Since the beginning of time morals have been a part of all societies. The advent of this concept however is not truly clear. In many animal communities it has been observed many features that are common to what we as society today see as moral standards. Animals such as lions and others have been observed taking care of and providing for their young (Titus, 157). We have also been able to observe social structures and hierarchies of society in lower intellectual animals ( Titus, 157). These observations in other species have made it very difficult to establish an origin for this important concept. Today in this paper it will be shown that this moral decline can be traced to more than one factor. Two will be examined closely slavery and poverty as sources of this moral decline. To understand the decline in morals in the African-American communities today we will have to examine several factors such as what are morals, how are these morals set, what are the problems that the African-American communities are facing, why do these problems arise and finally ways of dealing with these problems after they arise.

Morals maybe described as rules in which society follows to make for peace and cooperation between individuals within this environment (Edwards, 187). Morality involves; helpfulness, truthfulness, honesty, kindness, sympathy, respect, reverence, courage, and self control (McVenn, 11). These traits are expected by other individuals in society (Gert, 188). Often in society we refer to persons with good moral values as a person who is good. Good for our purpose, a good person will be defined as a person which leads another individual to physical, intellectual, or spiritual development (Herman, 188). Men always love what is good or what they find is good; it is in judging what is good where they go wrong ( J.J. Rousseau, 188). This statement sums many of the problems that we are facing today. Today many African-Americans are not able to judge what is really right or just. We must now look to find how these morals are set in society.

In most societies moral codes or standards have been set for thousands of years. As you travel to different parts of the world you find that these standards often change depending on the area you are in. Actions of people are perceived right or wrong due to their status in society in most cases (Dewey and Tufts, 161). We see in many societies that there is a struggle between dominant and inferior groups. The struggle usually arises from the fact that the dominant group usually forces their social interest on the masses (Dewey and Tufts, 161). The non-dominant group will be changed to fit the lifestyle of the group in power. Man in this case does not have the freedom to be whatever he would like to be (Bourke, 168).

In other communities it is a particular social or religious group which will set the moral standards (Herman, 188). These standards are usually derived from a standard text such as the Bible or Koran (Herman, 188). These standards maybe related to a set of events, which occurred in the past. Finally some scientist have considered morals to be something that is instilled in most people from environmental evolution (Titus, 157). The standards of today have been set by many different sources and in many cases still maintain a certain amount of uniformity.

With the understanding of morals and how they are usually instilled into society we must look at factors which are not morally correct. For this paper we will refer to these situation in terms of the problems that they represent. Problems that affect the African-American community today are crime, illiteracy, drug abuse, and individual lack of self-worth (Nabbefeld, 17). These problems have consumed the African-American community since the 150's ( Nabbefeld, 17). Many of these situations arose with the rising " extremist intolerance" of those seeking to undo gains in social injustice, equality and basic rights (Nabbefeld, 17). Yet no one really knows why these problems truly arise in society. It has been stated that some people resort to amoral acts not because they are right and protecting their interest but because you maybe right (Runzo, 1). Still, other situations may stem from slavery and racial discrimination of African-Americans.

Now understanding what problems do exist in the African-American community we must find out why these problems exist. Two major reasons come to light when we discuss problems in the African-American community. The first and always a big influence on the African-American community on a whole is slavery. Since the migration from Africa to America many African-Americans have had to face many tough task do to the plight of being referred to as second class citizens (Jonas, 16). Many African-American of the present look at society with a chip on their shoulders. With the feeling of inferiority that is associated with being a second class citizen some loose the concept of morality. Many youth today feel that they will not have a chance to reach and old age so what they do now will not matter. Some do not feel that they will obtain a decent job or reach a decent status in life. They feel that they must use " any means necessary" to reach the good life. The sad part is that any means necessary might seem morally correct for them. This type of attitude produced by the reminisce of slavery and racial discrimination has left a scar in the African-American communities.

Another large factor that seems to almost walk hand in hand with the theory of being a second class citizen is a theory of poverty stricken African-Americans (Jonas, 16). In most cases we, as a group of people do not have the finances to support ourselves. Without means of support African-Americans are led to commit desperate tactics to survive. Morals often decline when you feel that there is no other alternative. When faced with extreme poverty situations people who are raised with good moral values are more likely to revert to what appears to be savages because they see no the other way to survive. All species have the will to survive and that will increases when you are without finance. This increase in will often leads to the attitude of I have to do what I have to do. In the future it will be important to realize these problems when they begin to prevent further moral decline.

As a community focus, we must now look at ways to prevent the further decline of moral values in our community. They are many ways that we may ensure a new moral code in our community. The first and probably most important will to reestablish a close link between the community and certain religious organizations (Rhoades, 1). In the black community many of us have grown up in the church which would provide the basis for good moral conduct in the community (S. Still, personal communication, March 0, 18). Since the times of slavery African-Americans have leaned heavily on the church to surpass difficult times. It has been proven that religious beliefs may make a difference in the way people respond to each other and their community (Rhoades, 1). Religious beliefs in many people will provide hope even under adverse conditions. Problems that exist today can in part be contributed by the lack in faith in God of the upcoming generation (R. Chavis, personal communication, April , 18). This renewed faith will surely increase our moral values as a community.

Moral values may also come from different groups from inside the community. African-Americans has long been associated with social action groups. A renewal in the faith of these groups would be helpful. In many cases social action groups may be able to provide programs that teach moral values and ethics. Groups such as the NAACP and National Urban League will have to make themselves more visible and also gain interest from the community to support their efforts. Supporting groups such as these may increase our moral awareness.

Finally, education is a way to increase moral awareness. Many of African-Americans as well as other ethnic groups take for granted that most people know the difference between right and wrong. This assumption is not always accurate. We as African-American need to take the time to teach what is considered right and wrong. As responsible morally equipped people we need to take the lead in spreading to our young and old what we believe to be moral and amoral. Morality can only increase if we take the necessary action to educate all people. This may be done on a large scale as with ad campaigns and also in classes in our schools. If we are to change the direction of our people we need to enter our own communities spreading positive messages. Life is filled with many evils. These evils can be changed with a march toward educating our people.

In conclusion, the ills of society do not need to stay with us. The reminisce of slavery and poverty that has plagued the African-American community for centuries may have started a moral decline in our community but it does not have to continue for the next generation. Many organizations in our communities are available to change our direction. Religious belief along with social action groups can make the difference in a society going wrong. Educating our people may put us back on track to a new more moral society. As a people we may never reach a perfect society where there is no wrong. But remember to always strive for the stars.
