A young boy fantasizes over the sister of his friend "Mangan", who lives in his neighborhood. Her images pursue him while he prays, studies, and daydreams. One day, he actually encounters Mangans sister, in an abandoned house owned by a priest. She asks whether he plans to go to the bazaar (Araby) on Saturday night. She herself would love to go, (85) but cannot, because she must attend a retreat at the convent. This is the boys big chance to impress her as he promises to bring her a gift from the bazaar. On Saturday evening he waits for his uncle to return home for dinner, and give him some money. The uncle doesnt arrive until nine oclock, and the boy leaves late for the bazaar.
