An account of the Puritan minister John Williams and his family, who were taken prisoner in a raid by a party of French and Indians on a Massachusetts village in 1704, during Queen Annes War. Williams was eventually released by the French; however his wife and several of his children died while in captivity. The unredeemed captive of the title was his daughter Eunice, who converted to Roman Catholicism, married an Indian, and lived the rest of her life in Canada. John Demos explores the details of this story and interprets its meaning for 18th-century English-Americans.

This is an extraordinary story, a vindication of the narrative mode in history. It tells of a woman who lived at once in three different worlds New England calvinist, French Canadian catholic and Native American. A brief summary would make it sound like a bodice-ripping yarn which it most definately is not. At the heart of the story is the mystery of the girl herself, who chose to embrace the tribe which had killed her mother and abducted her, and the family which could not bear to believe that they had lost her to catholicism and savagery. Please read it. This must be made into a film.

Taking a Risk
Teenagers rebel against their parents for various reasons. Often times, the reason for the rebellion may have to do with wanting more attention from their parents; other times it could just mean having some adolescent fun. In my case, I just wanted to have some fun. I made a poor judgment and acted selfishly. Generally, every teenager is excited to go out and be independent at a young age. I wanted to express my independence by driving a car.
When I was sixteen, I received my drivers permit. Although the law states that the vehicle operator must have the correct supervision at all times, and until they receive their drivers license, I chose to disobey this law and drive alone.
Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Essay about growing up
One night, when I was feeling rebellious, I made the mistake of taking out my mothers brand new car for a test drive. I wanted to meet up with some friends but did not have a ride to get there. It had gotten late and soon everyone in my house had went to bed. I made the choice to take my mothers car keys and drive to where my friends were. With my unfortunate luck, the weather took a turn for the worse and it started to rain while I was driving to my friends house. Given that I didn't have the experience needed to drive a car and the fact that my mother had just bought the car, I wasn't too familiar with how it handled the road, or how to work its dashboard controls.
The rain had started to pick up and I couldn't find the switch for the windshield wipers. I panicked, but I thought fast and pulled over. I examined the car and found the switch for the wipers. I realized that my car ride had taken a little bit longer than usual. Typically, depending on traffic, it would take me about ten minutes to get to her house when I drove with someone else. The careless driver that I was, I had taken a wrong turn and ended up getting pretty lost. Luckily, I had my cell phone in my purse and I gave my friend a call. She explained how to get back to her house from the direction I was coming from. By this time, I had gotten restless and didn't even want to go to my friends house, but fortunately, I finally had reached her house and I went upstairs. I hung out for a couple of hours and soon after that I wanted to go home. Already I had a bad trip to her house and the weather hadn't cleared up so I was anxious to get home.
On the way home, I saw that the light for the gas tank was on. It showed that my gas was low and that I had, according to the drivers manual, 5 miles left to drive before I ran out of gas. I had a bad feeling about this earlier, and this just topped it off. I knew I should have checked the gas gauge before I decided to go for a drive. I suppose my mother was waiting until morning to fill the gas tank and she just left a little bit of gas in the tank to get her to the gas station. My heart was beating and I became a nervous wreck. At this time of night, I knew there were no gas stations open. I just crossed my fingers and prayed that I would make it home. I was hoping that nothing had caused my parents to wake up and find out that I wasn't there. I ran upstairs, went to my room and went to bed.
That night I could have gotten into a lot of trouble, but luckily for me, I got away with it. I think that that night made me realize that I still need time to mature and that I need to learn to follow the rules and obey the laws. Now I believe that everything has its time and place and we should all be patient and wait. I was lucky that I didn't get into trouble with the cops and got home safely without any accidents. It is something that is much too risky to ever do again, so I can honestly say, I learned my lesson, and I never drove again by myself until I received my actual driver's license.

Close-up or macro photography is another aspect of photography. It makes your subject appear larger than life, and it lets you see the finer details you would otherwise miss in the subject.
Macro photography is not about shoving your camera up close to your subject and start clicking. It requires a lot of technical knowledge and skills, as any good photographer will tell you.

For those keen to try their hand at macro photography, here are some tips and tricks to help you
1. Choose your subject
Any thing can be used in macro photography, but some things just make more interesting subjects because of their shape, design, geometric form and bright colour. Some examples of such objects are flowers, leaves with dewdrops on them, fruits (cut or uncut), seashells, stamps, and any decorative items made of natural wood, bamboo or stone.
. Use a tripod
When photographing a subject at extremely close range, its better to mount your camera on a sturdy tripod instead of holding it in your hands. This is to prevent the camera from shaking especially during the long exposures and high magnification that is common in close-up photography.
. Close-up filter
If the camera does not have a macro mode or if the macro mode is insufficient for your needs, get an additional close-up filter. These filters normally come in +1, +, + and +4 magnification levels and are fixed to the front of the camera lens.
4. Depth of field
When shooting an object at close range, the main point of focus may be very sharp but the foreground and background of the main focus will be blurred. To eliminate this problem, adjust the aperture to a smaller number to increase the depth of field. Make sure, too, that the entire subject is perpendicular to the lens. Otherwise, you could easily end up with one end of the subject in focus and the other blurred.
Lens not perpendicular to subject
Lens perpendicular to subject
However, if you want the subject to stand out from the background, a wider aperture such as f8 will do the trick. This technique is especially applicable for photographing flowers at close range, or a moving object.
5. Colour contrast
Creating colour contrast is another way of making the subject stand out from its background. For example, having the subject dressed in white against a black background, or placing a bright orange object against a dark blue background would make interesting colour contrast in the picture.
6. Negative space (the space surrounding the subject)
Another way to create contrast between the subject and its background is to use negative space to bring out an interesting subject. Be adventurous, attempt shooting the subject from different angles to get a good negative space.
7. Creative compositions
If you do not want your pictures to turn out looking posed or monotonous, do not always place the subject in the center of the focus. Try to photograph the subject from different angles, directions and viewpoints. Dare to be creative - try making vertical, horizontal, diagonal and even asymmetrical compositions of the same subject.
8. Lighting
Photographing a subject at very close range can sometimes cast a shadow over the subject. Macro photography requires a dedicated macro ring flash - an O shaped flash that attaches to the front of the lens - that throws uniform light on the subject. However, these flashes tend to be pretty expensive. Alternatively, you can use the normal flash, but position it away from the camera so that there is adequate light to illuminate the subject.
. Final touch
Touch up on your digital images using imaging editing software like the Adobe PhotoShop. Then enlarge your close-up picture, print it and frame it. Hang it up on your walls to remind you of your photographic achievement

It seemed like it would make her die, just speaking it. So I didn't tell anyone, not even my best friends. At school I would slip into a fantastical dreamland, nobody there knew that I should be troubled, pensive. I put on my best front and paraded around the school halls with some sort of smile plastered on my face. At lunchtime I'd stare at my food thinking that my friends should know. I thought of a million different ways to tell them. Each time that I came close to telling them, I would think about their potential reactions. There would be the normal lunchtime banter going on, complaints about the ranch dressing, and I would blurt out, Hey guys, my mom has breast cancer. The whole cafeteria would turn silent and the plastic forks would drop from their hands, making a sad little clinking noise. Then I would stare at my food mentally kicking myself for having opened my mouth. I chose to say nothing. I remember very clearly the day that I went to go sit with her while she got her chemotherapy. I only did this once because it was too hard for me. I walked down an overly-lit sterile hallway trailing behind my dad. When we reached her room I wished that I could just keep walking, pretend I hadn't seen her. I went in and sat down. Her shirt was partially unbuttoned so that the IV could be inserted into the porto-cath surgically implanted under her collarbone. She was hooked up to three different kinds of poisons, and one normal IV. There were some knitting things spread across her lap and the ever present bag of lemon drops was faithfully at her side. Her head was laid back in the chair, she was tired. She and my dad tried to involve me in some nice chit-chat, I met and shook hands with the doctors and nurses, It's nice to meet you Dr. McCoy. Yeah right. I wiped away my forming tears and gave myself a mental pep talk to be happy. As long as I didn't look at her tired eyes I was OK. Half an hour later, she was done and we got to go home. I stayed alone in my room that night. Out of courtesy to my mom and fear that my friends would find out, I didn't have them over to the house for a long time. I didn't want them to notice anything, like the bottles of medicine all lined up at my mom's place at the table. Each pill a tiny soldier waging war on my mother's body. There were always huge quantities of lemons in the refrigerator. A friend would come over, Hey Mike, why so many lemons? It's the middle of winter! I couldn't risk having to explain to them that the taste of lemons made my mom less nauseous. The ceiling of the bathroom had hair on it. She tried so hard to camouflage her hair loss by blow drying her hair for over half an hour every morning. She would turn her head upside down, use some hairspray, then blow dry, then more hairspray and more blow drying. I don't think she realized her effect on the ceiling. Eight months after she had discovered the tumor, she was done with treatment. Eventually her hair began to grow back in. I really grew up during those eight long months of fixing the family dinners, trying to be strong for her and trying to take over certain aspects of her role as mom when she couldn't. I think that while hard to endure, her cancer has been good for the family. It pulled us all together when we needed to be strong. Today I think that all of us treasure more the moments that we have together. Instead of putting my feet down and complaining, I look forward to every Saturday that my mom and I go do chores together. After school some days I drive half an hour to go visit her in her office so she's not lonely, and sometimes I bring a bag of lemon drops, our favorite candy.

During the first verse John Clare experienced two physical reactions when he saw this lady for the first time, and they were that his face turned pale and his legs refused to walk away. We soon learn that John Clare is inexperienced in love because of the title and he also says
"I ne'er was struck before that hour."
And
"My heart has left its dwelling place".
Order Custom compare and contrast the theme of love in the poems "first ice" and "first love" paper
The second verse of this poem
"And then my blood rushed to my face
And took my sight away."
This tells us that his face went red with embarrassment and shows that he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"The trees and bushes round the place
Seemed midnight at noonday.
I could not see a single thing,
Words from my eyes did start;
They spoke as chords do from the string,
And blood burnt round my heart."
Begins to describe the reactions, which occurred to him next, which were that blood rushed to his face and took his sight away. The verse then goes on to describe what he could see. When he says
"Words from my eyes did start."
He means that even though he couldn't speak at the time, his eyes showed how much he liked her.
The third verse of this poem;
"Are flowers the winters choice?
Is loves bed always snow?
She seemed to hear my silent voice
And loves appeal to know."
Also shows a sign of his inexperience because he is asking questions. We are also told in this verse that the lady has noticed John Clare and knows what he is feeling
"She seemed to hear my silent voice
And loves appeal to know."
Verse four of this poem
"I never saw so sweet a face
As that I stood before
My heart has left its dwelling place
And can return no more."
Means that he has never seen such a great looking lady as the lady, which he stood before. This verse also goes on to explain that he dedicates his heart to this one woman, and he will never love anybody as much as he loves her.
The mood of the poem is very romantic. The rhythm is fairly slow. The rhyme is consistent as every other line rhymes. This is unlike the structure although there is a pattern as the first and second verses consist of eight lines each, the third and fourth verses both consist of four lines each.
The main differences between the poems are that "First Love" is a positive example of love and "First Ice" is a negative example. This means that the first poem talks about the bad sides of being in love and the second poem talks about the good sides of being in love. "First Love" is about the happiness that can be made and "First Ice" is about the sadness that can come out of a relationship. The images of "First Love" give a warmer impression than "First Ice".
The similarities of both poems are that both of them are obviously about love and they are both set outdoors where the weather is used to reflect the mood. The weather is used to reflect the mood because the weather and the mood create a cold impression towards the readers.
I prefer the poem "First Love" because it has a much happier, warmer attitude than "First Ice". Although some of the words and ideas in this poem are very romantic and exaggerated, I still find it more enjoyable, partly because it rhymes. As far as I know the lady didn't reject John Clare but I think we are led to believe that she did as he says
"My heart has left its dwelling place
And can return no more."
