Have you ever wondered if you are really in control of your life? Did you ever think that someone else, such as "big brother", has your life already planned out for you? Well, if you say no, there is no need to fret! There have been many examples of pre-destination in our lives.

A great man named Euripides once stated, "I have found power in the mysteries of thought, exultation in the chanting of the muses; I have been versed in the reasoning of men, but fate is stronger than anything I have known." I disagree with his statement that fate is stronger than anything he knows. In any piece of literature or drama, especially back in the time of Ancient Greece, you can see many different examples of pre-destination. If you look even closer, you will notice that many ideas of pre-destiny are incomplete. Many different aspects of destiny are left shrouded in a cloud of mystery…

First of all, in the move The Matrix, pre-destination plays a big role. The Matrix, which is a life-simulating program developed by robots, allows robots to stimulate the minds of humans in order to create a power source; one which they can fuel themselves with. While they are "plugged in," humans are in semi-control of their virtual life. They can jump, talk, sing, blink, and do everything else that a regular person can do. They are destined to think that the virtual world is the real world. But, if there are some who have been "unplugged" from the life simulation, then isn't destiny a breakable course? These confusing, abstract ideas are all plot holes in the idea of pre-destiny.

In the book The Giver, Jonas's life was very unique. Therefore, he was decided to be The Giver, the one who keeps all the memories of the people, of color, of weather, of war, and everything else that others can't have. The Utopian society fated everyone to specific jobs; jobs that would relate to their childhood. Jonas was supposed to stay in the utopia and pass on the memories to the next person. He didn't do that. Instead, he ran away with his little brother and passed him memories of calmness, fullness, and other things to keep him calm and quiet. Jonas broke the fate of "the council" and ran away. This is another example of how fate is a very unstable, abstract thought and that you must be able to have control, otherwise all current examples of fate will be wiped out.

Cheap University Papers on Fate

Fate is a very vague term, sharing its source with destiny. Both have a specific meaning, but trying to put it as a label on something would prove to be a futile act. One is in control of their life; something is not in control of them. This is why I do not believe in pre-destination, or any other related idea.

The Scarlet Letter Symbolism-Triads

A bald eagle is a symbol for America. A lion is a symbol for of courage. A symbol is a sign or token of something, but when it comes to literary symbols things become more complex. The symbols in literary work do not have easily recognizable meanings. The meaning of the symbol comes from the works from which they are a part of. The use of triads, sets of threes, in The Scarlet Letter can mean birth, life, and death or beginning, middle, and end.

The characters within the novel itself create triads. Hester, Pearl, and Mr. Dimmesdale are one major triad. This set of three represents birth, life, and death. Pearl has been born; Hester has life with the bearing the Scarlet A, and Dimmesdale is dying with the guilt of containing his secret. When Hester is standing on the scaffold holding three-month-old Pearl in her arms, the magistrates demand the name of the father be declared. Dimmesdale himself calls over the balcony, " Be not silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were to step down from a high place, and stand there beside thee on thy pedestal of shame, yet better were it so, than to hide a guilty heart through life" (65).

The scaffold scenes also created a triad seeing that three times Hester and Pearl stand on the scaffold. What is symbolic of this triad is that it stands for another meaning of the symbol triads. These scenes show the beginning, middle and the end. The beginning of the book Hester was brought up to the scaffold for recognition of her sin. "Knowing well her part, she ascended a flight of wooden steps, and was thus displayed to the surroundings multitude, at about the height of a man's shoulders above the street" (54). Then in the middle of the book Dimmesdale walks to the scaffold in the middle of the night and sees Hester and Pearl walking and calls them up to the scaffold. "Come up hither, Hester, thou and little Pearl" (14). The three hold hands on the scaffold while the town is still sound asleep. In the end of the book Hester, Pearl, and Dimmesdale stand together on the scaffold once again, while Dimmesdale reveals himself as the father of Pearl. " Come, Hester, Come!" "Support me up yonder scaffold" (48).

Like all literary symbols the symbol takes on it's meaning within the text. In The Scarlet Letter triads can be a symbol for birth, life, and death as in the triangle of Hester, Dimmesdale, and Pearl, but also, triads can stand for the beginning, middle, and end as in the three scaffold scenes.

In today's society, the relationship between mother and child varies in each case. Some children get along well with their mothers while others never receive the affection they need. In the play Exits Exist by Paul M. Kelly, The image of the mother that is presented is controversial. The characters view their relationship with their mother very differently.

While she is portrayed as a mother who neglected her son Gabriel and blaming him for the father's death, she is also portrayed as a good mother by her daughter Diana, who was just under much stress after the father's death. Her image is sustained throughout the play when Gabriel reveals to the audience how he was treated by his mother. "…I was to blame. It was all my fault…" (Act I, Scene ).

She is portrayed as a terrible mother when Gabriel says that he was blamed in front of family and friends. "…when we were all in the backyard…yelling and screaming at me in front of everybody…" (Act I, Scene ). Gabriel never forgot that the reason he was blamed was because his father was rushing to get to his graduation. Whenever Gabriel speaks of his mother, he speaks with a tone of hate. He remembers how he was treated after his father's death and hates the fact that he was blamed for something that he couldn't control. He was forced to grow up without the affection of a mother, instead he grew up with guilt over his father's death and never received an apology.

Diana, however, speaks with a more sympathetic tone whenever her mother is brought up in conversation. It is revealed to the audience that her mother was very sick and suffered much throughout her sickness and the one thing she wanted to do before she died was to apologize to Gabriel for the blame of his father's death.

Cheap University Papers on Exits Exist

Throughout the play, the mother is never shown and is not there to defend herself from the views of either of her children. The mother being presented through the views of her children and their memory of growing up with her makes the story more dramatic since the reader does not know which of the characters are over exaggerating. It allows the reader to create their own perception of the mother since the story does not lean towards one point of view.

Children have different images of their mother as they grow up due to how they were raised. In Exits Exist, Diana and Gabriel had very different perceptions of their relationship with their mother. While Gabriel describes her as a horrible mother, Diana describes her as a good one. The mother is not present in the play to support either of her children's perceptions of her, which allows the reader to make up their own.

In Christina Rosetti's " Goblin Market" Rossetti examines a young girls curiosity with the unknown along with the danger and consequences of feeding into that curiosity.

With the beginning of "Goblin Market" establishes the lure of temptation, as we are greeted with "Plump unpecked cherries" and "Bloom-down-cheeked peaches" This can be paralleled to that of Eve and the forbidden fruit in the Garden. Initially Laura states that "We must not look at goblin men/ We must not buy their fruits" just as Eve initially states that "Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it". However when Laura sees the luscious fruit and Eve sees that the tree is pleasant to the eyes both forget their initial resistance to the temptation. As both of these women partake of their respective "fruits", the consequences for both women is .a lost of innocence. While Eve is banished from Eden, Laura's punishment for her loss of innocence is to become "sick". In this respect Rossetti parallels Laura's downfall with that of Jeanie, who also "ate the goblins fruits" and eventually died. It should also be noted that Jeanie should have been a bride, however, once she has experienced the incomparable fruit of the goblins and lost her innocence, she can no longer be the virginal maid and therefore can no longer be a "bride". At first it appears that Laura may experience the same fate. On eof the most obvious losses of innocence can be seen in the colour change of Laura's hair. Her hair, which had been so symbolically gold and bright in the early part of the poem, is now "grey", symbolizing that innocence has been lost and Laura must now live the life of an older depressed woman

Laura's decision to taste the fruit can also be viewed through the window of male temptation and the promise of good things in exchange for young girls freedom to live her life freely. The vivid images of "ripe berries and plum cherries" symbolize false security with and endless cash flow. In many societies women tend to succumb to the promise of a "sweet" life without evaluating what the price of that life. This can even be paralleled to young girls and the seemingly exponential increase of teen pregnancies. With these young ladies the promise of endless love and complete satisfaction much like "bright-fire berries and figs to fill you mouth, sweet to taste and sound to eye", seem to appease to a young girls dreams and fantasies.

There are many interpretations of what the actual " Goblin Market" is suppose to symbolize, however the most important moral to obtain form this poem is that temptation in whatever form, can undermine a persons plan for the future.

Recycling in Mozambique

In Mozambique there is not much recycling, apart from the paper recycling factory, which uses chemicals, which are harmful to the environment, which basically means its doing more harm than good. There is also a recycling centre, which is a very small contribution to the conservation of raw materials.

Unfortunately, there is little information of the quantities and types of recycling, practised in Mozambique. Therefore, we cannot fully complete this section of our project. We believe the cause of this lack of information is that there is no significant recycling in Mozambique.

We do know that, located in Mozambique, men and women, collect and clean glass in preparation to be recycled, but there is no proof that the process gets carried out, as year by year the piles of smashed glass grow bigger and numerous.

Do my essay on Recycling in Mozambique CHEAP !

Mozambique, as an alternative to composting, commonly burns the heaps of waste, whether in a landfill or sidewalk. This adds to long term problems, such as the greenhouse affect.

Why recycling should be practised?

ɨ Recycling conserves raw materials such as wood and minerals. If recycling is practised, the number of trees cut down per year will decrease, leading to less deforestation, which will help conserve habitats of animals, and the ecosystem will thrive.

ɨ It helps the economy, by creating new job opportunities.

ɨ It reduces the monetary and environmental costs of landfilling and incineration.

ɨ It conserves energy.

ɨ Landfills won't last, because they fill up, and contaminate groundwater, and release hazardous toxins.

ɨ Incineration does generate energy but Mozambique is ill equipped to use this energy as it does not have the facilities required, and generally waste is burnt in public areas, which can prove hazardous to the health of the surrounding public.

ɨ Mozambique could save a lot of money by recycling aluminium cans, as well as generate energy through the gases that are released from waste.

How Mozambique could accomplish these goals

ɨ The government could provide recycling centres, encouraging the public to recycle, by paying them for their waste.

ɨ The government could place recycling containers that would separate waste, making it easier to recycle.

ɨ Mozambique could build recycling factories, to renew waste materials, without harming the environment.

ɨ They could prioritise to make recycling more important, by encouraging the public to participate.

Canada is multicultural country, and every one is equal and everybody has freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication. But in china it is different. As we could see in novel, people of china and students didn't have freedom of what they believe. Also reporters didn't have freedom of press and communication. And Alex says life in Beijing was so complicate and difficult for him because he didn't have freedom of what he wants to do.

First of all the main point of Forbidden City was the demonstration and strike of Chinese students. The government of china didn't give students freedom of belief, opinion and expression. Civilization people of china could not say negative things about what they don't believe. The government didn't let them to what ever they want to say and what they want to believe, so that's why there were a huge demonstration in China in 18.

Secondly in Forbidden City the reports didn't have freedom of the press and media of communication. They were filming stealthy and they hid their cameras. Government of china didn't let them to taking film and making interviews with Chinese people, also the government didn't let Chinese Tv and news stations to show and say everything happened in demonstration. So reporters didn't have freedom of press and media of communication for what they want to show.

Finally in novel, Alex said his life in china was so difficult and sometimes it was boring. Because he didn't have rights which he has in Toronto. For example, he wanted to see his dad and go to hotel for visiting him, but they didn't let him. Also his Chinese friends and his dad didn't let me to go out wherever he wants. He should stay at hotel for while and it made his life more complicate and boring in china. He couldn't film what ever he wants because the government of china didn't let him and reporters to do that and he always hid his camera. So he didn't have freedom in china and that made him nervous and bored.

So in china students didn't have freedom of thoughts, belief, opinion and expression that's why they strike and demonstrate in Tian An Men Square for change in the government. Also Reporters didn't have freedom of press and media of communication and the government didn't let them to take videos or interviews with Chinese students. Alex didn't have freedom too, he always hid his camera and the older people didn't let him to do what ever he wants or wherever he wants to go.

To Be a Woman

Birth pangs, menstrual cramps, ah, the plights of being a woman! To endure the things we endure and then all the fights we have had to win to gain the freedoms we have, women have proven themselves an incredibly strong sex. In Nikki Giovanni's poem "Woman", she uses symbolism to describe the way women have had to constantly change to become something that gives them pride trying the whole time to please and get support from their male companions. A brief biography of Ms. Giovanni along with a detailed look at the poem itself will show the symbolism she uses to express her point.

Nikki Giovanni was born, Yolande Cornelia Giovanni, Jr. on 14 in Tennessee. She is best noted for her poetry that helped develop the African-American consciousness and pride. She writes mostly children's poems and has also interviewed both James Baldwin and Alice Walker. Her poem being discussed here, "Woman" is one of the few poems that is written concerning the trials that her gender has had to overcome.

Cheap Custom Essays on If I could Catch A Rainbow

The poem uses things in nature to symbolize dreams and goals that this woman wanted to accomplish and she was shot down by her male significant other who would not support her in her endeavors. First she talks about wanting to be a blade of grass, but he would not stand back and be the dandelion, in other words he wouldn't be the lesser in importance in comparison to her. Then, she decided to become a bird, but he wouldn't be the tree for her to sing in.

She also asks to be a web in his corner, a book for him to read, and a bulb for him to grow, all of which he declines to allow her to be. Finally, she says she will be a woman and even though he doesn't want to be the man she needs him to be, she accepts this and becomes what she wishes without his support or approval.

I enjoyed the way she used all this symbolism to highlight how woman have always wanted to be something that brought them and their men pride and joy, however all their aspirations have been nothing more then an obstacle for them, made so by the men that they wanted support from. Men have wanted women to stand back, out of the picture, and all women wanted was to be a shining star in something. Finding that star is what the woman in the poem is trying to do, asking her man to allow her to shine for a brief moment. When he forbids her, she decides to become the one thing that he can't go against, and that is to just be a woman and despite how hard he tries he will always be her complement, because he will always be her man.
