In Christina Rosetti's " Goblin Market" Rossetti examines a young girls curiosity with the unknown along with the danger and consequences of feeding into that curiosity.

With the beginning of "Goblin Market" establishes the lure of temptation, as we are greeted with "Plump unpecked cherries" and "Bloom-down-cheeked peaches" This can be paralleled to that of Eve and the forbidden fruit in the Garden. Initially Laura states that "We must not look at goblin men/ We must not buy their fruits" just as Eve initially states that "Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it". However when Laura sees the luscious fruit and Eve sees that the tree is pleasant to the eyes both forget their initial resistance to the temptation. As both of these women partake of their respective "fruits", the consequences for both women is .a lost of innocence. While Eve is banished from Eden, Laura's punishment for her loss of innocence is to become "sick". In this respect Rossetti parallels Laura's downfall with that of Jeanie, who also "ate the goblins fruits" and eventually died. It should also be noted that Jeanie should have been a bride, however, once she has experienced the incomparable fruit of the goblins and lost her innocence, she can no longer be the virginal maid and therefore can no longer be a "bride". At first it appears that Laura may experience the same fate. On eof the most obvious losses of innocence can be seen in the colour change of Laura's hair. Her hair, which had been so symbolically gold and bright in the early part of the poem, is now "grey", symbolizing that innocence has been lost and Laura must now live the life of an older depressed woman

Laura's decision to taste the fruit can also be viewed through the window of male temptation and the promise of good things in exchange for young girls freedom to live her life freely. The vivid images of "ripe berries and plum cherries" symbolize false security with and endless cash flow. In many societies women tend to succumb to the promise of a "sweet" life without evaluating what the price of that life. This can even be paralleled to young girls and the seemingly exponential increase of teen pregnancies. With these young ladies the promise of endless love and complete satisfaction much like "bright-fire berries and figs to fill you mouth, sweet to taste and sound to eye", seem to appease to a young girls dreams and fantasies.

There are many interpretations of what the actual " Goblin Market" is suppose to symbolize, however the most important moral to obtain form this poem is that temptation in whatever form, can undermine a persons plan for the future.
