The Conscience of Reverend Dimmesdale

Before the time of even the first psychologists, such as Sigmund Freud, or Karl Jung, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter. Today, it is well conceived that guilt drives such acts as sleepwalking, dreams, visions, and other paranormal events; however, Hawthorne was fairly ahead of his time. He explores the conscience thoroughly, as Shakespeare had done earlier in stories such as Macbeth. In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne uses many literary elements, such as symbolism, syntax, and tone, to show the guilt of Reverend Dimmesdale and the guilt of his own mind.

Help with essay on Dimmesdale's Conscience

To show Dimmesdale's inner guilt, Hawthorne utilizes symbolism. The scaffold in which Hester Prynne walks represents the public humiliation she endures every day, however, one in the same, it is also a sign of Dimmesdale's own anguish. The scaffold, being 'black and weather-stained with the storm or sunshine of seven long years, and foot-worn, too' shows the tortured Dimmesdale in context, as if the scaffold is a sign of his own self-torment. Even though Hawthorne utilizes symbolism as an important factor of displaying Dimmesdale's guilt, another important factor is tone inside the passage.

The tone and attitude that Hawthorne takes to describe the scenario in which Dimmesdale is placed in, however monotonous and verbose it may be, is quite informative. Every guilt trip that Dimmesdale rides on is detailed and vividly portrayed by Hawthorne. In fact, mid-way through the passage, Dimmesdale questions himself, asking 'why, then, had he come hither? Was it but the mockery of penitence? A mockery, indeed, but in which his soul trifled with itself!' showing Dimmesdale as a bit of a paranoid character through Hawthorne's paranoid tone. Not only this, but Dimmesdale also has Remorse and Cowardice on his tail as well, and through Hawthorne's usage of tone, Dimmesdale is quite well portrayed as a tortured and slightly paranoid man. However, the final component to Hawthorne's graceful description of Dimmesdale's guilt would be his thorough use of syntax.

Even through the very script and syntax that Hawthorne uses in The Scarlet Letter shows the inner guilt of Dimmesdale. He utilizes syntax to create a suspenseful mood, displaying the 'obscure night of early May...unvaried pall of cloud[s] muffl[ing] the whole expanse of sky from zenith to horizon.' By doing so, Hawthorne creates the atmosphere that Dimmesdale is alone where he stands, that the entire town is 'all asleep.' It is similar to the trite line seen many times as an example in literature, such as 'it was a dark and stormy night.' Hawthorne also tends to be verbose, and uses this method of syntax to his advantage. Instead of stating that 'the minister had stood there in danger of catching a cold' rather, it is the 'minister might stand there, if it so pleased him, until morning should redden in the east, without other risk than that the dank and chill night-are would creep into his frame, and stiffen his joints with rheumatism, and clog his throat with catarrh and cough; thereby defrauding the expectant audience of to-morrow's prayer and sermon.' The very words and the very positions that the words are placed in shows Hawthorne's utilization of verbosity as a major tool and a trump card for syntax.

Ultimately, Dimmesdale comes to the realization that he is at hand and at fault for Hester Prynne's misery. However, there was not much he could do about it, for the society had already condemned her. The thought remains and engages into Dimmesdale's mind, 'What could I have done to save her?' Hawthorne utilizes this to show and display that indeed, the human conscience is a very delicate aspect in literature, and not to be taken lightly.

Everyone was placed on earth as equals, meaning the stronger do not have precedence over the weaker. The use of animals for human consumption, experimentation and entertainment clearly violates their rights and freedoms. Animals, like humans are born with an equal claim on life, and should be treated with dignity and respect.

Human consumption of animals is immoral and unhealthy. Animals raised for food are subject to barbaric treatment. "Ninety-five percent of the animals we eat are bred for slaughter in cramped, unnatural, and unhealthy conditions (Fraser, 10 ). People don't stop to realize that the packaged meat they are buying was once an innocent animal facing excruciating pain from an inhumane act. Studies of vegetarians show that they're a lot healthier than meat-eaters. According to Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, "The present American diet, with its emphasis on dairy, meat, fish, chicken and oils, accounts for seventy-five percent of our diseases…" (1 ). A reason for humans to take a vegetarian diet into consideration is because it can mean the difference between life and death to individuals at high risk of many common diseases. The whole environment is suffering as a result of meat production. It is becoming more evident that "Overgrazing, water pollution, topsoil erosion and rainforest destruction are a result of factory farming" (Fraser, 10 7). A simple modification in our diets would help preserve our environment and in turn keep humans healthy.

Animal Experimentation is never justified. The use of animals in experiments clearly violates animals' right to live without suffering pain or emotional distress. In the Draize test for eye irritancy, "Solutions of products are applied directly into the eyes of conscious rabbits…the rabbits may suffer extreme pain and often blindness occurs" (Navs, 00 1). Unless people believe that "might makes right," the practice of using animals in medical research is impossible to rationalize. Animal experimentation does not benefit people. One source reports that out of a hundred and ninety-eight drugs tested on animals, fifty-one percent cause human reactions…including death" (Hurley, 1 4). The reliance on animal testing to ascertain the safety of chemicals instils a false sense of confidence that the prescription drugs we take are safe. Medical progress does not need animal experimentation. With the advance of biomedical research technology, "Studies can now be conducted on live human cells…also more effective than animal experiments because they help us understand human reactions to diseases, not animal ones" (Hurley, 1 5). With more advanced biomedical technologies available there is no justification for inflicting pain on innocent animals.

Wild animals need wildlife to survive and should be protected.

An examination of current hunting practices shows that hunting inflicts serious pain on animals. According to Ryland Roos from Friends of the Hunted, "…The trapper arrives to dispatch them, often by primitive and barbaric means such as clubbing, strangulation, or stomping them to death" (1 104). It is morally wrong for humans to go around killing animals as a source of entertainment. Zoos harm animals more than they help them. While acting as a source of human entertainment, "Zoo animals are confined in cramped areas, lack freedom of movement and are denied natural habitat" (Hurley, 1 67). Wild animals, which are not being protected when experiencing these conditions, often end up dying and not able to make it back to the wild. Circus animals suffer for human entertainment. When preparing for performances, "Animal trainers use sharp metal rods to coax circus animals into doing tricks", (Cease, 000 1). Many circus animals end up ill or dead because they can't handle the stress placed upon them.

If morality requires us to refrain from inflicting pain upon other people, then it should require us to refrain from inflicting pain upon animals as well.

Drinking and driving is an all too common occurrence in today's society. It has steadily become one of the most common causes of traffic accidents in the past few years which in turn, has caused the police and highway patrolmen to set up "Ride Program Spot Checks" during the summers, long weekends and holidays on major highways and road ways. When a person is stopped at one of these "spot checks" whether they are drunk or sober, they still have rights. When a person is impaired and causes an accident where they hurt themselves and/or someone else, they are still covered under the Charter of Rights and Freedom and can object to a breathalyzer or can refuse to speak without a lawyer present. But when someone drinks and drives and is responsible for a horrible accident and refuses to have a blood alcohol tests taken, do the doctors and the police have the right to take a sample from that person while the person is in serious medical state or is that a violation of his Rights.

In the case of Wifred Wayne Dersch vs. Her Majesty the Queen, in the Court of Appeal of British Columbia, the accused was charged with Criminal negligence causing death and bodily harm and having the care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs and thereby causing death and bodily harm. The motor vehicle that the accused was in control of crossed the centre line of a highway and collided head-on with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the other car and three other persons, including Mr. Dersch were injured.

A police officer at the site of the accident could smell alcohol on the accused's breath and noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. The accused was transported to the hospital as a result of his injuries, and refused to have a blood sample taken under any circumstances. The doctor, with the help of a surgeon obtained a blood sample from the accused when he was unconscious due to medical reasons. One of the vials of the accused's blood was used for a blood alcohol test, even after the accused had refused to allow the officer the right to have a blood sample taken from his arm under any circumstances.

At his trial, the accused was convicted on all four of the counts he was charged with after the trial judge ruled that the results of the blood alcohol test be admissible in court. The Court of Appeal was called upon to decide whether the results of the blood alcohol test of the accused should have been admissible by the trial judge because the sample was taken without the accused's knowledge.

I went and listened to Dr. Beth Daugherty speak on America's war with Iraq last Thursday. Dr. Daugherty attended the University of Virginia where she received her bachelor's degree and then moved on to earn her master's. She now teaches at a college in Wisconsin. I founder her speech about the war to be very interesting and informative.

Dr. Daugherty's began her speech by highlighting the current situation in Iraq, as well as giving us a few of the latest updates from the battlefield. She then moved on to discuss what she considered four main concerns about the war. These four concerns were the situation in northern Iraq, the situation in southern Iraq, the fight for Baghdad, and the post war administration of Iraq.

The main issue with the situation in northern Iraq deals with the countries northern neighbor, Turkey. Mostly Turkmen and Curtish currently populate Northern Iraq. Turkey is worried about the outcome of Northern Iraq because they could loose control of the region after the war. One problem that we have in this area is that there are not many US troops there right now. The US is waiting to see if the Turkey military will intervene before they send more troops to this region.

The next issue that Dr. Daugherty discussed was the current situation in Southern Iraq. This region is very important since it is where most of our troops are traveling through. The Shea's currently populates this area. They make up about 55 to 60 percent of Iraq's population. The Shea's are predominately an anti-Sadam group, which will most likely ultimately be good for the US. The problem lies in a Shea revolt many years ago in which we betrayed this group. The Shea's have not forgotten this incident and many of them blame the US for their deprivations over the past ten years. The Shea's also view the US and British troops as unwelcome intruders. Another problem in southern Iraq is that the US troops are complaining that they are having to play the role of peacekeepers between different religious groups in Iraq, which is not what they were sent over there to do.

The next issue that Dr. Daugherty addressed was the fight for Baghdad. There are five million people in this city alone and most of them are civilians. The United States has to be careful that they only destroy the enemies in charge rather than the civilians. If there are too many civilian casualties then this will give other countries a bad opinion about the US, which will cause them to be more reluctant to help us. Reports have shown that US troops are having difficulty avoiding street fighting in the city of Baghdad.

The last topic that Dr. Daugherty talked about was the post war administration of Iraq. Iraq has the most complicated government structure in the Middle East. The question is who will run the country after the war. One possibility is an American military administration. This would require about 00,000 American troops to occupy Iraq after the war, which is even more than are currently over there. This would be a very costly and long job for the United States, but it may end up being the best solution. Another option is for Iraq's civilians to form a new government of their own. This would be a difficult task considering the Iraqi people have been under Sadam's dictatorship for a very long time. Many of them do not even know what a democracy consists of, which would make it hard for them to form one. The fact that Iraq is a very poor and uneducated country is another obstacle for them to overcome. No matter what the outcome is enacting a new governmental structure will be difficult, considering that they have never had a peaceful transition of power.

Dr. Beth Daugherty then concluded her speech and opened up for questions during the last half of the presentation. Overall I found her to be an excellent speaker and a very intelligent woman. I thought that her speech was great and I took away much new information from it.

Spanish American War

The cause of the Spanish American War was the fact that Spain mistreated its subjects in Cuba. Demands by Cuban patriots for independence from Spanish rule made U.S. intervention in Cuba a paramount issue in the relations between the United States and Spain from the 1870s to 188. Sympathy for the Cubans ran high in America. The Spanish military commander instituted the concentration camp system in 186; Cubas rural population was forcibly confined to centrally located garrison towns, where thousands died from disease, starvation, and exposure.

Although the majority of Americans, including President McKinley, wished to avert war and hoped to settle the Cuban question by peaceful means, a series of incidents early in 188 intensified U.S. feelings against Spain. The first of these was the publication by Hearst of a stolen letter that had been written by the Spanish minister at Washington, in which that incautious diplomat expressed contempt for McKinley. This was followed by the sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana harbor on Feb. 15, 188, with a loss of 60 men. Although Spanish complicity was not proved, U.S. public opinion was aroused and war sentiment rose. The cause of the advocates of war was given further impetus as a result of eyewitness reports by members of the U.S. Congress on the effect of the concentration camps in Cuba.

Under Spanish rule in Cuba had become progressively harsh and revolution broke out in 185. President William McKinley was under tremendous public pressure to defend U.S. interests on the island. The media, at this point in history represented by the newspaper chains of Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, had a field day stirring up outrage against the Spanish colonial governments many atrocities. As rebel forces gained popular support, the military resorted to moving entire villages into concentration camps and erecting massive cleared and fenced demilitarized zones.

In Cuba the war's only significant land engagement took place on July 1 when American troops seized two strongly defended Spanish garrisons on El Caney Hill and San Juan Hill overlooking the Spanish military stronghold of Santiago de Cuba. Another main event of the war happened on July when the Spanish fleet, which had been blockaded by the Americans at Santiago de Cuba, made a break for the open sea. American ships sank the seven vessels, killing 474 Spaniards and ending four hundred years of Spanish Empire in America. One of the main consequences of the war was the casualties. 5,000 American men died in the war with Cuba.

Peace was arranged by the Treaty of Paris signed Dec. 10, 188 ratified by the U.S. Senate, Feb. 6, 18. The Spanish Empire was practically dissolved. Cuba was freed, but under U.S. tutelage by terms of the Platt Amendment, with Spain assuming the Cuban debt. Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to the United States as indemnity, and the Philippines were surrendered to the United States for a payment of $0 million. The United States emerged from the war with new international power. In both Latin America and East Asia it had established an imperial foothold. The war tied the United States more closely to the course of events in those areas.

The administrations of both President Grover Cleveland and President William McKinley opposed going to war. I think they opposed the war because the Americans had problems of their own. The Americans were in a depression and all they needed was to spend money that they didn't have to fight a war that to some people was really none of the Americans concern. Some people believed that we needed to take care of our problems here in our homeland before worrying about some another person's homeland.

A Comparison of a Tragic Hero from Euripides's Medea and Aeschylus's Agamemnon

Tragic heroes from Greek tragedies almost always share similar characteristics.

Medea from Euripides's play Medea and Clytemnestra from Aeschylus's play

Agamemnon display and share traits common to a tragic hero. They both have a

flaw, hold a high rank or have an extraordinary ability, seek vengeance, and cause their

own downfall anothers suffering. All of these traits are displayed clearly in these

characters and are shown in the textual support.

Both Medea and Clytemnestra had detrimental flaws. Medea was a very

passionate women with a tendency to become easily angered. Her anger from being

wronged by Jason is shown when she wishes "...Jason and his bride/Ground to pieces in

their shattered palace/For the wrong they have declared to do..."(Euripides 6).

Clytemnestras flaw was that she could not see past her own grief, anger, and how her

husband had killed their daughter. Her anger and grief are displayed by her emotional

words, "Like a swan she wailed her last call for her loved one while she

drowned."(Aeschylus). Both of their flaws were indeed tragic, but more to others than

themselves.

Almost all characters from Greek tragedies have some sort of rank or ability,

Medea and Clytemnestra were no exception. Medea was not only a sorceress, but also a

respected citizen. Medea's magic skills are portrayed in the play when she makes a

magical powder that is meant to kill the king daughter. Clytemnestra has no special

ability per say, but she had ruled Argos for ten years in her husbands absence. These

characters ranks and abilities were part of their conflict.

Medea and Clytemnestra both seek revenge for wrongs done to them by thier

husbands. Medea trys to make Jason's life as miserable as possible for everything he did

to her. She kills the most important to him including his new wife and her father. She

even goes as far as to kill her own children to punish him. Her plan of revenge is laid out

as she says, "...I shall make corpses of three of my enemies, father and daughter, and my

own husband."(Euripides 1). Clytemnestra seeks revenge on her husband because he

murdered their daughter as well as took a new wife. Clytemnestra's revenge is very

secretive because she hopes to surprise her husband and catch him off guard. She

explains to Agamemnon the reason for her revenge, "For thy child's absence then/Such

mine excuse, no wily afterthought...No drop is left to shed."(Aeschylus 0). Their

vengeance lost its sweetness when it led to their own pain and suffering as well as their

victims.

After getting their revenge Medea and Clytemnestra become miserable and lead

to their own downfalls and the suffering of others. Medea's life becomes miserable after

she kills her own children and when she realizes she will never know love again. She is

also devastated after being exiled from her home city. Her pain and suffering are made

known when she says, "But I.....but this is an unexpected blow which has befallen me and

has broken my heart."(Euripides). Clytemnestra does not suffer herself in this play but

will later be killed by her son in a later play. Until then she is responsible of causing the

city and her son to suffer immensely.

These two characters are perfect examples of tragic heroes and their traits. Not

only are Medea and Clytemnestra perfect examples, but they are some of the best and

easily seen examples. They follow every step that is found in most Greek tragedies to

cause some sort of conflict and create the drama.

"Too, he wondered why he did not feel some keen agony of fear cutting his sense like a knife. He wondered at this because human expression had said loudly for centuries that men should feel afraid of certain things and that all men who did not feel this fear were phenomena, heroes.

He was then a hero. He suffered that disappointment which we would all have if we discovered that we were ourselves capable of those deeds which we most admire in history and legend. This, then, was a hero. After all, heroes were not much.

No, it could not be true. He was not a hero. Heroes had no shames in their lives and, as for him, he remembered borrowing fifteen dollars from a friend and promising to pay it back the next day, and then avoiding that friend for ten months. When at home his mother had aroused him for early labor of his life on the farm, it had often been his fashion to be irritable, childish, diabolical, and his mother had died since he had come to the war.

He saw that in this matter of the well, the canteens, the shells, he was an intruder in the lad of fine deeds (501)."

Do my essay on Stephen Crane CHEAP !

Stephen Crane was a very prolific writer for his time period. He was a Naturalist who focused on the role of the environment in shaping a character and determining life. Most of his writings dealt with "extreme environments," such as the middle of a battle field. Such graphic scenes allow the reader to receive a glimpse into human nature that they otherwise might not experience. His short story, "A Mystery of Heroism," deals with such an environment. This short story takes place on the front lines of a battlefield during the Civil War. Crane uses very vivid imagery of the battle field that one can almost imagine being there. In the story, the main character, Fred Collins, is egged on by his army colleagues to go fill their canteens with water from a bombed house's abandoned well. This is were Collins begins to wonder what makes a hero, and questions if his actions are heroic. Although Fred Collins is a simple man not free from flaws, it is these flaws that illustrates his humanity which enables him to become a hero.

In Crane's "A Mystery of Heroism," the search of what is a hero is explored. During the course of the story, Collins, a union war solider in the Civil War, desires a drink of well water located across an active battlefield. Going against all his inhibitions and judgments, and going along with peer pressure, Collins decides to make the suicidal trip. Remarkably, he gathers himself together because he knows that he has to come back a "victor". When Collins begins his expedition, he feels as if he is out of place. He believes that he has no right being out in the middle of the battlefield. He finds it hard to believe that he got himself into this situation, but knows that he can not back out now.

This leads to the beginning of the selected passage. At this point Collins is wondering why he does not "feel some keen agony of fear cutting his sense like a knife." In this situation most people would begin to feel a sense of fear, as if they were about to die. But Collins, on the other hand, is not having these feelings, and it concerns him. He wonders this because "human expression had said loudly for centuries that men should feel afraid of certain things and that all men who did not feel this fear were phenomena, heroes". He does not see himself being able to placed in that caliber of man, a hero. He does not think that he is qualified for that title. Does running across a battlefield for a drink of water put him in the category of being courageous.

Fred Collins evaluates his life at this point to disprove the title he loosely put upon himself "No, it could not be true. He was not a hero. Heroes had no shames in their lives". Collins believes that he could not be a hero because he is not free of fault. For one to be considered a hero in his eyes, you can not be selfish, you would need to be genuinely good. Which he believes he is not. In his eyes he is full of fault and not genuinely good.
