Briar Rose Assessment Task Year 1

Briar Rose is centered around one womans Holocaust experience and intermixed with the classic fairy-tale, Sleeping Beauty. Yolens uses of classic fairy-tale elements such as a prince and the curse of a long sleep are used to connect us to the horrors of the death camp Chelmno. The result is a story that is fresh and shocking as it tears away any of the numbness one may feel for another account of a Holocaust survivor. Suddenly the fairy-tale ideas of rescue and evil are invested with modern connotations.

Jane Yolen takes an interesting tactic with the story. The odd chapters consist specifically of Gemma, the grandmother, telling her version of Sleeping Beauty to her grandchildren, mostly Becca. The even chapters, however, tell of Beccas search, after her grandmothers death, to find out her grandmothers real identity and origin.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Essay on Briar Rose

It is evident that within the last half of Briar Rose that the alternating chapters merge. This gives rise to a realistation of a symbolic connection between the Halocaust story and Gemmas story of Sleeping Beauty. For example; in Sleeping Beauty, the curse that is bestowed upon the princess, her family and friends mirrors the curse of doom that the Nazis and Gustapo unleashed.. The mist that covers that castle and puts everyone to sleep symbolizes the gassing deaths of millions of people. The castle surrounded with roses that were covered with barbs that were impenetrable symbolized the barbed wire that held the condemned inside the prison camps. By the end of the novel, there is so much symbolism to notice it almost overwhelming. It is as if the symbolism clicks together for the reader at the same time Becca pieces it together for herself.

From the commencement of the novel, the reader receives clues that that the story of Sleeping Beauty is combined with and has an underlying truth of the Holocaust Gemma have been through. "Everyone likes a fairy story because everyone wants things to come right in the end. And even though to tell a story is to tell some kind of untruth, one often suspects that what seems to be untruth is really a hidden truth." This epitomizing the traditional fairy tale moral constructs created to teach children right from wrong; the consequences of obedience and disobedience; and belief that evil can be reckoned with and overcome. Gemma's tale of sleeping beauty is a basic symbolism of her ordeal with the Nazi's, where she emerged as the survivor, symbolised by a princess in Sleeping Beauty. A direct relation between the Holocaust and Sleeping Beauty is demonstrated when Gemma says to Josef "And I shall never forget the dark prince who kissed me awake".

Briar Rose is a exceptionally emotional novel. The language used by Yolen is very graphic, openly depicting the horrifying events that took place in the concentration camps, symbolised by the castle in Sleeping Beauty. The vivid depictions Josef Potocki gave of his struggle makes the reader feel as if they suffered right along with him. When Potocki told Becca and Magda of how he and his companions found Gemma, it came as bitter sweet news due to the horrific events that her grandmother had been through. Described as "In the darkest regions of hell".

Yolen demonstrates an intertwining feature between the fairy-tale; Sleeping Beauty and the Holocaust experience which was undergone by Gemma. He uses the story of Sleeping Beauty to symbolise what actually happened in the concentration camps. He achieves this through the use of; structure, language, themes and characters. The result of which is a novel depicting the atrocities of the Holocaust from a number of diverse perspectives and emotions.

My Experiences in America

It all started when I got engaged with Pankaj, my husband. He is a Graduate student at Sam Houston Sate University. Because he was already in America, I was suppose to join him too after getting married. I had seen America in different Hindi movies. But what I imagined was entirely different than what America was, especially, Huntsville.

My husband's uncle was financing his education and his wife was the one who came to receive us when our plane landed in Houston. She is an American, I was told about that but I was very nervous to actually see her until she came and hugged me. She broke the ice between me and her on the way to Huntsville. So my first experience was what she taught me when my husband was busy getting some stuff from Wal-Mart with his friend. The first thing she told me was that when you come to any new country then you will have option to choose between good and bad. It will depend on you as to what you choose. She also told me that America is a land of opportunity and if you work hard here then it will pay for sure. She told me that in America there are different kinds of allergies; therefore, keeping things clean at house is very important. She made me acquainted with all the means of utilizing space efficiently, as we had very little room available. Till today her support in different areas of my live has been a tremendous help to me.

Another very important experience of mine was with starting my studies in America. I had to take GED, TOEFL, TASP examinations in order to get into the college. Each of the tests was full of new experiences and tested me on different skills. Today, after finishing all my tests and a semester of my college, I feel much confident of my skills. I never had this feeling in my Country. One of my American friends taught me how to swim. Till date, I can't believe that I can actually swim. Some of the things I love about America are that here there is uninterrupted electricity and water throughout the year, which is hard to imagine in India. Even though our apartment is small but it has all the appliances to make life easy and fast. Internet the tool of latest and bountiful information is available at all times and is cheap too. Internet made my life easy to stay connected with my family and friends. And now with web cam, my family can even see me anytime they want to. I feel technology much better here than I use to feel in India. My American friends always helped me in studies, transportation and have made me more confident of my skills. But like a coin that has two sides, I had my share of problems in America. I am a vegetarian and in my country, restaurants have all kinds of vegetarian food in their menu but not so in America. Here it is very hard to find things which are vegetarian. Another bad experience was moving around without a car. For sure, America without car is like swimming in a long river without boat. Every store is far away and it is hard to go bare foot anywhere because of high speed traffic. In America education after high school is very expensive and for international students it is four times of what it is for residential students. I feel lucky to have scholarship over here as without scholarship it will be next to impossible for me and my husband to study at the same time. Last but not the least I miss my family and friends. There are some Indians here but still people with whom I grew up with are the ones I miss the most and I think that as the most important social loss.

In conclusion, I still like what I achieved in America and I love the feeling of making my family and husband proud of myself. America is nice country to live and meet people from different countries and making friends. I hope to learn and experience better things about America in coming years.

Essay on "a doll's house"

Nora Helmer, a character in Ibsen's "A Doll's House", is the prime metaphor of the Helmers' marriage. Being a "songbird", a "squirrel", and a "squander bird"; Nora flutters around her apartment under a mask of illusion, a helpless "creature" to please her husband. Nora's whole life has been a tree of deceptions branching up from its roots to its leaves, the leaves absorbing the most of life-her children. The metaphor in the title of Ibsen's "A Doll's House" suggests Nora has a childlike relationship with her father, her husband, her children, and even reality.

Nora's father and Torvald Helmer have basically the same duties; they play, provide for, and adore Nora. They see Nora as they want her to be, a pretty doll, not what she is. In the beginning of the play the reader sees Nora Helmer as shallow, much like today's "Barbie"; but as the play progresses, the reader sees a change in Nora as her dark secret comes to the surface and threatens her marriage. Only at the end of the play does Torvald know of her lies, before he reads Krogstad's letter he is oblivious and shows this when he gets upset about "an untruth" Nora told. Nora and Torvald's marriage has a foundation of lies. Torvald believes Nora when she says "You know I could never act against your wishes" and Nora believes Torvald when he says "Often I wish some terrible danger might threaten you, so that I could offer my life and my blood, everything, for your sake"; both of these statements being total opposites of the truth. Nora's father and Torvald see Nora as a child, a mere doll to play with and Nora spends most of her life playing that role.

Nora's three children who are raised by the Nanny, Anne-Marie. Anne-Marie, being a mother figure for Nora, takes care of the children until Nora wants to play with them. Nora sees her children as talking baby dolls, and treats them much like Torvald treats her. When Nora tires of playing with her "baby dolls", she passes them to Anne-Marie. Nora really doesn't recognize her children as real people until Torvald tells her how lies can poison them and the home. Not really understanding the effects it would have on her children, Nora shuts herself away. When the play ends, Nora leaves the children like a child would leave a doll after getting tired of playing with it. Nora's bond with her children is like a child's attachment to a doll.

In "A Doll's House" the characters are not totally in touch with reality. Nora doesn't understand the world outside of her home and how serious some lies can be. The transaction of money between Krogstad and Nora shows how naïve Nora is. Nora forges the signature of her dead father for her sick husband and breaks the law. She thinks the laws don't apply to her if the action was for love and tells Krogstad "the laws must be stupid" if they don't allow for saving her husband's life. Torvald, unlike Nora, knows about laws but knows nothing about his wife. Never having ever listened to Nora talk about her dearest friends, Torvald doesn't even know or care who Christine Linde is when she walks in the door. Even as Dr. Rank, a family friend, is dying Torvald doesn't want to accept his statements of death. Torvald and Nora Helmer each live in their own bubbles, shielding them from the truth and the world around them.

Nora's relationships with her father, her husband, her children, and her life are that of a child shielded from the harsh realities of the world outside her home. From the "Barbie and Ken" relationship between the Helmers evolves a new relationship, one between Nora and herself. Being a child for so long, Nora wants to grow up and leave her bubble of lies; like Pinocchio she wants to become a real person.

They were called the "roaring 0's. And it certainly lived up to its name. The

brighter side of these years were "roaring" with all kinds of music and dance, but

on the dark side it also was filled with gangsters.

Some americans in this time period allowed the criminals, even those that

Write your movies research paper

were involved in bootlegging. Bootlegging is another word for smuggling illegal

substances. There was thought that bootlegging may have been allowed because of

the recent ban of alcohol during this time period, which was known as the

Prohibition.

Gangsters were involved in bootlegging, prostitution, gambling, and

organized crime, Al "Scarface " Capone, Bonnie and Clyde, and John Dillinger

were the headline makers of this time. Al Capone was one of the most famous

gangsters of all time, maybe one of the reasons Al Capone is so memorable is

because of the fact that he would always maintain a high profile. Perhaps his most

famous "claim to fame" was the Saint Valentines Day Massacre. In 1, a rival

boss, Bugs Moran, began to infringe on Capone's territory. He sent some of his

"boys", disguised as police officers, to one of Moran's drop-off spots for alcohol.

The Massacre was a "gangland bloodbath" in which 7 men were shot, most of them,

members of Bugs Morans gang. It took much work from the police untouchable

Eliot Ness to finally convict Capone, who was finally imprisoned for income tax

evasion. Al Capone spent 11 years in jail. Al Capones final days at Alcatraz were

spent in the prison hospital, where he suffered from symptoms of syphilitic

dementia. He later died from an unrelated heart attack.

Bonnie and Clyde are two famous friends who drove over the country

committing murder after murder and robbery after robbery. After eight years, the

couple was gunned down outside of Arcadia, Louisiana by law enforcement.

Because it was as if the law was a minority, the couple's bodies were displayed as if

they were prizes. Another criminal, John Dillinger, he was a "pioneer" in organized

crime. He would find escape routes, and always have a safe house. He had many

informers on the "inside" that were paid to assist him. One time in Wisconsin, the

FBI and police officers had him surrounded in a lodge and charged in to capture

him and he "mysteriously vanished" leaving the government embarrassed. Dillinger

was finally shot and killed when he and his girlfriend were exiting the movie theatre

by awaiting law enforcement.

Gangsterism was a risky job but had maximum rewards in a time when the

jobs were scarce and our country was in the midst of a depression. Then when

congress passed the 18 amendment, alcohol was banned in every way from America.

People who were addicted to alcohol and even those who were accustomed to the

casual drink still had a demand for it. Many would pay a lot of money for a drink,

and this is what opened up many opportunities for those who were willing to take

risks and bootleg illegal alcohol to the country. The gangsters began to explore more

hard fields of work. The gangsters began to open speakeasies, which were like old

west taverns with prostitution, gambling, and the drinking. Speakeasies had cover

charges ranging from five dollars to twenty-five dollars, depending on the price of

alcohol at the time. America's obsession for alcohol allowed the owners to charge

any price they wanted. Thousands of speakeasies were located in Chicago, which

meant that tens-of-thousands of speakeasies were spread around the country, with

most in the large cities.

Gangsters moved up in the ranks and began more vicious crimes such as

murder and massive theft. Most of these crimes were necessary to keep their busines

alive. Murder was widespread because people that were being paid to keep their

mouth's shut, would open them and then they would have to face some very harsh

consquences.

The Nuba Tribe

Two men in a desert wrestle holding brass bracelets as a crowd watches closely. Suddenly, one cuts the other's neck with the bracelet. The referees then separate the fighters, and the women come forward to treat the wound. This is an example of a typical wrestling match of the Nuba tribe. The Nubas are an interesting people who are important to Africa.

The Nubas are found in Northern Sudan, along the Nile River in the Nubian Desert and Nuba Mountains. This area is approximately 15 degrees North latitude and degrees East longitude.

The Nuba Tribe lives in a few different regions. One of these regions is around the Nile River, a river that flows through Africa and is shared by the Sudan with several other countries. They also live in the Nubian Desert, which extends into lower Egypt.

The culture of the Nuba tribe is interesting. The Nubas live in huts, which blend into the surrounding land, built with whatever materials are available to use. Often, a different hut is built for each function of the family, such as cooking and sleeping. They wear little clothes, but decorate their bodies with hand made jewelry made of stones and wood. Many Nubas also cut scars into their bodies for decoration and rub oil on

themselves. They do not have money or an economy because they live off of the land. The language of the Nubas is Nubian, which is very similar to Arabic. Nubian is slowly disappearing though, as more and more Nubas are speaking Arabic.

Wrestling is a very important part of the Nuba culture. The rules to Nuba wrestling are strict, and there are often at least two referees at a match. The men wear a double-edged bracelet made of brass on their right wrists, trying to cut the other man's top and back head with it. Nuba men gain honor through wrestling, and they are given ashes when they win. When a member of a Nuba tribe dies, their body is buried. Later, the ashes they received from wrestling are buried in a separate, more important grave. Family is important to the Nubas. They live with their family until marriage, when the husband builds a new home for the new family. A Nuba man is not allowed to marry until he has become a qualified wrestler.

The Nuba's have a simple and honest system of government. An Arabic District Commissioner serves as the town's judge, and there is usually a town policeman who is Arabic also. Imprisonment is the most common punishment for crimes. Missionaries have begun elementary schools within the tribe, and many Nubas who complete their education successfully go on to find a job in nearby cities, coming back to the tribe on holidays. There are about 00,000 Nubas today, but as they become more civilized, the number of native Nubas is going down.

The location of the Nuba tribe affects the way they interact with their environment. Many Nuba's farm off of the land, and they raise cattle on the plains. They

live close to the Nile so when it does not rain they can get water from the river. The Nuba's live off the land they are on, and interact with their environment in that way.

The Nubas do not have cars, boats, or airplanes to move themselves and materials. They walk everywhere they need to go, and movement of ideas and information is through talking.

In conclusion, the Nuba tribe is an important to Sudan and Africa. They have an interesting culture and lifestyle that is very old. The Nubas are and important and interesting tribe.

There are definite similarities between William Golding's Lord of the Flies and his "Thinking as a Hobby." Aside from the fact that they were both written by the same author, there is evidence in both pieces of writing that show his thoughts on thinking, and the grades of thinking. He says in "Thinking as a Hobby" that there are three "grades" of thinking Grade , where one believes what one likes, and blindly ignores contradictions in one's beliefs, however obvious. There is Grade as well, which is when one begins to detect contradictions, and sees them, and ventures so far as to ask "Wait a minute… how could this be true if that was?" And Grade 1 is where one answers that question, and learns by discovering, and is logical. In Lord of the Flies, there are characters of all these grades of thinking.

Ralph and Piggy, for the most part, are Grade 1, even though they are merely kids and aren't very educated; but typical education is not what determines the thinking grade. Both of them are logical, and think ahead, and ask the question "How will that affect the future?" True, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of solid Grade 1 thinking going on throughout the book, but the thoughts of Ralph and Piggy, along with their actions, and worthy of a higher rank than Grade The lower area of Grade .

A Grade thinker would be more like Simon. He ventured to ask the question "What if there's no beast?" aloud, but soon hushed, as it caused unsettlement. He didn't actively venture to find the answer to this question. He found it out though, as the Lord of the Flies let him no. Now it is likely that a dead pig head wasn't talking to him, and that it was his imagination, hence himself that answered the question, but he didn't consciously ponder the answer.

Most of the rest of the boys on the island were Grade thinkers. They were careless, not caring about the future. The worst of these was Jack, even though he may have been worthy of Grade at the beginning. At the end, however, he believed in having fun, hunting, having territory, and being the leader. But he had said before he wanted to get home. He wouldn't last long on the island with the actions he took, such as setting the island on fire. And he was set on killing Ralph because he was logical, and would point out contradictions in his beliefs or inarguably logical reasons to change them. Jack didn't want to hear this; he wanted to continue doing his thing, so he was set on getting rid of that which stood in his way. The most of the other boys followed Jack, and were doing and believing the same things he was. True, most of the boys were not as bad in the very beginning, but there is little or no evidence that they were actually any higher a grade thinking than , except Samneric, who were originally with Ralph and Piggy, along with Simon, but defected and became part of the primitive, Grade thinking savages. Most of the boys declined in their grade (not grade number, rather the position in Grade ) throughout the book.

Do my essay on Lord of the Flies and Thinking as a Hobby CHEAP !

There were a few differences between Lord of the Flies and "Thinking as a Hobby" as well, but they weren't major differences. Obviously one was fiction and the other not, and they both had entirely different plots, but another minor difference is that "Thinking as a Hobby" was very funny in many places, and Lord of the Flies was, harsh as it may be to say so, not. And also, Lord of the Flies was concerned with human nature more than "Thinking as a Hobby" was. But otherwise, the two pieces of writing were very similar, in their views on thinking.

If not their first, it becomes the second language in the lives of everyone.

English is used as a common tongue to unite speaker of different languages. In countries such as Africa and India, where many different languages are spoken, it is used as the language of the government. As it was said in the video "The History of English," "In India English has the benefit of not being a mother tongue….If Hindi was used in the government it would be one party's mother tongue, putting the other at a disadvantage….English is neutral." English is very important in cases like this, and so therefore it is important for people in power to know how to speak it.

In this age of travel it is vital to have a form of easy communication internationally. English is used as the conventional language of aircraft landing in 157 different countries around the world. Even an Italian aircraft, flown by an Italian pilot, landing in Italy will communicate with the Italian Air Traffic Control in English.
