William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson are known authors whose written works are from the same era, in fact, Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare knew each other from some of their featured performances together. This essay is not about the relationship Jonson and Shakespeare shared together on a physical level but in the emotional wayaspect they share similarities within their writings. Following is a comparison between "Sonnet ", by William Shakespeare and "On My First Son", by Ben Jonson. Religion plays a huge role within societies all over the world and is very evidentapparent in history, especially in writing. Both poems mention God in a rather interestingattractive way that may not be very visible to the eye. God, in these two poems, is seen as extreme power whose existence seizes to exist on earth itself but overpowers man and becomes a second person in mind and body; the first being one's own conscience. God is accepted but somehow a pain stake in Life which is hard to face because it seems as though he blesses the already blessed and takes away from those who have nothing. Note A brief introduction to the religion of Christianity is helpful is describing the beginning.

Christians believe that there is one god, and that He created the universe and continues to care for it. The followers of Jesus did not accept His death as His end. Jesus followers were certain that Jesus came back from the dead. They believed that He later rose to heaven. The first Christians were Jews. The many disagreements between the two groups in ancient times caused a breakup of the religion. Soon many non-Jews joined the new religion called Christianity. At the beginning there were many kinds of Christian leaders, both men and women. The most important leader of the church was a bishop; women were rarely able to hold this position. Men have almost always held higher positions and have had more power then women. Although unfair to some; Male dominance was preeminent from the time of the earliest written historical records, probably as a result of mens discovery of their role in conception as well as the development of hunting and warfare as prestige activities. The belief that women were naturally weaker and inferior to men also was sanctioned by monotheistic male god-centered religions. Saint Paul urged Christian wives to be obedient to their husbands. In most traditional societies, women generally were at a disadvantage at that time and still until this day. Their education was limited to learning domestic skills, and they had little to no access to positions of power. Pressure was constant to produce many children as a means of their position. Marriage was almost a necessity as a means of support or protection. A married woman usually took her husbands status; and lived with his family, with little recourse in case of ill treatment or nonsupport. Women were also encouraged to believe in their husbands religion even if their previous religion was different. Under Roman law, which influenced later European and American law, husband and wife were one, with the woman the possession of the man. As such, a woman had no legal control over her person, her own land and money, or her children. According to a double standard of morality, respectable women had to be chaste but men did not.

At first the Roman government considered Christianity a legal Jewish sect. Beginning at a very early period and continuing for many years after, various Roman empires persecuted the followers of Christianity; they gave the believers who were both men and women the opportunity to prove their faith by dying for it.

"In truth, he was an odd fish, ignorant of common life, fond of rudely opposing recieved opinions...enthusiastic in some points of religion, and a little knavish" (4).

Ben Franklin's account of his employer Keimer's awkward social interactions, and thus lack there of, reveals to the reader the importance of social uprightness in colonial America, and can interestingly be paralleled to present-day America. Even today, certain subjects are taboo within upper crest social circles ( similar to those Ben Frankin appeared to be involved with) and zealous politically incorrect opinions are discouraged. One would presume that the numerous tecnological and social advances (i.e. the civil rights movement, womens rights, etc.) over the course of 50 years would procure a generation of Americans who accept and even encourage unusual opinions and zeal outside defined hubs of raw creativity, such as a classroom, yet this is not always the case. This rigidness regarding politically correct and accepted opinions seems to be solely rooted and nourished among the more intellectual and admired social circles similar to Ben Franklin's and therefore leads one to question how the omnipresent taboo subjects become rectified.

It appears that the common mediocre Americans, such as Keimer, who have no fear of making uncomfortable remarks to eachother in their conversations, bring the issues to a head and resolve them. An example of such an issue is the recent HIV and AIDS epidemic. Presumably the most common transmission was between homosexuals, and thus a taboo yet incredibly important subject arose. Many of the educated upper crest socialites (such as governmental legislators and representatives) ignored the subject for fear of appearing tactless and indiscreet among their peers, yet overtime, the ordinary Americans began to uprise, demanding action.

I find it interesting that I can vote, drive a car, and have African-American friends, yet even after all that this country has accomplished, many of my fellow Americans have the same trivial fears as their forefathers did.

Fredrick Jackson Turner's Thesis was one of the most widely praised and widely criticized theses of all time. Within his thesis, Turner proclaimed the close of the frontier even though much of the west remained unsettled. He claimed that the western lands had prompted many Americans to venture through terrible conditions to establish new lands, societies, and value unique only to the frontier. The settlers were all distinct and brave settlers who lived by their own code and reverted back to a simpler life, living on just necessities. Without the settling of the west, there would have been no eastern progression. Turner believed that we could no merely expand only technologically, but that it is vital to expand physically as well. Turner justified the expansion with the claim that all of the western land was free land. He completely disregarded the Indian presence in the west. Nowhere within his thesis, however, did Turner give any mention to the struggles of women or children.

Turner claimed that the western expansion helped to reflect the values of Americans. When intelligence and experience combined with the hardship and struggle of the expansion, a new society was created. Americans were profound individuals who were not afraid of sacrifice and willing to devote their time and energy to the betterment of their cause. Western expansionists forged a new life out of broken bones and lost lives. The societies they formed were both unique and everlasting. While European nations were coming to an end in their physical frontier expansion, America was just at its beginning. Turner believed our westward progression would ultimately bring us to greatness.

I do believe that our characters are carved out from our struggle and suffering and how we are able to adapt to the situation. The western settlers are perfect examples of individuals who were cast into a new mold and created anew as rural settlers. By living on mere required supplies, they were able to help establish a new, great country. Turner, however, only highlighted the struggles and victories of the white American male. He never included the stories of the women, minorities, or children. Turner also neglected the fact that the "free land" he spoke of was already technically settled by the Indians. Overall, however, Turner's thesis helps pain a vibrant picture of frontier to inspire future settlers in their overcome the next frontier, whatever that may be.

Richard Wright was born near Natchez, Mississippi, but grew up in Memphis, Tennessee.

He is an African American. The information didn't say anything about his educational

background. I assume he didn't attend school because his family was poor, and he was a

black boy living in the Great Depression. Black Boy is the story of Wright's experiences

Write your Black Boy research paper

growing up in the South.

The essay summarizes a period in Wright's life. He moves to Chicago and lives

with his aunt in a rented room. He is very independent and dreams to have a job. Wright

takes an examination for a possible job as a postal clerk; his dream job. In the meantime he

works in a North Side care. He becomes a temporary postal clerk and writes in his

freetime. Richard Wright has to take a physical examination for the position of regular

postal clerk. He fails because he is underweight by 0 pounds. Wright has malnutrition,

and he has a hard time gaining weight. He sleeps and eats a lot of food but his weight

remains constant. He decides to go back to the cafe and writes a lot. He is upset about his

job but doesn't know how to show his feelings. He grew up in a distant non-loving family,

and it made it hard for Richard to share his emotions. Finally he starts to gain weight and

finds a great interest in writing.

The essay is intended for goal-oriented people. Wright is independent and works

hard to find a good job. He also takes up the hobby of writing and does well. I think the

essay is good to read for someone graduating college or looking for a job. It is sometimes

harder to find the jobs we prefer, but we have to start at the bottom of the food chain and

slowly move up.

The point of the essay is that Wright worked really hard to succeed. He wasn't

able to be a postal clerk, but he found a great interest in writing. It's not explicity stated in

the essay because it is the autobiography of his life. It's interesting because Wright tells

the reader how much food he ate to overcome malnutrition and become healthy. I never

knew malnutrition was a problem because I always have three meals a day and snacks.

Wright's parents couldn't afford to feed to Richard all the time. A good example of

support is on page 1, "I made eating an obsession. I ate when I did not want to eat,

drank milk when it sickened me." I think it is good because it shows how he struggled to

overcome malnutrition. "Repeatedly I took stabs at writing, but the results were so poor

that I would tear up the sheets" Is an example of good support because it tells how he

struggled with writing (Wright 1).

Pathetic Fallacy the attribution of human emotions or characteristics to inanimate objects or to nature.

Example of Pathetic Fallacy in Great Expectations

"I walked away at a good pace, thinking it was easier to go than I had supposed it would be, and reflecting that it would never have done to have an old shoe thrown after the coach, in sight of all thee High Street. I whistled and made nothing of going. But the village was very peaceful and quiet, and the light mists were solemnly rising, as if to show me the world, and I had been so innocent and little there, and all beyond was so unknown to and great, that in a moment with a strong heave and sob I broke into tears. It was by the finger-post at the end of the village, and I laid my hand upon it, and said, 'Goodbye, O my dear, dear friend!' [pg. 14]

. The metonymy of gloom and horror

Dickens' uses some of the elements of a Gothic novel in Great Expectations. , 5, 6, & are used in Satis House. The house alone is creates an atmosphere of mystery.() When Pip stays the night, he follows a ghost-like Miss Havisham down the hall and hears her loan moans throughout the night. [pg. 86] (5) Miss Havisham herself surprising Pip with her overwrought emotion. She first cackles like a witch from pride of Estella, and later becomes deeply upset and cries at Pip's feet for what she has taught Estella to do to him.

Atmosphere

"It was wretched weather; stormy and wet, stormy and wet; mud, mud, mud deep in all the streets. Day after day, a vast heavy veil has been driving over London from the East, and it drove still, as if in the East there were an eternity of cloud and wind. [pg. ]

Dickens uses repetition to underling how dull and monotonous the weather is and so creates an atmosphere of subdued and miserable tension of the chapter.
