INVESTIGATING HARD AND SOFT WATER

INTRODUCTION

Water that contains calcium and magnesium ions is called "hard water" because calcium and magnesium ions can combine with other ions and compounds to leave a hard scale on the surfaces they touch. Hard water may be a troublesome in household water supplies. Fortunately, there are simple solutions to hard water problems. Hard water can be softened by the removal of metallic ions responsible for the hardness. This is known as water softening. Softened water is desirable in the bathtub, lavatory, kitchen sink, and laundry room, but is undesirable as drinking water.

This lab activity will demonstrate the different characteristics between hard and soft water.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Part I

Three test tubes labeled "A" , "B", and "C" were needed. Test tube "A" was filled half way with Deionized water. Test tube "B" was half way filled with Tap water, and test tube "C" was half way filled with Hard water. A solid soap chip was added to each of these tubes and they were mixed well. Observations were recorded for each tube.

Part II

Test tubes were rinsed thoroughly, and were still labeled "A", "B", and "C". All three test tubes were filled with Tap water, and a solid soap chip was added to each tube. 4-5 drops of Calcium chloride solution were added to test tube "A". 4-5 drops of Magnesium chloride solution were added to test tube "B". Nothing was added to test tube "B", which will serve as a control. Each tube was mixed well and observations were recorded.

Part III

Once again, test tubes were rinsed thoroughly and the labels "A", "B", and "C" were still visible. Test tubes "A" and "B" were filled half way with Tap water. A level plastic spatula full of Calcium sulfate was added to each tube. - drops of Soap solution was added to tube "A", and it was shaken well. A level plastic spatula of Sodium carbonate was added to test tube "B". Tube "B" was shaken and then - drops of Soap solution were added to it. The tube was shaken as before. Observations were recorded.

RESULTS

In Part I, Tube "A" containing the water without any ions of calcium or magnesium formed a lot of lather at the top and the rest remained clear at the bottom. Tube "B", containing the Tap Water and soap formed a little lather, but not as much as the deionized water. Tube "C", the hard water formed no lather at all, it formed a white scum at the top of the tube and clear water at the bottom.

In Part II, when we compared Tube "C" (control), to tubes "A" and "B", we noticed the difference that the ions of Calcium and Magnesium made to the water. Tubes "A" and "B" formed immediately a big amount of white scum at the top of the tube, while the control tube, made a little lather and was a bit cloudy at the bottom. In Part III water reacted differently with other additives. Tubes "A" and "B" remained evenly cloudy with some lather at the top. This water showed to be softened.

DISCUSION

The interaction of soap and different types of water was observed in Part I, showing the characteristics of hard and soft water. The addition of Calcium and Magnesium ions made water harder in Part II. There are various methods for water softening today. For example the problem could be solved adding lots of soap, boiling the water, precipitating ions of Calcium and Magnesium out of the solution and replacing ions of Calcium or Magnesium with Sodium, as in Part III of the activity. A mayor reason why hard water is objectionable is because it leaves mineral deposits inside steam furnaces, hot-water heaters, hot-water pipes, and tea coffee pots. The scale formed in boilers and hot-water heaters is a poor conductor of heat and causes a waste of fuel. Household hard water problems can be solved with the installation of a water softener. Water softeners usually consist of a tank containing an ion-exchange material such as resin beads. When water passes through, calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions. Further investigations will be conducted about this matter

It was my eighth grade year; a year which for many is filled with memories of a trip to Washington D.C., or hanging out with friends every day after school. My eighth grade year brought different memories. I have memories of my mother being slowly taken away from me by a terminal illness, and memories of my father struggling to raise my sister and me while his wife was dying before his eyes.

I first learned of my mom's illness when I was in the sixth grade. I was at an age when I could not really grasp the concept of losing one of my parents. It was a time of great transition in my life, the transition from a regular kid with two loving parents to a teenager who now had to help take care of his own mother. By the seventh grade I had realized the inevitable; my mom would soon die of C.J.D., an illness similar to Alzheimer's, but much more rapid in the process of taking one's life. I often talked with my dad about how things would be different when my mom died, but it never truly prepared me for that day.

My mom was the most amazing and influential person that I have ever known. She was always willing to listen to people and offer any advice that she felt could help. My mom loved the outdoors. Our family used to visit her parents in Arizona. We would take hikes as a family in the mountains that surrounded Phoenix. She was an excellent photographer, and always had her camera on hand. She even ran her own photography business earlier in her life, but it was taking pictures of our family that she loved the most. My mom always made sure that we knew how much she loved us; and we did.

My mom struggled with C.J.D. for two years. She first lost her motor skills. After about a year she lost the ability to talk. She never lost her ability to communicate though. Even though she could not talk, I could tell what was on her mind. She never lost her ability to smile either; she could still light up any room with that smile. My mom died in the early hours of the morning on November 7th, 18. It was the day after my dad's birthday. I woke that morning half knowing that she had already passed away. When my dad woke me up to tell me, I was not surprised. I lay there in my bed for a while before finally rising to face the day that I had feared for so long. Instead of attending school that day, I went running. I went to a near-by park and ran for about an hour. The whole time that I was running, I was thinking. I thought about life, about the challenges that would lie ahead, about everything.

I miss my mom deeply. I miss her kind voice, her sense of humor, and I miss hugging her every day before leaving the house. Not a day goes by that I do not long for one more hug from my mom, or to tell her that I love her, and hear the same from her. It has been five years since my mom's death, but the pain has not gone away. The pain may never go away.

Although my mom's death was the most tragic experience of my life, it has played a major role in shaping me as a person. Her death has taught me to cherish life and every moment that I spend with someone I love. The experience has helped me realize that I can over come any obstacle or challenge that is presented to me. I have become more aware of how previous life truly is, not only my own life, but also every person, and every creature's life. I believe that everything in life happens for a reason, whether it is a tragic experience, or a positive experience. This tragic experience has helped me appreciate life, and people, and become truly grateful for everything that is good in my life. I have learned that life has many sharp turns; it is the way that one chooses to handle these turns, and obstacles that defines his or her character. I am confident, in part because of my experiences, that I can handle the sharpest turns, and the toughest obstacles. I will not shy away from challenges put before me, but welcome them head on, because that is what my mom would have done, and she is the one who taught me how to be strong.

What is beauty?

An omnipresent characteristic, beauty has stolen the eyes of today's youth. As every body knows that inner beauty is considered to be more important than outer beauty. Though, it's obvious that inner beauty is the need of humanity, yet the younger generation nowadays, tend to they waste too much of their precious time on outer beauty rather than inner beauty. This matter is considered to be one of the main problems in our society. I want to discuss a part of them base on what I knew.

First of all, I want to ask, what is inner beauty? Each of us has a different definition of it. In general, inner beauty is a quality of mind, strong spirit, talent and generosity of a person. He/she could give to his/her peer pleasure, good time in communication. One always takes the initiative in conversations and solving problems. One could lead their friends to do the right thing. For example in my English class, there are some of my friends are African; they know the possessions very well. They are smart, usually give suggestions and answer the teacher's question before the rest of class. So it is their inner beauty. And my best teacher, he is African too and looks very simple. He is very good teacher. He gives extra help to his students anytime during school day including his lunch time and two to three hours after school every day. He treats his students as good as his own children. Every one likes him. For a person uneducated, we could see inner beauty in his/her actions such as gentle, helping another, none of greedy, and none of stealing and honestly…example my uncle in china, although his family is poor, but he never steals or cheats anyone money. Those are sample to show that the inner beauty is the need of humanity. Beside the inner beauty, outer beauty is topic considered, it has greater affection.

How is outer beauty affected to a person? People think that once they are beautiful, their friends, their companions will accept them easily. Indeed, it is true. Every one is absorbed by the outer beauty. It is good impression on the first look. Example, the guys always look for the girls' beauty first of all, and the girls are same too. If a girl has uneducated or not smart, rude but she is beautiful, there are still many guys want her. And if the guy is a bad person, but he has good looking, so the girls still like him. In addition, a person has outer beauty is look like an easy person, and friendly to talk. But the first impression is not usually right when we want to value a person. If the person just have outer beauty, they are easy to get forget after that. So inner beauty and outer beauty has their useful. Nowadays, they are not balance anymore.

The Youth today, they run too much for the outer beauty and left behind the inner beauty. In the developed country like Canada, high living standards, they make up and update fashion. Aesthetic is popular. Ugly could change to beautiful easily. Entertainment is high-tech. The clubs is preferred. The Youth just run for update. The time goes so fast, the people don't pay attention and have no time to find out the inner beauty of their friend. We have independent, some time it makes a person be meant if too much independent, they don't care another. There are some one said that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". It means the inner beauty is getting forgotten in this society. True beauty is no longer matters in anyone's eyes. It warns to the parents that should what out their children, lead them into the inner beauty like study hard, be a good person rather than just run for out side look like clothes, high-tech equipments…

Those are my opinions about the true beauty. I want to remain that Inner beauty and outer has own their world of useful. But the Youth today, they run too much for the outer beauty and left behind the inner beauty. It is not good. Beside that there are many people they want to improve their inner although they have outer beauty. If a person has inner and outer beauty, he/she is a perfect person. We should discuss and show the true beauty to each other. We should look deeper in our self to find out is it true? As Buddha said "should look at your peer such as a living Skeleton." Buddha was a king; he left his kingdom to be a monk. He wanted to find out the topnotch of inner beauty.

Please note that this sample paper on inner beauty is for your review only. Civilian life on the home front varied between many different factors. It not only depended on if you lived in the North or the South, but also if you lived in an urban area or rural area in the North or South. Civilians in the North Sacrificed much less than civilians in the South, mainly because most of the war was fought in the South. As I mentioned before there are about four factors that determined what kind of life or they had.

In Northern cities many soldiers went to war, they left the wives and children to keep up the house, and the money. Many women had to find jobs or start their own businesses to keep income coming in while their husbands were off at war. In some cases when children weren't at school they were working to contribute to the family salary. For the rich people, the war did not affect them as much. They could pay someone to serve in the army in their place, so that the men could stay home and keep up with their businesses. This may sound kind of bad, but it is good also because many new businesses that helped provide things for the war. So these men and their businesses were busier than ever before. Also, big cities were used for hospitals for wounded soldiers. There were very many wounded soldiers and not enough nurses. So this called for more civilian women to come and help out at the hospitals. One of the organizations that helped wounded soldiers was the Sanitary Commission.

The Rural areas of the North were normally smaller type towns outside of the big cities. For them, their life changed considerably. Many of them depended on farming and could not afford to pay for someone to go into the war for them. So the wives and children were left to run the farm, which is very tedious work. They would start at dawn and go until after dark with out many breaks. And don't forget house chores, these were done at night so they could work during the day on the farm. When children had time they did the things that we do now, such as playing, swimming, horseback riding, or anything they could find to do. Children needed to be educated also. There was hardly any money for extra things such as toys, books, and etc. there was barely enough money for the simple things such as clothes, soap, and things like that. Women would get together once in a while and do what they could to help out with the army, including sewing uniforms, and collecting food for the soldiers. All of the communication between them and their husbands or sons in the army was writing letters. It might be months until they even got it. It was difficult to get letters to every one. Families would wait around for hours to see if their husband or son was on the wounded/ dead or missing list.

In Southern cities, war and fighting became a "way of life." In Vicksburg the fighting became so horrible that citizens were forced to live in caves along the Mississippi River, they did this for protection against the Union army. They had little food, some had to eat rats. The largest issue in the south was the fall of their economy. Prices went up very high, one example would be that one piece of firewood cost $5.00! People would burn their furniture to keep warm because they could not afford firewood. The food supply was very low. The army had priority over the food since they needed it more than civilians so they could be fed during the war. One event from this was Richmond Bread Riot, where women rioted because they could not find bread for them and their families. President Davis tried to help them and threw out what money he had to them.

Custom Essays on Civilian Life

The rural south was hit the hardest during the civil war. Many of the battles took place in this area. Farms, crops, and cattle were destroyed. People were kicked out of their homes for them to become hospitals for the wounded soldiers. Bodies were often left all over the fields. The odor filled the air. Many dead animals were burned. Union artillery shells that hadn't gone off earlier sometimes killed civilians. General Sherman's strategy to defeat the south was to destroy everything they had until they would give up fighting. This took place mainly in Georgia for about 60 miles wide. They burned buildings that held supplies for the war, destroyed farms, houses, and many other things. As you can see Southerners suffered very much.

Wes Anderson and The Royal Tenenbaums

It takes a lot for a movie to be successful in the film industry. From cast and crew all the way up to the main color seen through out the movie, it takes long periods of planning. Light colors can give off a warm feeling and cool colors can give sort of an uncomfortable or eerie feeling to the movie. Music choice also has a big impact on the movie. It takes a lot of listening to figure which one is best for each scene. A good example of a film that follows all these guidelines is "The Royal Tenenbaums." It is a brilliant film. From emotions and humor to satire and irony.

The setting of the movie takes place in New York City. Wes Anderson, the director, wanted to make it seem like it takes place in sort of a fable town. He does this to give the movie a different feeling. So you never see any landmarks or anything to let you know that it is in New York City. It also is a very quiet part of the city so it doesn't really seem like your ideal place in New York. The time period is never really stated. The main colors through out the film are mainly warm browns and yellows. With one scene where there is a very cold blue to make it seem uncomfortable. The music for the movie goes well too it is very calm and moody. And the cast and crew were thought out very well. The story is about a family with three kids who are geniuses, a father who doesn't actually know what it means to be a father, and a mother who just wants the best for her kids. The parents want their family to be perfect and to be noticed, so they start them off young with teaching. In turn they achieve things very young in life then spend the rest of their lives trying to figure out who they are. The father and the mother are getting a divorce in the beginning. Each character that is introduced tells you sort of how they fit into the family.

Royal Tenenbaum, played by Gene Hackman, the father of the family, didn't really know much about being a father and he always chose favorites. After he and his wife separated he lived in a hotel, the Lindbergh Palace for years. He once was a litigater until thrown into jail. Later in the movie he realizes he loves all his kids, even his adopted daughter. He is a very stubborn man and wants his children to be geniuses and known through out their lives.

Etheline Tenenbaum, played by Anjelica Huston, is the mother of the family. All she really wants is the best for her kids.

Margot Tenenbaum, played by Gyweneth Paltrow, was adopted into the family at age two. She was a playwright at a young age and won a Braver Man Grant, for a lot of money, in the ninth grade. She was always introduced as the adopted daughter. Through out the movie she is very quiet and always alone. She is always looking for attention from her family though, especially Royal.

Chas Tenenbaum, played by Ben Stiller, worked in the business breeding and selling dalmatian mice, which there really are no such things. At an early age he was buying real estate. He grows up and gets married but then his wife dies in a plane crash. He is left with taking care of his two kids, and ends up with sort of an obsessive-compulsive disorder for their safety.

Richie Tenenbaum, played by Luke Wilson, is a championship tennis player. He has been since the third grade. At the age of seventeen he became a pro. He won the US nationals for three years in a row. He occasionally painted. He retired from tennis later on in life. He was a major character in the story, the one you probably get to know the best.

These are all the characters in the family. There are more characters but those actors make the family, or the story line. All these characters were played by great actors which made the movie fit well together. The irony of the movie is that you never really get to know the characters personally but you can still have sympathy for them. There is not really enough time to personally get to know each character. They are just mildly introduced. But the way the movie was put together and acted out you can still get teary eyed in the end. This is a really great movie. Wes Anderson did an amazing job with everything from cast and crew to colors and music; it all seemed to fit together.

In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. As our nation becomes more ethnically and culturally diverse, companies are under pressure with the issue of workforce diversity. Managing diversity is not a new issue faced by companies. But the way it is used or managed has changed. The latest development is to use diversity as a competitive business strategy. Allstate is one of companies that is culturally diverse and is seeing improved results ranging from better customer satisfaction to increased sales.

For several years, diversified workforce was social responsibility and legal necessity. It was thought that competitiveness and corporate social responsibility were opposing policies. A competitive organization was driven by profit maximization. But in today's world, both views have converged. Both are equally important for business. Allstate is one such example.

All the elements included in the steps are aimed at retaining the best employees. Under succession planning, Allstate uses several methods to seek out the best candidates for each key position. The main purpose is to ensure that workforce is diverse at levels. As a result of succession planning, 40% of Allstate's executives are women and 0% are minorities. Through the development process, all employees receive an evaluation of their current job skills and ways for developing skills required for advancement. Twice a year the company provides a survey to its employees, which is part of measurement step. The feedback from employees helps in creating plans to solve problems and improve work diversity. Also to link compensation to the diversity goals, 5% of each manager's merit pay is based on the diversity index.

The composition of the customer base of companies has changed due to diversity. A multicultural workforce can provide a company with greater knowledge of the consuming habits and preferences of consumers. This knowledge can assist Allstate in developing better marketing campaigns and services to satisfy customer needs. Also diverse work teams promote creativity and innovation, because people from different background and situations have different opinions. My name is Daynelis Brito-Capote. I was born in the beautiful City of Havana, Cuba. Ad the oldest of my parent's two most wonderful creations, I have been a role model to my youngest sister Amnelis. From a very early age, I have had to be cautious of my Behaviours, as I would never want to serve as a disappointment to my sister. She looks up to me and I always intend to provide her with an admirable example.

My parents are people of high morals and values and they have always pushed my sister and I to be the best that we could be more importantly they demand that I push myself to do the same with regard to the decisions I make and my plans for the future. They also have taught me to always respect myself and to demand the respect of others. This moral code carries through to all aspects in my life.

Being born in Cuba and raised there until the age of fourteen, means that I am steeped in its culture, lifestyle, values and its dominant Catholic religion. It has been quite challenging to came to a country with so many diverse backgrounds, different standards of living and varied ideals and principles. In the Spanish community, reptation is sacred; especially if you are a female. Dealing with the liberal attitudes of Canadians and the severe peer pressure to conform has been an internal battle that I take pride and dignity in conquering. Being Cuban is and forever will be the foundation of who I am, however having the challenge and opportunity to participate fully in two separate cultures has taught me to grow strong and be a very open-minded person. One of my greatest accomplishments to date is learning a new style of living and an entirely new language within the confines of only three years.

Throughout my life I have been involve in many extra curricular activities, all wich have helped to shape and mould me as a person. After struggling through ballet for several years, I finally decided that it was not the genre of dance for me, so at the age of eight I discovered Flamenco dance and realised I really had a talent for it. I put a lot of hard work and dedication into becoming a great dancer. During the last years of elementary and the three years of junior high I was also involve in choral singing, track and field and the school dance team and play. These are some of the thing I really miss about my home country as well as my friends and the weather. But I decided when I came to school here in Canada that the language was not going to stop me from doing those things that I enjoyed most. In my ninth grade year, I participated in all of the school assemblies and in grade ten I had a lead role in the school's major dramatic production; "FAME". In addition to this I joined the diversity club and dedicated a lot of my time to make students from different cultural backgrounds fell welcomed and comfortable in the school as well as in the community. Being a part of this organization provided me with an increased interest in learning a third language and last year I participated in the bi-lingual work exchange program where I was able to study and work in French. This year I served as the president of the Diversity Club and was instrumental in preparing the first annual "International Food Night". AS a member of PAWEECA, a school based charity group, I have been dedicated to volunteering with various groups within the community. I have also been teacher's assistant for the grades elevens dance program, modeled in the school fashion show and and currently serve on the school's safe grad committee. Amazingly enough I have been able to balance my studies and extra curricular activities while holding down two part-time jobs.

When I was a little girl in Cuba, life was not always easy. I always had very strong work ethic and I told myself that if I really wanted it I could do anything. I have always followed my instincts and although on many occasions I have directed myself along the wrong path I have been able to get out if it was interrupting the path I have traced to my future. It had not been easy but it can be done and honestly so far in my life I have been a blessing with not true regrets. I look forward to the future challenges of my life and hope that I can always be c shining example not only to my litter sister but also for anyone who faces the adversity and challenges of life.
