Socrates

Socrates was a mysterious and significant figure in the history of philosophy. He lived between 46 and B.C., was the son of a mason and was a stonecutter by trade. Except for periods of military service abroad, Socrates lived all of his life in Athens.

Socrates was well-known in the streets and marketplaces of Athens. He spent the majority of his time striking up philosophical and ethical discussions with men and women on topics such as love, politics, war, friendship, poetry, religion, science, and moral issues. In doing this, Socrates became a respected teacher of philosophy by simply drifting around the city with his students and asking questions of them and strangers. His sophist teaching style trained the young and old the art of arguing and asking questions; which, in turn, forced them to draw their own conclusions and question the conclusions that they drew. Socrates did not have a formal classroom and refused any pay for his teachings.

Socrates believed and taught his students that every person is full knowledge and the ultimate truth was contained within their soul, which only needed to be brought to a level of conscious awareness. He also believed that a persons knowledge was inborn and not gained from experience. Therefore, he felt his job, as a philosopher was to provoke people into thinking for themselves, rather than to teach them anything they did not already know. He stressed to his students the need for analytical examination of ones beliefs, for clear definitions of basic concepts and for a rational and critical approach to ethical problems. Socrates considered the soul as an individuals intelligence and ethical character.

Socrates also believed that the chief cause of evil that men do was from ignorance. He believed that through the proper development of the mind through the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness that the goal and purpose of human life could be achieved. Socrates also regarded popular opinion as lack of knowledge and was very critical of government. He felt that people who were chosen to govern the state should possess both intellectual and moral qualifications.

Tragically, in B.C., Socrates was accused of corrupting the youth of Athens and for publicly rejecting the Greek gods. He was convicted by a jury and sentenced to death. Friends of Socrates had planned for his escape from jail, but Socrates refused and up until the day he drank a poison cup of hemlock, he spent his final days discussing philosophy with those who would listen. Today, the only way we know that Socrates existed, because he never wrote anything down, was through some of his students' famous and well-known writings.

It is unclear whether everyone Socrates conversed with while he was alive benefited from his philosophy. It is clear, however, Socrates did change philosophy, and the way people think. He invented new ideas and new methods of teaching. Socrates died for his values, principles, and morals, which our society today, could benefit from his long-a-go teachings.
