September 11, 001, changed the way I look at life.

I awoke to the disruptive blare of the alarm clock that signaled the start of another monotonous morning schedule. Under the dim glow of shining stars and with traffic lights as my guide, I headed down to the church for a droning class of scripture study. Life was good; I felt invincible.

My mother drove into the parking lot to pick me up as usual in her white Explorer--she appeared neither rushed nor alarmed. Her demeanor revealed nothing to indicate the devastation of the news she delivered. Her exclamation, "It's the start of World War III," rocked my body. I could not register her words as she explained what had happened. I tried to picture the two buildings, symbols of capitalism, colliding planes, and fireballs,a vision of Armageddon. I thought about Hollywood's version--"Independence Day"--but this was the real thing, no creation from tinsel town. I tried to absorb the prattle of radio reports and at the same time grasp my mom's babble as we drove home.

This day would be devoted to understanding what had happened to make my mom think that a world war would be started based on what had occurred earlier in the morning. Was it really the beginning of the end?

I immediately turned on the television; it would remain on for the rest of the day. The image of two towers, like two giant tombstones, one burning from the impact, one intact, assaulted my vision, creating a permanent imprint. Minutes later a plane struck the second tower, creating a massive scar in its side. It occurred to me that what happened might have been a coordinated effort. Was someone from another country behind this, or were there citizens of the United States willing to kill thousands of people to prove a point?

Information from the radio both enlightened and confused me as I negotiated the familiar turns on my way to Bullard. News that the first tower had fallen, sending out a cloud of dust like a volcano, greeted me as I arrived at my first period class. How many people just died? When had we ever been attacked on our homeland? History had taught me about the infamy of December 7, 141. Was Pearl Harbor to World War II as the towers were to World War III? I had many more questions than answers.

Students huddled in groups to hear the news for the first time or to grasp "old" information. The expressions on their faces, like masks from a Greek tragedy, matched the way I felt. Televisions provided images and background noise to all irrelevant activities. The teacher attempted to divert our attention by starting a lesson plan. There was no hope. Eyes were glued to the "box." Eventually the teacher stopped trying to teach and was likewise snared by the television's web of shock and terror. Any bit of news proved all-absorbing.

Information from the media would continue to bombard and muddle my mind for days and weeks to come. What might come next was impossible to predict. Safety and security vanished with the onslaught of each new revelation of horror. My thoughts had a new edge. September 11 had sharpened my senses, heightened my defense and increased my apprehension. The future lay before me like a bad dream and I knew that life as I knew it had evaporated.

Future. When one hears that word, one thinks of towering skyscrapers piercing the clouds, swift hovercrafts emitting beeping noises, and servile robots on wheels. But a thought that is not popular amongst human minds is what the future holds in store for animals, much less jackass penguins. The purpose of this paper is to inform you of the possible adaptations that the jackass penguin could evolve in the future. As you will see, the environment is a major component in evolution. Let us take a journey into the year 07 . . .

The jackass penguin used to live off the coast of South Africa. It did not live on the mainland because of the dangers of predators. Because of global warming, the polar ice caps melted (as we all know) and caused many of the islands to be covered by the rising ocean levels. This left only the larger islands protruding from the ascending waters, causing the penguins to spend more time underwater. The jackass penguin, in turn, has adapted to its aquatic lifestyle by evolving certain body parts.

One thing that the jackass penguin has had to adapt to is the increase in temperature as a result of global warming. A larger head is used to give off body heat. The lighter color of the fur absorbs less heat while the reduced number of fat layers help to keep in less warmth.

The jackass penguin has also had to adapt to a more aquatic life. A larger beak is used to catch more fish as it is harder to catch them than ever before (they, too, have evolved to better survive against predators). Stiffer wings and larger webbed feet help the penguin swim faster, while a stronger tail aids in steering. Furthermore, a streamlined body gives the penguin more freedom in the water.

Write my Essay on The Effects of the Environment on the Jackass Penguin

You may be wondering how the jackass penguin evolved from a chubby, dark creature into a one adapted to its environment. The answer lies in Darwin's theory of natural selection, where organisms that are more fit are more likely to survive and produce offspring. As the jackass penguin's surrounding's changed, penguins that retained heat or were not suited for swimming were unfit and died out, whereas the small number of penguins with lighter fur and better swimming capabilities survived and reproduced. This "natural selection" has caused the population of ideally suited penguins to rise and the number of unfit penguins to decline.

And so we see how the jackass penguin has evolved to better survive in harsh environments. Join us next time, where we will be discussing the jackass kookaburra...

Organisms evolve when environment changes. The jackass penguin, for example, could evolve a larger head, lighter color, and less layers of fat to regulate heat, and a larger beak, stiffer wings, a stronger tail, larger webbed feet, and a streamlined body for swimming. Thus, we see that the environment is the most important factor in the evolution of an organism.

The Great Society

The economy leading up to the year of 164 was doing very well. Unemployment was below four percent Gross National Product was growing at approximately six percent. Inflation was less then three percent. The setting was ripe for the president to create "A War on Poverty."

In the beginning of LBJ's tenure as president he continued Kennedy's work in developing programs to help society in many aspects. The programs that he devised were called the Great Society. Lyndon proposed "A War on Poverty" with the Economic Opportunity Act. The programs under the act consisted primarily of the Job Corps; community action programs; volunteers against poverty; financial aid to low income families; and Medicare. Sub programs included racial injustice and education.

The Job Corps were created to help younger students to advance in careers who were unable to go to college for one reason or another. It developed the skills that they had and prepared them for a better quality of life through work study and work training programs. The program is still in existence in 00 and helps over 70,000 students a year.

Write my Essay on The Great Society for me

All over the country Community Actions Programs would be used to attack poverty at the home level. Each community would have its own program tailored for that community. The residents for the community would develop the plan to attack poverty and stomp it out. This was a good plan as it would be created by the people who it was affecting the most. The government would not have to come in and create a fix for multiple places. A plan would be provided to the government by the people who were affected. That way the problem would be specialized to the area and not just generalized to cover the whole country. After approval plans were mostly funded by the government to get them started.

Where would all these people come from for the Job Corps and the Community Action Programs? Volunteers against poverty would be requested by the government to help in the undertaking of poverty in America. These people were trained and used where necessary to help end poverty.

Financial aid was provided to lower income families. People who needed to be re-trained in another field could support families with the aid besides learning a new trade. This would enable them to earn more money to support families without the aid of the government.

To watch over and implement The Economic Act, LBJ created a new position to report directly to him on the progress of the programs. Sargent Shriver was appointed to this Office of Economic Opportunity. He would work with the new programs and existing agencies on the War on Poverty.

The last issue of major concern addressed in this paper is the non-existence of medical aid to the elderly. In the sixties there was concern over the amount of people in the country who were unable to attain good health care once they were retired. Insurance was expensive and going up. Older people that were ill depended on children to help out in the event of a devastating illness. Medicare was implemented to insure that the elderly would receive good heath care at lower expense to themselves.

The softball field is a place that I can go to forget all the stresses of my life. After a long day of school or work, I drive over to my high school softball diamond and sit on rd base. During my 4 years in high school I played varsity earning two most valuable player awards and many league titles. After 4 years of working hard, I was offered a full athletic scholarship to play softball at the college level. The softball field symbolizes a place of purity, a freedom of mind, and personal achievement. I can honestly say that the softball diamond is my most comfortable place in the world. The softball diamond is the most invigorating atmosphere when the senses are at full intensity.

My first step on the field during my first college game was an experience I will never forget. The senses I experienced should have been so familiar but they seemed foreign to me. As I walked to my position, I could smell the freshly cut grass in the outfield. It was so refreshing because I knew that the game was close to beginning. The crowd was cheering in the stands while many of them watched their college freshmen walk onto the field for their first college softball game. The crushed brick had a different sent compared to the red sand in my high school field, I felt like it was the real thing.

As I reached rd base, I caught a whiff of the aroma of the Tiger Balm that I applied on my sore arm muscle before the game began. The minty fresh fragrance cleared my nostrils as I prepared myself for the approaching hour and a half. As a gamely ritual, I reached down and grabbed a hand full of the infield and held it there for a moment. The texture as a whole was soft and much of it fell through my fingers. For just a moment I felt like I was back in high school playing with my friends from grade school. The thought made me feel secure and I had a sensation of belonging. The old dry leather of my glove filled my nostrils as I bent it into my desired shape.

I was in my position ready and waiting when the umpire yelled out, "LET'S PLAY BALL." The feeling of anxiety surged through my veins like arctic water, but I knew that all my hard work was just moments away from paying off. The children with their mothers started screaming and the man on the loud speaker said the name of the first batter. She stepped to the plate and slapped her bat against the metal cleats on her shoes to empty the dirt from the bottom. After the first pitch my uneasiness slightly went away.

The rest of the game flew by and I can not even remember the details, but those first 10 minutes are still so vivid in my mind. I will never forget the feeling of complete numbness over my entire body while experiencing something so amazing. The senses of a softball game are so important to me because of the event. Sometimes when I am walking down the street and a woman passes me wearing a certain perfume, my mind takes me back to when my first grade teacher was explaining how to read. Senses can make something so short and unimportant into something that will never be forgotten. From the smell of the cut grass, to the screaming little children, the softball will forever be in my mind as well as in my heart.

The march occurred in Derry on 0th January 17, and was illegal as the Stormont Parliament banned all The march was by the Catholic Nationalists who were demonstrating for Catholic rights and protesting against internment. Internment was where the police could arrest anyone who they suspected were involved in the IRA without trial. This angered many Catholics, as many that were arrested were not involved with the IRA.. Some eyewitnesses said the number was around 0, 000 however the Widgery report says it was between 000-5000. The eyewitnesses think this because they were at the march so therefore think this. It could be seen as valid as the eyewitnesses had attended the march. However one could argue that this source is unreliable as the eyewitnesses are biased as they are Catholics and want to play up the numbers to show that there is strong opposition by the Nationalists against the Stormont government, that brought about internment. The Widgery report has claimed the amount of people was a lot less than stated by the eyewitnesses. They this due to evidence given by people who were there perhaps the army, or Police. This interpretation could be valid and reliable as the army was at the march so would probably know the amount of people there. However, this interpretation could be unreliable because the Widgery report' sources are probably mainly Protestants so therefore are biased so hence will play down the number.

A riot developed and many eyewitnesses say that this riot was not very intense. The witnesses think this because they were at the march so therefore could be reliable. However one would probably say that it is slightly unreliable because the eyewitnesses are probably so will try to sympathise with the fellow protesters. Some recent information suggests that one person was killed and the army claims that it was in response to a single shot by the IRA and the army thought the person who shot was the man they killed. However, there were no weapons found at the scene of the shooting. The army thinks this because the soldiers involved had told them this so this source could be reliable. However many would argue this source unreliable as the army are biased. One could say the army is trying to defend its actions so therefore saying the man killed had shot could justify the killing. At around .55pm the riot on William Street began breaking up as paratroopers were given permission to begin an arrest operation. . The 1st Battalion Parachute regiment launched an operation to clear all remaining protesters and were specifically told not to continue the battle down Rossville St. (logbook of Brigade supports his). At approximately 4.10 PM soldiers of the above regiment began opening fire at protesters on Roseville St. The shooting ended in 1 people dying and shooting occurred in four main places. The British army also says that 1 soldiers fired their weapons and shot 108 rounds in total. Most of these facts are agreed however the events that occurred on Rossville St. It is unclear and events that occurred are disputed. The soldiers claim they were under pressure from gunfire and nail bombs bun eyewitness accounts say that guns or bombs were used by the people who died and that no guns or bombs were fo

To begin with I had quite a bit of trouble finding any resource for information on the Internet. That raised the immediate question on whether or not there is any real interest from the Canadian Government or individual bodies on the topic of renewable resource research at all. But the future is not quite as bleak as that. There are several laboratories conducting research on this field. One is finding ways to make a hybrid diesel fuel called biodiesel. Another is even trying to use plants as a way of creating a renewable resource.

My first point was that there where not that many articles that I could find that had much relevance to this topic. That immediately made me decide that there needs to be more effort in this field of research. This is a) a possibly very lucrative industry with todays smarter consumer b) this is beginning to become a very need thing that is not having as much dependence on fossil fuels, which I might add are killing our planet. So all in all the people high up in either the government or the companies with enough money to sponsor such research are not taking the interest they should in this so dire a situation we are in.

However there is some (I say that very reservedly) interest in this topic. For example there is a research team at Guelph University that has come up with a way to make a type of bio-diesel. The bio part is because it is made up of different biodegradable components such as recycled restaurant fat, soybeans, and vegetable oils. The product is not on the market just yet but this is a major step in the right direction as far as using fossil fuels is going. Even though the bio-diesel has been proven safe on engines the production and supply is very low. Almost a supply on demand. This has led to the creation of a hybrid fuel that is anywhere form two to twenty percent bio diesel. Even with just two percent biodiesel that means a twenty-five percent increase in soybean production that's more than 600,000 acres. Even still interest in biodiesel has occurred just recently in Ontario. Its gone from nobodys interested to nobody can keep up.

Another laboratory has been conducting research on plants and how they limit oxygen and energy to the environment. Since the lab has been doing so they have come up with several new technologies that analyze the concentration of oxygen and its movement from the plant to intercellular bacteria. This has led to the discovery of how the plant moves energy to the bacteria as well so then that made the researchers wonder if they could use this as a renewable source of energy from the plants themselves. This technology is still in its infancy.

So in conclusion I feel that there should perhaps be more interest in this subject but that doesnt mean there isnt any. However when it comes to blowing up old restaurant fat in our engines to make them move or letting plants grow to create energy we are on the right track and hopefully we (as humans) shall come to our senses and realise that we are in trouble. I just hope that happens before its too late.

In the poem "My Identity" by Helen Bell, the persona attempts to convince the reader that in order to be a true Australian one needs to have been born in Australia of 'Anglo-Celtic' parents, speak Australian English, and dress and act in a certain way. She constructs all those who live in Australia but do not comply with these standards that she says as being foreign. Bell conveys these views through the first person point of view of the persona, the contrasting images of different types of 'Australians' and the language that the persona uses.

Bell impresses her views of the 'true Aussie' on the reader through the images she creates of what Australian life should entail. Her persona begins by describing herself as a white Australian, one who speaks Australian English, 'dressed like an Aussie', likes to have a barbie, and likes to swim and fish. This gives the reader the impression that you can only be a 'true Aussie' if you are white, can understand and use Australian slang words and abbreviations, and loves to be in the 'great outdoors'. It also means that Australians have to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, and be quite sociable. The poem is written in 'Australian English' with the persona using slang to describe herself as a 'dinky di Aussie'. The free use of slang and abbreviations helps to construct the attitude that Australians are casual and relaxed with everybody. This attitude is further impressed upon the reader by the use of run-on lines throughout the poem. They give a sense of a calm and peaceful environment in which true Australians should be living their lives.

Bell used another set of images and sounds to describe what cannot be deemed truly Australian. The contrasting imagery that is used by Bell describes the Aboriginal people dressed in their 'foreign clothes' who do not speak English. The reader accepts that this image cannot be of a true Australian because it is different to the first image we are presented with, thus adopting Bell's views. The Aboriginal people and people from other origins are referred to as the 'others' and their clothing are deemed 'foreign'. There is emphasis put on 'THEY' in the last to convey a sense of them being completely separated from the world the persona is accustomed to. The idea that the only true Australians are the white Australians is further emphasised through Bell's use of sound and language collaboratively with the images created.

The reader is encouraged to accept the stereotype of a 'true Aussie' created by Helen Bell through the use of first person point of view. Because the reader has no other contrasting views, they are compelled to accept the attitudes offered by the persona. The first person point of view makes the poem seem more like a reflection though, and the persona is constantly questioning her beliefs, although she does back them up with her analysis of a 'true Aussie'. The point of view contributes to the stereotypical representation of an Australian in the 0th century.

Helen Bell encourages the idea that in order to be a truly Australian you need to speak English, dress like most people in Australia, love the outdoors, and be sociable and relaxed. She constructs this stereotypical representation through the collaborative use of imagery and sound, and the first person point of view. My Identity by Helen Bell
