The short story "Eveline," by James Joyce, displays many elements that can be defined as formalist. The formalist approach focuses on the language, structure and tone of a work. Examples of formalist elements can be shown throughout the story.

When the story begins, James Joyce addresses to the protagonist by saying "her head was leaned against the window curtains and in her nostrils was the odor of dusty cretonne." Right away I wonder of the tone. When I keep reading, the dust is mentioned again. "She looked round the room, reviewing all its familiar objects which she had dusted once a week for so many years, wondering where on earth all the dust came from." Seems to me, the dust symbolizes the struggle. When someone breathes in the dust you automatically start coughing and chocking. For that reason, the fight is there between your life and death. Eveline wanted to know where all of her difficulties came from to attack her. As I read more into the story, internal conflict within Eveline develops. She tries to decide on where she should leave home or not. She knows that the life in Buenos Aires will be better. Frank "had a home waiting for her" . In Argentina, "she would be married - she, Eveline. However, Eveline also saw leaving home in a negative way. "She had consented to go away, to leave her home. Was that wise? She tried to weight each side of the question. In her home anyway she had shelter and food; she had those whom she had known her life about her" p.405. When all these conflicts come together, I realize that the tone of this story is ambivalence. She is conflicting within herself, and has many reasons to leave home, then suddenly switches to another decision and that is when the ironic tone comes into the text. Like any story that have a struggle between good and bad, I expected the protagonist to win at the end. I expected happiness, I was sure that Eveline will leave with Frank, but the change was very sudden. This makes us think about the structure.

The structure of this story is non-chronological. Joyce jumps from one time to another. He tells us of one happening right before something completely unexpected. The beginning of the story goes right back to Eveline's childhood. Joyce describes how many people Eveline knew that left home, and then transfers us to a different tune where she has to make decision about leaving her home. "Now she was going to go away like the others, to leave her home. Home! She looked around the room…" p.405. The climax of the story is when she suddenly realizes that she has to go. "Escape! She must escape!" p.406. There is a beginning and an end to this story however, the body of the story is all about flashbacks and sudden doings.

There were also many ways how Joyce used the language. "She sat at the window watching the evening invade the avenue" p.404. The author's use of language here shows us that the night was coming, which also makes us wonder if the "darkness" of the story was coming also. Joyce writes that the danger of her father's violence had given Eveline "palpitations." We can see that Eveline obviously was very afraid. "The Evening deepened in the avenue" lets us think if the darkness in the story that foreshadowed in the beginning was near.

By taking a formalist approach, we can examine how all these elements work together to give a coherent shape to a work while contributing to its meaning. Formalist criticism opens up the story and discusses every small happening as a grand part. The tone, language and structure of the work become a center of thinking which make us see the story from a completely different side.

Was Hamlet insane, or only pretending? That is the question. In this play Shakespeare leads Hamlet through a variety of circumstances. Some instances yielding him to a more delusional state, and some instances into a revengeful state. Hamlet, put through a whirlwind of emotions, was faced with the question himself if he was insane. Hamlet in the end, though, will prove to us all he was of clear noble character.

When Hamlet's father died he was distraught, but when his uncle married his mother he became very bitter. Then to see his father's ghost will fill Hamlet with so many issues; that he will have to figure out how to resolve each one. When his girlfriend Ophelia notices that something is bothering Hamlet she tries to ask him; but Hamlet, being unsure about what he is going to do tries to elude the question by acting a little off the wall. This may be because all of the current events in his life have made him uneasy, but I believe he does not want Ophelia to become involved.

After a while he begins to act like he was doing to Ophelia but to everyone. So people began to think something is really bothering Hamlet. Whenever Hamlet talked to his friend he was always speaking and acting clear as day. Hamlet also begins to construct a play precise enough to get his uncle enraged enough to confess his quilt in killing Hamlet's father. During this time he also takes out some of his anger on his mom because she was so quick to marry his uncle after her husband's death. Later on in the story Hamlet is visited by his father's ghost and is told not to take out his anger on his mother, and at this same time his father also displays his doubts in Hamlet's inability to take action.

Hamlet realizes that he is going to have to revenge his father and kill his uncle, but he realizes he will have to carefully construct a plan so that everyone will approve of his father's death. Hamlet gets a chance in a confessional booth to kill his uncle but decides that if he kills his uncle while he is confessing; because his uncle might go to heaven. In the next scene however, Hamlet thinks it is his uncle in the curtains when he is talking to his mother, and so he stabs the person who he thought was his uncle but happened to be Polonius. A strange thing happens next when Hamlet was questioned about where Polonius is he picks a little fun at Polonius's death. So Hamlet goes to England and on his way to England he switches the letter Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are carrying for Hamlet's uncle, which has instructions to kill Hamlet. He replaces it with a letter telling the king of England to kill Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern where two of his old school buddies. I believe Hamlet no longer regarded them as his friends, because they were spying on him for his uncle's sake. I believe he was then clearly justified when he sent Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their death.

Buy cheap Was Hamlet Insane term paper

Eventually Hamlet does come up with the strength to kill his uncle. This happens only after his mother was accidentally poisoned by her new husband. If he was already crazy I would have thought that he would have killed his uncle earlier for his father's sake. When everyone saw that the king killed the queen Hamlet knew he had a clear right to kill his murderous Uncle. So it was not so much that he was not sane enough to handle killing him, but that he wanted people to justify his right to vengeance. I believe though, at times throughout the play when he appeared crazy he was just mentally distraught by all the recent events in his life. So all in all I believe Hamlet was as sane as anyone else would have been in his circumstances. Word Count 668

In Bus No.4

A ghost was humming a tone as she took on the No.4 bus where she was killed a few days age. She didn't know why she hated to leave that bus.

She chose to sit beside a gentleman who was reading a newspaper.

'Good morning!' she said to him politely, but gained no reply. Remember she was merely a ghost and no one could see her or hear her. She shrugged her shoulders and stretched her neck to read the newspaper in the man's hands.

There was a large photo of her in the paper. Under it was a vivid passage on her deed. Generally, it said this rave girl was stabbed to death by a thief who flew into a rage from shame when the girl stopped him stealing an old man's purse. And the author severely criticized the people who didn't offer any help at the scene of the crime.

'What a brave girl! A real hero! But what a pity!' Having read it, the man signed.

The girl was very happy to hear that someone admired her so much.

'Wretch!' The man raised his voice suddenly, which gave the ghost a start.

'How hateful those persons are! Why didn't they have any sense of justice?' H raised his head to express his anger loudly. But suddenly again, he stopped his talk to himself and stared ahead.

The ghost looked ahead along his eyesight curiously, and found a young man was stretching out his hand into a pretty girl's bag.

'A thief!' The ghost held her breath and said in a low voice. She was afraid to frightening the thief away.

She forgot she was a ghost again. The thief couldn't hear her even if she shouted loudly. However, a strange thing happened. It seemed that the ghost could have a secret talk with someone alone at that moment, though both of them didn't realize that. The were too nervous and contrite all their energy on the thief.

'Yes, a thief.' The man answered.

'Go and stop him.'

'I am not that silly. I am sure he is carrying a sharp knife.'

'Don't be afraid. There are so many people on the bus. He cannot hurt you.'

'I won't sick my neck out for that small thing. I'm somebody. There are many important affairs waiting for me to do.'

'Can't you remember what you have said just now?' The ghost left him. She despised his hypocrisy.

She went to the front of the strong man who was pretending to be asleep. However he couldn't hide his thought before a ghost.

'Stand out to stop him' The ghost encouraged him.

'It's none of my business. I don't want to put myself out.' He answered without realizing he was talking to a ghost.

The ghost went to the girl quickly whose wallet was in danger and said, 'The thief will get the wallet soon. You have noticed that, haven't you?'

'Yes, I have. But I dare not stop him. I only expect he can leave me as soon as possible. I don't care about my wallet at all.'

'That's not right.' The ghost cried.

The thief succeeded in getting the wallet at last. Just at that moment, a bright, innocent voice resounded in the quiet bus, 'A thief, Mummy. I saw he¡'

People all cast their eye on a 5-year-old boy whose little mouth was covered tightly by his frightened mother.

The silence in the bus was cold and heavy like a stone. People could only hear their breath. The ghost could hear a sound coming from the thief's heart.

'God! I must run quickly. But I can hardly keep my feet. Be calm. Try to pretend to be fierce. They'll be frightened by me.'

'Driver, stop! I want to get off.' The thief's voice shook as he said that.

'Please don't.' The ghost entreated the driver, 'Drive straightly to the police station.'

'Oh, I don't want to get myself into the trouble. You know, I have the elderly and infant and home¡'

The bus was stopped. The thief got off the bus as bold as brass.

Then, the bus started again. A ghost was left standing in the middle of the road, gazing after the bus's receding figure perplexedly.

Death of a Salesman is a story containing three "extremely" main characters with varying morals. Willy is a salesman who thinks it is more important to be liked then wealthy. Happy, a drunken philandering bum uses women to fulfill his pleasures. As well as Biff, whose rebellious childhood causes him to become a social misfit and financial failure. Will making money and working hard bring you prosperity and happiness? Are friends the most important element in life or is honesty with yourself and others the most important component in life? After reading this story one can review your life and reflect on how you choose to live it.

Happy was a son of Willy's, he was considered a philandering bum by his mother. He lived in an illusory world of promise and hope, caused by his lack of responsibility and his inability towards commitment. Happy squandered all of his money on alcohol and wayward women to fulfill his pursuit of pleasure. He was a man of human infidelity and few principles. This is demonstrated in how he views women saying that "babes" of his intentions were "a dime a dozen". In addition to leaving his father sprawled out on the grimy bathroom floor and saying he was "just some guy". It is difficult to find fulfillment in wayward women and drunken blurs because the reality is you wake up from drunken blurs only to find that the wayward women have left you alone and taken your money. .

Biff another son of Willy's, was considered to be a financial failure as well as a social failure. Biff fell one class short of senior matriculation which would have transformed his athletic talents into a college degree and possibly prowess in the business world. He despised his father's hypocrisy and condemned Happy's immorality. He rejected society standard of "money equals power". Biff also lacked sufficient self confidence and motivation to impress either the business world or the frivolous women of his brother's life. Biff's rebellious childhood led to a disorder causing him to ignore his father's word and rebel. Ultimately his rebellion led to his financial and social downfall.

Willy is a discredited patriarch and misguided capitalist. To circumvent the harsh realities of commerce he tried to maintain an outward appearance that he always "won the day". However this outward appearance was either frivolous or overly brazen. He was a man who taught his sons to fight their hardest and "win at any cost". In contrast he found them cheating and stealing their way out of every job therefore preventing any advancement in the financial world. Willy also pursued an adulterous relationship which became the catalyst for regret, self loathing, familiar disillusionment and eventual suicide. Hence proving that winning at any cost can destroy an individual and honesty with oneself and others is the best policy.

President George W. Bush delivered his "State of the Union" address in January 00 to the members of Congress and the United States public. Within his address, he proposed his ideas to reform and improve the economy. In the previous year, the government attempted to bring the economy out of recession by instating the largest tax relief seen in a generation. His present goals have the purpose to further strengthen America's economy.

His first proposal was to set all the income tax reductions for 004 and 006 as effective and permanent this year. He stated that as soon as he signs this bill, the extra money would begin to show up in workers' paychecks. Bush also promises that he would reduce the marriage penalty and raise the child credit to $1,000 immediately rather than gradually.

Bush believes that when Americans have more money to spend and invest as a result of less taxation, the economy will grow, which will in turn create jobs. "We must have an economy that grows fast enough to employ every man and woman who seeks a job. After recession, terrorist attacks, corporate scandals and stock market declines, our economy is recovering…yet it's not growing fast enough, or strongly enough. With unemployment rising, our nation needs more small businesses to open, more companies to invest and expand, more employers to put up the sign that says, 'Help Wanted.'" (George W. Bush, "State of the Union").

Bush is proposing this tax relief for all Americans who pay income taxes to help the economy immediately. Since Congress has already passed the reductions for the future years, Bush believes it could be even better to have them in effect today. Another proposal was to only tax a company on its profits, not the shareholders. By ending double taxation of dividends, he hopes to increase investor confidence. Increased investments, along with lower taxes are meant to help the economy expand with more jobs.

Custom Essays on Fiscal Policy

Bush's second proposal was for "high quality, affordable health care for all Americans." (George W. Bush, "State of the Union"). His first idea for reform is within Medicare. He believes that giving seniors increased control over their choice of health plan will give them a renewed sense of confidence in the system. His budget will provide an additional $400 billion for the reformation and strengthening of Medicare.

President Bush and his Republican supporters are very optimistic about the future of his economic policy proposals. He seems to be very confident about our economy in general, and America's ability to pull it out of its recession. "I am positive about…our economy. I feel very optimistic about it, because I look at the facts." (President George W. Bush, Aug. 5, 00).

Despite President Bush's optimism concerning his new economic proposals, the democrats in the Senate weren't quite as impressed. The Democrats voted to cut his proposed tax cut by more than half. The Congressional Budget Office says that his plan would have "virtually no effect on the size of the economy." Senate defeated Bush's proposal with the votes of all 47 Democratic Senators, along with Republican Senators. They voted to cut his $76 billion plan to $50 billion.

In spite of this defeat, there is still a push for the all of the plan's aspects to be passed. Ari Fleischer has used to military conflict in Iraq to sell the plan, stating that it would ensure jobs for the military to come home to at the end of the war. Yet, the Congressional Board Office still holds to the fact that his proposals would only raise or lower the level of output by less than 1% from 004-01. With all of these contradicting arguments, it will be interesting to see what will eventually come of Bush's economic policy proposals.

Introduction

Open with impact

Have you ever met a person who talks too much, complains all day long and is very negative?

Haven't you felt like smacking this person a couple of times? Well you can imagine how my friends and family used to feel.

Focus This class has been very helpful for me in the sense that it's been a counseling session and in a weird way, and an anger management class.

Connect with your Audience Everyone here can say they know something about everyone in this class that they didn't know before due to the little talking sessions we've had.

Preview We all have learned different ways to communicate with people, but the real question is, are we ever going to use this again?

Body

Main point #1 What I use in my everyday life is to control my complains and instead, turn them into wants.

A I realized that I could be very annoying when I ask for things. Before, I used to complain when I wanted something instead of just asking for it.

B Now with my boyfriend, everything I ask for, I ask for it in a nice way and guess what, most of the time it works.

C It's like Susan Campbell's said, "We complain because it's not as risky as to want".

D I think that the most important thing when you're asking for something is your tone of voice because that is revealing your attitude. If you ask in a rude way of course that person is going to say no, but if you ask for what you want in a

nice way you're playing it safe.Signpost And if asking in a nice way does not work then you just have to be persistent.

Main point # Another skill that has helped me is, I don't let the little things annoy me.

A This is very important to me because I used to hold everything in, and when someone pushed my buttons, boom I explode. That's why I mentioned earlier that this class is also like an anger management class simply because I say what I feel at the moment.

B Now I'm more calm and relaxed and I just don't let little things get to me.

C I'm sure that when Marie was trying to take her test with all those people talking, she just wanted to get up and scream. Instead she came to this class, talked about it and relieved all her anger by letting it all out.

Signpost Since I don't let the little things annoy me anymore, all I needed was to express my thoughts in a nice way.

Main point # Finally, the most important skill that has truly helped the way I communicate with others is expressing negative feelings constructively.

A Before, when someone would blame me or put me down, I immediately let all my frustration out and defend myself by doing the same.

B This only led to arguments. I've learned to use I-messages instead of You- messages. Imagine someone saying "you never call me anymore, you don't care about me". Wouldn't you feel blamed? The right way would be " I feel uncared for when you don't call me".

C Conflicts are almost impossible to avoid, but you can lessen your chance of getting into one by not attacking back.

Conclusion

Summarize I took this class because it was a requirement and I didn't think I would learn much. As this semester comes to an end, I finally see the impact this class has had in my life.

A I had a chance to get close to my boyfriend with the emotional bank account.

B I listened to different problems about people in this class, my wants are now wants and not complains and I'm more honest with my feelings.

C My relationship with my family and friends is at it's best, my self-esteem and confidence couldn't be better, and overall I'm a happier person.

Closing with impact The benefits of this class are priceless! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Briar Rose Assessment Task Year 1

Briar Rose is centered around one womans Holocaust experience and intermixed with the classic fairy-tale, Sleeping Beauty. Yolens uses of classic fairy-tale elements such as a prince and the curse of a long sleep are used to connect us to the horrors of the death camp Chelmno. The result is a story that is fresh and shocking as it tears away any of the numbness one may feel for another account of a Holocaust survivor. Suddenly the fairy-tale ideas of rescue and evil are invested with modern connotations.

Jane Yolen takes an interesting tactic with the story. The odd chapters consist specifically of Gemma, the grandmother, telling her version of Sleeping Beauty to her grandchildren, mostly Becca. The even chapters, however, tell of Beccas search, after her grandmothers death, to find out her grandmothers real identity and origin.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Essay on Briar Rose

It is evident that within the last half of Briar Rose that the alternating chapters merge. This gives rise to a realistation of a symbolic connection between the Halocaust story and Gemmas story of Sleeping Beauty. For example; in Sleeping Beauty, the curse that is bestowed upon the princess, her family and friends mirrors the curse of doom that the Nazis and Gustapo unleashed.. The mist that covers that castle and puts everyone to sleep symbolizes the gassing deaths of millions of people. The castle surrounded with roses that were covered with barbs that were impenetrable symbolized the barbed wire that held the condemned inside the prison camps. By the end of the novel, there is so much symbolism to notice it almost overwhelming. It is as if the symbolism clicks together for the reader at the same time Becca pieces it together for herself.

From the commencement of the novel, the reader receives clues that that the story of Sleeping Beauty is combined with and has an underlying truth of the Holocaust Gemma have been through. "Everyone likes a fairy story because everyone wants things to come right in the end. And even though to tell a story is to tell some kind of untruth, one often suspects that what seems to be untruth is really a hidden truth." This epitomizing the traditional fairy tale moral constructs created to teach children right from wrong; the consequences of obedience and disobedience; and belief that evil can be reckoned with and overcome. Gemma's tale of sleeping beauty is a basic symbolism of her ordeal with the Nazi's, where she emerged as the survivor, symbolised by a princess in Sleeping Beauty. A direct relation between the Holocaust and Sleeping Beauty is demonstrated when Gemma says to Josef "And I shall never forget the dark prince who kissed me awake".

Briar Rose is a exceptionally emotional novel. The language used by Yolen is very graphic, openly depicting the horrifying events that took place in the concentration camps, symbolised by the castle in Sleeping Beauty. The vivid depictions Josef Potocki gave of his struggle makes the reader feel as if they suffered right along with him. When Potocki told Becca and Magda of how he and his companions found Gemma, it came as bitter sweet news due to the horrific events that her grandmother had been through. Described as "In the darkest regions of hell".

Yolen demonstrates an intertwining feature between the fairy-tale; Sleeping Beauty and the Holocaust experience which was undergone by Gemma. He uses the story of Sleeping Beauty to symbolise what actually happened in the concentration camps. He achieves this through the use of; structure, language, themes and characters. The result of which is a novel depicting the atrocities of the Holocaust from a number of diverse perspectives and emotions.
