It was May of 1886 when the pharmacist concocted caramel- coloured syrup in a three-legged brass kettle in his backyard. He first distributed the new product by carrying Coca-Cola in a jug down the street to Jacobs Pharmacy. For five cents, consumers could enjoy a drink that was proclaimed Delicious and Refreshing. Enjoy a glass of Coca-Cola at the soda fountain. Whether by design or accident, carbonated water was teamed with the new syrup, producing a drink . Dr. Pembertons partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, suggested the name and penned" Coca-Cola in the unique flowing script that is famous worldwide today. Mr. Robinson thought, The two Cs would look well in advertising. In 1886, sales of Coca-Cola averaged nine drinks per day. That first year, Dr. Pemberton sold 5 gallons of syrup, shipped in bright red wooden kegs. Red has been a distinctive colour associated with the NO. 1 soft drink brand ever since. For his efforts, Dr. Pemberton grossed $50 and spent $7.6 on advertising. Allegedly Pemberton was a morphine addict. So in 1887 he began to sell parts of the company Coca-cola to Joseph Jacobs, owner of Jacobs Pharmacy. In early October 1887 Pemberton ran a blind ad looking for additional investors. WANTED AN acceptable party with $,000.00 to purchase one-half interest in a very profitable and well-established manufacturing business, absolutely no risk, and guaranteed a 50 per cent profit on investment, with possibilities of much larger profits and rare opportunity to right party. He was able to get three investors with this ad . He took $,000 from each of them. Their names were J.C. Mayfield, A.O. Murphey and E.H. Bloodworth. On July 8th he sold a third of the company to Willis Venable and another third to George Lowndes. Neither man had the time to market, make or sell Coke so they sold their portion of the company to Woolfolk Walker and his younger sister Margaret Dozier. Dozier owned two-ninths and Walker four-ninths of the formula rights. Now here is where it gets interesting. Venable some how disposed of his portion of Coca-cola twice. During some time in 1887, the three new partners moved to Atlanta, ready to produce Pembertons medicines. At this point the formula of Coca-cola was officially owned by Pemberton, Walker and Dozier, but several others had interest in it. Asa Candler, an ambitious Atlanta druggist some how acquired control of the company later in the month of December although he probably didnt own any part of the company until 1888.

He acquired the drink in return for gambling debts owed him. Charley Pemberton (Johns son) claimed his right to the drink. This kicked off two coke clones by the names of Yum Yum and Koke.Pemberton grew ill and he died on August 16, 1888. Candler was a pallbearer at Pembertons funeral and spoke very highly of him. In later years he was quoted saying Why, I suppose Dr. Pemberton felt I was one of his best friends. Two weeks after Pemberton died Candler bought out Walker and Dozier for $1,000. With the exception of the Walker, Candler & Company portion, Asa Candler had legal rights to Coca-Cola. He was calling himself the drinks sole proprietor by May 1, 188.

Until 10 only Candler and Robinson were allowed to mix the syrup behind locked lab doors. They removed all the labels from the ingredients delivered by the various chemical companies. Only Candler dealt with the mail and paid the bills so the accountants could not learn the formula, and kept the sole key to the file where the invoices were kept As the company expanded, Candler and Robinson could not prepare the syrup all themselves, so the Ingredients were all simply labeled 1 to . And the managers at the branch factories were only told the proportions required and the mixing procedure. Candler aggressively advertised Coca-Cola in newspapers and on billboards. In the newspapers, he would give away coupons for a free Coke at any fountain.

Candler achieved a lot during his time as owner of the company. On January 1, 18, the famous Coca-Cola formula was patented. He also opened the first syrup manufacturing plant in 184. His great achievement was large scale bottling of Coca-Cola in 18. In 115, The Root Glass Company made the contour bottle for the Coca-Cola company. the most famous bottle shape of all time is the Coca Cola bottle. The Coca Cola bottle evolved in 115, when a Swedish engineer, Alex Samuelson of the Root Glass Company of Terre Haute, Indiana, based the curved shape on a illustration of a coca bean found in the encyclopedia of Britannica.

Coca-Cola was sold after the Prohibition Era to Ernest Woodruff for 5 million dollars. He gave Coca-Cola to his son, Robert Woodruff, who would be president for six decades. Robert Woodruff was an influential man in Atlanta because of his contributions to area colleges, universities, businesses and organizations. When he made a contribution, he would never leave his name, this is how he became to be known as Mr. Anonymous. Woodruff introduced the six bottle carton in 1. He also made Coca-Cola available through vending machine in 1, that same year, the Coca- Cola bell glass was made available. He started advertising on the radio in the 10s and on the television in 150. Currently Coca-Cola is advertised on over five hundred TV channels around the world. In 11, he introduced the Coke Santa as a Christmas promotion and it caught on. Woodruff also introduced the twelve ounce Coke can in 160. The Coca-Cola contour bottle was patented in 177. The two liter bottle was introduced in 178, the same year the company also introduced plastic bottles.

Woodruff did have one dubious distinction, he raised the syrup prices for distributors. But he improved efficiency at every step of the manufacturing process. Woodruff also increased productivity by improving the sales department, emphasizing quality control, and beginning large scale advertising and promotional campaigns. Woodruff made Coke available in every state through the soda fountain. For all of these achievements he earned the name, The Boss.

In 185, the Coca-Cola Company made what has been known as one of the biggest marketing blunders. The Coca-Cola company stumbled onto the new formula in efforts to produce diet Coke. They put 4 million dollars of research to come up with the new formula. The decision to change their formula and pull the old Coke off the market came about because taste tests showed a distinct preference for the new formula. The new formula was a sweeter variation with less tang, it was also slightly smoother, of course the blunder was that everybody hated this new formula and this is where Coca Cola Classic came from when they changed back to the original formula.

As one of the best known trade names, Coca Cola was created in May 1886 by Frank M Robinson, bookeeper to the creator of the drink Dr John S.Pemberton and was registered as a trade mark on 1 January 18. The name was based on two of the drinks contents extracts from coca leaves and from the coca nut. The fact that coca leaves also yield cocaine is a connection that the manufactures do not wish to advertise and it is certainly true that although the drink once contained a form of the drug especially in the early days when it was advertised as an Esteemed Brain Tonic and Intellectual Beverage, it now contains none. The name itself is a successful one as a memorable and easily pronounceable trade name, and having three memorable k sounds Coca Cola gained popularity rapidly to such an extent that the manufacturers were forced to register a second name for it used by the public Coke.

The name coke originated as a popular alternative for Coca Cola before the First World War , with the popular abbreviation used by a rival firm, the Koke company of America, who made a similar drink. Fearing the loss of identity and the amount of other drinks under the name, the company adopted coke in 10 when the Supreme Court of the USA ruled that Coke was the property of the Coca Cola company. The name characterises a beverage to be had at almost every soda fountain, declared Mr Justice Olvier Wendell. It means a single thing coming from a single source and well know to the community. In fact the Courts had had doubts about the name, since coke was and still is a slang term for cocaine, which was originally present in the drink in microscopic quantities. Later, when cocaine was removed from the formula, the company found the name a successful one, free from undesirable or misleading associations. The name Coke first appeared on bottles in 141 and was registered in 145.

The second element of the name is not a registered trade mark, so that cola drinks exist on the market in a number of varieties . Among the rival brands were Coca, Cola, Fig Cola, Candy Cola, Cold Cola, Cay Ola and Koca Nola. All these were outlawed by the courts in 116.

Coca-Cola is worth more than 58 billion dollars on the stock market. For more than 65 years, Coca-Cola has been a sponsor of the Olympics. The 16 Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia, the home of Coca-Cola. One of the great things that the Coca-Cola company has is helping the people of Atlanta. They accomplish this through scholarships, hotlines, donations and contributions. Another large accomplishment that the Coca-Cola has is being the first company to make and use recycled plastic bottles. One way to see all of the achievements of the Coca-Cola company is to visit the World of Coke in Atlanta. It houses a collection of memorabilia, samples of the products, exhibits, and many other exciting items. All of what has been said is the basis of what Coca-Cola was built on. Without societies help, Coca-Cola could not have become a over 50 billion dollar business. Keep on drinking the worlds favorite soft drink, Coca-Cola.
