The Sex-Pistols, called "Anarchy in the U.K.," which is rather unfair because there are only a small group of those who even follow or claim to follow anarchy, and only then because it is supposedly the "hip" thing to do. In reality, there are many strongly patriotic punks that would go to war for this country, and die, in order to protect democracy. I myself have been pulled over by police because I looked suspicious due to the fact that I had a blue Mohawk, so I must surely be on my way to vandalize the local school or rob some little old lady.

Do my essay on Misjudged Youth In Contemporary America CHEAP !

Another belief which I find extremely offensive is that punks are raging alcoholic wife-beaters. I would give my life to protect my fiancand our daughter. My family is one of the most important things in my life and I could never find myself ever raising a fist in anger on either of them. There are many others like myself that are devoted to their families whole-heartedly and would do whatever it took to protect them.

This country is based upon the principles of freedom and equal rights, yet even to this day punks are still strongly discriminated against. A wonderful example of this is the story of Brian Deneke. Brian Theodore Deneke was a 1 year old punk from Amarillo, Texas, whose life was brought to a tragic end when a local football player, Dustin Camp, ran him over with his Cadillac, saying "I bet he liked that," after. The case went to trial and the jury only gave Dustin 10 years probation and $10,000 fine, and even allowed him to walk with his graduating class (http//www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Street/800/Deneke/deneke.html).

One of the most appealing things about punk is the acceptance. Because a majority of those in the punk community come from similar backgrounds broken homes, abusive backgrounds, etc. there seems to be a greater acceptability of others.

Punks are like a minority in this country, however unlike other minorities, they still have not been granted the full rights and protections promised in the Constitution. Therefore I ask that next time you see a punk, do not be frightened, for we are all people; just because we look different, and have different views, it does not mean that we do not have our similarities. Punks are seen as illiterate idiots, criminals, domestic abusers, and anarchist bible-burners. Actually some are highly educated, law-abiding, loving, patriotic Americans who are not even appreciated or accepted in their own communities.

· Factors affecting it… P.E.T. (Political, Economic, Technological)

· Since '80's major restructuring of media industries due to globalisation

Order custom research paper on Notes on Media topics

· Interdependency- helping out countries (rd world debt)

Hegemonic Version…(Branston and Stafford)

· Enormous process

· Irresistible

· Baffling

· Beyond people's control

· Inscrutable

Counter-hegemonic Version…(Branston and Stafford)

· Cause - effect relationship between local and global actions and results

· E.g. rd world debt

· Open to some kinds of regulation and direction

Uneven Development…

· Lack of free market (no total freedom of speech)

· E.g. The development of Burmese pop music… C.F.I.C. (Censoring, Forbidding exports/imports, Inferior sound systems, Cover versions restrict Burmese identity)

Fragments as it Co-ordinates…

Are there no others?

· Globalisation does not consider this only considers majority.

· E.g. Sept 11th America refuses to accept the views of terrorist nations

· Is there such a thing as a 'right-thinking' nation?

Globalisation…

· Inflicts views on other nations

· Others are not always considered

· Uneven because countries will always be richer/poorer

What are Uses and Gratifications?

· "What people do with the media" (Marris and Thornham)

· Individualistic generalises.

· People can look to the same material for different gratifications or different materials for the same gratifications U&G theory does not consider this.

· Circular assumes audience has total control over the media.

· Isolated does not consider other influences outside mass communication.

· Imprisons research.

· Does not consider whose interests are being served.

How these criticisms were useful

· Will lead to a better paradigm.

· Effects theory and U&G could well be considered in the next paradigm in the future.

Conclusion

· No paradigm will describe the mass communication process perfectly it is too complex.

Regulation is…(Thompson)

· Government policies and rules

· Reproduction of a similar pattern

· "One of the most controversial topics in modern society"

· Complex

· Influenced by many factors

Why is regulation such a controversial topic? (Thompson)

· Policy not rational

· De-regulation

· Favours the status quo

· Previous alliances between the government and the media such as Murdoch and Thatcher (Herman and McChesney)

Importance of pressures on Ofcom

· Government regulate the content of the media as Thompson said. Can be influenced by the media.

· Advertisers "Ghettoised" US children's TV programmes (Herman and McChesney). The level of US children's TV decreased from -5 hrs p/w between '55 and '70.

· Audience U&G and effects suggest audience are important. They have weaknesses and invalidities and do not consider other contextual pressures. Have influence as a collective but not as a set of individuals.

· TV, Radio and Newspapers Ofcom will not be able to have full control of them without their say.

Conclusion

· Government most important pressure according to Thompson because they govern the media and make the rules.

· Maybe it shouldn't be the government making the rules because they have been influenced by the key players in the media before (Murdoch). The Italian government were also influenced by Berlusconi as well.

· The greatest concern is that WILL ONE CORPORATION BE IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING?

Doyle presents the breakdown of their marriage in many ways. The most usual is Paddy hearing shouts or a slap from downstairs. This is just a glimpse of the reality and seriousness of the problem, just like Paddy's understanding of the situation at hand, this is realistic as a young boy of Paddy's age only cares and knows about football and running around not these complicated scenarios. "I didn't understand", "She was lovely. He was nice". This is Paddy's childish view of the situation.

One way that Doyle does well is getting into the mind of Paddy or a 10 year-old. He thinks about what he would do. Since Paddy can't stand his parents fighting he thinks he can make them, force them to stop. "Stop, I had done it, I had forced them to stop!" I think that this is amusing but saddening at the same time!

Another moving projection of the break-up is when da hits ma (which is moving in itself) who then walks out of the room or goes up to her room sobbing. This has a nock on effect, making ma think that the divorce is near and so she "held on to us for longer, gripped us and looked over us at the floor or the ceiling" obviously with great grief, passion for her children and thought of what will be the outcome of this horrible ongoing fight. This is an unhappy image of some one losing their family and saying one last good bye that they never want to end.

Paddy's parents try to conceal their arguments and quarrels from the children so that they will not have to worry about the problem. They do this by trying not to fight in the presence of the children, but there is still an air of hostility about them. They also try to keep the noise level down when they are fighting so that the children don't hear but Paddy explains to Sinbad or Francis that it is the same shouting and arguing every night. At another point in the novel Paddy says that they argued with "whispered shouts" as if they were meant to be whispering but had forgotten.

It is both childish and realistic the way Paddy thinks of the fight as an ongoing 'boxing match'. He wants it to go on for ever so that no one will lose and that he will keep both of his parents, for if someone loses they will be gone from the family and his life. He'd prefer to live in a fight to losing a parent because he is the referee and he could manage the situation so that everything would be ok and that his parents would keep on bouncing back. I think that this is very sad that he has to live through this starting at the age of nine.

I think that it's excellently well done how Doyle has included everything that would happen during a brake-up including da the man of the house going to the pub to get away from it all and to forget all of his troubles by getting drunk out of your mind. This is moving the way that he can only get through it all by having a drink but is realistic also! "He had just come home late" "he followed the steam coming off his plate." like a new born. Doyle even describes the sweat on da's face creating a shiny effect.

Then Paddy starts to wonder if the behaviour of his parents could actually be normal and asks Kevin if it was the same scenario at his home as he needs reassurance and someone to talk to. "Do your ma and da have fights?" " Yeah then said Kevin they have them all the time." "I was glad I'd asked. It had taken me all day to get to it."

Doyle subtly shows us how bad it is at home for Paddy being surrounded by arguments all day and into the night. He starts to have problems at school including falling asleep during a geography lesson. For he can't get any sleep at home. "I woke up. I didn't move. I wasn't in bed. The smell was different, leather." This was Paddy waking up in the headmaster's office. Not only this but he also is considering the option of running away.

As the Book moves on everything about Paddy's life gets grimmer from exciting fun packed adventures to the now failing picnics and fighting at home and wonderful parents to new strange ones, "She looked thinner. He looked older." This is all because of a break-up in a relationship! It is as if Paddy's world has gone from a colourful and warm one to a grey and cold one.

Moby Dick is a well-known novel in which Herman Melville depicts the story of Ahab, a captain of the Pequod. Captain Ahab journeys over oceans in search of an enormous white whale, for the reason that Moby Dick bit off one of Ahab's legs and he is seeking revenge. Herman Melville uses recurring images, motifs and deep meanings of the passage to enhance the tone and theme of the novel Moby Dick.

The strong use of recurring images and motifs assists in developing the tone and theme of Moby Dick. In the selected passage, Melville's commentary is shown through vivid metaphors. One example of a metaphor is seen when he discusses Mordecai. Melville describes Mordecai as being a Fast-Fish. The doctrine of the Fast-Fish Loose-Fish is a dogma which Melville depicts the lives of men and women who may or may not be extravagant, yet they all have conflicts that separate them into one of two categories either a "fast fish" or a "loose fish". A Loose-Fish is described as a fair game, and a Fast-Fish is portrayed as being possessed by the person or persons who is chasing after it (576). Melville also writes "But if the doctrine of Fast-Fish be generally applicable, the kindred doctrine of Loose-Fish is still more widely so. That is internationally and universally applicable." (576). The popularity of the Loose-Fish description is shown in this quote. People of Melville's generation were of "fair game" more than those being "chased after" or "pursued". Melville also links America to a Loose-Fish, when in 14, "Columbus struck the Spanish Standard by way of waifing it for his royal master and mistress…" (576). He then connects "the rights of man and the Liberties of the World…men's minds and opinions…the principles of religious belief…"(576) to Loose-Fish. There are many examples of Loose-Fish written in Moby Dick; this is only a selected few. The repetitiveness of the Loose-Fish pieces together the puzzle of the tone and theme of Moby Dick. As Melville uses the many metaphors, the tone and theme is expressed through pedantic expressions in Loose-Fish Fast-Fish references, in addition to a frequent use of allusions when referring to the application of this principle to life.

The meaning and purpose of the passage contributes to the tone and theme of Moby Dick as a novel itself. The doctrine of Loose-Fish Fast Fish is quoted when referring to actual fish, as well as when comparing numerous characteristics of humanity "A Fast-Fish belongs to the party fast to it…A Loose-Fish is fair game for anybody who can soonest catch it." (576). In Moby Dick, Melville describes Loose-Fish as fair game, yet he also portrays Fast-Fish as a sort of wanted prize, that has to be sought after and fought for. Life is represented as a journey and the habitants of Earth are the Fast-Fish along with the Loose-Fish. Moby Dick contains many prophecies that were fulfilled in present times. Two examples of this are when Ishmael spots the following bill "Grand Contested Election for the Presidency of the United States…Bloody Battle in Afghanistan." (7). The prophesy regarding the contested election was fulfilled in present times when the voting deadlock existed between President George Bush and presidential candidate Al Gore, in the year 000. One year later, the second prophecy was fulfilled when a terrorist group from Afghanistan consequently decided to take over four American airplanes, with passengers aboard, and steer them into the Pentagon, Twin Towers of New York, and the believed White House. Finally, a prophesy may be present regarding the United States and Mexico "What at last will Mexico be to the United States…Loose-Fish." (576). This prophecy's meaning is not fully transparent, but Melville may have provided a window to see the future for America. With his success in prophesying the events over the last couple of years, he may once again astonish readers with his insight into the future. This prophecy could not be a prophecy at all; but only time can tell.

To enhance the tone and theme of the novel, Moby Dick, Herman Melville includes logical meanings of the selected passage, along with recurring images and motifs. Melville's deep commentary aids the reader in applying the adventurous story of Moby Dick to his or her own personal life. The doctrine of the Loose-Fish Fast-Fish is both intellectually deep as well as understandable for the common man.
