Was Hamlet insane, or only pretending? That is the question. In this play Shakespeare leads Hamlet through a variety of circumstances. Some instances yielding him to a more delusional state, and some instances into a revengeful state. Hamlet, put through a whirlwind of emotions, was faced with the question himself if he was insane. When Hamlet's father died he was distraught, but when his uncle married his mother he became very bitter. Then to see his father's ghost will fill Hamlet with so many issues; that he will have to figure out how to resolve each one. When his girlfriend Ophelia notices that something is bothering Hamlet she tries to ask him; but Hamlet, being unsure about what he is going to do tries to elude the question by acting a little off the wall. This may be because all of the current events in his life have made him uneasy, but I believe he does not want Ophelia to become involved.

After a while he begins to act like he was doing to Ophelia but to everyone. So people began to think something is really bothering Hamlet. Whenever Hamlet talked to his friend he was always speaking and acting clear as day. Hamlet also begins to construct a play precise enough to get his uncle enraged enough to confess his quilt in killing Hamlet's father. During this time he also takes out some of his anger on his mom because she was so quick to marry his uncle after her husband's death. Later on in the story Hamlet is visited by his father's ghost and is told not to take out his anger on his mother, and at this same time his father also displays his doubts in Hamlet's inability to take action.

Hamlet realizes that he is going to have to revenge his father and kill his uncle, but he realizes he will have to carefully construct a plan so that everyone will approve of his father's death. Hamlet gets a chance in a confessional booth to kill his uncle but decides that if he kills his uncle while he is confessing; because his uncle might go to heaven. In the next scene however, Hamlet thinks it is his uncle in the curtains when he is talking to his mother, and so he stabs the person who he thought was his uncle but happened to be Polonius. A strange thing happens next when Hamlet was questioned about where Polonius is he picks a little fun at Polonius's death. So Hamlet goes to England and on his way to England he switches the letter Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are carrying for Hamlet's uncle, which has instructions to kill Hamlet. He replaces it with a letter telling the king of England to kill Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern where two of his old school buddies. I believe Hamlet no longer regarded them as his friends, because they were spying on him for his uncle's sake. I believe he was then clearly justified when he sent Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their death.

Eventually Hamlet does come up with the strength to kill his uncle. This happens only after his mother was accidentally poisoned by her new husband. If he was already crazy I would have thought that he would have killed his uncle earlier for his father's sake. When everyone saw that the king killed the queen Hamlet knew he had a clear right to kill his murderous Uncle. So it was not so much that he was not sane enough to handle killing him, but that he wanted people to justify his right to vengeance. I believe though, at times throughout the play when he appeared crazy he was just mentally distraught by all the recent events in his life.
