An Inspector Calls
"If we were all responsible for everything that happened to everybody we'd had anything to do with, it would be very awkward, wouldn't it?"
John Boynton Priestley was born in the Northern English town of Bradford in 184, worked in a local wool farm, but soon writing writing poetry and stories became his main occupation. Priestley went to fight in France in 114 during the First World War before he went to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, to study modern history and political science.
In 144/45 he wrote An Inspector Calls, but failed to find a suitable theatre in London. Priestley decided to send his script to Moscow, where the play was met with enthusiasm by two theatre companies. After the success in Moscow the play opened at the New Theatre in London in the following year and is still a success to this day.

An Inspector Calls was written in the aftermath of World War II and yet set in the years immediately proceeding World War I, in the imaginary city of Brumley. The play begins with the engagement party of Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft (son of a prosperous businessman). In the middle of these celebrations and very unexpectedly comes an inspector, a dark mysterious man going by the name of Inspector Goole. After speaking a few words with Mr Birling, Goole suddenly announces the quite graphic death of a young lady named Eva Smith. After seeing Eric's obvious shock and discomfort at hearing the news of the suicide, we see Mr Birling take a defensive stance, a theme we see Mr Birling take on frequently throughout the play. Even after seeing how he could have been responsible for Eva's death Mr Birling refuses to take any responsibility stating, 'still, I can't accept any responsibility'.
