The Weak WomanWebster's dictionary defines the word weak in many ways. However, the definition used by the storyteller in the story of the Widow of Ephesus is one denoting a deficit in intelligence, judgment, and lacking moral strength or force of character. This is the way he describes the main character in his story and women in general. The idea that women are so feeble in body and in mind is a sexist viewpoint that should be scorned upon by readers today.

Written by Gaius Petronius in the First Century of our common era, "The Widow of Ephesus" was a tale told to the author while traveling. The authenticity of it is unknown but was originally told in humor to calm and entertain a crew of seamen on a ship. The creator of the story is a man named Eumolpus, and he apparently was attempting to gain ground with his argument that women were impetuous in love and could not resist a handsome man, even to the point of forgetting their families to have an affair. And so the story was spawned and repeated for all and any to hear.

Cheap College Papers on The Weak Woman

Interestingly, the captain of the crew is a man called Lichas and aboard with him is his lover, Tryphena, whom had had a brief affair with Eumolpus previously. Whether Eumolpus was trying to make light of his ability to woo Lichas mistress or not is not known. At the end of the tale though, it is noted that Tryphena is blushing, perhaps because of her ability to relate to the circumstances, and Lichas is upset with the story itself and the characters.

In the story, a virtuous woman is widowed and she keeps a vigil over her

Walker,

husband's corpse for days, refusing to leave. A soldier finds her mourning over her husband, scarcely alive, and comforts her and entreats her to get nourishment. She finally gives in and following that, also gives in to his tempting words of love. When, the soldier gets in trouble for neglecting his duties, the widow comes up with a plan to spare him his life at the cost of her dead husbands honor. Their plan works, all are fooled, and the widow and her soldier lover are both spared.

Eumolpus arrogantly uses this illustration to theorize that woman are morally weak and will do anything for love. At the end of his sexist story, Lichas replies that the widow should be hung on the torture stake for what she does with her husband's body. No where does he imply that the soldier should be reprimanded even though he was well aware of her actions and even obviously helped her carry them out. They feel that only the woman is to blame and that her deeds alone are deserving of death.

In today's society, women have worked hard to maintain a reputation deserving of respect. Even so, there are those who still believe that women should stay in second place to men in everything. For those ones, stories like these are held in high regard, even though they are obviously not based on fact or logic. The very idea that women are so feeble in body and in mind is one that should be scorned upon by all readers, regardless of their sex or race. We have come a long way from that time period where women were so degraded. Such literature does nothing more than paint a picture of how backwards civilization used to be.

Until we become a team, we are only a group with common interests. We were selected individuals all with the common interest of business management, put together to become a team that achieve delegated tasks. "Teamwork of this type is the central foundation of any high performance team" (p.101). We are a functional group with the common goal of learning the skills of management, working in teams, and completing tasks. High performance teams have characteristics common to all, regardless of the function. Our group is unique and therefore the suggestions or characteristics need to be applied to our team specifically. According to "Organizational Behavior," there are defined steps that help achieve this transformation. The characteristics are

· Communicate high-performance standards We need to set standards such as time lines and length of individual sections. This needs to be done without becoming too abrupt or overbearing. Everyone needs freedom to be creative and use his or her own skills.

· Set the tone in the first team meeting Everyone within our group needs to have a clear understanding of what is expected and how we will function. Setting the tone influences the organizational culture.

· Create a sense of urgency The urgency has only been created as we approach our deadline. Thus far, it has been the "Due date" that has created the urgency and not prior to. We need to focus on early deadlines to have ample amount of time for review and discussion.

· Establish clear rules for team behavior The University has predefined Rules for the team members and classmates. Suggestions for productivity and organizations are needed more in our group than rules.

· As a leader, model expected behaviors Each one of us needs to take on the leadership role and give direction when indecisiveness occurs. Expected behavior is completion of tasks with a sense of urgency, following rules set out by the team, and proactive approaches to tasks.

· Find ways to create early "successes" We have accomplished a task with a certain amount of success that has given more confidence moving forward.

· Continually introduce new facts and information Through our continuous discussions in the main newsgroup, we are leaning new information daily.

· Give positive feedback and reward high performance Giving feedback from others work has been abundant in our group. Without feedback, performance suffers from lack of input.

Essay Topic; "They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together." Do you agree with Nick's assessment? Discuss with detailed reference to the text.

The comment, "They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together." is made by Nick to Gatsby when he went to warn him following the fatal road accident. This assessment is significant because it shows his change of attitude towards Gatsby whom he had previously considered to be as immoral and decadent as his wealthy friends. Nick's change of heart is brought about by having a chance to really talk over breakfast; the first time Gatsby had told him about his life story.

Gatsby was revealed to Nick as a self-made man who had been born very poor, worked hard as a fisherman to become wealth, then been cheated out of his fortune by his business partner's wife. Poor again, he met Daisy, "The first nice girl he had ever known." and fell in love with her finding "He had committed himself to the following of a grail." The war intervened and Gatsby went away for a few years. On his return, he found Daisy married to Tom, but he thought she married for money and their love would remain unchanged. He worked at building his wealth, and dreamed of winning Daisy's love. Although he became very wealthy Gatsby didn't change his mind and still loved Daisy.

The descriptions in the novel of the members of upper class society make it easy to agree with Nick's assessment of them as "a rotten crowd." This crowd represents the decadence and hedonistic attitudes of rich people in the post-war American society. Tom Buchanan, who has been cheating on his wife, is shown to be selfish and uncaring by this comment about Mr.Wilson, "He's so dumb he doesn't know he's alive."

Buy cheap The Great Gatsby term paper

Daisy is portrayed as cynical and shallow, someone addicted to party-going and able to comment "Sophisticated God, I'm sophisticated." The description of Daisy the day before her wedding given by her bridesmaid, Jordan to Nick suggests that Daisy married not for love, but for money. She had been discovered "as drunk as a monkey" and had told people "Daisy's change' her mine." She had however collected herself and married Tom the next day "without so much as a shiver."

Her friend, Jordan is described by Nick as "incurably dishonest" who had "begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young." She was Daisy's companion in their partying and another member of crowd.

In assessing Gatsby, Nick seems to recognise that he and Gatsby have in common basic morality and spirituality lacking in upper class society. Nick describes himself as "one of the few honest people that I have ever known." Also he recognises Gatsby's "heightened sensitivity" and feels himself allied to him in "…a feeling of defiance, of scornful solidarity… against them all." (the others)

The way people in America behaved at this period makes it easy to agree with Nick's comment of them as "a rotten bunch." This 'lost generation' has lost their value of life and Tom, Daisy and Jordan were part of this group of people. In this sense, Gatsby, who had an innocent and romantic dream, is worth much more than those people who are prostituting themselves for money.

Important Question posed Who and how has someone influenced you to be the person you are today?

Every week for the past three summers I¡¦ve paid a man who insults my short, pudgy figure and makes me run in the blistering heat. I endure this treatment not only because I want to, but also because I know that if I do not, I will let myself down as well as an influential friend. A typical conversation during my private lesson between my tennis coach Ogidi Obi and me sounds like this

¡§Get off your lazy butt, Greg.¡¨

¡§I¡¦m sorry, Ogidi.¡¨

¡§You should be playing every day. Why aren¡¦t you?¡¨

¡§I have a lot of homework these days. My classes are getting tougher.¡¨

¡§What do you do each day for fitness? 50 crunches? 1000 jump ropes? 1-mile run? Not enough. Do twice that a day.¡¨

¡§Ok, I¡¦ll start tomorrow.¡¨

¡§You don¡¦t have the time and energy to do fitness and homework? Tough.¡¨

Usually I wouldn¡¦t take this abuse without a rebuttal but there is something about Ogidi¡¦s tone of voice that pushes me to continue this rigorous routine. Perhaps its because in the back of my mind I know that he is looking out for my immediate and long-term results and that its not out of spite, anger, or as an abuse of his authority over me.

Ogidi has always pushed me to my physical limits to progress my tennis game. Earning his respect required hard work and toil, both of which I put forth because I admire his ability to play tennis. He is a tall, gangly, 8 year old, African-American man who laughs like a gangster from an old black and white film. Throughout our friendship on and off the tennis court we have shared many deep thoughts to one another. Our conversations have spanned from technique on striking the tennis ball to philosophical and religious issues. I have learned to look for the next point and not to dwell on the past. The fact that we contrast so much makes our friendship all the more comical.

Speaking of differences, Ogidi is extremely intimidating, unlike myself. The first time I met him I panicked just approaching the court he was on. I stumbled over my clumsy feet and my hands trembled to the point that my racquet fell out of my sweaty palms. I don¡¦t know whether it is because he is a foot taller than me or because he looks angry most of the time, but he just has an unconscious ability to make a person¡¦s heart beat just a little faster in fear. However, he also has an affable side that has kept me sane through the craziest of times.

During my strenuous junior year, for instance, Ogidi provided me a way to relax, have fun, and release my aggression through tennis. He changed from being just a trusted friend to becoming a sage advisor. His wisdom guided me through my hectic year and boosted my confidence into the tennis season. I would end up avenging losses against people I thought I never could beat at tennis and he helped me relax by exposing me to daily meditation exercises. Without a doubt Ogidi Obi has influenced me in a larger way than I had ever imagined he has given me a better eye for the tennis court and a better vision for life.

September 11, 001, changed the way I look at life.

I awoke to the disruptive blare of the alarm clock that signaled the start of another monotonous morning schedule. Under the dim glow of shining stars and with traffic lights as my guide, I headed down to the church for a droning class of scripture study. Life was good; I felt invincible.

My mother drove into the parking lot to pick me up as usual in her white Explorer--she appeared neither rushed nor alarmed. Her demeanor revealed nothing to indicate the devastation of the news she delivered. Her exclamation, "It's the start of World War III," rocked my body. I could not register her words as she explained what had happened. I tried to picture the two buildings, symbols of capitalism, colliding planes, and fireballs,a vision of Armageddon. I thought about Hollywood's version--"Independence Day"--but this was the real thing, no creation from tinsel town. I tried to absorb the prattle of radio reports and at the same time grasp my mom's babble as we drove home.

This day would be devoted to understanding what had happened to make my mom think that a world war would be started based on what had occurred earlier in the morning. Was it really the beginning of the end?

I immediately turned on the television; it would remain on for the rest of the day. The image of two towers, like two giant tombstones, one burning from the impact, one intact, assaulted my vision, creating a permanent imprint. Minutes later a plane struck the second tower, creating a massive scar in its side. It occurred to me that what happened might have been a coordinated effort. Was someone from another country behind this, or were there citizens of the United States willing to kill thousands of people to prove a point?

Information from the radio both enlightened and confused me as I negotiated the familiar turns on my way to Bullard. News that the first tower had fallen, sending out a cloud of dust like a volcano, greeted me as I arrived at my first period class. How many people just died? When had we ever been attacked on our homeland? History had taught me about the infamy of December 7, 141. Was Pearl Harbor to World War II as the towers were to World War III? I had many more questions than answers.

Students huddled in groups to hear the news for the first time or to grasp "old" information. The expressions on their faces, like masks from a Greek tragedy, matched the way I felt. Televisions provided images and background noise to all irrelevant activities. The teacher attempted to divert our attention by starting a lesson plan. There was no hope. Eyes were glued to the "box." Eventually the teacher stopped trying to teach and was likewise snared by the television's web of shock and terror. Any bit of news proved all-absorbing.

Information from the media would continue to bombard and muddle my mind for days and weeks to come. What might come next was impossible to predict. Safety and security vanished with the onslaught of each new revelation of horror. My thoughts had a new edge. September 11 had sharpened my senses, heightened my defense and increased my apprehension. The future lay before me like a bad dream and I knew that life as I knew it had evaporated.

Future. When one hears that word, one thinks of towering skyscrapers piercing the clouds, swift hovercrafts emitting beeping noises, and servile robots on wheels. But a thought that is not popular amongst human minds is what the future holds in store for animals, much less jackass penguins. The purpose of this paper is to inform you of the possible adaptations that the jackass penguin could evolve in the future. As you will see, the environment is a major component in evolution. Let us take a journey into the year 07 . . .

The jackass penguin used to live off the coast of South Africa. It did not live on the mainland because of the dangers of predators. Because of global warming, the polar ice caps melted (as we all know) and caused many of the islands to be covered by the rising ocean levels. This left only the larger islands protruding from the ascending waters, causing the penguins to spend more time underwater. The jackass penguin, in turn, has adapted to its aquatic lifestyle by evolving certain body parts.

One thing that the jackass penguin has had to adapt to is the increase in temperature as a result of global warming. A larger head is used to give off body heat. The lighter color of the fur absorbs less heat while the reduced number of fat layers help to keep in less warmth.

The jackass penguin has also had to adapt to a more aquatic life. A larger beak is used to catch more fish as it is harder to catch them than ever before (they, too, have evolved to better survive against predators). Stiffer wings and larger webbed feet help the penguin swim faster, while a stronger tail aids in steering. Furthermore, a streamlined body gives the penguin more freedom in the water.

Write my Essay on The Effects of the Environment on the Jackass Penguin

You may be wondering how the jackass penguin evolved from a chubby, dark creature into a one adapted to its environment. The answer lies in Darwin's theory of natural selection, where organisms that are more fit are more likely to survive and produce offspring. As the jackass penguin's surrounding's changed, penguins that retained heat or were not suited for swimming were unfit and died out, whereas the small number of penguins with lighter fur and better swimming capabilities survived and reproduced. This "natural selection" has caused the population of ideally suited penguins to rise and the number of unfit penguins to decline.

And so we see how the jackass penguin has evolved to better survive in harsh environments. Join us next time, where we will be discussing the jackass kookaburra...

Organisms evolve when environment changes. The jackass penguin, for example, could evolve a larger head, lighter color, and less layers of fat to regulate heat, and a larger beak, stiffer wings, a stronger tail, larger webbed feet, and a streamlined body for swimming. Thus, we see that the environment is the most important factor in the evolution of an organism.

The Great Society

The economy leading up to the year of 164 was doing very well. Unemployment was below four percent Gross National Product was growing at approximately six percent. Inflation was less then three percent. The setting was ripe for the president to create "A War on Poverty."

In the beginning of LBJ's tenure as president he continued Kennedy's work in developing programs to help society in many aspects. The programs that he devised were called the Great Society. Lyndon proposed "A War on Poverty" with the Economic Opportunity Act. The programs under the act consisted primarily of the Job Corps; community action programs; volunteers against poverty; financial aid to low income families; and Medicare. Sub programs included racial injustice and education.

The Job Corps were created to help younger students to advance in careers who were unable to go to college for one reason or another. It developed the skills that they had and prepared them for a better quality of life through work study and work training programs. The program is still in existence in 00 and helps over 70,000 students a year.

Write my Essay on The Great Society for me

All over the country Community Actions Programs would be used to attack poverty at the home level. Each community would have its own program tailored for that community. The residents for the community would develop the plan to attack poverty and stomp it out. This was a good plan as it would be created by the people who it was affecting the most. The government would not have to come in and create a fix for multiple places. A plan would be provided to the government by the people who were affected. That way the problem would be specialized to the area and not just generalized to cover the whole country. After approval plans were mostly funded by the government to get them started.

Where would all these people come from for the Job Corps and the Community Action Programs? Volunteers against poverty would be requested by the government to help in the undertaking of poverty in America. These people were trained and used where necessary to help end poverty.

Financial aid was provided to lower income families. People who needed to be re-trained in another field could support families with the aid besides learning a new trade. This would enable them to earn more money to support families without the aid of the government.

To watch over and implement The Economic Act, LBJ created a new position to report directly to him on the progress of the programs. Sargent Shriver was appointed to this Office of Economic Opportunity. He would work with the new programs and existing agencies on the War on Poverty.

The last issue of major concern addressed in this paper is the non-existence of medical aid to the elderly. In the sixties there was concern over the amount of people in the country who were unable to attain good health care once they were retired. Insurance was expensive and going up. Older people that were ill depended on children to help out in the event of a devastating illness. Medicare was implemented to insure that the elderly would receive good heath care at lower expense to themselves.
