Themes Developed by Archetypal Characters in The MatrixThroughout the film The Matrix, archetypal characters play a fundamental role in portraying the film's chief messages. Cypher, the trickster, displays the idea of appearance not being what it seems, while Morpheus communicates the theme of battling for what one believes in and acts as the father to Neo. The hero, Neo, exposes the topic of the quest for self-discovery. The film's main messages of appearance versus reality, struggling for one's ideals, and the quest for self-enlightenment are respectively established through the archetypal characters of Cypher the trickster, Morpheus the father, and Neo the hero.
Cypher emulates the role of the trickster in the film. The name Cypher refers to the word "cipher", which means, "to put in secret writing or encode"; this name suits him because he deceives the rebels into believing that he is on the good side when in fact he is working for the agents. The first example of this occurs at the beginning of the movie when Trinity asks Cypher "Are you sure this line is clean?" and Cypher lies by replying "Yeah, course I'm sure" (Wachowski). After doing this, Trinity almost gets slaughtered by the agents. This demonstrates that Cypher is not an assistant to the rebels, but a helper to the agents. Subsequently, he drops his cellular telephone into a garbage can with the intention that the agents will be able to trace the rebels' exit point, annihilate Neo, and capture Morpheus. This shows that he is no longer loyal to the rebels and has other objectives in mind. Finally, after leaving the matrix earlier than the rebels from a telephone booth, Cypher murders Switch, Apoc, and Dozer, but is unable to kill Tank. This co-worker of the rebels has now been discovered to be a vile defrauder. The insurgents were unable to conceive that Cypher was working for the agents, are betrayed by him and discover their misconception of Cypher's morals.

Cypher was unable to eradicate Neo because of the father figure Neo had in Morpheus. According to Dictionary.com, a father is "a man who begets or raises or nurtures a child". Morpheus flaunts his plethoric courage as a caretaker of Neo by risking his own life and the lives of the other mutineers in order to prevent the surmise of Neo at the virulent hands of the agents. Furthermore, Morpheus depicts his father-like character when he dares being heard by the agents and tries to reach the operator, Tank. Morpheus utters "give me your phone" and Trinity responds "they'll be able to track it". Morpheus states "we have no choice" (Wachowski). In this example, Morpheus is implying that in order to salvage the life of Neo, the rebels must risk being sought out by the agents because Neo is the chosen one and he must remain animate. Moreover, Morpheus gambles his life by jumping through the wall to battle an agent so that Trinity can escort Neo back to the real world. Morpheus declares "take him Trinity, he is the one" (Wachowski). Morpheus believes so blindly that Neo is the one that he sacrifices his own life to preserve the vitality of Neo and the other revolutionaries. Thirdly, when the sentinels are attacking the Nebuchadnezzar, the rebels' hovercraft, Morpheus delays using the Electro Magnetic Pulse because he strongly believes that Neo will return safely. Trinity says "you can't use that until Neo is out" and Morpheus replies "I know. Don't worry, he'll make it" (Wachowski). By jeopardizing the lives of Trinity, Tank, and himself, Morpheus's faith in Neo being the one is illustrated. For that reason, Morpheus battles assiduously for his ideal that Neo is the chosen one.
Morpheus nurtures Neo, the hero, who is on a quest to ascertain self-enlightenment and self-knowledge. To illuminate this, Morpheus tells Neo that he is the one and provides him with information on what the one is.
When the Matrix was first built there was a man born inside that had the ability to change what he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit. It was this man that freed the first of us and taught us the secret of the war; control the Matrix and you control the future. When he died, the Oracle at the temple of Zion prophesied his return and envisioned an end to the war and freedom for our people. That is why there are those of us that have spent our entire lives searching the Matrix, looking for him. I did what I did [freed your mind], because I believe we have been brought here [the real world] for a reason, Neo. You are here to serve a purpose, just as I am here to serve mine (Wachowski).
This information helps Neo understand what the selected one is and why Morpheus believes he is it. It also aids Neo in discerning what his purpose is in the real world. Secondly, Neo visits the Oracle so that she can point him on his course towards self-enlightenment. She shows him a quote on the wall in Latin; when translated into English, the Oracle says it reads "Know thyself" (Wachowski). This helps Neo understand that he must believe that he is the one in order for the prophecy to be fulfilled. Finally, in the final moments of the film, Neo achieves self-enlightenment and self-knowledge. He is able to halt bullets and view the coding of the matrix because he is the one. At this point in time he realizes he has achieved self-enlightenment and believes he is the chosen one.
The film's focal messages of appearance versus reality, crusading for one's ideals, and the quest for self-knowledge are respectively verified through the archetypal characters of Cypher the trickster, Morpheus the father, and Neo the hero. The trickster, Cypher, was unable to achieve his goal of being reinstated into the matrix. Morpheus, the father, discovers the one in Neo just as the Oracle had prophesied and lastly Neo, the one and the hero, concludes his journey to acquire self-enlightenment and self-knowledge. Hopefully Neo will be able to use his powers to emancipate human slaves from the hands of artificial intelligence and retake the world that humans once called home.

I really don?t think that there is one main character that the story revolves around. There are four main characters that the story revolves around they are Lucy, Peter, Susan, and Edmund. They are what make the story happen. Lucy is a young the youngest of the four, she is what makes the adventure start. She tells the rest of the characters of Narnia but no one believes her. Edmund her brother just likes making fun of her and he is the second of the four to find the place of Narnia. Susan and Peter find out about Narnia with the other two at the same time. Peter is like the leader of the four being the oldest. They react differently in different parts of the book. The two characters that remind me of anybody are Lucy and Edmund. Lucy reminds me of my sister. My sister usually says things but nobody think she is telling the truth but at the end she really is. Edmund reminds me of my brother because my brother likes to pick on my sister when she seems wrong or just for any reason just so that he can feel older.
The setting of ?The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,? is a magical place inside of wardrobe called in a place Narnia. At first Narnia is a place that is fully covered with snow because the White Witch has made it that way. Later Narnia Starts to change and the snow starts to disappear because King Aslan changes it. I believe that it is really important that the book took place in this setting. Without the magical place I don?t think that he story would exist because the kids would have been home playing hide and seek. The adventure takes place because of this magical place of Narnia, without it the story would have been probably different.
The story is about some kids that find this magical place. They are there to help a Faun that helped on of the characters, Lucy, in the beginning. A witch in this place has turned the Faun into stone and the four kid characters are trying to rescue him. The story then has a couple of different things happen while in the search of the Faun. At the end the four kids turn out to be kings and queens, and actually save a whole country from the evil witch. I think that the thing that the author is saying about life is that nothing is easy but at the end you are the one who triumphs. Like the kid had to work hard to help the people of Narnia at the end they would up being Kings and Queens.
The plot of the story is that an evil witch has is trying to kill one of the four kids and prevent him from getting to his throne. When the kids get to the throne all the evil should be vanished and she doesn?t want that. I think that a meaningful scene in the book is when all the evil people are fighting with the good people of Narnia. In this part one of the characters Billy is fighting with the witch with his sword. Both evil and good are battling and good is loosing until Aslan came back to help. This scene was good it had some action and adventure to it.

I think that the narrator of the story is the writer of the book. I guess this is significant because he tells the story like if he where there to experience what happened to the four kids. At least he makes you think that he was there. When you read the story it feels so real but its actually fake.
I think that the book was a pretty good book. I think its good because I like fictional books and this book was fictional. I also like it because it had a sense of magic in it. Like the place Narnia seems magical with the type of people it has a witch, kings and queens, fauns, and animals that talk. I think that I would recommend this book to someone. Its a pretty simple book to read so I would recommend it to my little sister she likes reading books that are like fairy tales. I believe that the author did succeed in what he was trying to do. What he is trying to do in my opinion is think out of the normal. Like think outside of the normal and make you realize that there can be different things out there that we don?t know about.
1.The reason that Lucy insist in searching for Mr.Tumnus is because she feels as if it was her fault that the witch captured Mr.Tumnus for hiding her when she came the first time.
.The reason that the Witch is certain that Aslan will obey the Emperor?s law is she knows that the king will not let the kid Edmund die because he is the fourth person to sit on the thrones.
.The way that Lucy and Susan comfort the grieving lion is by crying on top of him, taking off the muzzle, and then removing the remains of the gnawed ropes.
4.The way that the scene of Aslan?s death changes when the sun rises is that the colors and shadows change. Also the Stone Table was broken into two pieces by a great crack that ran down it from end to end.
5.The way that Lucy saves Edmund from death is that she uses the cordial that was given to her as a Christmas present. The cordial is a healing tool.
6.The reason that Lucy and Susan refrain from telling Edmund about Aslan?s noble sacrifice is that they think that telling him will be awful news for him and would make him feel bad.
7.I think that the way that Edmund finds it difficult to lie to his brother and sisters is that he became Edmund the just. He changed into a graver and quieter man so I think that has something to do with him not lying.
8.I think that the way that Mrs. Macready?s response to the children contrast that of the Professor?s is that she seems not to care what the do. She just wants them out of their way but the professor on the other hand listens to them and understand what the kids are talking about.
.I think that the qualities that Lewis?s work inspire in the readers is to be brave and do what you believe is right the way that the characters did what was right to save the people of Narnia.
10.I think that the way that the conclusion of the book implies that God?s Kingdom will always show strife is that it tells readers that some of the evil peoples in the battle manage to escape. This lets you know that evil was not completely gone and the will be more fighting to get rid of them.

How Time Periods Affect Society
In the book, The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, society was all supposed to be the same. Individuality was not a lifestyle, or a way of life. The unique characters were looked down upon. In this time, people married and had relationships for social status and not for love. The relationships were strictly business, and if someone married below their social status they were looked down upon. This time was called the Victorian Period and existed between 187 and 101. (Lombardi) This period of time all revolved around the political career of Queen Victoria. Writers like Oscar Wilde spent time in custody for being unique. He was openly homosexual and strongly believed in individuality. Oscar Wilde and his writings affected few people in his time period, but readers can look back today and see how important individuality actually is.
After reading a biography on Oscar Wilde's life, one would realize that his life began and continued to compare to those of the upper classes. He had an easy life growing up and going through school, but once he started to differ from society, his life became arduous.
After Oscar received a great education from oxford, he set out to be a writer. After a slow start, he gradually was noticed. After his great success, his son turned his

back on his father, Oscar, and that started his downfall. The downfall was due to England's strict penal code. Oscar's son, Lord Alfred Douglas, referred to Wilde as a homosexual in public. This sentenced Wilde to be in jail for two years. He wrote as he was in jail, but lost interest, love, and respect from most readers, family, and friends. (Ellmann 1).
This biography showed that unique people such as homosexuals were strongly looked down upon and often punished.
During this time period, few authors and artists tried to get readers and observers to look deeper into their works of art. Some believed that books and arts can be compared to people, due to the fact that one can judge by the cover, or you can judge by who or what they are, what they believe in, and what they have accomplished. Oscar Wilde was on of those unique people that looked and judged art by the surface and on what is inside of the covers.
"All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their own peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their own peril," (Gray preface).
This quote by Dorian struck one as being very true. For example, if one is reading without thinking and without enthusiasm, they will miss a lot if not most of the story. Symbols are hidden within the text and requires to be searched for. People make this decision as soon as they open the book.
In the book, The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, there was talk of
homosexuality between Dorian and a few other characters. One can think that Dorian was symbolic of Oscar Wilde due to the fact of his homosexual tendencies, and his way of life. Most gays in this time period were ashamed of it. They would often hide their feelings because if they show them they would be punished or taken into custody. A character we know of having many past intimate times with Dorian was a character known as Alan Campbell. This character was now ashamed of it. He knows vital information about Dorian but could not tell, because Dorian would tell about their encounters.
"They had been great friends once, five years before-almost inseparable, indeed. Then the intimacy had come suddenly to an end. When they met in society now, it was only Dorian Gray that smiled Alan Campbell never did," (Gray 14).
This quote above was just stating that Alan was afraid to show his feelings in public.
Another thing that many people had mixed feelings of in society was marriage. Marriage was not as it is today. People would marry to gain land, power or social status in the Victorian Period. Now most of the marriages are for love and happiness. In the past people would marry and go off and live many different lives. For example, they would go off and have other relationships with other men and or women and would not feel guilty or would not be looked down upon. Often times married couples would laugh and joke about their other relationships with each other. The majority of
people in this time would do so.
"Dorian Gray falls in love with a beautiful girl who acts Juliet, and proposes to marry her. Why not? If he wedded Messalina he would be none the less interesting. You know I am not a champion of marriage. The real drawback to marriage is that it makes one unselfish. And unselfish people are colourless. They lack individuality. Still, there are certain temperaments that marriage makes more complex. They retain their egotism, and add to it many other egos. They are forced to have more than one life. They become more highly organized, and to be highly organized is, I should fancy, the object to mans existence. Besides, every experience is of value, and, whatever one may say against marriage, it is certainly inexperience. I hope that Dorian Gray will make this girl his wife, passionately adore her for six months, and then suddenly become fascinated with someone else. He would be a wonderful study," ( Gray 66).
The above quote was showing Lord Henry's view on marriage. This showed what he and other high class people think in this period. This also showed that marriage makes people live secret lives and makes them not always be aware of the consequences beforehand.
As a conclusion to this paper, one will stand by their opinions of this as from the beginning. Uniqueness is often credited today and not in the past. Marriages were
not for love like they are today. The few people that had suffered in this before us, are greatly thanked now and if not for them, we still may live like they had. Instead of looking down upon our lifestyles nowadays, we would be looking down upon the lifestyles of the Victorian Period. Without people like Oscar Wilde, we may have never changed our ways of life.

Through out the novel "The Stone Angel", Hagar's pride manifests itself in her apparent hatred of weakness, poor self-awareness and inability to love; however, because Laurence tells the story from Hagar's point of view, the reader sees that she does in fact feel compassion, humility and love, but restrains these feelings behind a stoic, unbending exterior. The progress of the novel is Hagar's progress toward the expression of these emotions.
Hagar is full of pride and fear from early childhood. At the age of six Hagar is already over whelmed with pride
"There was I, strutting the board sidewalk like a pint-sized peacock, resplendent, haughty, hoity-toity, Jason Currie's black-haired daughter" (pg 6)
Hagar has such vast thoughts about herself. She considers herself very stylish and
Custom writing service can write essays on The Stone Angel
appealing. When something doesn't go right Hagar becomes weak and full of fear.
As a young child Hagar believes that showing emotions is a sign of weakness. On one occasion Hagar tried to steal a handful of sultanas, but got caught by her father, who then whipped her with birch. Hagar was so proud and enraged that she didn't let her father see her tears
"I wouldn't let him see me cry, I was so enraged." (pg )
Hagar's attempts to hide her weaknesses began the process of her turning into stone - a process of which she was artificially proud of. Little by little Hagar becomes cold, proud and blind, the same as the stone angel monument. The key to understanding this process is to understand that it's driven by fear fear of the changes, fear of her weaknesses. Hagar always tries to hide herself from others and can never express her emotions publicly. When Hagar's brother is dying she demonstrates her pride driven fear. The pride was driven by the fear of resembling her mother, which she considered a "meek woman"
" But all I could think of was that meek woman I'd never seen, the woman Dan was said to resemble so much and from whom he'd inherited a frailty I could not help but detest how ever much a part of me wanted to sympathize. To play at being her-it was beyond me." (pg 5)
Hagar's pride prevents her from doing such a little favour for a dying brother. Hagar has a heart of stone. Hagar's pride also prevents her from expressing any love or compassion for her own mother. Hagar can never express her feelings in words, all she can do is cry, but as the novel progresses she can't even do that. Hagar is very similar to the Ancient Mariner. She carries her pride and fear like the Ancient Mariner who carries his Albatrass
"Ah! Well-a-day! What evil looks
Had I from old and young!
Instead of the cross, the Albatross
About my neck was hung."
The Ancient Mariner committed a sin, he killed the Albatross and his punishment is that he had to wear the Albatross around his neck. In the same way, Hagar wears her pride around her. Hagar's pride was like leprosy; it started from her childhood and spread through her entire life. The disease is very contagious and infected everyone that Hagar was around. Bram, John and Marvin are all victims of Hagar's contagious disease. Bram was affected by Hagar by losing his laughter, John turned bitter and Marvin didn't get enough attention as a little boy. Hagar started to get more and more miserable and slowly drove herself into a wilderness.
Hagar is slowly driven into a wilderness were she saw nothing but herself, she can't see Bram, and her two sons; only herself
"Pride was my wilderness, and the demon that lead me there was fear. I was alone, never anything else, and never free, for I carried my chains within me, and they spread out from me and shackled all I touched." (pg )
Hagar's wilderness is her trapped in stone. The reason that Hagar is in the wilderness is because of the fear she had in her heart. Hagar is always afraid of what people think of her. Another large motivator in her fear is her embarrassments. Hagar refers to her pride as chains that spread out from her and shackle all that she touched. As a mother Hagar doesn't give enough love and attention to her family as she should have. She is embarrassed by her husband, who did many discriminating things in the town. Hagar is also ashamed of they way that her children go to school. Hagar is also full of guilt;
the guilt for her dead husband and her son John
"Dead by your own hands or by mine?" (pg )
Hagar cannot accept the past and is very overwhelmed by everything that has happened. Through out the whole novel Hagar is trying to change the past. When she is walking around the nursing home she comes upon an old man. Hagar immediately thinks that man is Bram and is trying to figure out what to say to him
"So familiar he is that I cannot move nor speak nor breathe. How has he come here, by what mystery…If I speak to him, slowly, so as not to startle, will he turn to me with such a look of recognition that I hardly dare hope for it, and speak my name?" (pg 106)
It is very clear that Hagar wants to change the past and make up to Bram.
As we progress to the end of the novel we see that Hagar is slowly beginning to understand her mistakes. When Hagar is walking around the beach she sees a boy and girl playing, Hagar stops to watch them play. The girl and the boy are playing house, the boy tries to impress the girl by doing many different things. The girl keeps rejecting the boy and disagreeing with everything the boy says. Hagar becomes very concerned
"Stupid girl. She knows nothing. Why won't she praise him a little? She's so sharp with him. He'll become fed up in a minute. I long to warn her- watch out, watch out, you'll lose him." (pg 188)
Hagar is beginning to understand the mistakes she made as a mother. She has treated all her children and husband the same way without even knowing it. This is the first time that Hagar realizes her mistakes. Hagar's last days are very symbolic; the rain, the water and the rusty can full of water are all symbols of Hagar trying to find redemption. It is very difficult for Hagar. For Hagar to be totally free from her past and find redemption she needs to change. Knowing your mistakes is one thing but doing something about it is a whole different situation. Hagar can't change; even lying on her death bed she shows her stubbornness by not excepting water but drink.

Introduction
XYZ, Inc. has recognized the need to address the issue of drug and alcohol abuse in its corporate office and factories resulting into the creation of a six-month drug-free workplace plan. The plan will emphasize drug-free workplace education for employees and supervisor/management training. The Human Resources (HR) department plans to implement the program next month, track its progress, and see significant improvements in productivity and performance at the end of the six months.
Characteristics and Benchmarks of successful substance abuse treatment program
A successful drug-free education plan will give effective tools in identifying persons under the influence and resources to refer those who need help for their addiction. It must be clear and concise when addressing prohibited and illegal drugs in the workplace and consequences to their use. Also each employee, supervisor and manager must be properly trained for successful results of the plan.
One method to ensure everyone has the same information is by giving all current and new employees an Employee Drug-Free Workplace Handbook. This will explain the harms of drug/alcohol abuse, drug testing, consequences of positive results, community resources, etc. Supervisor/managers will also have to attend a "Drug-Free Workplace Seminar" held by the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
It also must have clear benchmarks in order to track its success. For example, Zitar wants to decrease absenteeism by %, increase productivity by 5.%, and increase EAP utilization by 1%. These and other benchmarks will help Zitar analyze whether the program is working and make the necessary revisions to ensure it does.
Supervisor/Management Training Plan
Drug and alcohol related problems are among the top reasons for the rise in workplace violence at XYZ, Inc. This is why it is so important for Zitar to equip its supervisors/managers with preventative tools to identify substance abuse users. They should lead by example and will be expected to comply with the Zitar's, Inc. Drug-Free Workplace Policy. Some key expectations for supervisors/managers
· Report to work drug-free and unimpaired by the use of alcohol.
· Inform the HR department when taking a lawfully prescribed controlled substance that the health care provider has stated could affect one's ability to perform the job safely.
· Report to the HR department any knowledge of a fellow employee who appears to under the influence of a substance abuse.
· Attend the supervisor training given by the EAP program as mentioned
· Notify the HR department immediately of any suspicious criminal drug activity occurring in the workplace.
The importance of drug-free workplace
Establishing and maintaining a drug-free workplace is important for a number of safety, economic, and employee morale reasons. As research indicates below
· Every year, more than 17,000 motor vehicle fatalities are attributed to alcohol use (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration press release, May 14).
· The majority (66.5) of current (past month) illicit drug users are adults working either full-time or part-time (1 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, SAMHSA).
· A study conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) found that in 1 alcohol and drug abuse cost the economy 45.7 billion (Substance Use and Mental Health Characteristics by Employment Status, SAMHSA).
· Drug use is greatest among employees in the construction, wholesale trade, and retail trade industries.
· Drug use in the workplace contributes significantly to administrative losses such as, absenteeism, tardiness, overtime pay, sick leave abuse, health insurance claims, disability payments, and costs associated with accidents.
· Drug users at a minimum consume almost twice the medical benefits as nonusers, and make more than twice as many workers' compensation claims.
As an employer, it is important to show employees that their safety and health on and off the job is important. Implementing a drug-free workplace policy is a way for employers to express support for the majority of employees who do not abuse drugs or alcohol.
Here are the benefits of why the management of XYZ, Inc. felt it necessary to have drug-free workplace
· Reduced employee discipline problems.
· Helps reduced absenteeism, tardiness, sick leave, and personal time off.
· Reduced on the job injuries, health insurance premiums, and workers' compensation costs.
· Improved employee morale and motivation.
· Increased productivity
· Improved customer satisfaction.
Conclusion
Zitar's expectation is proper training, implementation, and the adherence of this policy will result into it a safe and productive environment for everyone. References

What is the purpose of life? Is it to obtain wealth, fortune, or become famous? Or do the trivial things in life, occurring everyday, make life grand and give life its purpose? Thornton Wilder attempted to answer this very intricate question, a question which plays with each of our minds once in a while, through his play, Our Town. In Our Town, he exemplified his view of life and what it truly means by not only reflecting upon life, but also, death. Through death, we learn what life really is, and what life has to offer us. It is not the grand and fine things in life, but the minor everyday things in life that truly make life worth living. When speaking of Our Town he said, "It is an attempt to find value above all price, for the smallest events in our daily life."
Life is the period between one's birth and death. Most of us have a view of life in which it is more or less the same for everyone. A person is born. A person participates in the daily routine of school, family life and friends. A person finds love, gets married, grows old, and finally dies. Our Town follows this cycle of life. However, through this cycle, Thornton Wilder helps us to realize that life is not what we think or hope it's going to be. We might not grow old. We may never find true love or happiness, and we may never achieve any of the goals we set for ourselves. Wilder illustrates this through death. In the last act, we do not see a "grave yard" filled with only the elderly who died of natural causes. We see a group of people of all different ages, with all different goals, and with all different deaths. We see Wally Webb, who died as a boy from an appendicitis attack. We see dear Mrs. Gibbs, never being able to fulfill her dream of going to Paris, and, Mr.Stimson, who died by killing himself. Then we find that lovely Emily will be uniting with them as well. Death comes unexpectedly, and Wilder helps us to realize that we're not going to know when it's our time to go. However, when we do, we shouldn't have taken our life for granted. Wilder, through Our Town, revealed that we shouldn't "go about life as if you had a million years." We should take a hold on life, and should enjoy and partake in every moment.
In Our Town, Emily dies while giving birth to a child. This emphasizes the themes of life and death, and as death passes, new life is granted. Throughout the play, I believed Emily to be a rather fortunate young lady with a extensive life ahead of her. I believed she was living and would keep on continuing to live a life of great opportunity, with no misgivings, when she passed on. However, as she came into the third act of the play and joined the dead, I realized that all was not as I had thought. At first she believes that her life was grand and as great as it could be, and is anxious to relive a day in her life. However, when she is granted her request and relives her twelfth birthday, she becomes conscious and aware of all the trivial things that make life magnificent, that she let pass her by. She comes to realize that she did not appreciate her family and all the minor affairs, such as eating breakfast, and it begins to tear her apart inside. She notices how, that in a simple morning, she and her mother did not glance at each other once, and in an instance, all she ever knew seemed completely unethical and unimportant. Life itself had become pointless, and Emily returns to her grave. However, she does not leave without a good-bye to all the diminutive things in her life such as clocks, breakfast, and sunflowers that she had never noticed enough to appreciate. Upon Emily's return, she asks, "Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?-every, every minute?" Sadly, deep down she knows the answer is no and she is saddened by the ignorance and blindness she withheld while living, as well as the lack of knowledge humans still have throughout life.
Life is of great importance, for we only have one life to live. Therefore, in order to make life the best it can possibly be, we must understand life. Our Town is an influential book with a strong message that aids in the understanding of life. Thornton Wilder wanted us to open our eyes to the way we are living, and help us to appreciate every moment of our lives. Through Our Town, he attempted to give the world a new perspective on life. He emphasized the trivial events that occur everyday, and by illustrating death as an existence we want to enter with happiness, not remorse, he exemplified the fact that we should appreciate our lives and not take our lives for granted. Most often, we do not express the joy that comes with a simple, Good-morning, from our mothers, each morning as we awaken. We do not show all the sorrow that is felt when our friends are not there for us when we want them to be, and this is not what we should be doing. Our Town shows us that letting life pass in a monotonous motion, thinking that it is great, is not what life is about. It's about enjoying and being active in every second, in every minute, in every hour, in every day.
Order Custom Essay on Our Town: Life vs. Death
Death comes when we least expect it, and when it does arrive, we should posses no regrets. We should have partaken in everything possible, and lived life to its fullest. We, as humans, "know that something is eternal. And it ain't houses and it ain't names, and it ain't earth, and it ain't even the stars…everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings." Life, in a sense, continues and Thornton Wilder expressed this continuity of life in the third act of Our Town. However, this life is not the life we have come to know and live in. This life is a life of much deeper meaning and spirituality, and in order to live in this life, we must first understand and comprehend the life we used to live. This is what I believe the people in the graveyard are "waiting" for. They are waiting for their own interpretations of the life they lived to sink into their souls and change their regrets to happiness. They're waiting for that time when they realize that life on earth is just the beginning, and living keeps going on. At times life can be rough and can lead to sorrow, but only tha activeness and appreciation of the life we live on earth, can lead to something, that something, which is even greater.
