A Comparison of a Tragic Hero from Euripides's Medea and Aeschylus's Agamemnon
Tragic heroes from Greek tragedies almost always share similar characteristics.
Medea from Euripides's play Medea and Clytemnestra from Aeschylus's play
Agamemnon display and share traits common to a tragic hero. They both have a
flaw, hold a high rank or have an extraordinary ability, seek vengeance, and cause their
own downfall anothers suffering. All of these traits are displayed clearly in these
characters and are shown in the textual support.
Both Medea and Clytemnestra had detrimental flaws. Medea was a very
passionate women with a tendency to become easily angered. Her anger from being
wronged by Jason is shown when she wishes "...Jason and his bride/Ground to pieces in
their shattered palace/For the wrong they have declared to do..."(Euripides 6).
Clytemnestras flaw was that she could not see past her own grief, anger, and how her
husband had killed their daughter. Her anger and grief are displayed by her emotional
words, "Like a swan she wailed her last call for her loved one while she
drowned."(Aeschylus). Both of their flaws were indeed tragic, but more to others than
themselves.
Almost all characters from Greek tragedies have some sort of rank or ability,
Medea and Clytemnestra were no exception. Medea was not only a sorceress, but also a
respected citizen. Medea's magic skills are portrayed in the play when she makes a
magical powder that is meant to kill the king daughter. Clytemnestra has no special
ability per say, but she had ruled Argos for ten years in her husbands absence. These
characters ranks and abilities were part of their conflict.
Medea and Clytemnestra both seek revenge for wrongs done to them by thier
husbands. Medea trys to make Jason's life as miserable as possible for everything he did
to her. She kills the most important to him including his new wife and her father. She
even goes as far as to kill her own children to punish him. Her plan of revenge is laid out
as she says, "...I shall make corpses of three of my enemies, father and daughter, and my
own husband."(Euripides 1). Clytemnestra seeks revenge on her husband because he
murdered their daughter as well as took a new wife. Clytemnestra's revenge is very
secretive because she hopes to surprise her husband and catch him off guard. She
explains to Agamemnon the reason for her revenge, "For thy child's absence then/Such
mine excuse, no wily afterthought...No drop is left to shed."(Aeschylus 0). Their
vengeance lost its sweetness when it led to their own pain and suffering as well as their
victims.
After getting their revenge Medea and Clytemnestra become miserable and lead
to their own downfalls and the suffering of others. Medea's life becomes miserable after
she kills her own children and when she realizes she will never know love again. She is
also devastated after being exiled from her home city. Her pain and suffering are made
known when she says, "But I.....but this is an unexpected blow which has befallen me and
has broken my heart."(Euripides). Clytemnestra does not suffer herself in this play but
will later be killed by her son in a later play. Until then she is responsible of causing the
city and her son to suffer immensely.
These two characters are perfect examples of tragic heroes and their traits. Not
only are Medea and Clytemnestra perfect examples, but they are some of the best and
easily seen examples. They follow every step that is found in most Greek tragedies to
cause some sort of conflict and create the drama.

"Too, he wondered why he did not feel some keen agony of fear cutting his sense like a knife. He wondered at this because human expression had said loudly for centuries that men should feel afraid of certain things and that all men who did not feel this fear were phenomena, heroes.
He was then a hero. He suffered that disappointment which we would all have if we discovered that we were ourselves capable of those deeds which we most admire in history and legend. This, then, was a hero. After all, heroes were not much.
No, it could not be true. He was not a hero. Heroes had no shames in their lives and, as for him, he remembered borrowing fifteen dollars from a friend and promising to pay it back the next day, and then avoiding that friend for ten months. When at home his mother had aroused him for early labor of his life on the farm, it had often been his fashion to be irritable, childish, diabolical, and his mother had died since he had come to the war.
He saw that in this matter of the well, the canteens, the shells, he was an intruder in the lad of fine deeds (501)."
Do my essay on Stephen Crane CHEAP !
Stephen Crane was a very prolific writer for his time period. He was a Naturalist who focused on the role of the environment in shaping a character and determining life. Most of his writings dealt with "extreme environments," such as the middle of a battle field. Such graphic scenes allow the reader to receive a glimpse into human nature that they otherwise might not experience. His short story, "A Mystery of Heroism," deals with such an environment. This short story takes place on the front lines of a battlefield during the Civil War. Crane uses very vivid imagery of the battle field that one can almost imagine being there. In the story, the main character, Fred Collins, is egged on by his army colleagues to go fill their canteens with water from a bombed house's abandoned well. This is were Collins begins to wonder what makes a hero, and questions if his actions are heroic. Although Fred Collins is a simple man not free from flaws, it is these flaws that illustrates his humanity which enables him to become a hero.
In Crane's "A Mystery of Heroism," the search of what is a hero is explored. During the course of the story, Collins, a union war solider in the Civil War, desires a drink of well water located across an active battlefield. Going against all his inhibitions and judgments, and going along with peer pressure, Collins decides to make the suicidal trip. Remarkably, he gathers himself together because he knows that he has to come back a "victor". When Collins begins his expedition, he feels as if he is out of place. He believes that he has no right being out in the middle of the battlefield. He finds it hard to believe that he got himself into this situation, but knows that he can not back out now.
This leads to the beginning of the selected passage. At this point Collins is wondering why he does not "feel some keen agony of fear cutting his sense like a knife." In this situation most people would begin to feel a sense of fear, as if they were about to die. But Collins, on the other hand, is not having these feelings, and it concerns him. He wonders this because "human expression had said loudly for centuries that men should feel afraid of certain things and that all men who did not feel this fear were phenomena, heroes". He does not see himself being able to placed in that caliber of man, a hero. He does not think that he is qualified for that title. Does running across a battlefield for a drink of water put him in the category of being courageous.
Fred Collins evaluates his life at this point to disprove the title he loosely put upon himself "No, it could not be true. He was not a hero. Heroes had no shames in their lives". Collins believes that he could not be a hero because he is not free of fault. For one to be considered a hero in his eyes, you can not be selfish, you would need to be genuinely good. Which he believes he is not. In his eyes he is full of fault and not genuinely good.

Hamlet by William Shakespeare is the play of a son, Hamlet, who seeks revenge for his fathers death cause by his uncle. The readers of this play are inclined to await for Hamlet to seek his revenge. Due to the circumstances Hamlet is inclined to feel lonely and asks if there is an after life. This is said through his sililoque in Act , Scene 1, To be, or not to be that is the question... Be all my sins rememberd (ll. 64-8). This silioque tends to give its readers a feeling of suicide and to be empathetic towards the speaker.
In the sililoque To be, or not to be Hamlet wonders whether it is better to live with misery or die with uncertainty. Life is nothing but suffering and enduring fortunes unfair blows. Suicide is the ultimate defense against lifes troubles. Suicide offers peaceful sleep; but what dreams may interrupt that sleep? Hamlet is afraid of the uncertain afterlife and those unknown nightmares that may be in store. Death offers peace, but the dreaded unknown makes men too cowardly to commit suicide. Hamlet expresses a longing for an escape from this world to an another. It seems as if he fears that he has sinned because in the last lines he asks Ophelia to pray for him that all his sins be remembered by her. This sililoque conveys a truthful message to its readers of how a mans nature is. Hamlet tends to feel this way due to his fathers death, his mother remarrying within a month of his fathers death to his uncle whom is the King now. He also is Hamlets fathers murderer.
To begin this sililoque, Hamlet uses the support of a question. Then he answers by stating a few facts about his question. Hamlets uses a repitition of negative words such as suffer (l. 65), sling (l. 66), troubles (l. 67), heart-ache (l. 70), whips and scorns (l. 78), and despisd love (l. 80) to express how he feels about the society and its people as a whole. These words convey an empathetic gesture towards Hamlet because they implie that Hamlet has been through and is going through a depressed and sad time in his life. To address the importance that death plays in Hamlets life, Shakespeare uses the repetition of the word sleep in lines 68, 6, 7, and 74. The word sleep is an indication to death, though shakespeare also uses the word death and die directly in lines 68, 7, and 74. To lighten the depressed and sad mood a little, Shakepeare uses the word dream in line 74, when instead the word nightmare could have easily ajusted properly.
The imagery that this sililoque creates is that of different epics and stories. The image that line 66 gives is that of the duel scenes for land between the cousins from the epic Mahabharat. The image that line 67 can be related to is to the epic The Odyssey. The scene were the ship is being swallowed by the underwater mouth, yet the travelers on the ship are persistent to continue seems to give the image of a person who takes arms against a sea of troubles (l. 67). The other images that are conveyed through this sililoque are that of a deprressed person whom can not seem to find a way out of this state other that sleeping forever, dying. Yet, even after death he thinks his soul will not rest in peace and he will have bad dreams, which all will feel like reality. This person seems to be hurt from not only family but also a lover. Hamlet uses such images to enable his audience to view how he really feels deep down. Hamlets feelings of being hurt from a loved one, Ophelia, are portryed in line 80 despised love and in lines 7-8 The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons/ Be all my sins rememberd. He feels hurt due to Ophelia turning down his proposal because of her status compared to that of his.

These feelings helped Hamlet his character develop in muturity and the understanding of how others feel. This is portrayed by how Hamlet waits for the right moment to kill King Claudius and how he insures his feelings whether the ghost he saw was telling the truth or a lie. This sililoque of Hamlets by Shakespeare is able to convey the true nature of a man and how he feels when hurt by loved ones. This sililoque contains a lot of pain that a person has endured over a period of only a few months.

From the story, One Man's Mutilation is Another Man's Beautification by Germaine Greer. The writer tells us that Western technological culture of body has more influence on people's life all over the world. People begin to lose their's self without their's consciousness because they believe that body modification or body reconstruction can encourage them in living within the society. They also believe that fashion, beauty and fitness can indicate or changes their status in society. And if they are rejection to follow traditional or behave inappropriate way that social can accept they may be driven of the society.
In my opinion, I like this story and I think the writer has a sarcastic attitude toward the subject of body modification. I agree with her because I think it's not a good idea to change or modify one's self to satisfy another and be accepted in society. Moreover, I think every people all have perfect body since we were born but it depend on how they behave or the way that they use to express themselves to another. Because we aren't belong to a part of fashion but fashion is just a part of ours life. It uses to show that we are fashionable like another in society or not. And society can accept and satisfy from what we do or not. Furthermore, fashion can change all the time, if we try to be fashionable, we have to change ourselves and ours life all the time in order to make another accept too. And these thought can make a problem or conflict on ours life. If we see from P.164 "The motives for western beautification are very different….People who are excluded from economic activity…they now invest as much energy or more in trying to resist the inevitable." It can support that people will do everything to make other acceptance even it cause of pain and risk of death rather than living alone. And these thoughts about indulge in flamboyant mutilation or beautification on people becomes commercials on relationship among people in every society. Because now we can find many professionals are in manicure, cosmetic, or surgeons etc. And in P167. "Individuals do not modify their bodies to please others or to clarify their relationship to others. Rather they inflict changes upon themselves in order to approximate to narcissistic needs which may have been projected on putative others." And the reason that people have reconstructed their bodies or change their physical appearance in order to satisfied another people can be accept in groups or society. It like they were lost into the form of alien culture and become a part of being monster. So, I think we should be our own masters and we should follow our desire but it must be in appropriate way and society can accept. However, I believe that every people want to be fashionable more than be outdated so I think the best way to live in society with happy is know how to adapt between fashion and life together. And it must not be harmful to us or risks death.

While under the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, the aftermath of World War One seemed to be
more difficult than the war itself for the United States. After the war had been over, Wilson,
along with the other members of the Big Four needed a solution for Germany's punishment and
for means to maintain peace among the nations of the world. In his Fourteen Points, Wilson had
Help with essay on Wilson's 14 Points
hoped to have the answer to the world's problems with solutions such as freedom of the seas and
a League of Nations. According to Wilson, the League of Nations was made to protect all
members of it, and keep the peace among all countries. When Wilson went before the Big Four,
he had hoped to include this League of Nations in the Treaty of Versailles, which at that time
was supposed to be the solution to World War One. However, Wilson came across some
difficulties in trying to accomplish this. Not only was the strength of the opposition forces the
reason for the defeat of the Treaty of Versailles, but both that and Wilson's stubborness equally
led to the Senate's defeat of the treaty.
The strength of the opposition forces in Congress partially caused the defeat of the treaty
because of their strength in numbers. Because Wilson was alone in presenting his League of
Nations, he was severly outnumbered by his oppositions. Congress, both the liberals and
conservatists, had fear of the League of Nations because it would prevent the U.S. from
acheiving isolationism. As shown in Document A, everything that is significant to the people of
the U.S. "shall be submitted to a tribunal created other than by our own people" and will take
away their own decisions as a government. Because many saw this as a threat to our society,
many objected to Wilson's League of Nations. The League of Nations did "much to intensify
and nothing to heal the old and ugly dissensions"(Document B), and everyone except Wilson
saw that. Because Wilson had no support of his League of Nations, and no one on his side, he
was overpowered by the majority of Congress who opposed the league. Just like DuBois says in
Document H, "America was not represented," therefore the American people were not
supportive of Wilson and his ideas. However, though Wilson's opposition was strong, his
stubborness also contributed to the Senate's defeat of the treaty.
Wilson's inappropriate stubborness also led to the Senate disapproval of the treaty,
mainly because he would not compromise with them on Article 10. Because Wilson gave the
Senate a "my way or no way at all" approach, the Senate therefore chose no way at all. Wilson's
stubborness about Article 10 proved to be worthless, because under all conditions, the Senate has
complete control over what goes and what doesn't, as seen in Document E. Had Wilson been
willing to negociate over the treaty, he would have been able to meet an understanding with the
Senate. In Document G, when Wilson asks if Americans "want [their] country's honor
vindicated and the Treaty ratified?" he is telling them that the only way for Americans to have
homage is for them to support the League of Nations. His 8,000 mile tour and even his stroke
during his ratification debate showed his stubborness, and didn't allow for the Senate to make
their provisions on Article 10. Since the Senate has so much power, if they cannot put their own
provisions in on something, then no one can. Wilson's foolish stubborness amounted to nothing
but his death, and because of that he was unable to get the treaty with only his provisions ratified
by the Senate.
Not only after World War One did the League of Nations receive no support, but even
today, the United Nations plays little if no role in American affairs. Americans want to be in
control of what they do, and do not want to be forced to do things against their will. President
Bush has decided that America does not need approval from anyone, and that we must take
matters into our own hands. Like the League of Nations then, the United Nations today receive
no American approval.

Lucas is a bored, gullible and foolish boy who unscrupulously allows himself to become emtowiled in events through the story. Strangely in the two major events, which dominate the story, it is Benoit, not Lucas or Alex, who is the more scheming character. The actual motives to cut the one tree left in the Cercle and to devise the Molotov cocktails that damaged the derelict building meant to house the Jews comes from Benoit! Equally noteworthy, and contrary to what readers might think of Alex being a troublemaker, Alex actually does very little scheming and stupidly follows Benoit.
Benoit is the smooth-talking intelligent extremist right from the start. The very first time readers see him at the gun shop and one of the first things he does is to talk the shopkeeper into selling Lucas the gun. This shows straight away that he is a smooth-talking person.
Right at the beginning Benoit tells Lucas, 'We want to act the way he acted, for the good of our country.' (p74) Benoit puts ideas in Lucas' head, as he wants Lucas to look up to him as a role model. 'I'll do anything I can to help you.'(p74) Benoit then later ropes Lucas into the two major events.
Benoit always thinks ahead. He fixes Lucas' chainsaw and soon asks Lucas to cut down the tree for him in return. Benoit also thinks ahead before talking to Lucas as is apparent when Lucas says that the tree is on private property and Benoit stays clam 'I realised he had prepared thoroughly for this conversation. He had foreseen my objections.'(p166) When Lucas tries to get out of cutting the tree, Benoit keeps on urging Lucas 'They fix my chainsaw for me and when they ask me for something, I tell them to get lost'. (p168)
Throughout the story Lucas is described and seen as a bored, gullible and foolish boy. The two major events, the cutting down of the tree and the Molotov cocktail events show that he is easily lead. Lucas also shows been taken advantage of easily as in the case when the police come to see what the Arabs had stolen and he did not tell them that it was he who took the saw out and cut through the middle of the bench.
Another simular event is the visit of Caitlin to see if Lucas could cut more wood for Soeur, Lucas again is taken advantage of as he said, 'Yes, Ok…I'll take care of it.'(p54) Even though 'Cutting this tree into blocks without a chainsaw was an impossible task.' (p5) Another good example is Lucas selling his painting and a woman buys it from him for less than he had asked. 'I counted the money she handed me. It was a bit less than I had asked, but I didn't say anything.' (p4) Benoit knew this and with his intelligent smooth-talking character, he manages to control Lucas.
'I let myself be carried away.' Lucas says. (p81) Even Caitlin can see Lucas' vulnerability. 'Now I realise that your vulnerability has its downside.' (p84)
Alex is given to violence, a trait he does not depend upon others to acquire. 'I am not so fond of guns. The knife is what I prefer.' (p17) Most of the time Alex wants to be led; however, there are about two instances where Alex does play a leading role. He talks Lucas into joining the 'Club' of which he and Lucas are secret members. On another occasion Alex again prevails upon Benoit when he desperately wanted to return to the scene of the cut tree, but Benoit declined. However, Alex was persistent enough to make Benoit succumb and they returned to survey the damage.
Benoit is fully aware that he can ask Alex to do almost anything and he even goes out of his way to protect Alex from being accused of all the wrongdoings in the story. Benoit has a motive here; he has not finished with Alex. He obviously is keen to 'use' Alex in his future schemes.
This discussion, therefore, shows that the strongest or the most forceful character in the story is not Lucas, not Alex, but Benoit. It is Benoit who dominates the story with his constant and xenophobic plotting and schemes against foreigners. He Looking at the three major characters in this essay clearly shows how Lucas is a bored and gullible boy.

Feminist or Not? Jane Eyre...
(INSERT YOUR OWN INRO)
From a feminist point of view Jane Eyre is a confusing novel! On a given page one may think that Jane has a seemingly weak character, but on another page one would want to sympathize with her, or want to help her. This is why it is difficult to label Jane Eyre as a feminist novel, or just a story about a who overcomes hardships in her life.
Jane Eyre can be easily seen as an antifeminist novel. There are many characters and events in the story that would force one to believe that this novel is not feminist. One of the most obvious reasons would be the characters that Jane looks up to.
Buy Jane Eyre a Feminist? term paper
At Lowood the only people that Jane has to look up to are Mrs. Temple and Mr. Brocklehurst. Mrs. Temple was a negative role because she only had her position when the male figure wasnt around. She was often told that she was trying to overpower Mr. Brocklehurst, and when he did, she gave into him! Brocklehurst was a negative role for Jane because he didnt believe that women were equal to men. He used his power to control everything that he could. He also publicly embarrassed Jane, which made her quest for independence and equally even harder.
Even the marriage between Mr. Rochester and Bertha Mason give the novel an antifeminist twist. It shows that a man is using a woman for her money, and status. He married her for all of the wrong reasons...he didnt marry her for love or equality. When Rochester realizes that he really doesnt love Bertha, he locks her up so he can feel free to pursue other women. Thats just not right.
These reasons are why Jane Eyre could be considered an antifeminist novel. Those were just cover-ups though to the truth theme of the novel the equality of women. There are many reason to believe that the novel is feminist. One of the most obvious reasons would be Janes dream to been seen equal to Rochester. Janes only wish was to marry a man who would see her as his equal, because she wouldnt fight and compete with him to be seen that way.
Charlotte Bronte imagined a world where the husband treated his wife with respect and thought of her as his equal. When Jane and Rochester fall in love she makes it clear to him that she will not be walked all over, and wouldnt stay in his shadow. Unfortunately, Jane finds out about Bertha and sees how overpowering Rochester can be. This causes her not to want to marry him, and then she had no one to turn to.
At that point in Janes life she knew that she couldnt marry Rochester, because she did not want to be the next Bertha. Jane knew that she had to establish herself as an independent woman before she could consider marrying Rochester.
There are many events in Jane Eyre that show that Rochester needs Jane in his life. That shows that if Rochester is capable of needing Jane then he would be ready to treat her as an equal. That was shown when Jane pulled him out of his bed fire. Had Jane not been there, who knows what would have happened, therefore showing that Rochester needed Jane.
When Jane returns to Rochesters and learns that Bertha is and he is blind she goes to find him and realizes that she is capable of being his equal. For the first time he realizes that he truely needs Jane, and she feels truely needed. She decided to follow her heart and marry him for love, not money or status.
Although Jane Eyre wasnt written during a time when women were seen as equals, it is a feminist novel. It should be labeled as feminist because when it was published Charlotte didnt want to give away that she was a woman, because she knew that it wouldnt have been published. It would have lost readers if the novel had been seen as purely feminist. Another reason that Jane Eyre is a feminist novel is that it was hard for Charlotte to make strong independent characters, because she herself wasnt able to be independent. Even though Jane Eyre is not often viewed as a purley feminist novel...it is, and Charlotte Bronte did an amazing job creating a world where women were equal to men even though in the real world it wasnt possible.
End.
