The Odd Couple- Case Study

The Odd Couple is about Felix, who has been left by his wife, and Oscar, one of his best friends. Oscar lets Felix stay with him since he had no other place to go. The whole movie is about both of them learning more about each other and living together. This movie demonstrates conflict with friends and roommates.

Weaknesses and Suggestions

After watching this movie, I believe both Felix and Oscar viewed conflict as a struggle. This is a negative way to view conflict and they both never wanted to confront their problems. They always continued to struggle with each other until they couldn't take anymore. Felix felt that Oscar did not care about him because if he was going to be late for dinner he did not call. On the other hand, Oscar thought that Felix was being too controlling and acting like a wife. Throughout the whole movie it was a constant battle of their differences. They also were both avoiders. Neither one of them ever wanted to confront the other on how they were feeling. They just let the tension and conflict build until it was too much.

Instead of viewing the conflict as a bad thing, they should have thought of it in a more positive aspect. For example, they both could have viewed conflict as a bargaining table. In this, both Felix and Oscar would have been able to let each other know how they both feel and work on their differences. Viewing conflict this way is a type of collaboration. If they were to use collaboration rather than avoiding, their situation would have been better. When you collaborate you are looking out for both your goals, others goals, a solution, and a better relationship (WH 161).

At one point in the movie Oscar got so fed up with the way Felix always cleaned the house that he started to mess it up deliberately. For example, Oscar knew that Felix had straightened the pictures on the wall and he walked over there and turned them. He just did everything to make Felix mad because he was so sick of him cleaning. This was a classic example of an escalatory spiral of conflict. This is when something starts out good and eventually turns into something huge. Felix and Oscar did not have a big problem in the beginning, but since they let the problem escalate it became huge and forced Felix to leave. "Avoiding patterns reduce the chance for productive conflict(WF 54). We already know that they both were avoiders so the conflict was always destructive. This also helped the spiral of negativity and escalatory spiral grows.

To help out with this situation, I think they should have come up with a constructive power balance. Neither Felix nor Oscar should feel like they had more power in this situation. They both should have relied on each other and know what their strengths and weaknesses were. "Shared power is not a weak, tentative approach- it is powerful and energetic, and it requires great skill (WF 10). If they would have shared the power than their conflict probably would not have risen to the extent that it did.

The Odd Couple views two friends from two different living styles. They both come together to help one another out only to find they are incompatible. They go through several conflicts and ways to deal with it, mainly avoidance. In the end, they both realize that they care about each other but living together was not working out. If they would have dealt with their conflicts in a better way, living together could have worked out.

In a world in which tragedy and suffering are rampant, many Americans tend to focus on the relatively insignificant aspects of life. To often, they overlook the problems occuring in other parts of the world. In poverty-stricken countries across the ocean, families are starving and are consumed with fear over whether there will be any food that day. Not only are the worlds impoverished denizens forgotten by most Americans, but their suffering is compunded by the buisiness practices of this countrys large corporations. While we are certainly grateful for the convenience and low prices offered by Americas huge superstores, such as Walmart, many consumers are becoming aware of the unethical means by which these mega-corporations obtain their goods.

Large retail stores sell many hand-crafted objects at extraordinarily low prices. The majority of these items are imported from other countries where workers are paid shockingly low wages to labor over the hand-made goodies that we enjoy. The earnings these laborers recieve are so miniscule that they must struggle to put food on their tables. An Indian woman spends hours making a necklace which is sold in America for much less than it would cost if produced by an American making minimum wage. At home, she must dry the tears of her hungry three-year old. It certainly is nice, though, to be able to buy that necklace for half its worth, isnt it?

When Americans hear of the immoral practices of these companies, the majority feel sympathy for third world sufferers. Very few, however, care enough to take a stand against this injustice. Others want to right these wrongs, but they just do not know how. Americans often have the impression that, in order to aid those who are suffering across the seas, they must donate to worlwide relief programs, such as Unicef. While such campaigns certainly aid in feeding the hungry, in clothing the naked, and in providing shelter to the homeless, financial donations are not the only way that we can help. One of the easiest ways that we can help to ease suffering in poverty-stricken countries is to remain conscious of where the items we buy are made. Rather than to perpetuate the cycle of suffering overseas, we, as responsible human beings, should put down our collective foot about foreign sweat shop mistreatment. It will make a difference if we refuse to purchase products which were produced by the grief and hardships of others.

Americans muse begin to view the citizens of foreign countries not as Chinese or Pakistani or Indonesian, but as human beings. We live in a country founded upon a dream Lend me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses. We have a responsibility, not just as Americans, but as members of the family of man. Problems cannot be isolated to any one particular region of the globe. Your struggle is my struggle, and mine is yours. The quest for true life affects not only our physical bodies, but our spiritual selves. In order to sustain our spiritual lives, we must come together as one. We must share the burdens of others and do what we can to improve the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. We may not be able to atone for all of the problems of the world, but we must do what we can, even if our effort involves merely refusing to purchase goods that perpetuate the worlds anguish.

After reading Plato's Allegory of the Cave, I think that the allegory teaches us that a well-educated population is essential to a successful community. Before the people in the cave know about the outside world, they are convinced that the shadows that they see and the sounds that they hear are a reality. However, once the people were brought outside the cave and educated on reality as based on facts, they will become a much more productive member of the community. The same can be said for uneducated members of a community. For example, people who do not have a quality education can be compared to the people who are stuck in the cave. While they think they know the truth, they only know what they have seen and heard so far. Once they begin their education, they become a more essential member of the community. They can now help to educate others in the community. Education plays an important role in making our life more enjoyable.

The allegory also implies that it is everyone's responsibility, if they are educated to enlighten other people with their knowledge and to spread their wisdom. I agree with that to a certain extent. While I think everyone has something they can share with other people, it takes a special kind of person to be an educator. You have to want to be an educator for the right reasons. Your reasons for becoming an educator have an effect on your performance and also in the amount of knowledge you students gain from you.

The belief, that learning is not only something that is taught but it is also something that you get from your experiences in life, is also implied in the reading. I do believe this is true. There are just some things that you must experience for yourself to learn something. One example would be riding a bicycle. You can watch someone riding a bike for a long time but you do not truly learn until you get on that bike and fall a couple of times. That's learning from experience. I also think there are some things that you learn just from listening to people. One example of this would be learning your colors. We know our colors as they are today because someone told us that blue was blue and that red was red. We trusted that people were not lying about our colors and that they knew what they were talking about. That is why it is important to know what you are teaching and to be familiar with your subject area. If you give a student the wrong information, they may have a hard time trusting that everything else you tell them might also be wrong.

You also need to get to know your students. This will enable you to find ways to reach the student with the information you want him or her to gain. If you can find ways to relate your subject to your students' interests, your chances of them mastering the skill are much greater than if you just follow some idea you got out of a book.

Custom Essays on Allagory of the Cave

In my work, I deal with many students who I think are just afraid to be educated. They are afraid that they will not succeed. They are afraid of failure because someone that they looked up to has told them that they are a failure. If they heard that many times they might have begun to believe it and therefore are afraid to learn. These students are also very reluctant to accept change. We need to give our students the help they need to adapt to change and show them that change can be a good thing. We need to show them that it is all right to come out of the cave and that it is all right if they stumble at first, as long as they get up and try again.

----ORANGEY, A 50S FELINE SUPERSTAR - WITH AN ATTITUDE

One of the most talented cats ever to be captured on

celluloid was a short-haired, fourteen pound male ginger

tabby named Orangey. In 151 he starred in a film entitled

Order Custom Essay on ----ORANGEY, A 50'S FELINE SUPERSTAR - WITH AN ATTITUDE:

Rhubarb, as well as many other films. His acting career

lasted from the early 150s through 16, and during that

time, he won more awards than any other cat in Tinseltown

Orangey was beautiful, photogenic and such a handsome hunk,

perfect for the big screen. But it seems that this pretty

boy with all his glamour and movie-star qualities was not

much fun on the set.

Orangey was short-tempered, hard to work with, and down

right nasty! Nobody liked him, not even his trainer,

Frank Inn. One movie executive found his antics so

aggravating that he called him The Worlds Meanest Cat.

During one film shoot, guard dogs were placed at the doors

of the movie studio to keep him from running away.

Despite his reputation as a repugnant puss, this cat named

Orangey cat could certainly act! He was considered by many

to be one of the best animal actors in the world. He is the only cat to have won the

Patsy Award twice, an honor given for the best performance

by an animal in a movie.

Orangey won the award for his title role in Rhubarb,

a movie about a cat who inherits a fortune, and buys the

Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. Based on a novel of the

same title written by H. Allen Smith, the film included

human super stars such as Ray Milland, Jan Sterling,

Leonard Nimoy and Gene Lockhart.

To keep him from bolting from the set during the shooting

of his films, the crew kept Orangey on a leash. Mostly, the

leash was to keep him from harassing and annoying everyone

around him, especially his four-legged stand-ins.

Orangey went on to win another Patsy Award for his most

outstanding performance as Cat in the film Breakfast at

Tiffanys starring Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Buddy

Ebsen, Mickey Rooney, and Patricia Neal.

The film is based on a novella by Truman Capote. Cat is

Hollys (Hepburns) beloved pet, whom she calls a poor

slob without a name.

Orangey has some pretty big scenes in the film. He had

to jump on Hepburns back as she lay in bed, leap off

Peppards shoulders onto a shelf, and then look quite

pathetic as he gets drenched in a downpour. If you

remember, this scene, at the end of the movie, shows Holly

throwing Cat out into the streets of New York City to

prove that she is a free spirit, not attached to anyone

or anything.

But, minutes later, she has a change of heart and regrets

what she has just done to Cat. She runs

through the streets and alleys in the rain and happily finds

poor, drenched, and almost abandoned, Cat.

Orangeys other major film appearances include a role in

Gigot, starring Jackie Gleason. He also regularly

appeared on TV with Eve Arden and Gale Gordon in the

series Our Miss Brooks.

Movie critics and animal trainers have agreed that Orangey

has stolen the show from his famous human costars in many

of his films. Irascible or not, this cat was a fabulously

talented legendary feline super-star! Does he have his

paw prints preserved in cement or have a star on Hollywoods

walk of fame, I wonder?

Good Morning Ladies and Gentleman

Today we are going to discover a most shocking fact. A fact that been hidden for decades. A secret that is claiming lives of innocent women.

Most people sitting here believe that the rights of women have improved over the last few decades. But unfortunately nothing has really changed for women in the Middle East. In fact the opposite has occurred where Women in Middle East suffer on going violations against their fundamental Human Rights and loss of their dignity is heartbreaking.

First of all, Women in the Middle East are treated as second-class citizens if they are lucky. They have no right to vote, no right to acceptable standard of living, and no right to equal treatment before the law.

Order custom research paper on Women Rights

Secondly, Women in many Middle Eastern countries are proclaimed as properties or possessions that belonged to a male. Women belong to their father as children, and then to their husbands as adults, and then to her sons in their old age. These women have been denied the right to govern their own lives and destinies. Every aspect of their life is arranged for them. From the day they are borne till the day they die. Women in the Middle East have extremely difficult life; they have arranged marriages, have very limited access to education and are brutally worked for twice as many hours as men for one-tenth of the income.

By now you are outraged or at least you're emotionally involved. But I didn't think we have even scratched the surface. There are the crimes that are committed against women every day in the Middle East. These crimes included abuse, slavery, false imprisonment, murder and rape. And that's not even all; Women in Saudi Arabia have been beaten to death because they have failed to give birth to a son." My husband married me after he had beaten his first wife to death for not giving birth to a son." said Salmi (Saudi Arabia).

Statistics researched by Amnesty International show 6% of women murdered in Saudi Arabia by the hands of male family members.6%. In Yemen a staggering 5% of female deaths are due to suicide. In order to understand the great hardship women are going through in the Middle East, you must put you're self in their place to just understand the feeling of being treated like an outsider by your own family and the people you love the most.

By now you must be wondering what the police or government are doing to stop the progress of unacceptable treatment that women are subjected to?

Well, unfortunately the police have no authority to stop violence committed against women or even women being killed by the hands of males. This level of state authorized lack of sympathy is typified by the troubles of anonymous Saudi Arabian women. She says

" My husband beat me for no reason, he just felt like it. When I told the police, they told me to go back to my husband and stop making up stories."

In Yemen women plead with police to stop their husbands from killing them. Unfortunately police have no power to stop husbands killing their wives, but they have permission to hang women for defending her self against her often violent, aggressive and brutal husband.

Finally, Women in the Middle East have been denied their Fundamental human rights and have been robbed of their dignity. This veil of oppression can only be removed by education of both the international community and the Middle Eastern cultures about the equality of all people.

Us women we should protest against the terrible treatment that women in the Middle East are receiving!

After all we are all human.

"Macbeth"

In the play "Macbeth", blood is the most recurrent image in the play. Blood reoccurs many times showing death, guilt and foreshadowing what is to happen to Macbeth.

"Where's that knocking? What's happened to me, that every noise scares me? Whose hands are these? They're plucking my eyes out! Is there enough water in the oceans to wash my hands of this blood? No! More likely my hands will stain the vast green seas boodred." -Macbeth (to Lady Macbeth)

All of the blood is getting to Macbeth because he killed Duncan. Now he is feeling guilty for what he has done. He doesn't completely realize what he has done and that the cannot change the fact that he killed Duncan. Macbeth's hands are all bloody and stained and he is delirious.

"To be thus-a king-is nothing. I must be safely thus. I fear Banquo deeply. In his regal nature, there's a ruling element to be feared. He's daring; and with that fearless quality of mind, he has a wisdom, which guides his courage to act in a safety. I fear no one but him. While he's around, I feel constrained it's said Mark Antony felt the same way about Caesar. Banquo scolded the Sisters when they first told me I'd be king, and ordered them to speak to him. Then, like prophets, they hailed him as the father of a line of kings. On my head they placed a sterile crown and put a barren scepter in my hand-to be wrenched from me by a stranger, instead of handed to a son of Banquo's offspring. For them, I've murdered the gracious Duncan. Turned my peace sour merely for them. And surrendered my immortal soul to the devil-to make them kings! The sons of Banquo, kings! Rather than that, I challenge fate to the death!"- Macbeth

In this paragraph, Macbeth is talking about how Banquo is a threat to him so he must get rid of him. He also speaks of how he killed Duncan for him. When Macbeth talks about killing Duncan, he speaks as if killing Duncan for Banquo was trying to help him, but now he wants to kill Banquo to help himself. The line where he speaks of how Mark Antony felt the same way about Caesar portrays blood in a way because of the fact that Macbeth relates to them.

"My name's Macbeth."

-Macbeth

"No-not even if the name you use is hotter than any known in hell."

-Young Siward

" No, nor more frightening!"

- Macbeth

"You're lying, you odious tyrant! I'll prove it's a lie with my sword!"

-Young Siward

This is the scene when Young Siward and Macbeth are arguing because Young Siward doesn't like Macbeth and so he tells him but Macbeth doesn't react to what he is telling him. While already in the anger and the guilty along with greed, Macbeth doesn't like what he is hearing so he decides to do away with Young Siward as well.

"Of all men, I've avoided you! Get back! There's too much blood of yours on my soul already!" Macbeth

Macbeth is speaking to Macduff and what he means is that every time him and Macduff are around each other, Macbeth does something wrong or something bad happens. "I won't surrender, to kiss the ground beneath young Malcome's feet and to be taunted by the curses of the rabble. Even if Birnam Wood has come to Dunsinane, and you are my opponent-not born of woman- I'll keep fighting to the end. I throw my warlike shield before my body. Fight on, Macduff, and damned be the one who first cries, "Stop, enough!" Macbeth

In this quote, Macbeth and Macduff battle on like the enemies they have become. Macbeth has reached his final step of anger and wants to get rid of the next most powerful one who could end it all for him. But, Macbeth gets killed by Macduff in their sword fight and Macduff decapitates him. Malcome becomes the new king.
